Shake 4.1 flipbook running SLOOOOWWWWW on MacPro

Anyone else have this issue. I have a 3 gig MacPro running Shake 4.1 and when I make a flip book I get about 200 frames into it and it hangs for about 30 seconds. My Quad G5 is way faster, it doesn't hang!. My graphics card is a little better in the G5 and I have 6 gigs of RAM as compared to 5 gigs in my Mac Pro, but what gives, that doesn't seem to be enough to justify a 30 second hang up.
Any thoughts folks?

Not like I have access to a MacPro, but have you tried Shift+> to use the cache-based playback?

  • Can Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 run on 2009 MacPro?

I have a 2009 MacPro running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), and its startup disk that needs repair, according to Disk Utility diagnostics.  It suggests to restart the computer from another disk to repair the HD.  I cannot locate the DVD disks that came with it, and tried to use Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) installation DVD to start the computer from it, and then run Disk Utility to repair the damaged disk.  However, every time I restart the computer from the DVD it, black curtain drops down and the error message says "restart your computer".  Does this mean that MacPro is incompatible with OS X 10.5, or something is wrong with the DVD that I have?  Any suggestions about how to repair the startup disk if I don't have the Snow Leopard DVD to start it from ?

You can call AppleCare and they will send you replacement DVD for your Mac. They will ask for your serial number to ensure that you get the correct set. They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • Will DVD SP 2 run on a MacPro?

    Hi folks,
I found an earlier similar thread on this question, but regarding DVD SP 3, so I'm betting the answer is the same, but I just have to make sure:
Will our old DVD SP 2 stand alone app. run on our brand new Intel MacPro? If not, is that because of the whole universal binary issue? Has anyone tried to run the old version on the new machine?
(And as an aside, was anyone else bummed out that the newer DVD SP versions didn't include the A.Pack for AC3 audio encoding?)
    Thanks for any feedback.

A.Pack had it's place and in fact I still love using it! I really like the ability to preview the AC3 file once encoded and not have to drop the file into DVDSP, play it there and decide to go back. If Compressor could please have this added as a feature, I'll keep quiet!
Yes, A.Pack was a bit fiddly, and boy did it cause issues on DP macs (anyone else remember that thread or know where Chris Vargas is these days?), but it was far from being a nuisance app on my hard drive.
On the other hand, it does make sense to keep the encoding in one place... and not having to drag and drop the same file multiple times to set up the left and right channels is a bonus

  • Run Mid 2012 MacPro Without Display Card

    Hi,
I have a new 12-Core 3.06 MacPro and I need to utilize both 8x PCI slots (1 & 2) as well as one or both of the 4x PCI slots (3 &4).
Does anyone know if a New Mid 2012 MacPro can run without a Display Card and more importantly with a USB to VGA DisplayLink Adapter?
I was looking at this one in particular: http://www.startech.com/AV/USB-Video-Adapters/Professional-USB-VGA-External-Dual -or-Multi-Monitor-Video-Adapter~USB2VGAPRO
I don't care about video performance, as it will be connected to a KVM in a rack.
The MacPro will be running Mountain Lion Server.
    Thanks in advance.

Just an update for those who may come across this post - that you can run the Mac Pro 2012 with a USB adapter. I used a Startech USB to VGA adapter.
The caveats to consider. The adapters require a driver installation. This means the monitor will not display anything until the OS has started loading the drivers. What this means is, if your drive is failing and you cannot get it to boot properly, you won't be able to see anything going on since the driver hasn't loaded yet. Also, if you decide to boot into another OS partition, it better have the driver loaded as well. I'm also not sure single user mode will work - but have not tested that yet.
I've found myself some late model Nvidia single-height vid cards that still work great in the newest Mac Pros and are using them when I need both 16x PCIe slots and have slot 3 or 4 available. Really wish there were still options to purchase single-height vid cards with the newest Mac Pros.

  • Anybody running ATI Radeon 5770HD with an Original MacPro?

Id be interest to how much success users are having running an Original MacPro 2006 (1,1) with the 5770HD graphics card... Im using one with mine, but occasionally get Kernel Crashes... however Im running FCPX & Motion 5 plus DVDSP4, Cinema Tools (and FCS3 made me install Qmaster even though I have it built in, in Compressor 4). Nothing else on my machine.

Panics can be due to a number of issues. Drivers, hardware, heat even. Crashes are entirely different from a kernel panic.
I'd be concerned with system maintenance and repair, and how well you cloned your system. Any crash or freeze can cause directory corruption requiring action and not just a Safe boot or restart to resolve.

  • Can Shake 4.1 run on iMac 1.83Ghz?

I was wondering if Shake 4.1 can run on the new iMac Intel Duo 1.83GHz. Apple says it requires 1280x1024 resolution, but the 1.83GHz iMac can only support 1440x900. Will I need an external monitor (mini-DVI port) with 1280x1024 resolution in order to use Shake 4.1 and are 24-inch screens supported on the new iMacs (Acer AL2416WD)? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
iMac Intel Duo 1.83GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    Powermac G5 Dual 1.8ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

The Shake tech specs say "Display with 1280-by-1024-pixel or 1440-by-990-pixel resolution and 24-bit color". So yes, it will run. If it were me, though, I'd want a second monitor to have room to work effectively; keeping all the pallettes on one monitor while using the second monitor for your work space can often be very useful.
    Regards.

  • Blackmagic compatibility with Shake 4.1

Good evening ladies and gentelmen. I will be using a Blackmagic Multibridge Pro and Shake 4.1. Do any of you have similar setup? Are the issues regarding video output been resolved? Thank you for your kind responses.

This is from Blackmagic's support page
    5 February 2007 — Number 176
    Shake compatibility
Shake versions 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 have previously been tested and verified for use with DeckLink and Multibridge products. Shake 4.0 is the most recent version to have been tested and verified with the latest versions of Mac OS X, QuickTime and Blackmagic drivers. Shake 4.0 is a PowerPC application suitable for use with PowerMac G5's.
Shake 4.1 is the first version of Shake designed to be run on Intel-based Macs. Unfortunately Shake 4.1 will crash when the Disk Flipbook is used to render with the videoOutput option enabled and set to a Blackmagic device. This bug also affects cards from other vendors. Apple are aware of this bug but it may take some time to resolve. This means that one should not currently attempt to use DeckLink and Multibridge hardware to monitor the video output of Shake 4.1. Shake 4.1 can be used on a G5 or Mac Pro which has Blackmagic hardware installed as long as the videoOutput option has not been enabled.
DeckLink and Multibridge users who need to monitor video output from Shake should continue to use the previous Shake 4.0 on a PowerMac G5 until this bug has been resolved.

  • Can not see a sbRIO in MAX running on a virtual machine

I am trying to connect a sbRIO-9606 to a Windows 7 virtual machine (VMWare) running on a MacPro.  I can open a CMD prompt and ping the sbRIO but when I run MAX, it does not appear in Remote Systems.
The virtual NIC is bridged to the pyhsical one (on the MAC)
Does anyone have experience doing this, or know why I cannot see the sbRIO?

    Hi jaketc,
I've had similar issues at times depending on how my host and guest operating sytems network interfaces are configured.  It sounds like your settings are correct (bridged), but it is difficult to guarantee.  The first step I usually take is disable any network interfaces (on the host and guest OS) that are not critical to connecting to the remote target.
A more generic answer is to walk through the troubleshooting steps in this document, but it won't cover the virtualized OS considerations of your setup:
Why Does My CompactRIO Controller or Single-Board RIO Not Show Up in Measurement & Automation Explor...
Because you can ping the target, it sounds like the Single-Board RIO already has an IP address, you know what it is, and ethernet communication can be established.  When I've been in that situation in the past, I've been able to manually add the RIO target to MAX.  To find a system that is already configured with an IP address, simply right-click on Remote Systems and select Create New. Enter the appropriate configuration information in the dialog box, and MAX will manually place that system in the Remote Systems listing and all tasks will function properly.

  • I dl'd Firefox 4, was working great but, Firefox 4 is unable to work w/ Netflix. I hit the Netflix restart in 32-bit mode and now Firefox 4 will not open on my MacPro. I have to "Force Quit". What's the problem?

I dl'd Firefox 4 on wide release Tuesday. It was working just fine on all news sites I use. Then, I tried to use my Netflix streaming. Netflix alerted me FF4 needed to run in 32-bit mode due to its movie player plug-in. I hit the Netflix restart in 32-bit button, FF4 crashed. I've since re-dl'd FF4 and loaded it into the Apps folder on my MacPro(Mac OS 1.6.7/2.66 Quad-core/2 GB RAM/256MB GPU). It still won't open and I have to "Force Quit". Several "Reports" have been sent to Apple but, I don't think Apple is the problem. As it now stands, I can only run last version of FF on my MacPro.
I also have a MacBook(Mac OS 10.6.7/2.16 C2D/1 GB RAM/64 MB GPU) and I am able to have 2 versions of FF on that Mac. I even have the newest version labeled as Firefox4, so as to distinguish between the 2 for the purpose of using FF4 for everything but Netflix. So, what happened? What's the difference? Why won't FF4 run on my MacPro anymore?

If this were just a Netflix problem, why can I access Netflix through Internet Explorer and not through Firefox? I've been using Firefox to access Netflix for at least the past year and starting yesterday (12/6/11) Firefox doesn't seem to recognize that Netflix exists. I've tried the suggested Firefox "help" which was of no help whatsoever and may even have made life more difficult in accessing other accounts. Anyone know how to contact Netflix or Firefox by phone?

  • Will Nikon Scan 4 run on Mac Pro?

The new Mac Pro will be delivered tomorrow. While gathering as much information as possible about the compatibility of my current programs, I came upon a note on the Nikon website, stating that Nikon Scan 4 is not compatible with Intel Macs.
I imagine it would be running through Rosetta. Am I correct? Or will I have to keep the old G4 as a dedicated scanning computer?

It finally works! Instead of installing it again from
the disk I downloaded Nikon Scan 4 and the 4.02
update from Nikon's site, and that one works,
although it has the same name without anything
indicating it might be a modified version. Has me
    wondering, but hey, it works!
I was wondering how well it works and if the post scan processing of slides using using the Mac Pro is faster than your G4 machine. I scan about 45,000 slides a year and am looking to upgrade my DP G4 1.42 machines.
I was talking to NikonUSA yesterday and there is no information on if and when Scan 4 will be updated, for now it appears that it runs under Rosseta. Their Official position is that it may or not run on a MacPro.
    Thank you for any feedback.
As for VueScan. The dynamic range at 4000DPI 16bit scans is much better with Nikon's software. Not just my opinion but is shared by those who pay me to do their work.

  • Does Shake reveal its serial number anywhere?

I have the Shake install disc, software license and manuals but apparently have lost the serial number. There are no stickers on any of the doc's. I have it installed on a PPC 2.7Ghz Dual Processor with two hard drives, OS 10.4.11 on one drive and 10.5.8 on the other. I want to install Shake on the drive with 10.5.8 but have no serial number and when using Shake on 10.4.11 it doesn't show the serial number anywhere that I can find. If anyone knows how I can retrieve the serial number from Shake while it is running I'd really appreciate it.
    --Matt

    Hello,
Muse CC does not need serial number for installation. You might be getting that prompt due to some network element blocking communication with Adobe servers.
    Please try the following:-
1)If you are on a MAC:-
Press Shift + Command + G(Else Finder, Go-->Go to folder) to open Go to folder.
Type /etc and open the file called hosts.
Check if you have any Adobe related entry in the file.
If yes, please rename the file and check again.
2)If you are on windows machine:-
    Go to the location:- C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
    Open 'hosts' file.
Check if you have any Adobe related entry in the file.
If yes, please rename the file and check again.
    Regards,

  • Linux on MacPro ?

Any brave soul would like to install a decent distro (Debian or Gentoo) on MacPro?
It should be possible: SGI Altix XE has pretty much the same hardware (same cpus and chipset) and runs Linux...
Maybe a good starting point could be using rEFIt (http://refit.sourceforge.net/) to boot Linux from a second drive...
    Cheers,

      Other OS

I need a (cheap) unix multi-core server, without graphical interface, to be used as a test box for scientific parallel codes, written in C and Fortran.
So I need a real, modular and fine-tunable, unix system... not a crappy OSXParallelsLinux .... (I'm also interested in Darwin, if it runs on new MacPro)
Also, the box will be probably hosted somewhere in a datacenter, so I'm waiting for the new XServe (if it can run Linux)

  • 2 ACD 30" running on NVidia FX 4500--why is one brighter than the other?

Last November 2006 I bought a new MacPro, 2/3Ghz Xeon, 4/500GB SATA drives, 4/1GB 667 MHz DDR2 DIMMs, and NVidia Quadro FX 4500 video card to run a 30" ACD. July 2007 (last week) I added a second 30" ACD which is noticeably brighter than the first ACD. This holds true whether running OS X 10.4.10 or Windows XP Pro w/ BootCamp 1.1.2.
After 2 hrs on phone, AppleCare advises an appointment with AppleStore "Geniuses" since it's 8 mos old and still under warranty. Today, local Geniuses respond: "it's just newer technology, nothing wrong with either one"; "you didn't buy it from us (MacConnection)"; "dim down the bright one to make it match"; store manager offers to send older one back for unspecified repair but adds "it probably won't make any difference, and since you didn't return it within 14 days of purchase (last November) we can't exchange it for a new one. Besides, you didn't know there was a problem until you bought the new one, right?" The geniuses are uninterested in making a side-by-side comparison with a newer ACD and stand silent waiting for me to give up.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with two ACD 30s running on a MacPro? Or this trademark indifference with respect to service?
MacPro 3Ghz, 4x500 SATA   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Windows XP Pro running GIS Apps (ArcInfo Suite & Erdas Imagine)

    Hi and welcome to discussions.
I think there is some natural minor variation between LCDs bought at the same time anyway. They also do tend to become slightly dimmer with age. However, Apple did update the specs on the 30" ACD during 2006, including the brightness. According to the following article it went from 270 to 400 cd/m2, a significant jump:
    http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/3/28/3369
When you bought in November 2006 I guess it's possible you got some older stock, especially if you bought from a third party retailer. I suspect there's nothing actually wrong with the displays themselves and hence they can't be 'fixed', other than to make some manual adjustments to the brightness etc.

  • Will Compressor 4 run as a stand alone without FCPX?

Will Compressor 4 run as a stand alone without FCPX?
I use FCP 7.0.3 and have COmpressor 3. I wondered if Compressor 4 would run on my MacPro and would I see any improvement over Compressor 3?
4 isn't tied down to FCPX I hope.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks!
    Steve

Unless you need some special encoding that compressor 3.5 can't do, I would not "upgrade" to version 4.  I bought the new version after FCP X hosed my version of 3.5 thinking it would solve my problem.  It only created more problems for me. (BTW, I was subsequently able to resurrect the 3.5 version with compressor repair and doing a bunch of other stuff!)  The new version has Apple Qmaster incorporated into it which on the surface looks like an advantage.  But I have not been able to get it to form a quick cluster despite numerous attempts.  I have "spoken" to Russ on the forum here and he can't figure it out.  I have spoken several times to a seemingly knowlegable Apple care  specialist- they can reproduce my problem but they can't fix it  either.  Consequently, encoding is much slower in Compressor  4 vs 3.  If compressor 3 is doing what you need it to do, stick with it.  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!!!

  • Having SOOOO much fun with Shake!

If you all haven't bought Shake yet... run do not walk to the Apple Store and buy it... it's SUCH a great program. The Pro Training book is also fun to learn with, and the humor in it is refreshing indeed...
Such power for a song of a price... it's incredible.
Started playing with it a while ago, and learning all the things you can do with it is a bunch of fun.
The slow mo, rotoscoping, keying etc, is so much better than what you can do with FCP, and at this price, it's no more than a set of plugins.
    Jerry

Yes...this is a great application. Complex as ****...and it does tend to slow down the storytelling process. But, it you leave all the Shake work until you have the story told...then yaay.
Man, as an editor nowadays you need to know more than just the editing and storytelling tool. Now we need to know FCP, and motion graphics with Motion and how to comp footage with AE and Shake...
But, I'll admit...Shake is fun. IT wasn't until a recent LAFCPUG meeting that I got the Node structure...small rivers that lead to the main river or ocean...all flowing downhill.
