Shake 4.1 + Qmaster over XSAN, broken!

We're attempting to send a Shake script through Qmaster to distribute the rendering. The job is submitted okay and rendering commences, but immediately gets an error; this is what reads in the "Status" window of the Batch Monitor log:
"Status: Successful: Encountered error -43 on attempt to create QuickTime file /Volumes/Compressor_Disk/Clips/Shake media/finished-composites/bdvtest_monday3. ; /var/tmp/tmp.bCVMaP: line 11: /Volumes/Compressor_Disk/Clips/Shake: No such file or directory"
Any ideas?

Apple's Shake page states that it is compatible with Final Cut 5 - this is clearly not the case since Compressor 2.0.1 is not compatible with Qmaster 2.1 which I unknowingly installed with Shake. I discovered this as I was outputting a project for a client this morning.
After talking with tech support, I was advised that the only way to resolve this issue is to upgrade to FCP 5.1 for $60 (which takes 1 week to receive the upgrade disks) or delete my hard drive and reinstall FCP Studio.
Neither option was acceptable to me because my client is flying out of the country tomorrow and I needed to get him the dvd before he left. I ended up outputting a much lower quality VCD with a promise to send a DVD later.
Why should Apple force me to pay for an upgrade to resolve a compatibility problem that their software created? - this should issue should be fixed free of charge.

JPEG import into After Effects 6.5/7 over Xsan

We are unable to import any type of .jpg file into After Effects over the Xsan file system. When attempting to do so we only receive a slew of bogus error messages and the files will not import, tiff files or other formats are fine. This issue plagued us back in Panther and we scratched the Xsan file system and went to plain apple share to get around this.
We went back to Xsan with Tiger because we were told the issue had been resolved, it hasn't been fixed, and now we're back to square one.
Being an effects department, all of our photo librarties are jpeg so we have to convert everything to tiff to get it to import into AE. Apple told us to contact Adobe and Adobe tells us to contact Apple. Has anyone else experinced this joy?
P.S. Has anyone had trouble importing .tga files into Photoshop CS2 over Xsan, we are also having this issue?

I brought in an Xsan expert to set this system up and I do not know what block size he set, I will check with him. We are running Xsan 1.4 w/10.4.7 on all of the clients and servers and we still have this issue.
I am hoping the block size is the default but if it isn't at least that would be a good explanation. It took five days the last time to do this and I am not ready to do it all over again, especially when it cost so much to bring someone out to do it and they said that the issue has been resolved since previous versions of Xsan.

Qmaster and XSAN?

I'm trying to set up Final Cut Server on our fibre server and in the setup and installation menu it mentions creating quickclusters and custom clusters. Are these settings meant only for the server computer or all computers connected to the network? What are some best practices with this? If I am sending bits to other computers directly I'm definitely going over giga-ethernet, but if I'm going fibre, wouldn't I have to copy once to the server computer, then again to the cluster computers?

You are correct. I only do the Gig-E configuration when customer don't care about how long the comnpression takes.
But normally all my deployment are done over Xsan.
So the tips for Xsan are as follows:
On the cluster controller, point the cluster storage to a folder on the Xsan volume, make sure that all the other nodes users and group account in the cluster have full read/write access to this location. On the other nodes configure there cluster storage to that directory as well. This way no copying of source media is ever made to the cluster node.
Does this make sense?

AFP over SSH broken in 10.4.8?

I'm trying to set up AFP sharing over an SSH tunnel with the classic command (192.168.10.10 is my "server", a Mac Mini running 10.4.8):
ssh -L 29000:192.168.10.10:548 [email protected] -p 22
Then I try to connect the share from my MacBook:
afp://Steven@localhost:29000
Unfortunately this doesn't work...I'm getting a "Locating localhost:29000" dialog box and then a timeout. The weird part is that it works perfectly if I tunnel to port 80 instead of 548 for example...I can go to localhost:29000 in safari and see the apache server on my Mac Mini.
Any clue on what's going on?

Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Music Lab's "Midi Over LAN" broken?

Hi all,
I run "music lab's midi over lan" and am wondering if it doesn't work under the new OSX 10.4.9......
I was forced to update 1 of my slave G5s and now "MolCP" no longer worx...... I can't be certain that it is 10.4.9, but I'm trouble-shooting,

Er, that's not forced, that's just not knowing any better!
You should have just gone to Apple and downloaded the 10.4.8 combo installer.

OSX updates are always recommended to be done from the full combo update, rather than the smaller cut-down software updates anyway.

Messages over Bonjour broken

My wife and I use Messages to send links, images, etc. to each other. Or, rather, we used to. Since updating to Yosemite, whenever one of us sends a message to the other, we get a notification, but no message appears in the application. Instead, when I start up Messages, I see this:

Also, when trying to create a new message in Messages, I can type the name of a recipient on the "to:" line, but, having done so, it doesn't allow me to type anything on the message line.

If you read my posts you will often see I have misspelt something or used a word out of context.
Firefox picks up most but not when I spell from as form as both are English words.
So both computers are getting their visible IP from the Airport.
(say 192.168.1.200 and 192.168.1.199).
If there are two DHCP servers then one of the Issued IPs is Hidden

This may mean that for just "seeing" the other Mac it works but when it comes down to File and IM sending it "Sees" two networks.
Are these two Macs Audio able ?

Shake Qmaster Help...

First off I am running into a lot of weird problems with sending Shake scripts to my render nodes with qmaster. They are not managed, they are just quickclusters.
I am running Shake 4.1, Qmaster is ver2, my rendernodes are intelMini's. I am rendering 4 shots that about 2000 frames each, all 2k full frame 35mm scans.
When I send to Qmaster, it of course breaks up the batches into groups, but I I'll get these weird errors, like...
Failed: 3x HOST [miniRender1.local] Unix command error: 1, error: /Volumes/HD/scripts/blah_blah.tga: No such file or directory
This doesn't make any sence, cause that is the dir for my scripts, and has nothing to do with the files I am rendering, I am rendering them to a different directory, and they are cineons, .cin, I have no idea where the .tga is coming from? But it does it all the time... Pretty much every frame.
So it will freaze on this error, then I will stop and resume the render, but then it starts over... and writes over already rendered frames.
Anyone know what the working setup right now is with Shake and Qmaster? Wasn't there some sort of incompatability with Shake and a Qmaster update? Is that what I'm running into?

Qmaster NOOB - Shake question...

OK, so I've search through the forums, but I havn't found the answer I'm looking for.
I'm trying to set up Shake to use Qmaster. Now, I've read all the B.S. in setting it up, and getting it to work, I'm prepared for that... rather, I'm prepared to swear a lot and stay up a long time trying to get it to work.
And I've also read that I have to have Shake installed on all the machines that are in the Qmaster Render Node... BUT, ( and finally now, the question).....
Do I have to indiviual licenesed copies of Shake on the render nodes, or can I use my one copy?

You just have to install it, dont worry about the licensing. Render only in Shake is free on the Mac, you just cant open the UI.
Same with Maya. After Effects requires a license, but you can use the same one on each node. Not sure if its intended that way.

New To Shake - Is Qmaster Necessary?

I just ordered Shake, can't wait to get set up. I've been reading here a bit about Qmaster, and that it screws up Compressor (which of course I need). I am running Final Cut Studio (latest version) on my iMac Intel machine, if that helps.
So, do I need Qmaster for Shake? If so, should I download the version via the separate link on Apple's Shake page? Should I not install the version that comes with Shake 4.1?
I don't plan on doing any network rendering with Shake (not yet anyway), and I'd really like to avoid having to re-install FCS if at all possible.
Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

AFAIK, there is no problem running Shake w/o QMaster unless you want to run a renderfarm. That said, the only issue with Shake's QMaster and DVDSP's arose if you were running the universal binary version of Shake and the non-universal binary of DVDSP.
Since you say you're up to date, you should experience no conflict...

Xsan and Qmaster - How?

After reading the thread Qmaster killed my Xsan, I got a little worried about trying Qmaster with Xsan.
At work, we have an Xsan setup with 12 clients, all recently upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
I have read through what the Distributed Processing Setup manual says about Xsan, but that was not much.
Can somebody please give some advice on how to set it up properly?
This is what I have done so far.
1. One client is set up as "Services and controller"
2. All the other clients are set up as "Services only"
3. All clients are set up with the Compressor service as shared and managed
(I have not yet made the cluster with Qadministrator)
What should I set the cluster storage to, in System Preferences -> Apple Qmaster? Do I need to set the cluster storage for every client, or only the controller?
What should I set the network interface to, inside System Preferences -> Apple Qmaster?
I would really appreciate some advice from somebody who has got Qmaster working well with Xsan, or knows very well how to set it up.
(I posted this in the Xsan forum, as I figured it would be more likely to find people with experience using Qmaster with Xsan here.)

First of all, this thread is almost two years old. Much has changed since then.
Specifically, FCS 2 has come out with many updates for Compressor 3 and Q master.
I can tell you that we have Q master running on our X-SAN and so far (knock on wood) it has NOT killed it! In fact, we're harnessing 30+ G-5's for rendering to DVD Studio Pro and it's screaming fast.
As far as specific advice, we had no special help other than reading the manual. It's a bit tricky setting things up, as there's a difference between "managed" and "quick cluster". I would suggest starting small with just a couple of systems and establish the connectivity and settings. Once you get it working on at least two systems, the rest is just adding more CPU's to the cluster. Good luck.

QMaster not working

ok I have Final Cut Studio 5 and my friend has Shake 4 and I've tried installing Qmaster from BOTH of them after removing it completely and all I'm getting is it saying its starting its stoping its starting and repeating is there anything I can do to fix it? I just tried to run Qmaster, Qadmin, and Compressor and it doesnt work....do I have to wipe the HD or is there another way around it because I use this computer for my school work and I'd rather not have to reformat

You've got to tell us EXACTLY what you've tried. That said, I don't think reinstalling will be necessary.
In my opinion, things work most reliably NOT using "Quickcluster," instead use the QM System Preferences Pane to set up 1 computer as the "Services Controller" and the other as "Services Only."
Make sure that in the Preferences Pane each checkbox under MANAGED is checked. Also, you have to turn off the FIREWALL option in each computer's SHARING Preferences.
Then, on the Controller computer, launch Apple QAdmin and set up a new Cluster. + sign, name it, choose the Controller Computer's Name as the Cluster Controller, CLICK APPLY. Then in the bottom of the screen each computer you designated as a MANAGED Service will appear. You should be able to drag and drop each one into the Cluster. Click APPLY when done. Quit the program.
Now you should be able to submit jobs using the QMaster program.
You need to print out the User Guides for QMaster AND "Getting Started with Compressor and QMaster" over and over again. Leave a copy in the bathroom, and another on your bedside. You need to read them repeatedly because new things keep sinking in and they are written rather opaquely.
On screen reading will never work. You need paper to master this stuff.

Motion 3 & Shake - Which To Choose?

OK, not trying to start a war.. I just have some basic questions regarding these two apps. Looking for some opinions on this.
I am fairly new to Shake, so with the announcement of FCS2 I am considering moving away from Shake in favor of Motion 3. I really like Shake and I understand the workflow, but now there is much overlap between the two applications (at least for my needs). Re-timing, GPU acceleration, motion tracking, etc. From what I understand, some features from Shake made their way over to M3.
As a serious hobbyist (filmmaker), am I making a mistake by not keeping Shake in my toolbox? I'm honestly having trouble thinking of things I'm doing in Shake that Motion 3 could not handle (again, for at least for my immediate needs).

Since there is, and won't be any more upgrades to Shake, there's no reason abandon it. The more ways you can skin a cat, the better. Keep it in your toolbox. It doesn't even take up much hard drive space.
Also, I think Motion 3 will remain primarily a motion graphics application. It's great that it's borrowing some tech from Shake, but I think that's a desire to compete with After Effects. I doubt Apple is building Motion to be a Shake killer. I have the feeling we're going to see a successor to Shake somewhere down the road.
I'm not a Shake user myself (yet), but I have an pretty good idea how **** powerful it can be. You mentioned you were new to the program, so it could just be that you haven't quite unearthed its potential, or haven't had need to yet. But if you're making films, it would probably be remiss to disregard Shake in light of Motion 3.

Reporting Direct Production Cost Center Over/Under Absorption

Hi,
I am trying to find a way to report Manufacturing Cost Center Over/Under Absorption in a similar way COGS are reported in CO-PA. I mean - I would like to breakdown Direct Manufacturing Cost Center Over/Under Absorption into cost elements (just like COGS are broken down in COPA when invoice is posted).
I wonder if this is possible in SAP without Material Ledger implemented. If yes - can it be achieved by using a standard functionality or does it require an additional development?

My intention was to show Cost center over/underabsorption broken down by cost componets (activity Labour, Machine, Overhead). Currently it is shown as a balance on cost center. I would like to be able to recognize which part of Direct manufacturing CC balance refers to Labour, which to Machine and which to Overhead. Is it possible to achieve in sandard report or additional settings/development is required.

Trying to output Quicktime movies from shake scripts only geting iffs

I am trying to batch render shake scripts using Qmaster. My quickcluster is working fine except I am getting individual iffs instead of a single Quicktime movie. My fileout node is set to Quicktime output. What I am missing?

For example: New Teaser (Shake) New Teaser Siren 1_2.mov
When I submit a batch, Qmaster creates individual iffs and also three scripts each with the proper filename, but no Quicktime movie

Qmaster & terminal: failed to convert ... to XML

I want to render multiple Shake scripts with Qmaster executing from Terminal (command line).
My command for a script is:
