Shake, After Effects, Motion?

Is Shake equivalent to After Effects? Also, where does Motion fall into the scheme of things. Im trying to understand what the differences is between all 3 of these programs. I have no experience with any of them. Can someone explain and suggest what they think is the best program to learn?

Well,
There are many things that all 3 apps can do that are either equal or similar.
You can key, composite and generate, to a degree, in all. Each do things better than the others.
AE and Motion are layer based apps (like Photoshop).
Shake is node based.
AE and Motion do particles and text effects really well out of the box.
Over on mograph.net the same question was just asked. Below are some of the responses:
Shake is really great at:
Using one object to matte many things at once- no pre-composing, no unneccesary multiple matte layers.
Compositing files that contain z-depth information in z-space.
Complex keying and color correction.
Floating color calculations (for example, multiple instances of brightness contrast, hue saturation, curves, levels, and other color correcters are all calculated together as one operation, so the image doesn't get crunchy and lose it's integrity).
It has arguably the best written software manual EVER. Seriously.
It's really non-linear.
It's more suited towards compositing and finishing, and less towards graphics content creation. If you are switching from AE to Shake, download the AE plugins for shake from High End 2D.
And:
IMO shake is good at tuning fine color corrections, 3d composite, roto and tracking.
And:
Shake is good at setting up things at the core of what Compositing is all about. Concatenation and Piping nodes together. It seems to be more of a VFX kinda tool. I couldn't see design type or anything to mograph with it.
But it does do some cool things that in AE takes longer or can't do. Like being able to offset the tracker and the roto tool. You can link a tracker to a mask point.

Alright, I decided to go with an MSI GTX 980 Gaming w\ 4GB DDR5 for the video card since it has a good amount or VRAM, CUDA cores, and is ranked as one of the best graphics cards available right now. I'm sure by the time I can afford to build the rig they'll be even more reasonable. Right now they're actually under $700 which imho is pretty damn reasonable already for the performance.
You mentioned that HDD RAIDs need larger sets to see fast speeds. Should I use SSDs instead? To me it doesn't matter either way. I would rather pay the higher price for SSDs if I'm going to get a big performance bump. You also mention RAID 6. Would you recommend that over RAID 10? Like I mentioned in my original post, I am very new to using raid and want to use the best array for my needs. I am going to be working with pretty large video files, especially once I start editing 4K video, and did read that HDDs work better for some odd reason than SSDs with large (non-random?) reads (and possibly writes).
Hypothetically what do you think about this drive setup?
4 x Intel 730's using RAID 10 (internal hot swapable) for my OS/Apps which would give me a good performance bump from using a striped array but also the redundancy I need in case a drive fails.
2 x 4TB HDDs using RAID 0 to store completed projects. I'll also be backing up to an external drive, blu-rays, or a cloud server.
1 x 256GB SSD to use as a scratch disk for any apps that need it, primarily for Premiere & After Effects
Can you think of any reason to add another drive in there somewhere I'm not thinking of, or change that setup at all? Thanks for your input btw.

  • Is Live Type Apples version of Adobe After Effects?

Hello i was curious to know if live type is apples version of adobe after effects? now i know they are not the same but i started learning adobe after effects and it seems very similar...I don't want to try and learn another program if i can do the same thing with live type... I was looking into video editing as a career and have been teaching myself a bunch of things but i see that in the video production field that Adobe after effects is used alot and ppl want you to be familiar with it.. So i'm basically asking with the knowledge can the same thing be accomplished in live type as in after effects ?
    Thank you

    Hi jbonante
Despite its name, LiveType does more than just manipulate text and create title cards.
If you do a search of YouTube, you will many interesting examples of how LT has been used, for example one I did:

  • Motion or After Effects

    Folks,
I suspect that I'll get very pro-motion answers here, but I'd like to know people's opinions about which is better: Motion 3 or After Effects CS3. I know that there are always differences that make comparing any two programs like apples (pardon the pun) and oranges, but, overall, what do you all think?
I'm asking because I only have enough money to upgrade to either FCP Studio 2, or Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and After Effects CS3.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Lloyd

Tracking in Motion 3 works but... as with any program it depends on what you have to track with and what you want to do with that tracking info. Also of course how good you are at tracking. Shake can provide a wealth of options for your compositing, including tracking and chroma keying, but as you said it would be another interface to learn. If you know Motion and your not trying anything too hard with tracking elements Motion does work plus you get all the other benefits of updating the other programs in FCS.
If you have the time and inclination (well I guess also need an Apple store) go to the Apple store and sit down at a machine and try tracking in Motion. This might make you the "weird guy at the computer" but I don't think it would be a problem.
If you haven't already seen this site check it out. Look under what's new for some tracking demo's

  • What software to buy- Shake? After Effects? VisionLab Pro?

I am looking for an effects/compositing application for effects like muzzle flashes, flames, chroma keying, electricity/lightning etc. I have FCS2 but Motion doesn't seem to do all of these things well. Therefore, what works best? What is easy to learn and use well? How does quality compare? I have downloaded the demo for VisionLab Pro and it seems great, but what else does Shake or anything else have to offer? For reference, I am an experienced high school student editor, not a full-time fx pro, so ease of use plays a role too.

Visionlab Pro seems interesting for what you seek. But the all-in-one compositing and effect tool box I would go for is After Effects. It's pricey but it has so much in it. I love Shake but you have to feed Shake with things, you don't have an build in particles system for example. Shake is more film compositing than anything else, great for keying, chromas, color correction, wire removal etc. After Effects can do all these things. And it's layer based so you get the hand of it quicker.
On Shakes upside: it's cheaper and node based. and if you learn node based compositing you can work in the industry, Shake is still very much alive out there @ the vfx houses.

  • How does Motion 2 compare to After Effects?

I have used After Effects in school but now that I am using FCP instead of AVID I was thinking that it'd probably be a good idea to switch over.
I mainly want to use Motion 2 for adding filter effects and transistions to my videos. Is the connectivity between FCP and Motion such a boon that I should learn how to use it?
From messing around in Motion I've found that it seems much more complicated than After Effects and a bit more unwieldy (but I've barely scratched the surface).
When I looked at what has been added in Motion 3 I was a bit upset that I bought FCS1 a couple months before 2 came out. Motion 3 seems to be much improved, but alas, it's too late.

I agree. I too am in the job market and find that there are more jobs that ask for After FX experience than Motion. Having learned both, I made the decision of just working with Motion and developing my skills to a higher level.
Motion is way more enjoyable to work with. I produce faster with it and it does just about everything that After FX can do. If it doesn't...I go to Shake 4.1. Shake has a much better keyer than After FX. You can combine Primate and Keylight together and get much better results than After FX. I even like the work flow better in Shake than I do in After FX.
I find that, for some reason, I am more creative in Motion than After Effects. It just flows nicer for me I quess. As far as intergration with Flash, there honestly isn't that much difference. While After FX imports and exports .swf and .flv files....Motion or should I say Quicktime exports to .flv. Both produce large file sizes...I think Motion was a few kb smaller than After FX....I usually end up exporting small image sequences with a alpha channel into Flash. Both Motion and After Effects export image sequences.
Once Motion 3 is out and stable, I think the gap will be alot closer to After FX. I am going to the Final Cut Studio 2 on tour in NYC on Tues, I'll be sure to ask about cast shadows! How can you leave that out?
As far as getting jobs, I want to find a company that uses Macs and Final Cut in their workflow. Companies that use PC have no choice but to use After FX....Who wants to work on a PC!
    Best Regards,

  • Shake vs after effects which one

  • Final Cut vs After Effects vs Shake

    Hi everyone
I have been using Final Cut Studio on an Intel mac for a short period and while fcp and Motion cover most of my needs I do need a little bit more on the animation side.
Importing graphics from photoshop and illustrator and then manipulating them with live video is the majority of my work.
Right now I would like to have a good rotoscoping/paint solution to expand the possibilities of fcp studio.
My question is what would be best. A plug-in such as Silhouette (though I dont htink its available for Intel macs), Shake (maybe overkill?), or just fork out for AE to complete my toolset??
Any experiences and advice much appreciated.
    thanks
    Xavier

Then your only serious choice is After Effects.
<div class="jive-quote">Very rarely see a studio or serious motion graphics artist who doesn't, but its an expensive option... < </div>
This is not true at all. AEpro7 is much less expensive than any previous version and it's packed with tons of new stuff and filters for which you are not paying any additional charges. An it incorporates beautifully into CS2's Bridge functionality.

  • After Effects or Shake? Which one should i choose?

After Effects or Shake? Which one should i choose?
I never use them before, now i want to choose one to learn.
Im a Mac fans, i do want to use the Mac family product, Shake, but a lot of my friends prefer After Effects.
    What one is better? Why?
I just a film student, a beginner, which one is better in the video production area? Which one is better for me?
    Help me make a decision!
    Thanks!

if you said you were looking to create motion graphics and comps (bumpers, titling and ad's) for a video company or local television station, AE would be a really good match (Shake would likely require additional motion graphics help (like  Motion and perhaps even audio and edit applications as well.)
However, if you are a film student and intend to learn and create composite images for film (and video) then your choice is also as clear, absolutely, Shake.

  • I am new to After Effects and Motion 5 and I have a question

    Hello there,
I am currently working on a personal side project for a family member. She would like me to make a video with recorded audio and pictures from the 1920’s for my grandmother. I would like to give the parallax and 2.5D effect a try but as I never used After Effects or Motion before I am a little overwhelmed.
I have about 80 images to animate. Right now I am in the ‘Photoshop phase’. I am going through each image and separating the foreground, mid-ground, and background, into separate layers and saving the .psd files to eventually bring into Motion 5 (or After Effects) and animate.
    After seeing this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVrYyX3bHI8
I really wanted to animate the images I had in a similar fashion. I really loved how they seemed to move and know that I can accomplish this appearance with the pin tool in After Effects. After seeing this video however, I continued looking into the 2.5d effect and found this movie for Motion 5:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmxlm2nkVLA
I bought Motion 5 because I thought the interface seemed more user friendly to newcomers (like myself), the effects were similar, and because I couldn’t afford to pay for After Effects every month.
But now I am kicking myself. Motion 5 is lovely and I do like the camera effects but I don’t think I can accomplish the ‘puppet’ effect with it like I can in After Effects. Does anyone know if it is possible? Is there a plugin for Motion 5? Can I send my .psd files into Motion 5, set up the timeline and cameras, save it, and then move it into After Effects and then use the pin tool to manipulate the images and layers?
I have read that some say it is hard to move Motion files into After Effects? If this is the case, could I save the Motion file, open it in Adobe Premiere, and THEN open it in After Effects and play around with it?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advanced.

2.5D is fairly easy to do in Motion... that's the good news. The bad news is: if you don't know what you need to do to accomplish it, it's practically impossible to do easily or well.
The first problem to overcome is perspective, and the other problem is parallax.
These two tutorials (by Mark Spencer) will give you all the information you need dealing with moving Photoshop Layers in Z-space. Even though the point of the tutorials is a "fly through", the same information applies to creating 2.5D. Just animate the camera laterally (sweep) instead of dolly.

  • Importing Motion project into After Effects

I am attempting to import a Motion 4 project in After Effects CS4. I am using the suggested instructions:
1 In After Effects, choose File > Import > File.
2 In the Import File dialog, choose All Files from the Enable pop-up menu.
3 Click to select the Motion project you want to import.
4 Choose QuickTime Movie from the Format pop-up menu.
    5 Click Open.
Motion does not show up in After Effects. What went wrong?

Brief title for your desired feature: Ability to move entire Motion Path (as in AE)
How would you like the feature to work?
The same way it currently works in After Effects: ability to move an entire motion path by selecting all of the motion path's keyframes before click-moving one of the selected keyframes in the Canvas/Program Monitor.
Why is this feature important to you?
This feature makes it so much more efficient to move a motion-animated asset to a new location without inadvertently changing the motion path.  This tremendous workflow efficiency works wonders in AE and could work equally well in Premiere Pro.

CS5 allows creation of buttons in AE, but for plain navigation options, I think it is just as easy to add in Encore or Photoshop.
