SHAKE and FCP keyboard question

Hi Forum, I went to creative cow, but thought I'd ask here too.
I've just got SHAKE (and a box-load of tutorials) and I see I'm supposed to use a 3 button mouse. I was thinking of getting the bella keyboard with jog/shuttle FCP shortcuts. Can that Jog/shuttle be used like the mouse? Or is the "mighty mouse" or any other recommendation better? I know a lot of you use SHAKE and your opinions matter before I drop the 180 bucks on the keyboard!
thanks
Mark

Hey there,
While I'm sure the bella is pretty sweet, a mighty mouse will do the job. I have a logitech thumb ball and it works fine. Occasionally I'll use a wacom for roto.
Hope it saves a couple o' bills ^^

  • Keyboard question fce vs fcp

    Hello:
Presently, I'm using FCE. I intend to update to FCP for my next project. My question: Are the keyboard functions the same for FCP as FCE? (my understanding is one can program FCP keyboard functions) Or should I invest in another K&B cover for both my IMac G5 and Macbook Pro?? Thanks in advance,
    Russ

Check out the two links on this thread to see the FCP6 and FCE shortcuts:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1973457&tstart=0
Pretty much all of the FCE shortcuts are applicable to FCP, but there are other ones in FCP that don't appear in FCE.

  • Shake 4.1 and FCP Campatability

I know that Shake 4.1 and FCP 5 provide full integration but does this same integration exist with FCP 4.5?

    no.
You have to do it yourself. Export the files from FCP, create your script, render from Shake, import into FCP. Not too hard, I did it for years before Shake4 and FCS5, but it's so much nicer now.

  • General workflow between FCS and FCP question....

    Hey all.
I'm totally new to FCS, and while in a few hours I've figured out a lot about how it works, what is totally eluding me is how to establish an efficient work flow back and forth between FCS and FCP...it's really driving me crazy.
Yeah, I know, read the manual...but nothing I'm finding anywhere seems to be a really direct, straight-up description of how to get a FCP project up and running.
Specifically I am dealing with the whole "checking out" a project thing, creating proxies, etc., it just feels very awkward. The test project I'm working with has 1 (ONE!) clip (granted a 28GB HD clip)...but FCS is not allowing me to make a proxy into the cache, this is after I already took that clip into FCP, cut it, saved it, checked it back into FCS just to make sure I got the basics of flowing back and forth down.
I wish I could be more specific, but I really really really just want a basic explanation of how to use the FCS as, you know, a server.
Anyone who can point me in that direction is a GOD!
    thanks,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,
Here are the specific sections of the manual that should give you the best explanation regarding the Check out/in workflow for FCP projects in Final Cut Server:

  • Problem with overwrite and insert keyboard commands

I'm a new user, switching from FCP. I edited one project successfully with no trouble a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm in a second project and having a weird difficulty. Using a pretty new Mac 8 core tower.
The insert and overlay keyboard commands (comma and period keys) don't work. They still work in the old project but not this one. If I start a new sequence and copy my timeline to it, the commands will work for awhile but ONLY with video, not with the audio tracks. Drag and drop works fine but that really slows me down.
The clips I'm using are all the same format (H.264 from Canon 5DII and some still photos) as the first project. Only difference in this project is lots of chroma keying and some resizing of background still photos. Nothing unrendered.
I started a new project just now and imported the problem project into it, started a new sequence, copied old sequence, and I get the same problem. I can drop in video with a keyboard command but not audio. Earlier it was not even doing video. Yesterday when I'd start a new sequence and do the same thing, it would give me video on the keyboard command but then eventually that would stop and it would do nothing. At one point the cursor would move over the width of the clip, as if it had been dropped into the timeline, but then that stopped as well.
I've trashed preferences and that didn't work. I did that according to a procedure I found online. It said open up PP while holding down the Shift and Option keys. I did that twice. Nothing.
To summarize: Keyboard commands for overwrite and insert edit do not work in this project but do in an older project.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well, thanks to an email from another person who was having the same problem, it's all solved not.
Operator error. Dang. Who knew--in FCP you select a track by clicking on the V or A buttons to the far left. In Premiere Pro you have to make sure BOTH the far left button and the one to the right that says Video 1, Audio 1, etc. are also clicked. They BOTH have to be light gray. In my first project, everything was properly activated but in the next project apparently they were not and that carried over to succeeding projects (even though I didn't change anything...at least consciously).
So all as well now. No glitch, no bug. Just good ol' fashioned operator error. I will wear the dunce hat today.

  • Output to .avi from Shake?  I'm very new to Shake and Apple.

Hi, I have just made the switch from PC to Mac. I've got a mac mini and bought Shake solely to use the smoothcam feature to clean up the camera jitter from my videos, especially the video I took of my buddy's wedding. I got suckered into being the videographer.
I imported the original .avi files into Shake and seem to have learned intuitively and from the online "tour of shake 4.1" how to use the smoothcam node, but now how can I output or render the "corrected" video into a .avi or .mov or any format straight through shake.
I know I should probably have final cut pro but I don't have the money just yet to buy it, at the moment I've just got shake and need to use shake to output these files, if that's possible.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    -Pete

    Peter...
Patrick's FAR from being condescending. Shake isn't for the faint of heart. It's an honest-to-God $3000 compositing program used by the likes of ILM. It was designed for UNIX-heads who don't even use the interface!!
Things as simple as File Ins and File Outs aren't easy and aren't 'Mac-like' -- it will WILL take some reading up on. Doing the tutorials even the first one will give you an overview of the program and how to handle ins and outs.
Now... I have to ask why are you using AVIs?????? What possessed you to capture to avi? How did you get the files on your computer? How will you get them off? Do you have any plans for that? Going to iMovie are you? You know what kind of movie format you need in iMovie?
Before you get too far in over your head on your mac mini... I'd suggest also reading up on Shake in the manual and doing some of the tutorials. Won't take you but an afternoon tops to get thru two or three of them.
Will pay off in the long run and maybe you'll even answer a few questions here so Patrick can help us with really tough questions re shake.
    Thanks,
    CaptM

  • My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation. In OSx boot it keep Win keyboard. How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

My MacBook Pro keyboard not working correctly after Win7 bootcamp installation.
Installation went well but when I boot either with OSx or Win it always keeps Windows keyboard.
How can I have Mac keyboard in OS boot and Win keyboard in Win boot?

Hi - I have the exact same model as your MacBook and had a few questions as mine is acting up. I upgraded the ram to 8gb (2x 4GB ram) and ever since then my computer has not been running as smoothly and the start up time is horrendous. Have you encountered this problem? And if so how did you fix? What would you advise me do?
I was thinking of reverting back to the original factory 4GB then rebooting the entire computer. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

  • T500 keyboard question

Hi.  I'm new to the ThinkPads -- I bought a T500 for work a month and a half ago, on the recommendation of a colleague, and have just now started to use it for my day to day work.
After about a week of use, I've noticed that the arrow keys, particularly the right key, has an annoying 'clack' to it, almost as if it's bottoming out.  It's much louder than the rest of the keyboard, which is fairly quiet.
I've 'googled' this issue and it appears that others complain about "keyboard flex" in the T500.  I'm no connoisseur, and I have a feeling much of what goes on in the discussion (such as http://lnv.lithium.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T500-Keyboard-and-Flex-How-bad-is-it/m-p/6072...) is beyond my reach.  My simple question is this: is my clacking on the right key a result of "keyboard flex"?
Also, regardless of the flex question, is there a way for me to resolve this key clacking without sending anything in for repair?  I've made the full switch to this laptop for work, so I really don't want to give it up if it's something I can fix on my own.

I have not experienced this specific noise, but do not think it would be related to the keyboard flex complaint.  That stems from a gap under the keyboard, mostly on the left side, making it feel spongey and sloppy.
You should look carefully at the keyboard there to see if that specific key is touching the case itself, something like that.  You might also remove the palm rest screws from the bottom, and carefully remove the palm rest and reset it and the keyboard to see that eliminates the noise.  With the palm reset removed, you should at least be able to see what is causing the noise.
If the keyboard is bad somehow, they can send you a new one and it won't be out of service.  It's pretty quick and easy to change it out, if necessary.  But an inspection before you call will probably help.

  • Snow Leopard and FCP

I have a couple questions about Snow Leopard with Final Cut Studio.
First, in a quick search, I saw a couple folks saying that the experienced crashes or other basic problems under Snow Leopard. Is that a common problem from what you folks have seen?
Second, does render performance speed up due to Grand Central Dispatch distributing it across more processors in the system, or just by the greater horsepower of 64-bit operation?

For me, at least, there were issues but they were corrected by the x.0.1 updates released a few weeks ago. I was on 10.6.1 at the time and have recently updated to 10.6.2, things seem all good.
In case it matteres, my main editing machine is a 2007 8-core that I simply upgraded to SL (I did not Erase-and-Install). With just 10.6.0 and FCP 7.0.0, I would get regular crashes with FXplug Filters. I have an ATI X1900X card.

  • Send to 'Shake' from FCP not working

Well i sort of lie, it does open shake and open a file, but it's never the correct footage. He's is what I do, tell me if I'm doing something wrong.
    1. Select footage that I need to do some shake suff with by highlighting it in the FCP timeline.
    2. Go to 'File' 'Send to' Shake
    3. Shake opens but with a completely differn't part of the video I am editing. The only way I have found for it to work is to actually export the clip and use the 'Filein' into Shake, which works, but is time consuming.
    Can anyone help.
    Thanks.

If you have a speed change or maybe subclips, you could get what you're describing...

  • FCP Keyboard Stickers

Does anyone know if/where I can get new keyboard short-cut stickers? I'm purchasing a new computer soon and would like to put these on my new keyboard. And/or, does anyone know of a company that might sell keyboards with the short-cuts printed on the keys, or maybe an overlay?
    Thanks!

Many Apple retailers sell Key Cap replacements that have the shortcuts, but IMO they are severly overpriced. You can also buy FCP keyboards, complete with jog wheels if you like that sort of thing. My favourite is the simple laminated sheet of shorcuts that you can slide out from wherever you hide it whenever you want to know a shortcut.
Do a search here for more details, this subject comes up once in a while.

  • FCP keyboard

i'm considering to buy one of those FCP keyboards
any reactions regarding using this keyboard plz

You might want to ask in the Final Cut forums. You'll be more likely to get opinions there. Creative Cow and the LA FCP Users Group would also probably be good places to ask for opinions. The LAFCPUG has a review of the Logic keyboard and the Post OP keyboard, if either are the one you're thinking about.

Hi my down arrow key has broken and I am looking to replace my keyboard but its been quite hard to find the infomation I would like.
I can see my laptop has the two ports for a backlit keyboard (4 pin and the normal keyboard one) but I am unable to find a part number for this and I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find what is compatible ( long shot question)
If not I am unable to find a link for the differences between the textured and molded keyboards (currently using a textured PN 570228-031) but as I have to replace my keyboard I would like to explore angles
