Shake to FCP

Hi there,
Iam new to this forum. Hope I can help others in the future.
Recently I got Shake 4.1. I been editing with FCP for several years.
The problem I encounter is the following:
I can export from FCP to Shake my clip, then I can process filters and all the great things that Shake offers...
But when I try to go back to FCP the clip goes OFF LINE (red). I have try to interpret the instruction manual many times, I have try to get info on the net, I even called Apple and they sended me to this forum...
So is there anyone that could describe in the most easy possible terms my biggest wall to conquer Shake:
How do I fileout? What are the steps?
I did the render, I did what the instructions say and is not working, try to set up the FORMAT (DV-NTSC) and the Quicktime selection... and still bad luck.
Thanks in advance!
Daniel

I work with the latest Mac X OS
Mac QUAD 4 GIGs of RAM
FCP Studio

Cappy thanks for the answer...
The Connect button is not active.
I was never beeing able to see the entire process from export to import.
Can you confirm I am doing the right steps?
FCP > select clip > right click > name the 3 selections >
export to Shake.
Do the Shake actions...
Select all the nodes, fileout and then go back to FCP
were the clip goes OFF LINE (and the thumbnail does not represent the actions of shake is like a copy of the original fcp clip)
Is there a setting at shake I am missing?
or my dyslexia is kicking in? I know is human error!

  • Send to 'Shake' from FCP not working

Well i sort of lie, it does open shake and open a file, but it's never the correct footage. He's is what I do, tell me if I'm doing something wrong.
    1. Select footage that I need to do some shake suff with by highlighting it in the FCP timeline.
    2. Go to 'File' 'Send to' Shake
    3. Shake opens but with a completely differn't part of the video I am editing. The only way I have found for it to work is to actually export the clip and use the 'Filein' into Shake, which works, but is time consuming.
    Can anyone help.
    Thanks.

If you have a speed change or maybe subclips, you could get what you're describing...

  • SHAKE and FCP keyboard question

Hi Forum, I went to creative cow, but thought I'd ask here too.
I've just got SHAKE (and a box-load of tutorials) and I see I'm supposed to use a 3 button mouse. I was thinking of getting the bella keyboard with jog/shuttle FCP shortcuts. Can that Jog/shuttle be used like the mouse? Or is the "mighty mouse" or any other recommendation better? I know a lot of you use SHAKE and your opinions matter before I drop the 180 bucks on the keyboard!
    thanks
    Mark

    Hey there,
While I'm sure the bella is pretty sweet, a mighty mouse will do the job. I have a logitech thumb ball and it works fine. Occasionally I'll use a wacom for roto.
Hope it saves a couple o' bills ^^

  • Shake "v" FCP for resize and zoom

    Hi all
Anyone any opinions on the quality difference between a resize, possibly with a zoom in, on FCS2 or shake. Will they both be the same?
All at HDCam 4.2.2 10 bit res. Looking for the very best here.
    John

FCP has taken things from Shake in recent versions... optical flow... smooth cam... starting to use the same engine.
That said - I'm not sure FCP's scaling algorithm is much better than 'see this pixel? make it bigger'.
    I'd go with Shake.

  • Importing 16:9 footgae into Shake from FCP

I am a new user to Shake, and I have green screen footage I have filmed in 16:9 (PAL) on my Sony FX1 camera for compositing as a test and I am importing it into Shake but It is stretched vertically.
I am outputting it as DVPAL 48KhHz, should I be doing it another way to get it as the natural size in Shake?
Also do I need to put the .mov extension on the file?

Wow - greenscreening DV. This will require some care to achieve good results, but it can be done. Some horizontal blur on the chroma can help. There are also some macros available for download on the http://www.highend3d.com/shake/downloads/ site - a great resource, btw.
There is a whole section of your manual that discusses dealing with anamorphic footage, beginning (in the PDF version, anyway) on Page 209, entitled Importing Video and Anamorphic Film... Starts with About Aspect Ratios and Nonsquare Pixels.
    Hope this helps,

  • Stablizing camera shake

Hi, I'm a bit of a newbie to FCP...
Is there a way to help stabilize camera shake in FCP 5?
FP iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Welcome to the family,
We get posts like this many times each day and you can choose to accept this response as advice or in some other way. Up to you.
Open the index to the manual or open the online help system. Look for stabilizer online. The index isn't very well constructed so it isn't always easy to use, so look for image or effects in the index instead of stabilizer. The online system is copy of the manuals that Preview or Acrobat will parse instantly.

  • Update from Shake to Final Cut Studio?

    Hi,
Since Shake has been unfortunately discontinued, is there an upgrade path to Final Cut Studio available? To me it seems that Motion is replacing Shake, but i do not find any info on upgrade from Shake to FCP.
    Anyone, any ideas?
    cheers, Petteri

Motion doesn't come close to replicating Shake's functionality (After Effects comes closer but even that is still a way off). I think it'd be better to play around with the compositing features of Motion to make sure they meet your needs before you ditch Shake for Motion.

  • Shake's output is terrible! can anyone help?

I've been carrying out a green screen test using shake. The footage is HDV and I sent the shots over to shake from FCP. In the viewer in Shake the quality isn't the same, it's grainy and pixilated.
I added the Key light effect and played with parameters until I was happy. I then rendered the file out node and the grainy/pixilated issue was still there.
Is there anything in the settings that I am supposed to change? Be it the render settings or the input settings?
I've attempted to use shake before and have given up because of this issue. Any advise would be extremely helpful.

Be sure to set the proxy mode to BASE (little pulldown menu in the upper right
    of the interface.)
Officially, Shake doesn't support HDV (Shake Manual, p. 167). Although many
people work with HDV in Shake successfully, it's risky. Try exporting to ProRes 422
or Apple Intermediate Codec before going to Shake.
Keep in mind that HDV uses a 4:2:0 color space. So you'll get better keying results is you
blur the chroma first. Here's an article that discusses the technique for mini DV footage:

  • Shake vs Smooth Cam

I have some 1920 x 1080 29.97fps clips that need to be smoothed out. FCP has two options the Smooth Cam filter or export to Shake. Which does the better job? Smooth Cam appears to be quicker and easier to operate. Is there an appreciable difference between the quality outputs of them?
    Thanks
    Kent

The smoothcam code was ported from Shake to FCP, so I'm thinking they'll both do the same job...

  • Shake Quicktime Changes Speed of Movie

I made a video with me playing drums, bass, and guitar in a band with myself. Obviously timing is extremely important in matching up the sounds to the video here. I had to do some rotoscoping in shake and after rendering the shake project into a quicktime file, the video is significantly slower. The music won't match up with the video now. Does anyone know what caused this?

I've had this problem in shake and I can say that the real issue is the export codec you used from either Shake of FCP. e.g if you edit DVC Pro 1080 on the timeline in final cut and export the clip to shake for editing you have to make sure you use the DVC Pro codec at 1440 by 1080. If you use it at 1920 by 1080, there is a change in the play back speed after export... So you should check the codec you shot with... You should make sure you know the exact frame resolution and codec you shot with...

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and OSX Lion issues

I tried to upgrade to Lion on my Mid-2009 MacBook Pro, but afterward I tried to startup Final Cut Pro 6 (which is part of FCS 2), only to be told that FCP6 is a PowerPC application and it wouldn't run. I don't understand this, since I have Shake 4.1 installed on the same computer, and both applications are Universal Binary; after the lion install Shake still continued to work (Shake is older than FCS2, and Motion replaced Shake) while FCP didn't! I had to wipe my haddrive and downgrade back to Snow Leopard, just to use FCP6! What gives?

Pardon the snarky reply, but from a professional editing point of view, one NEVER updates a working machine, unless something is offered in the new OS that one needs right then and there.  And when one does update, one needs to do a boatload of research first, to make sure that every application they rely on is compatible with the new OS.  Because if it isn't, it means the edit station cannot function properly, and that means that one cannot work and make money with that station.  So ALWAYS look, and look well, before you leap.
You want to make use of iCloud, when it is "finally rolled out."  OK, why not wait to update the OS until it is rolled out?  You don't need it now, you need it when a feature comes available.  SO use what you have until it comes, and then research to make sure things work.  And if you really need iCloud, can you not just get another computer with Lion to access all of that?  So that your current system can run under the OS that it works well?  And yes, Studio 2 might have worked under all those previous OSes, but support for the old software will stop at some point, because Apple looks back only so far.  So this might be the point where it doesn't work.
But really, FCP 6 and LION might be an issue.  I do know that the INSTALLER for FCS2 is PowerPC based, and requires Rosetta, and Rosetta isn't included in Lion.  Lion not working with Apple's own software?  Well, yes, it does, the NEWER ones.  The older software?  As I said, they extend support only so far...they can't keep looking back if they want to look forward.  If you want things to always work with the latest OS, then you need newer software.  You cannot expect the older software do always just work...it won't.
Especially since FCP X is out...Apple doesn't give a hoot about supporting the older versions.

  • Ading Photoshop Layers

I want to ad a photoshop file in layers, so that, the image will build up as if I were clicking on each layer until the final image apears.

I want to ad a photoshop file in layers, so that, the
image will build up as if I were clicking on each
layer until the final image apears.
I don't think you can do what you want to do in iMovie HD. See: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42617
In refering to Photoshop layered files, Note 1 says "QuickTime supports import of multi-layered images in these formats, but layers will be flattened into one track on import."
You may be able to do it in Apple's high-end apps like Motion, Shake and FCP.
If you create a series of still images of each step in the transition, you can use QT Pro to put the still frames together in a movie. (File>Open Image Sequence. Be sure to number the images in the correct numerical order.)
That should give you the effect you want.

  • Where did media go?

I am a new user to Shake, to follow along with Creativecow video tutorial, started a project to experiment with SmoothCam,
had to leave project, saved all, returned, opened project in FCP and Shake,
now there is no media. There is no media in the Scratch Folder also.
It seems everything has been wiped out. Can this be? What have I done?
    Lost in San Antonio, John

Try this if you haven't already:
Double click on the fileIn node. Then, in the Parameters1 tab, click on the folder next to 'imageName.' From there, hunt for the file.
If you've done this and still can't find it, it's probably just a matter figuring out how Shake displays your computer's file structure. See page 18 of the Shake 4 Tutorial manual for some info on that.
Or, was this something you sent to Shake from FCP?
If so, do it again but take note of the file paths FCP generates (defaults). Odds are, your media is there.

  • WMV question

I have a couple wmv files, and i don't know how to get them into a usable format for FCP. I tried to compress them with compressor, but all that happened was i got a weird "mov" that shakes in fcp, has a flip4mac watermark, and has no audio. it plays in QT 7, not in X, and quicktime also tells me to download a plug in but doesn't say which one. plus the info for the qt mov (even though i compressed it) still says at least the audio is wmv. Any ideas of how/what to use to change these files? Thanks
    Austin

Now you get to have some real fun. Get a pad and pencil and get ready to do all sorts of compressions until you get one that works.
Over the years I've built up a series of compressor presets for converting wmv to qt and vice versa. I think I would first try opening a file in QT and exporting as what your timeline dictates. You could also go to compressor and use one of the advanced conversions-- or whatever it's called. Go right to your easy setup, don't do any intermediate steps.
Keep trying with one file until you get it sorted. And keep notes, you'll want them...

  • Old  bleached film

I have a 16mm color print that was originally made in 1980. Though it has been well stored, the color had badly bleached out. It's been encoded to prevent further deterioration. I've been trying Shake and FCP color correction strategies on it but so far with no success: the frames all bring up (or down) applied corrections but across the entire field so that the images are viewed as if through various colored veils. I am unable to get anything near accurate coloration for things such as running water, construction equipment, steel girders and so on, everything in the whole frame, turns green, say, or blue or red, without distinction. Needless to say there are no usable alpha channels. Bleached out film must be a relatively common problem. If anyone has encountered it and has ideas for a fix please let me know. Many thanks.

Hard to do anything with a screen grab - you should export a still.
But even with that, I was able to get it looking a little better using the 3 way color corrector in FCP and the Three Strip Technicolor plugin.
    any better?
