Shake vs. Motion for Keying and Motion Tracking? Also, best way to learn?

Hello,
I have been working in the Final Cut Studio Suite for a little while and have gotten pretty good at getting visual effects out of Motion.
However, Shake has always looked very interesting to me and from what I understand, is much more powerful than Motion.
Two effects I am most often involved with are:
1. keying out greenscreen
2. analyzing motion to match-move elements of a composite
Can anyone vouch for how much better Shake is at doing these processes over Motion and After Effects?
If I do decide to get Shake, I know I'll have to spend a while getting used to just moving around in it - node-based workflow is TOTALLY new to me.
Are there any good learning resources that Shake gurus here can recommend? I've always learned better from CDs and DVDs than books, but I would consider picking up a book to learn from if it were REALLY good.

Shake is far more powerful and flexible than Motion in both of these tasks. It offers considerably more control over the end result, albeit at the expense of a learning curve.
I mainly learned from books so I would recommend the tutorial book that comes inside the box as well as this:

I've also got a couple of Gnomon DVDs as well, which I found helpful:

  • How do I set-up my memory amount for max speed for FCP and Motion

Hey all, I have a Dual 2.3 G5 with (8 Gigs) Ram. I'm working with a new client. I want to set up my memory or whatever else to provide MAXIMUM processing power for FCP and MOTION. Does anyone have any recommended settings. I've maxed-our RAM. My card is (ATI Radeon 9600-128MB of VRAM)
Is there a setting in FCP that allows more processing power to be applied to that application ?
    Appreciate any replies

Most of FCP's speed in performing functions is directly related to processor speed. The only way to increase performance would be to use a Mac with faster processors. Performance is also related to data throughput, so if you're working with high data rate video formats, a fast RAID and/or SATA (or eSATA) media storage solution would help.
The exception to FCP performance is when rendering/processing FX Plugs; they are dependent on the power of the graphics card.
Motion is mostly dependent on the power of the graphics card.
There is no way that I'm aware of that you can speed up RAM. Having the extra RAM will just mean that you can successfully work with more applications open at the same time.

  • Libraries for Soundtrack and Motion etc

you know you have these great big resource libraries for Soundtrack and Motion etc - do they have to always be in one specific location on your hard drive, or could you move them to a separate (connected) disc and just tell Final Cut to look in a different location in Preferences or whatever? A bit like having your iTunes library on a separate drive.
    Cheers
    Al

    Yes you can move them.

  • Using Microsoft Exchange to access Gmail (Google Apps for Business) contacts, what is the best way to sync the Corporate Directory?

Using Microsoft Exchange to access Gmail (Google Apps for Business) contacts, what is the best way to sync the Corporate Directory? For instance, we have 40 staff members and wish to populate each phone with the Gmail profile. Right now we have a third party Android app that does this and copies my contacts to each phone. This is problematic. Any solutions to populate a phone with email and phone contacts? Even it it requires double entry for me...thats ok.

Oh, I meant Leopard does do more than Tiger Server.
I don't know enough about Server, even less abut Syncing.
SL is to new, not enough time to iron out the kinks yet imho.
One day SL will be better than Leo, but...
    I'd ask over in server...

My iPhone 4S will not sync with the music I have selected in iTunes.  Has anyone else had this issue and what is the best way to fix it.

    Hi,
    Setting up syncing
Before setting up syncing you should download and install the latest version of iTunes. Wi-Fi syncing requires iTunes 10.5 or later and iOS 5 or later. You can change your sync options at any time. Each time you sync, content is synced between your iOS device and computer to reflect new, updated, or deleted content.
    USB syncing
    Open iTunes.
Connect the iOS device to your computer using the included USB cable and select it in iTunes under Devices on the left-hand side. Some tabs may not appear if you do not have corresponding content in your library. For example if you do not have any podcasts in your library, the corresponding Podcast tab will not appear.
Click Apply, in the lower-right corner of the screen, to sync.
    Wi-Fi syncing
    Open iTunes
To set up Wi-Fi syncing, connect your iOS device to your computer with the included USB cable. Select your device under Devices on the left-hand side.
In the Summary tab, select "Sync with this [device] over Wi-Fi".
Whenever the computer and the iOS device are on the same network, the iOS device will appear in iTunes, and you can sync it. The iOS device will sync automatically when all of the following are true:
The iOS device is plugged in to power
iTunes is open on the computer
The iOS device and the computer are on the same Wi-Fi network
While the iOS device appears in the left-hand column of iTunes, you can select the content tabs and configure sync options.
Click Apply or Sync to sync the iOS device.
    Hope this helps

I have an iMac purchased new about 5 years ago with OS 10.4.11. I would like to upgrade to Lion. I currently have a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of ram. Can I upgrade to Lion, and what is the best way to do so?

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

  • Which codec to use for editing AND motion graphics (ala Final Cut Studio)?

I have a prosumer-level AVCHD camcorder (Panasonic HDC-TM700) and am working with Final Cut Studio. After doing a great deal of research it appears that there is NO real benefit to using any codec other than ProRes 422 for straight editing (a camera at this price point doesn't shoot images of a high enough quality to warrant using 422 HQ, which also requires more processor power, and not only does 4444 require rendering it also takes up a ton of space). However, I have read (many times) that there may be some benefit to using 422 HQ if I am doing motion graphics work (ala Motion 4). Can anyone verify this? Would it make any discernible difference when shooting with a camera like this? Even though it is a prosumer camcorder I am trying to squeeze as much value as I can out of the entire production.
    Any input or advice?
    Thanks!

  • Same Algo for Key and Cipher recommended?

    Hi,
No - but who said that this is complete sensless? If it made sense then there would be no need to create a SecretKey object for a particular algorithm. AES requires a 128 bit or 192 bit or 256 bit key so how can a 56 bit DES key be used with AES? Simple logic.
If using the JCE you had tried to use a DES key in AES then you would quickly have found out that an exception gets thrown in the init() method. A very simple 3 line test harness. This would have taken you no more than 5 minutes to cobble together. Much quicker than asking in this forum but ...
The Key and the Cipher are two independent things for a non
high skilled crypto veteran. What logic makes Key and Cipher independent? 1 minute of thought after 15 minutes with the most elementary cryptography tutorial would make you understand this.
I wouldn't aks if this is clear like 1 + 1 = 2 - is this clear!? ;)Obvious it is not clear but I do know that insecure and faulty cryptography results from people not studying cryptography. I do not mean that one must know all about all aspect of cryptography but one should have done significant background reading, especially with regards to the type of cryptography one is using.
How much background study have you done Olek?

  • Is using one Apple Account for a family of two the best way to go?

We are a family of two; at the beginning, I was the only Mc user (iPhone, MacBook Air and iMac). Then my wife got an iMac, an iPad and just ordered an iPhone. Our problem is that we are both using my same Apple Account and ID - which is fine because we want to share our calendars, phone book etc… Is this the best way to go, or should I create an Apple Account for her and then run the option Family Share ? What do you recommend ? How do I proceed with an eventual change ?

Just sign out of the account on her devices, then sign into the new account, don't forget Find My Phone (it it is active)
    iCloud calendars can be shared.

  • What and how is the best way to keep the battery strong?

No: draining to near 0% is not advisable. It's best to charge recharging at 20%:

  • What data does SNMP return and what is the best way to explore it?

    Hi All
I have some queries about using SNMP on Cisco devices.
    1. What is the best way to get an idea of what data MIBs can return?
I have entered the commmand "show snmp mib". However, the number of MIBs generated is huge!
    2. Can you enter a command on the Cisco device itself that returns snmp data?
e.g. if I want to see what data a MIB entry returns, can I interrogate it on the Cisco device itself rather than having to rely on network management software?
The reason I ask is that we are currently looking for Network Management Software. However, I have no idea what data SNMP can return, therefore don't know if what the Management Software offers is comprehensive or not.
Any suggestions on how best to get an idea the data SNMP can generate plus any other suggestions are very welcome!
    Thanks
    John

Generally speaking, snmp can query about any parameter of the system. An enterprise class device has almost all conceivable parameters instrumented thus. A device's inventory (chassis, cards, ports, power supplies, software image, etc.) and the state of its interfaces and traffic they are carrying are among the primary ones.
You can query a device's snmp variables remotely "by hand" using an open source distribution of a tool like snmpwalk. You need to know what you're looking for - i.e., the exact oid (object ID) string or else you get a long reply like you alluded to. It also helps to have the actual MIB you are querying against locally so that the output you get will be human-readable. Otherwise you'll get long numeric strings (the snmp oid) followed by alphanumeric values which may or may not make sense at first glance depending on the oid being queried. A MIB's purpose is to add that abstraction layer / interpretation to make the output more useful to the operator.
The purpose of an NMS (very generally speaking) is to give an even higher layer of abstraction to organize the querying and reporting of all these various data into a useful system with dashboards, graphs, reports etc.

  • With all of the big changes that have gone on with Lion, surely it would have made sense for Apple to have provided how the new commands work? What is the best way to learn about how things have changed?

Apple has tended in my expereince to provide intuitive software that users can grow to use and admire. Why then does Lion go off at a tangent and become unintuitive and just plain hard work to work out? I run a business and this has caused a lot of time consuming effort particularly when working out how to save files (in certain programs). Like so many products (iPhone being one), there is no guide to the great things that can be done and I just don't have the time to go fishing around online looking for tips and tricks when I've got clients who need things quickly.
Where is the best place to learn about Mac things?

    Take a look here: http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/

Unfortunately, the playback of non-iOS-native video formats (everything except mov / mp4 / m4v) is horrible through Apple TV and it, because of the inherent speed restrictions of Wi-Fi, can't be helped other than:
    - pre-converting your video files to mov / mp4 / m4v before playing them. (THis is the best solution.) For this, you will want to use the absolutely best and fastest video converter, the free(!!!) HandBrake. Don't ever think of paying any money for any video converter - most other titles are way inferior to HandBrake. (See http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/benchmark-excellent-multimedia-converter-handb rake-vs-commercial-apps for more info on this q.)
    - using a VGA or HDMI adapter and connecting your TV directly to the iPad.
In the thread at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18697551?ac_cid=sa123456#18697551 , we've also discussed this problem (AirPlay vs. cabled playback)
