Shape 3d rotation / anchor point

I'd like to recreate this kind of rotation on shape layers as they have in these transitions.
http://www.sprinklelab.com/our-work/everyme/
I've started off with a square and a centred anchor point, and with the Y axis starting at 75 degrees moving down to zero I can get a similar effect, but obviously hasn't got the same dynamic look as in the video. It's almost as if they have two anchors, or a diagonal anchor? I know these things sound ridiculous but I can't get my head around it.
How would one go about creating this type of rotation? I don't have my mathematical/ geometric brain on today.
Thanks all!

Thanks for the help guys. I have taken the proj and played around with it, not much success so far, it nearly is where I want it but 1 Can't seem to set the 'back' and 2 it doesn't stay anchored at those points as in the example
Card wipe would be exactly what I need if it would work for this 3D style of rotating the orientation. In what I created some are just, floating? But I just cant figure out how to get all the cards to simultaneously change ( but still staggered/ one starts a slight bit before the next) and have a centred rotation so that the boxes just flip orientation, and don't come away from eachother.
This is the best I can do, is it possible and I'm just a bit rubbish at using this effect? No matter what I change I don't seem to be able to get a better result.
Really appreciate you guys taking the time to explore this with me.

MAGNETIC PEN TOOL, AUTO DELETE ANCHOR POINT.
How would you like the feature to work?
like pen tool in AI, when clicking out around shape and creating anchor points, ability to hover over previous anchors and click on them to delete them,
also right click to automatically delete most recent path created , and ability for consecutive right clicks to keep deleting previous segments of anchor and path.
Why is this feature important to you?
easier editability on the fly with the magnetic pen tool..

Many people seem to confuse joining with averaging. Like Ray says, only endpoints can be joined. In your case you don't need to join the points. Select the points you want to have in the same position and Cmd-alt-J, Both, and all the points will hop to the average position.
Alternatively you can snap an endpoint to an anchor point. Put your cursor on the selected endpoint that you want to move and drag it till it snaps onto the anchor point you're aiming at.

  • How can I rotate a shape around a centre point in Illustrator?

    Hi all,
I'm trying to make a pattern in Illustrator and I need to repeat a shape around a centre point, a bit like placing petals around the stigma of a flower. I can do it in Photoshop by moving the centre point of the bounding box to where I want to rotate the shape around, how can I do it in Illustrator?
I also want to define this as a shape/pattern and use in Photoshop, how do I go about this?
    Many thanks,
    Foxy

The centroid of a straight-sided polygon is located at the average of its corner points locations. For a given path (a star, for example) you can:
    1. Select the path.
    2. Copy. PasteInFront.
    3. Object>Path>Average>Both.
For objects with curved segments, you can approximate the centroid by:
    1. Select the path.
    2. Copy. PasteInFront.
    3. Apply some command that adds a bunch of points along the curves (Object>Path>Add Anchor Points, or ZigZag with zero for Size).
    4. Object>Path>Average>Both.
If you have alot of paths you need to do that for all at once (as when designing a hanging mobile), I have a simple Javascript for that.

  • Illustrator CS5 Rotate Tool Anchor Point Bug

    Summary:
I can reproduce this bug consistently, every single time.  I am unable to set a new anchor point for the rotate tool in Illustrator CS5.
    Steps to reproduce the bug:
    1.  Create a new shape, doesn't matter what
    2.  Press R or just select the rotate tool
    3.  Alt-Click to pick up the anchor point and drag to a new posiiton
    4.  Let the mouse go- at this point the anchor stays locked to the cursor even if I click and am only able to unlock it from the cursor if I click on a new tool, but without getting to choose a new anchor point.
Also I tried this with a Intuos 2 tablet and pen with the same results.  I have an NVidia Quadro FX 3500 card installed with the latest driver as well.
I'm not sure if this issue is related, but also in After Effects CS5 if I press 0 to start doing a preview and then click away say on Firefox, then click back to After Effects, I am unable to click around inside After Effects to get the render to stop.  It makes me wait until the whole comp is pushed into a ram preview before it unlocks itself.
    Any ideas?

I too experience this problem and was hoping to find a solution.  I've tried reverting to early Wacom Driver versions with no success. I find that if you "break the connection" between the pen and the tablet then the rotate point will drop and the rotate dialog will appear.  I've found that this only works reliably when lifting the pen straight up off of the tablet til it loses signal. Not ideal for precision work.  You'll notice that the rotate point drops when you move over to the menus, so I'm guessing it has something to do with the "drawing area."
    My system specs for comparison.

  • FAQ: Why isn't the anchor point centered in shape layers?

[UPDATE: In After Effects CC (12.1) and later, you can center the anchor point within the visible content of a layer. ]
    Short answer
Because in shape layers you can have two distinct kinds of anchor points - the anchor point in the main transform properties, as in any other layer type, and also an anchor point in the specific transform properties for each shape. When you create shapes by dragging with the shape tools, it's the anchor point for the shape group that will be centered. If you want to animate the whole layer from the main transform properties, you may need to shift the anchor point so it matches the visual center of your content.
    Long answer
Shape layers are a unique type of content in After Effects.
In fact, they introduce a bit of the object/group hierarchy model in Adobe Illustrator, rather than follow the typical layer model in After Effects.
In other words, while you can definitely use them to quickly create a vector shape and then animate that shape as any other layer in After Effects, you also get the ability to create, edit and animate multiple shapes (each with its' own set of visual appearances) nested in a single shape layer.
This allows all kinds of cool animation opportunities, but it also means that a shape layer is not your typical After Effects layer.
So, when you create a shape by dragging with the shape tool, there actually is an anchor point that is perfectly centered - that's the anchor point in the transform property group for that shape group. If you double click a shape, you'll see a bounding box. This a visual representation of the transform properties for the shape group, and the anchor point specific to this group will default to the middle of that bounding box.
However,  the main anchor point for the whole shape layer may not be centered relative to the shape content. This is normal behavior - Note that if After Effects tried to center the layer anchor point relative to the first shape group you create, it would be immediately wrong when you add more shape groups to the layer. Or when you animate shape groups around.
Now, as many other things in After Effects, shape layers are designed to let you go as deep as you want. Ideally, you may want to try animating the transform properties for each shape group, since there's when things get really powerful. However, if you want to consider shape layers as a one shape per layer entity and animate in that way, you can of course do that. Bear in mind that you may need to center the anchor point yourself relative to the visual center of the content. If you don't do this, the shape layer's content will be offset from motion paths, or behave in a different way from what you may expect when animating scale or rotation.
To do this, make sure you're not selecting a nested shape group but the shape layer itself, then you can do the following:
Use the Pan Behind tool as with any other layer (this may not give what you want if you do it after creating a motion path, since it will modify position values).
Drag the hot text for the Anchor Point property in the Timeline panel, as if it was a slider. You can then re-thread the content relative to the motion path. You can also achieve this by Option- (Mac OS) or Alt- (Windows) dragging with the Pan Behind tool.
For more information on shape layers, see Drawing, painting and paths in After Effects Help.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH :-)
I didn't knew this shortcut as I didn't have to use it anyway.
but it's weird because all the other tools like even the circular gradient tool have their point visible.
Anyway, I guess you can press H with any tools.
Again, thank you, I should have ask it before. ;-)

  • Anchor points move and entire shape gets distorted from changing stroke thickness

I have a fairly simple drawing that I drew at a larger size so I could be precise with it, and now I want to reduce it down to the finished size, and thicken the stroke, but when I make the stroke thicker, my anchor points move and the entire drawing gets distorted.
In 24 years of using Adobe Illustrator, I've never seen this happen. When I click on the "up" arrow on the Stroke palette a bunch of times to incrementally increase the stroke thickness, I can watch the anchor points "walk" around as my shape gets distorted.
If I instead enter a numerical value for the stroke thickness, this doesn't happen.
However, if I use the Scale tool to shrink the drawing down to 10% or 20% size or whatever, with Scale Strokes and Effects UNCHECKED, again, the anchor points move and the drawing is distorted.
This is all on a brand new installation of Illustrator CS 6 for Mac (though I've been using CS 6 for about 2 years now, my hardrive crashed this past weekend and I had to reinstall everything).
Did I miss a little checkbox somewhere that I've never seen before that's making this happen?
    Editing this post to add:
Also, some of the objects in my drawing will not allow me to change the stroke to less than 1 point thickness. If I choose .5 or .25 pt from the pop-up menu, or even if I enter the numerical value, it jumps back to 1 point. Other objects in the drawing do not.
These objects in question are "rounded rectangle" shapes that I've used the scissor tool on to cut and then used the "join" command to put them together with parts of other shapes that were "scissored' as well.
All of the "Ellipse" and "Rounded Rectangle" shapes that I left intact do not exhibit this problem with stroke and distortion.

You are being bitten by the Align-to-Pixel-Grid. Select everything and go to the Transform panel and turn off Align-to-Pixel-Grid at the bottom of the panel; then go to the panel flyout (small triangle, upper right) and turn off Align Objects to Pixel Grid.

  • Basic 3d, how do I change rotation axis (anchor) point?

I have a photo in front of me. Now I'd like it to fall toward me, but when I spin the X axis, of course, the focal/center/axis point is the center of the photo. If it was falling toward you as if standing up on a table, the bottom of the photo would be the rotating point. I don't see a way to change this anchor point in the basic 3d filter - can it be done?
    Thanks!

The easiest way I found to do this is the following:
Make the layer you want to rotate in 3D (the photo, in this case) a child/sublayer of a new, empty layer.
Apply the Basic 3D effect to this new, parent layer.
Select the photo sublayer and drag it until it's relative position regarding the axis sytstem/anchor point is the one you want. After that, when you animate the Basic 3D filter in the parent layer, the photo will behave as if the axis system was offset to the location you wanted.

  • [newbie] Sharing anchor points across paths/shapes? + Pen visual feedback? + Show all paths?

Hey all, as stated I'm a newbie at Illustrator. Any help's appreciated. My questions:
    1) Is it possible to have anchor points be part of more than 1 path? I want to have 2 adjacent filled paths that share anchor points, so that if I move the common edge anchors, both shapes are affected. Kinda like in Flash, I suppose.
My guess is this is impossible though? Then how do people working with Illustrator a lot tackle this problem? I mean adjusting 2 shapes with several common anchor points (not shared, just in the same position), for adjacent shapes.
    2) Is it possible to set the Pen tool to give visual feedback like in Photoshop when moving the mouse to a new position to add a new anchor point? What Photoshop does is show the path segment that would be created if you were to click at the current mouse position, whenever you move the mouse. Illustrator doesn't show this with me right now, so I'm left to guess what the exact path segment will look like when I click (less convenient imo).
    3) Is there a way to always show all paths on the current layer, even if they are not selected? And I do NOT mean Outline mode, I'm aware of that. The problem I'm facing is that - when working with multiple paths - I want to see them all when adding a new path, so I can easily align anchor points and what not with the other paths, but I do NOT want to hide the image I'm tracing (which would happend in Outline mode).
    Thanks in advance.
    Victor

You might get what you re after using Live Paint. Here I have drawn an oval and a wavy line — two paths. After converting to a Live Paint object I can selectively fill and stroke any closed area or and segment.
    No.
Put the object or image you are tracing on a Template layer. Or Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) click on the eye next to a layer name to change only that layer’s view mode.

  • Can't select anchor points of some shapes in Photoshop CC 2014

I have a multi-layered file with a number of shape objects. When I go to the direct selection tool and try to click on an anchor point the points simply do not show up. Is there some property that I am not aware of that prevents selection?

Can you upload the psd file.  The Path palette shows a very small triangle path on the right edge of the canvas up some from the bottom of the document. With the direct path tool active and the shape layer targeted even if no point is selected I would expect the see the path outline shown in the Path Palette for the shape layer to be shown in the image window also I see none. Can you see the path outline? Are you  on a Mac I'm on a PC using cc2014 with todays update

  • How do I dial in the anchor point for 3D rotation?

Flash knows where the anchor point is in 3D space in order for the symbol to rotate around it, but I can't seem to figure out how to see the coordinates of the anchor point or type in new ones. Please tell me how to do this. I am already very annoyed that Lynda, a pay service, doesn't think this is vital information. Apparently they think we would never want to do anything more visually stimulating than one simple spinning logo! But I digress...
Just to be clear, I know how to move the anchor point visually on the stage, but I want accuracy. I want to be able to give two symbols the exact same coordinates to rotate around.
    Thanks for your help.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was looking for.
I also found a work around to what I was trying to do. You can select multiple symbols and rotate them around one axis, but that's not as accurate. BTW if you have any links to using 3D in CS4 that are beyond basic, I would love to see them.
    Thanks again,
    -Red-Mike

  • Indesign CS5 Rotate Tool Anchor Point Bug

When rotating any object using either the rotate tool or 'Rotate 90 Clockwise/Anti Clockwise' the Anchor point defaults to the top left hand corner of the object frame. I would expect the Default Anchor point to be the center of any object that is placed on the work area.
Each time I want to rotate an object I have to move the ancor point to the centre of the object.
    Is this a known issue?
Using CS5 with most recent updates on Intel Mac but also noticed same error on Win based systems in our office.
    Thanks
    Nathaniel

Ahh, I forgot to check that! Yes it has worked, although it's a little strange to be defaulted to top left point on all of our machines!
    Thank you
    Nathaniel

  • PS CC - how do I select individual anchor points of a shape?

In PS CS 6 it used to be possible to draw a shape, like a rectangle, and then use the direct selection tool to select and move one corne of the rectangle. However, in PS CC this does not work anymore. When I try to use the direct selection tool, all anchor points remain selected and so I can't move a single point, just all of them at once. What might I be doing wrong? Did something change in the CC version?
    Thanks!

I seem to be able to use the Direct Selection tool to edit points, e.g., on a rectangular shape, to select one only and move it around.
When I select the shape layer then choose the Direct Selection tool (white arrow), the path shows.
When I click on the path all the points show, with "hollow" handles.
When I click on only one point it turns black, then I can move it with another click and drag.  In fact, just one click, hold until the point turns black, then drag seems to work.
Of course, you've got to be VERY accurate where you click.
And Trevor, I seem to be able to drag a box around several points, then move them.  What am I doing right, accidentally or on purpose?  Is there some kind of bug being invoked in certain documents maybe that I'm not seeing in my testing here?

  • AE CS5 - Shape Layer - Anchor point moves after position keyframe

I am experiencing unintuitive (to me) behaviour with a brand new shape layer. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue. I have made a screen cap of the problem but can't figure out how to upload it to this forum.
    1. In an existing composition, I create a new Shape Layer
    2. By default the anchor point (center point) is in the dead center of the shape layer. Perfect.
    3. I turn on Position keyframing, and add a position keyframe at my current time
    4. Instantly the anchor point now jumps to the center of the composition, and so now when I scale my shape layer it doesn't scale properly
If I try to use the Pan Behind tool, I get position keyframing. Besides, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, since the anchor point was in the correct spot to start with, and it's only because of this keyframing "bug" that the anchor point jumps.
What am I missing or doing wrong? How can I add a position keyframe to a BRAND NEW LAYER that has no other animation on it, and still keep the anchor point in the dead center of my shape?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Tom

Thanks to Rick and Mylenium for your helpful answers. Rick, I'd prefer not to have to manually reposition, because I'm never going to be as mathematically precise as the software for positioning the Anchor Point dead center.
Using the transform controls on the shape rather than the global container certainly did the trick! You guys are great. Thanks.
    [rant]
In my defense as far as the constant exhortations to "RTFM", we all know that most veteran software users only go to the manual when there's a problem. You also know that Adobe's help system (particluarly in regards to search) has gotten worse over the years, not better. So when I run into a situation like this, I'm going to search through the help for what I believe the problem is: namely "anchor points", "transformations" and "keyframes", and maybe "shape layers". This is a fair amount of research, and it's exactly what I do as my first line of defense.
The second line of defense that most tech savvy folk do, is a Google search; for example: "anchor point moves after position keyframe" or "After Effects shapes layer anchor point moves keyframe" etc. And you spend your time sifting through forums trying to find the relevant answers. I feel that THAT is my true due diligence, rather than reading the F'n Adobe manual that is so very very sparse.
So after my due diligence, I turn to the experts communities, because there I know I will get educated, reliable help within a reasonable turnaround time. And because I myself contribute to these same forums in areas where I have higher than average expertise. The Adobe Forums have proven to be one of the great online resources.
Finally, now that I have a great answer from two knowledgeable experts (thanks again!), I've also enriched the community, because of the way I have crafted my post title, hopefully the next poor ******* who has a similar problem and a similar methodology to finding resolution will stubmle upon my post because I've tried to overload the title with relevant keywords that will generate hits in google.
Through my question, and your accurate answers, the global knowledgebase has improved.
So forgive me for not memorizing the F'n Adobe online help. I go to the resources that are the most useful, expedient, and provide the greatest value as a whole.
    [/rant]
    Peace,
    Tom

  • Shapes disappear when editing anchor points (CS5)

    Hello,
Some of my shapes simply disappear on mouse button release after moving anchor points or adjusting the bezier angle. The edit history does not mention any deletion; the event is registered as "move point" so I can "edit->undo move point" to have my shapes reappear.
This looks like a bug to me, but I'm quite new to Flash - I may have missed something.

Here is what they are referring to if this does not happen on everyone's then it is a common enough issue to figure out a solution but as far as I know it has always been this way, if anyone is seeing it differently we should know how they work around it so we can all benefit.
I agree if you want to draw a shape over other objects say as a clipping mask then you should not have to have a stroke which can be one distracting and two you prevent you from seeing an important small detail that might be important.
It might also be useful to be able to make this guide vary in width to mimic a stroke to see how it will effect the underlying art. I know why not just use the stroke and give it a color and transparency which is not the point the idea that you are creating art and you want to investigate you possibilities before driving yourself crazy selecting stroke colors and widths is the issue. It is more for the visual process and not finalized art and we are use to using the layer color to let use know what layer it is on so a color will only interfere.
It would be good to change this behavior and get everyone's input here of how they would like to see this drawing capability improved IMO.
I think it is a good issue to bring to the surface once again.
