Shape Builder Issue

I'm working on a celtic weave type design at the moment and previously it would work perfectly fine using shape builder, but when I started to use CS6 at school it gave me weird results.  I could use my computer at home for it, but most of the time I'm in school so I'd like to figure out what is making it change.  I'm using CS5 at home by the way.  Here's a pic of what is going on:
Notice the jumbled mess at the points that are highlighted?  I have no idea what is going on, weird curves start to form and also as a whole it starts to change the curve shape, which I don't want.  Any ideas as to why this is happening?

Rather than shape builder use appearance with 2 strokes (thiiner one for white, and a thicker one for black).
Fo roverlaps,  copy and paste in front a little chunk (you can trim with the path eraser tool under pencil).Pretend the pink is white, I colored the chunk pink so you can see better see how to do this.

  • Illustrator Shape Builder Tool:  After the latest CC update, the tool alters shapes once edited instead of just removing/adding the desired shape.  Anyone else run into this and/or have any fixes?

I am using a PC and installed the latest update of all the CC programs I use (AI, PS, AE, etc.) and within Illustrator I've noticed the Shape Builder Tool doesn't behave exactly as it did in the past. (And not in a good way.)
Previous versions allowed me to edit/add/remove shapes from one another without issue (leaving all shape paths as they were before the editing while making the desired alterations), but the newest behavior seems to alter existing paths once shapes are merged/deleted making the tool almost non-usable.
Not sure if there's a check box I'm missing or what, but have done some brief research on the problem and haven't found anything helpful.  If anyone has run into this issue and/or knows a way to correct it, I would greatly appreciate it
    Thanks!

  • SHAPE BUILDER ADDING UNWANTED ANCHORS AND PATHS

I am new to Illustator, just learning. My Shape Builder tool is exhibiting behavior that I cannot explain!
I am doing a simple flower exercise and, having successfully created an 8 petal flower with my Ellipse and
Shapebuider (minus) tool, I am trying to color the areas of the petals.  When I do this with the Shapebuilder (Color) tool,
it colors the correct areas but then also creates, unevenly and seemingly at random, additional paths (with many anchor points) right along my edges
all over my shape. It also appears to be shifting adjacent paths over slightly.
    3 images attached:
    • First, the basic shape I'm hoping to color.  Looks perfect.  No extraneous anchor points, etc. This was created step-by-step with a tutorial.
    • Next: The same shape after filling with the Shape Builder tool.  Notice the additional paths and anchor points.  Basically, this is a complete mess!
    • Finally, the colored shape with the stroke removed.  I'm completely stumped.  Help! And thanks much..
A similar issue occurs when I try to merge areas of this shape with the Shape Builder Tool.

  • Shape builder tool changing sizes?

    Hello,
I am using shape builder tool a lot to clean up dxf files generated from cad programs, where there are a lot of loose/open paths. I just noticed that when I join paths with the shape builder tool, the size of the form changes slightly. This effect is not occuring if I join the same paths with the slower step-by-step join command, and I can't see the reason for those minor size deviations?
Is there a way to change some settings to get rid of this effect?
    Br, Jörgen

I get a similar result if the strokes have an effect, such as "rounded corner" applied to them. Taking off the effect before using Shape Builder eliminates the issue.

  • Can't use Shape Builder Tool - getting circle with line through it.

I can't find any setting or anything I can change to make the Shape Builder Tool work. Using latest version.

Without more info, it can only be a guess, but be aware that the tool only works on selected objects. PRE-selected, that is.

  • Why would Shape Builder not allow Selecting (for a join)?

(As background . . . I ran through Terry White's excellent "10 things" for Illustrator video.  I even built the Yin-Yang symbol myself, from scratch, after watching his video.  So "I have" succeeded at least once in using Shape Builder.)
But, when I attempt to do . . . pretty much anything of my own design . . . I get stuck within the first minute and just have to quit and walk away.  I appologize in advance if anything sounds bad . . . I'm FULLY MAXED OUT on both anger and frustration.  Its just inconsolably frustrating how easy it is to get into a "mode" that . . . won't let you go any further.
Imagine drawing a cross.  (Like if you took real 4" x 4"'s and made a physical one, and then traced the outline around that.)
I thought I'd draw one long vertical rectangle.
Then draw an overlapping shorter horizontal rectangle.
Then join the two together in Shape Builder so its one "bounded box" with no interior "crossing lines" in the central join.
I drew the two rectangles.  Even got them centered vertically using the align button.
I select the Shape Builder and . . . . am immediately hopelessly stuck in one of two modes that won't let me continue further.
#1 (From a fresh "web" document) . . . I hover over the vertical beam (cross hatch appears, and the "+" appears because I'm in Shape Builder Add mode) and . . . cross hatch won't appear as I drag over the horizontal crossbeam.
Or . . . click (and hold) on the crossbeam . . . same thing . . . cross hatch appears, the "+" is there and . . . as I drag to the vertical beam to join . . . it won't go to crosshatch.
    Or  . . .
#2 (When I was originally trying to add this as part of a larger board) . . . I drew the same two rectangles, then upon choosing Shape Builder . . . I get an Arrow and a Circle with a Slash through it and am not allowed to select anything.
And can't find any sign, in any panel, of any "mode" I'm in (or not in) that would account for why selection is blocked.
I wasn't on the wrong layer (there is only one).
I've tried it (#1) from a new fresh drawing, and (#2) from inside a larger drawing (where I actually need it).
It takes less than 30 seconds from start to . . . . hopelessly blocked from proceeding.
Why wouldn't Shape Builder allow two pieces to join?
Why would Shape Builder show "not allowed to select"?
    Thanks,
    jkh

See, I'm in Shape Builder . . . Cross Hatch appears.
(Its probably too small on the image, but trust me . . . there is a "+" by the arrow.)
It was so simple on the Yin-Yang Cirle to Teardrop join . . . this is an EVEN SIMPLER image and . . . I'm stuck at step 1.

  • Dark path's edges after using shape builder tool or masking objects

    hi,
i have a problem with path edges after using shape builder tool or masking objects. This problem occurs when i draw bright colored objects above dark colored object. After that i have dark path's edges. Like this: http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/2051/dlm2.jpg
I have one solution (pathfinder->dive objects and delete some dark elements on the bottom) but maybe someone know another solution for this problem?

    Thank you for reply
Unfortunately, I don't have opportunity to print it, but as you wrote, it must be a screen artifact. I exported this file to tiff, then i opened it in photoshop. Everything is ok. All of the edges are clear.

  • How do I check alt+shape builder function?

    Hello Friends,
I'm trying to remove half of a shape (right half of a heart) by covering the right half with a filled rectangle, and drawing across the half of the heart I want to delete and the rectangle with the Shape Builder tool while both shapes are selected and while depressing the alt key. This should remove the heart-half and rectangle, leaving me with the left-hand portion of the heart, so I can copy/flip it for a symmetrical, whole heart.
I have removed the guides so there's no interference, and both shapes (heart and rectangle) are selected (both show bull's eyes on the layers panel).
I reset Illustrator (opened it while holding down shift+ctrl+alt). Got a message afterward saying my Live Paint Bucket plugin couldn't be found. I can't find any info on the Adobe website about restoring this plugin.
I'm running Illustrator CS6 as an app from Creative Cloud.
It looks like I need to repair my shape builder and live paint tools?
    Grateful for your help,
    Tricia

This showsboth the underlying heart and the rectangle selected, and you can see I'm drawing with the SB tool across the heart and rectangle areas. Both shapes are selected as you can see in the layers panel.
This second one shows the result: only the rectangle was removed by drawing across while depressing ALT with the Shape Builder tool.

  • Automate Shape Builder ... or ... Find Edges (?)

Hi, I'm using Illustrator CS5 to create simple black and white line drawings that I want to export as SVG, but I have a certain requirement about how the paths are defined... not sure how to describe it. So, for example, say that I create a star with the star tool. Then I make another star from the same center point, same size, but this time rotated. If you select them both and take the shape builder tool, as you hover over you'll see individual, enclosed "pieces" of the two stars... each piece delineated by the path edges surrounding the current location of the mouse pointer. If you click on one of those "pieces", it creates a new path that matches that delineated area. That is exactly what I want (so happy the capability is there)! Now, my question... is there a way to instruct Illustrator to find all such "pieces" in the drawing and convert them to these new paths as though I had clicked each one with the shape builder tool? I tried to search for "find edges", but I think I may be remembering a function in PS... its been too long.
I've searched around the forums and the internet, but it has been many years since I used Illustrator and I'm not sure of all the terminology... and maybe there is a simple way to do this and I just never knew! :-)  I have started to look through the capabilities available to scripting, but decided a forum post might save me some time. Thanks!

    Thank you very much!

  • Shape Builder applying unwanted attributes

When merging shapes using the shape builder tool I am getting unwanted attributes applied to the merged shape. For example if I have a rounded rectangle and a triangle created with the pen tool - if I click on the rounded rectangle first and then on the triangle the corners of the triangle become rounded. If I click on the triangle first the pointed corners are applied to the rounded rectangle. Is there a way to control this function? I would like the shapes to retain their attributes when merged. I have seen tutorials where a variety of shape types are combined seemingly with no problem.

It sounds like you have a "rounded corner" Effect applied to the rectangle. You may need to expand the effect first.

  • "[Shape Builder 18-119]Failed to create BSCAN shape" when use ILA in IBERT example design

    Hi all,
I am using Vivado 2015.2. And I want to use ILA in the IBERT example design to check some nets. But when I start implementation, I get these critical warnings:
[Shape Builder 18-119] Failed to create BSCAN shape for instance u_ibert_core/inst/bscan_inst/SERIES7_BSCAN.bscan_inst. Found overlapping instances within the shape: dbg_hub/inst/N_EXT_BSCAN.bscan_inst/SERIES7_BSCAN.bscan_inst and u_ibert_core/inst/bscan_inst/SERIES7_BSCAN.bscan_inst.

It seems that there are some conflicts between ibert core and ila core.
Could anyone tell me how to solve it ?
    Thanks very much!

    Hi,
Try changing the JTAG_CHAIN attribute value as discussed in http://forums.xilinx.com/t5/New-Users-Forum/ERROR-U0-U-ICON-I-YES-BSCAN-U-BS-I-V7-ISYN-I-USE-SOFTBSCAN-EQ0-U/td-p/461998

  • How do I join two letters using the shape builder tool?

I am making a sign for my logo. The 'i' in my script face is long and overlaps the following letter which the sign maker's router will not read. So I would like to be able to use the shape builder tool to join the 3 instances where the letter 'i' appears each to the following letter. No luck so far. I have turned the type into points. I have highlighted the first instance, 'i' and 'c'. but the shape builder tool shows a circle with a line through it... not working.
    Anyone have an idea?

It may take a combination of some of the Pathfinder tools, such as: Intersect, Merge, and Unite.  And, it may be a matter of manually going in and deleting some anchor points in the outlines.  Do some experimenting on copies of the instances.  Might be a process of elimination.

  • Use "shape builder tool" on "boated polygon" FAILED!

    http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/create-a-traditional-russian-khokhloma-ornament-in-il lustrator--vector-24052
    i am trying this tut, but i can't do part 2 step9.
First i can't do "shape builder tool" while select both the under shape and the cap.
Second if i create another shape then do the "shape builder tool", the left cap is another "boated polygon" as the picture i attached. I guess the boat effect applied to the new polygon shape again.
How can i avoid this automatical-shape-change thing?
ALSO, i tried on other shapes too. I use effects on one shape, then i cut or delete part of it, i can't get the rest shape as i wished. Coz the rest part got the effect again and became a new one. For example i can't get a half flower when i use boat effect on a polygon shape, coz the rest half just became a new strange flower.
Is there anything i did wrong????
    need your helps!!! PLEASE!!!!

The problem is not what you did wrong, but that the instructions are incomplete, a common problem with online tutorials.
After applying the Bloat effect, go to Object > Expand appearance. Then you can select the two shapes and delete the unwanted part with the Shape Builder Tool. Select the new cap shape, duplicate, recolor, scale, move. Select both cap shapes, create blend as I think you did earlier in the tutorial.

  • "shape builder tool" won't recognize colors

    Hey everyone,
I am extremely new to illustrator and I have already run across a problem that has been frustrating me for days. When using the shape builder tool I used to be able to create shapes that retain the color of the shape I drag from. I have since done something to mess that up, now when I create shapes, my new shape has no color.
I can get it to color solid colors but I really want it to recognize colors.
Here is a picture of my settings if that helps.
    Thank you so much

I've tried resetting teh AIPrefs and moving the folder, I thought I had the problem fixed at some points but I just can't get it to stay fixed. I just can't get "shape builder" to make new objects inherit properties of the old objects.

  • Shape Builder tool

    Hey all!
I am working on a logo that has an anchor in it. I drew the anchor myself using the pen tool, straight line tool, and eliptical tool. It appears that everything is smoothly connected and I have rounded out the corners of my anchor, and also put a round cap on my adjoining lines.
I then highlighted the whole anchor and pressed cmd+J (I am working on a Mac) to join all the edges in an attempt to make the anchor one whole shape, which I intend to fill one solid color.
However, when I use the shape builder tool, Illustrator does not recognize my anchor as one solid shape. When you hover your mouse over a solid shape, the Shape Builder tool has a dotted pattern inside your shape. This is not happening in my anchor. I painstakingly went over each "joint" and made sure that they were connected, with no avail.
There has to be something I am missing here.. Anyone have any suggestions? They are much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance.

Have you viewed it in the Layers Panel? This is the easiest way to see how many paths really exist.
You could also convert the selection to a Live Paint object and then fill it with the Live Paint Bucket tool.
