Shape gradient

When I create a gradient on a shape layer using the shapes own gradient fill, If I move the shape the gradient stays where it is.   Why does this happen and how do I keep the gradient so that it stays on the shape if I move it.

The layer transform tools will move the entire shape layer including any effects you apply like Gradient Ramp. If you applied Gradient ramp to a Shape layer and you use the Shape Object (path, polestar, etc.,) transform tools to move the shape on the layer then the Gradient Ramp will not move.
If, on the other hand, you have properly selected a gradient fill and the gradient start and end points are based on the shape and will move with the shape transform controls as well as the layer transform controls.
If you are experiencing something different then you need to send us a screenshot of your shape layer with all properties revealed.
Here's what a normal shape with a gradient fill would look like. You can see the start and end points when Gradient is selected and the shape transform controls:
The only way I can think of that would give you a gradient fill that didn't move with the shape would be to use some weird combination of Merge Paths and place the gradient below the Merge.

    Whenever I'm working in Photoshop CC, is it always showing me the standard materials that was along the program when I bought it.
    No matter what I make myself and save it or I download online some custom brushes, shapes, gradients, patterens, styles and so on, they won't show up in the program?
    When I check my Photoshop folder on my computer is everything in the right folders, it just doesn't wanna appear in my program..
    How will I get all my custom materials back? Both what I made myself and what I got by others?
    I'm using Photoshop CC on a Windows 8, if that matters..

    Check the file permissions on the relavant *.abr etc. files. PS may simply not be able to access them. that£s of course assuming you imported them properly in the first place...

  • Need help with adding shadows to a shape (gradient mesh?...blur tool?)

    Hello. I'm an Illustrator novice, as you will be able to tell from my question. I'm somewhat familiar with the gradient mesh tool as well as the raster effects that Illustrator CS3 offers, but I can't figure out how to use them to do what I have to do.
    Here's my situation. I'm creating a logo design. It is a musical note with a flame coming off of it. I want to add the appearance of the shape having shadows (yellow for the light areas, and red for the shadowed areas).
    I can't get the gradient mesh tool to work because I'm assuming the shape is too complex. I understand that I could probably just create a bunch of different gradient mesh areas and just try to mesh them together, but is this necessary? ...and is chopping my shape into mulitple sections really the best method ? (it sure doesn't seem like the logical solution).
    Then I tried using Illustrators blur effects. I'm concerned to even use them for a logo design, because the "blur" effect is raster, and with a logo; it's probably not wise to use anything raster, correct? Anyway...i can't get it to work. I created a shape using the pen tool to replicate the shape of the shadow. When i blur it, the blur is visable outside the original logo shape. I don't know how to make it stop at the path edge. Does anyone know how?
    If anyone can please help me here, I would be more than grateful. I realize these questions probably stupid ones, but I just can't seem to figure out how to do this, despite reading tutorials and watching numerous youtube videos on the gradient mesh tool; I can't seem to figure out how to adapt it to my situation.

    Thanks Steve and Jet. I've spent the lasts 2 hours calling around to different print shops in hope that I can maybe trade labor for insight into their printing process. Problem is there seems to be a lack of 4 color offset printing companies who also offer spot colors. I really wish I had the money to take a class, but when I do, I will. I just contacted a few freelance designers who seem to have a lot of print work in their portfolios. Maybe they can teach me a thing or two, and in return I can drop them a few bucks or help them with something.
    Jet, you've got me very concerned here. What do you mean by "It's not just a matter of selecting colors; it's also a matter of selecting the number of inks necessary to render them in the various reproduction methods in which the mark will be used"? Are you just stating the importance in using swatch books (Pantone)?
    You mention the importance of a design being rendered in different forms (apparel, signs, promotional items..). So how should I go about doing this? Lets say a client wants a "mark" printed on all of the things you stated. Is it my duty to find out what printer they will be using before I submit design files to them? Is it the job of the designer to contact the print shop and get their profiles for different prints (glossy paper prints, matte paper prints, t-shirt printing, vehicle graphic printing)? This is all very time consuming, so should there not be extra charges when dealing with setting up different print settings for particular print jobs?
    I've read the blogs of some successful logo designers. David Airey for example just submits his logo design to his client in eps form I believe (plus any requests). Should he be submitting a separate file for each intended use, or is this the job of the client and printer to work out?
    You've got me extremely worried that I am going to really deal someone a bad hand here. As far as I know, this hasn't happened yet; but I'm glad you have me concerned. The sad part is that I do have a 2 year degree in graphic design and I didn't learn one thing about printing and it's association with color. The little I have learned is from the internet.     I started doing freelance work because people would ask me to design a t-shirt for them, or a flyer for their small business. So I did. Now I have more people requesting my services. It's hard to turn down the money, especially in these times. But at the same time, I don't want to cause major headaches for anyone either. Until recently, I had no idea the complexity of the design to print process. Just 3 days ago, I purchased a monitor calibration device and my first set of Pantone guides. They should arrive shortly. I know, don't laugh.
    My lack of knowledge regarding this whole thing has really got me questioning what I am doing. I figured all i really needed to know in Illustrator was to use the pen tool, since my use of Illustrator has been strictly for shaping logos.
    There are just so many questions I have, and all can't be answered through a google search. I really don't like wasting your time with my ignorance, but I do appreciate your assistance. It takes some time for my little brain to absorb all of this, but I have been reading all I can from the endless tutorials and forum discussions available on the web. The problem I've found is that alongside the large amount of great info on the web, there is seemingly an equal amount of contradictory or partially inaccurate info as well. which only confuses me more. For example, most people say to design in cmyk for print (300dpi higher or vector). A rep from Pantone told me to create my designs using Pantones color swatch groups. Why would I want to start in Pantone? Don't all of their colors cost extra money (spot colors require a new printer plate and ink to be set up). Starting in cmyk seems like a more logical approach. Is he just trying to sell me Pantone?
    Sorry for my redundant question regarding the concern for non-single colored paths not being able to join. You obviously answered my question with your example.

Forums like this one are really very helpful and a great learning tool. I do realize I have to continue educating myself as much as possible. I'm not going to give up, that's for sure.

    It would be great to be able to see a walkthrough in the design process of a successful designer and the proper methods of designing for different forms of print.

  • Newbie says: problem joining shapes, gradient question

    I'm new to Illustrator, and am trying to make a logo.  I created the logo using lines and circles.  I've been able to join all the segments for the various letters without much problem (by grouping then joining), but trying to make my "k" isn't going so well.  When I try to join the shapes, a line forms under the "k", and I can't figure out why.  Here's a comparison picture (other letters are touching on either side of the "k" intentionally):
    Once I get this figured out, my objective is to use a gradient fill across the entire logo.  The tutorial I'm using says to use Path > Outline Stroke.  I can get gradients to work fine for each individual letter, but how do I get the gradient to work (smoothly) across the entire logo?

    You may select everything, Object>Compound Path Make, and then apply the gradient.
    It seems that you have joined the lower parts of the k, and I believe you can just use the Scissors Tool on both the lower corners and delete the horizontal path in between: it looks like Miter Joins, not Butt Caps meeting, as it would be if there were a separate independent horizontal path at the bottom.

    You're seeing the default application of the shape gradient fill -- which is approximately 200px wide --- total! -- end to end. If you look a little further down the params, you'll see Start: X 0px   Y  100px  and End: X 0px    Y  -100px... vertically oriented.
    You can either drag out the X's and set the Y's to zero for a horizontal orientation, or easier yet is to go into the Tools menu and select Adjust Item you'll get the onscreen controls you see below.
    You can drag the triangle shapes around on the screen to adjust your gradient end points and drag the small squares ("tags") to adjust the color ranges.
    You can double click on the line with the Adjust Item tool to add more colors, or right click on the line to pop up a contextual menu of other options (like adding opacity tags and a few other cool things like distributing the colors/opacities, or picking a preset gradient.)
    However, you still need to use the gradient tool in the inspector to set the "Middle" locations between tags.

    When you're editing a gradient within the shape (as opposed to in the Gradients palette), is there any way to use the eye dropper tool to sample an existing color? In-shape gradient editing (or whatever Adobe calls it) is useless without the eye dropper.

    Hi, I came looking for an answer to this very question... but now I have figured out a way to do what you want to do.
    1. Select the object you want to make into a gradient and make it so... it'll be the dreaded white to black
    2. Select the colour that has the fil that you want to use for one end of the gradient
    3. Now Select the gradient and notice that the fill you previously selected is in the "last color" box in the color tab group.
    4. Now drag the color from the "last color" box to the gradient color box
    5. repeat as necessary... click color, then gradient, then drag the previous colour to the gradient color box.

  • How to list contents of a document (or, minimally, find out # of layers)...(PC)

    Is there any way to see a property list of your Photoshop 'document' (insides or outside, though having available from outside would be more flexible) that shows the contents of it document? like a other programs can list a folder document's contents by type and size?).   How about the 'meta' information -- thinks like an object's inclusion date (maybe like a 'creation/date or time'), .. etc?
    At the least, can I have it list out the NUMBER of layers in my document?  (names and sizes would be nice, but just a count would be better than nothing).
    Besides layers, other included objects, like shapes, defined gradients, (not those that have been convernted to bitmaps, but define a gradient on a layer), brushes..etc...and their sizes?  Is there a 'reference count' kept for these things?  I.e. if I use a shape, and it adds it to my 'catalog', If I decide I don't want to use it, or delete it, does it stay in my document's inventory list?
    For frequently used shapes/gradients or (whatever object), does it keep a reference count?  I.e. say I use a 1k*1k shape.  @standard 8bits/color, that's 4MB (RBGA).  If I Use that same standard shape on 100 layers, does it store it only once and reference it, or does it take up 400MB?
    It would be nice to know where one's space is going or at least be able to know how many layers are in one's document (would be nicer still if this was displayable in explorer (win) or whatever file manager one uses...as a property column like one can choose 'size', or 'author'...or 'owner'...

  • Creating an infinity effect

    I'm trying to create an infinity effect with my background layers and have no idea how to do it. My animation is reasonably simple...a camera tracks into a text layer. I have placed two gradient layers in the background as a floor and a wall. The floor has a rotation of 0 degrees and the wall is minus 90. My problem is that where both layers join there is a dark line and I want it to appear seamless. Does anyone know a way around this?

    Everything I tried left a fairly defined horizon line, except for one:
    Use the same gradient for the floor as you did for the back, and reverse it's order so that the two edges match at the same color (you can manipulate the floor gradient afterwards to change in the direction of the viewer.)
    Easiest thing to do is create the back wall; create the gradient effect. Set the Anchor Point at the bottom edge. Duplicate the wall. Rotate the floor 90 degrees on X. Position in space; scale accordingly.
    Go back into the floor shape gradient and change as needed – anything but the edge color that contacts the back.
    You can't use a light. So fake one. You can add an oval shape behind the main subject - large feather value - a color blend mode like Add (turn down opacity to taste.) You can use a Reflection on the floor.
    The effect will be seemless... but also a lot more work achieving a balance.

  • Motion objects no longer in Motio's library

    After changing my Mac Pro login password, trying to solve an issue with Apple Talk, all particle emitters, replicators, shapes, gradients, and text styles disapeared from Motion library,,,
    I can find their folders in my Mac HD's Library, but not in my Home library.
    Can someone help me to solve this issue ?
    And just another question: these folders permissions are supposed to be owned by the system ?

  • Australia map eclipse

    Hi all,
    I was hoping someone had some time to quickly help me.
    I need to have an animated eclipse effect around a map of
    australia.
    I can do an awesome one using a sphere and flash. I have a
    black bacjground, then a black sphere.

    I put a gradient filled sphere behind the black sphere that
    goes from middle green to outer black.
    Then when i animate the gradient shere from very small to
    just bigger than the sphere it is behind, you get a nice glow
    around the black sphere infront that makes it look like the sun has
    got brighter behind it showing off the front spheres shape slowly.
    A bit clique but looks cool all the same.
    So .. What I want to do is replicate that effect using a map
    of australia BUT the gradient only works on spheres and it can't
    understand complex shapes. So I guess that is not the way to go.
    Do you have any suggestions ? After Effects, Flash etc.
    Can I make a custom shape gradient in flash 8 ?

    Ths model is sold with a licence installed for the region of purchase, you would have to buy a licence from Route 66 to use any other maps.
    You should be able to install the Australian maps from the software supplied with the phone on the DVD, and then you can activate it buying a licence to activate it through the "Extras" selection in the Options menu in the Route 66 software.

  • Replace PS CS3 with PS CS4

    A simple question (sorry to be a bother):  my civic organization has Adobe CS3 running on a Mac intel system, OS-X 10.5.  We want to do a full install (not an upgrade) of Photoshop CS4, but we will replace only Photoshop CS3 and none of the other CS3 programs.  Do we need to first uninstall Photoshop CS3, or can we effectively install PS CS4 right on top of PS CS3?

    I have always (until this most recent upgrade) installed the new build and left the previous in place until I was sure I no longer needed it. With the large number of brushes, shapes, gradients, and filters I use, I can't take a chance on losing the ability to create or edit a client's project while a third party developer catches up.
    One of the things I've loved about Mac since I first switched in 2003 is the fact that it can run multiple builds of the same application side by side (even if not always at the same time). At one point I had Photoshop 7, CS and CS2 all running on my G5 iMac.
    If the DVD of CS3 hadn't become corrupted, I'd still have it installed alongside CS4 now.

  • Keynote 6 Colorizing

    As creative director of a prominent design agency I implemented Keynote as our main design tool years ago. Basic objects created with Photoshop and Illustrator could easily be manipulated in keynote. Sizes, hues and tints of jpg or png files could be altered and evaluated directly in Keynote.Text and vectorized symbols could be added in a similar fashion. Basic elements could even be designed in Keynote by using basic Keynote tools, shapes, gradients, etc.
    Using Keynote as our main design tool has had fantastic results, and we've all been waiting for new utdates to this fantastic product.
    Now I've checked out Keynote 6, and found that a couple of the most versatile tool have been changed:
    • Colorizing: In the previous version, a jpg could be colorized in a rich way. A grey or desaturated image could be turned blazing red, grassy green, shining yellow or deep purple, or any other color. With Keynote 6 this possibility has disappeared. Although Temperature and Tint still are adjustable, they don't reach far enough. I think the Keynote folks have only had photographic images in need for slight adjustments in mind.
    • Placeholder: When evaluating variations of a design, the image placeholder function is priceless. The new Keynote's placeholder function is limited to images from iPhoto, music & movies. All this can be solved by adding an option to place the current copied image to the placeholder.

    It is hard to say what this could be. If you are still getting prompts to upgrade Keynote, it may be trying to open an older version. I would try and delete Keynote and then download it again. I would also try to open it within Launchpad or opening it directly from the Mac App Store to see if the error comes up again. If it does let me know.

  • Particle Emitters and other presets missing!

    In Motion 5, the Particle Emitters, Replicators, Shapes, Gradients, and Shape Styles folders are empty! They only became empty yesterday, and I didn't do anything that would effect them(that I know of). What should I do?

    That is strange. I assume you mean from the tool bar access icons and not the Library or are they missing there as well? I would trash my Motion prefferences in your user library as a first step. If that doesn't work try a new user. Just create a new admin user and see if they are there then.

    I did exactly that, and the only trouble I had was that some of my older brushes no longer worked. When I moved from CS3 to CS 4 it was in both formats, and I literally use the same brushes, custom shapes, gradients, and actions in OS X and Windows Vista. The only difference between the two is that on the Mac, my brush list (about 900 or so) loads in a single scrolable column. In Windows, it loads in row after row until it runs out of screen about the time it gets to the M's and I have to manually load anything beyond that. Which is why I prefer to do my photoshopping on the Mac.

  • Gradient won't apply to shapes as a whole

    As you can see in this screen shot, I have a bunch of dots with a gradient applied. I want there to be a fade across all of the dots not just each individual dots. I have united them as one whole collective shape with the pathfinder tool but when I apply the gradient, it applies it to each dot. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

    Another (more easy(ly controllable)) alternative is to select all, Object>Compound Path>Make, and then (just) apply the gradient as you tried in the first place.
