Hi,
I am trying to add attributes and operations to a UML class in Visio 2010. I'm getting the following error msg: Shape protection and/or layer properties prevent complete execution of this
command
I've tried the other solutions on this forum (Developer/Protection/None and ShapeSheet/Protection = 0) without success. No protection is visible. Newly created classes also have this problem.
There may be an "upstream" problem -- when I double click a class or rt click to properties, nothing shows up. All clicks results in a beep until I hit Esc. If memory serves, properties should bring up a little window about the selected
object.
If I create a new diagram, I get the same behaviour.
Any ideas or troubleshooting steps I can follow?

Hi,
As far as I know, UML class shape’s is producted by default. If you double click to edit the text then you receive the message dialog you mentioned.
If you want to add attributes and operations. Please try to use the following motheds:
Select the UML class shape’s and right-click -> Properties.
Open the UML Properties window in the left of the page: ribbon UML -> Properties (tick)

Strange shape shifting, and I don't know what is doing this?

Ok, as an experienced illustrator user I have to admit that I am stumped on this. I have been using CS5 for 3 months now (upgraded from CS3) and I notice many new features. But, as I was doing a basic drawing for an icon I noticed that my image was getting distorted when I moved it around the screen after scaling the object. This is what I am doing, (1) used the pen tool to draw icon, (2) converted the image to outlines, (3) used pathfinder to merge all shapes, (4) deleted unwanted shapes, (5) moved drawing to different position on art board, and noticed first few vector points moved, (6) scaled the object and moved it to another position on the art board and it really started to distort image.
(Note that I am moving the object using the solid arrow tool and I am not clicking on individual points when I move the image. I also cut and paste this image into a new document and it did it again. That is why I don't think it is a corrupt doc but a setting issue.)
I included some screen images of what I described happening with the image shifting its shape. I thought a setting was causing a problem, like snap to "pixel grid" or some other new feature that I am not aware of coming from CS3.
I hope I am giving enough info to help solve this issue for me. Thanks

Thanks for the fast reply. I found the "Align New Objects to Pixel Grid" was selected in the Transform Panel. I unchecked this and it looks like the solution. I checked the Illustrator Prefs, under Guides & Grid and didn't find a similar box. I only found show grids and color choices for a grid. But, I think the transform panel is what I needed.
Out of curiosity, I went to look at the "New Document" settings and found the check box under the advanced panel. I don't know how that was turned on, but that must have been the default for all of my current new documents. This preference doesn't just activate depending on the "New Document Profile" selection does it? Let's say if I chose "Web" as the profile, does this automatically select?

If no one gives a good reason and a way to conjure up the missing bits, you may start looking at the general list below (and hope you will not need to go too far down that dark road).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

As stated, no way to do exactly what you want, but an option might be to turn OFF Visibility for that Layer, if you do not want it seen, and then Flatten, and do a Save_As.
If you do want that Layer seen, but not able to be edited, then Flatten, with Visibility ON, and Save_As.
The question is, do you want the recipient to see that Layer, or not?
Next, Do they need to be able to edit all other Layers, but just not that one?
Last, what type of Layer is it?

Photoshop Elements select tool, when targeting layer or multiple layers the layer properties box pops up. Having to very carefully and repeatedly select and highlight layers to move, or merge when using Move Tool. Win 8, Adobe 12, Intuos 4 w/ updated dr

This issue has been going on for several weeks.
The Move Tool is not functioning properly when selecting and TARGETING a layer or multiple layers, as the Layer Properties box pops up requiring me to close it and try again.
How to reset or is there an update and fix for this issue.
Using Win 8, Elements 12, and Intuos 4 Pen and Tablet.

To reset the tool I suggest click on it once and then look for something like this in the bottom half of your window:
In the above picture I have marked one section in red box. You need to click on it to get the option to either reset the only tool you have clicked or to reset all the tools in the editor window. Of course you have to be in Expert Mode to get this to work.

Program error when opening layer properties

Hi! I have a really difficult problem in Photoshop. Whenever I try to open the layer properties I get the error message "Could not complete your request because of a program error." I tried to fix it but I really don't know what to do. I am working on a huge project and I need this fixed as soon as possible. Thanks!

Multiple shapes on a single layer with different line-weights & colour fills

I'm just beginning with photoshop CS6 and I'm struggling with something in a project that should be simple
I need to draw a circle within a circle within a circle within a circle etc etc.
I need to give the circle lines different weights and colours and I need to change the colour of the fills between the lines.
Imagine if you will a diagram of the Earth's cross-section. That's roughly what I'm going for.
I don't want each circle on a different layer though, it would be way too hectic.
I can't figure out how to change the properties of one shape in the layer without changing all the others.
It's super frustrating.
Can anyone explain how to do this?

A shape is a vector path that defines the shape. The fill of that shape fills the entire layer and the vector mask asks like a cutter so you only see what is inside that mask. Since a single layer can have only a single color what you ask can not be done.
What you can do, when you are satisifed with the circles is to merge the layers into a single layer, then that layer will consist of only pixels and can then have multiple colors defining it. But do that as your final step, as once it is done, it is more difficult to edit it.
What is better is to group the shape layers to hide them or convert them into a smart object. It will look like a single layer, but at any time in the future including after closing the file, you double click on the thumbnail of that layer and view the individual layers to edit them.
There will come a time when you wish you could easily change a color to stroke thickness, even a year layer. Thats where the shape layers really shine. As they are non-destructive.

looking for a script to modify the "object layer properties" of placed .indd files.
Ideal, a script wich runs on all even pages (based on master B), and sets the object layer options to layer1 visible/2 invisble.

Do not use timelines as menu transitions. Timelines are placed in a different physical location on the disc, often times AFTER your main video. So when you are on the menu, the laser is reading in one spot of the disc, then for the transition, it might have to seek all the way to the other side of the disc, causing delays and possible blackness while is searches.
For my Pro Motion Menu Kits which incorporate advanced motion menus created in after effects, I use a different process.
For the intro sequence, you obviously can't use a menu transition as there is nothing to transition from. The better method is to use a MENU as the intro sequence. Create a blank menu and set the intro animation as the motion background. Set it's end action to the main menu, and make sure you configure it to not loop. This will physically place the intro video with the other menus on the disc when it is built, and minimize any delays caused by seeking.
As for the transition, you can use the menu transition feature of encore. With the button selected, go to the transition tab under properties and set it to your transition animation asset. You can only select a single asset, so a good way to include audio with the transition is to create an after effects composition with the audio and video, then import it into encore as a dynamic linked asset, and use it for the transition.
If you want a complete walkthrough tutorial on how to set all this up in encore, I have created one for my Pro Motion Menu Kit products. It is freely available to anyone from the tutorial section of my site, and even if you aren't using my products, it can still be extremely helpful in how to implement custom motion menus using intros, moving backgrounds, and transitions that all seamlessly flow together.

HT1491 I'm using a prepaid credit card to make in app purchases. Every 2 days or so, I will attempt to make an in-app purchase and it will say "Unable to complete transaction at this time. Please contact iTunes Store Support."

     Like I said, I often play iOS games on my iPhone 4S in my spare time. Sometimes, if the game is good enough, I will attempt to make an IAP (In-App Purchase). Sometimes, I have no trouble with this. Other times it will say: "Unable to complete transaction at this time. Please contact ITunes Store Support. I primarily use a prepaid credit card by AMEX called Bluebird. I always make sure that I have plenty of funds available in it. For instance, tonight, it has roughly $200 stored. So I try to make an IAP for $10 and it works fine. Later I make another for $15, no trouble there either. Then I try to make a purchase on the same game for $2.99 and it gives me that error message.
     This has been happening on and off for the past 3-4 weeks only. Every few days it happens, I contact the iTunes Store Support, and sometime in the next 24-72 hours they get back to me. They then apologize for the inconvenience and fix the problem. But the main problem is that their fix seems to be only temporary. It happens irregardless of how much money I have available on my card. I've even had it happen when I had just redeemed a. $50 iTunes gift card and was trying to make a $5 purchase. It doesn't seem to matter if I've spent a little bit or a lot of money that day. It doesn't care for which game I am purchasing the IAP. TThis never happened to me before a month ago. Now it won't stop. And it is incredibly frustrating that it seems to happen for no rhyme or reason out of the blue. Then I'm stuck waiting on the support staff to get back to me for the next few hours to few days, depending on the day.
     Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? Or how can I prevent it from happening in the future. The support folks at Apple are nice, but I'm tired of emailing them every other day with the same problem. I'm sure they are quite tired of getting emails from me at the same frequency. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

P.S. my Internet connection is working perfectly. No technical difficulties whatsoever other than the inability to make an IAP. ... I didn't know that Time Machine was more a last resort back up instead of main back up.
Don't rely upon Time Machine to the exclusion of all else. I compliment Time Machine with a periodic "clone". TM is much better than nothing, but it's a safety net, not a hammock
Here is my understanding of Time Machine's file deletion algorithm, distilled from Pondini's FAQ, Apple's KB articles, and my own observations.
Time Machine deletes ("thins") files from the backup disk as follows:
Hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first backup of the day
Daily backups over 30 days old, except the first backup of the week
Older backups get deleted when Time Machine requires space and you deleted them from the source disk.
Therefore, assuming TM has been performing at least one backup per day, backup files will remain available:
at least thirty days, if they existed on your Mac for at least a day
until you run out of space, if they existed on your Mac for at least a week
In addition to the above, Time Machine always keeps one complete copy of your source disk so that the entire volume could be restored if necessary. Any files that remain on your source volume will be present on the TM backup, no matter how old they are.
If you are using 250 GB of space on your source disk, its Time Machine backups are likely to require at least twice that much. A good estimate of the minimum required backup volume size would be about three times the size of your source disk - 1.5 TB in your case.
A more thorough explanation would require Pondini since he has plumbed Time Machine's mysteries far more than I have.
