Shapes are anti-alised?

I've always thought that shapes created in Motion looked a little "soft" but in the rush to get projects completed I haven't worried about it too much. But now its starting to annoy me!
If I create a new project and create a new rectangle shape - so this will be a white rectangle on a black background. If you zoom into 800% and then find an edge my rectangle is not simply white against black but there is anti-aliasing on the edges of two pixels.
So, is there anyway to stop this? I don't see why I need anti-aliasing on a rectangle that has no jagged edges! I want some nice clean sharp edges - otherwise everything looks a bit soft.
And just incase Patrick comes back with "search is your friend", I've tried search for this on the forum but one else seems to have mentioned it so maybe its just me
Thanks

Here's the thing - at least what I think is the thing - Motion allows shapes/images to move on a subpixel basis. I think the closer shapes get to falling exactly on pixel boundaries, the less aliasing you see.
But you always see some aliasing - my suspicion is that Motion keeps a larger than display size buffer of the image and sizes it down to allow sub pixel movement, but what do I know?

  • Constrain painting to a color or shape area

In short, I want to be able to select an area of a single fill or shape -- Photoshop Style -- and constrain painting (with the Blob brush most likely) to within that shape. I want to be able to do this without creating a clipping path. This technique is used by Photoshop artists all the time for quick, precise shading and highlighting, and would be immensely helpful for artists who work in Illustrator, many of whom make cartoons. This would be a time-saving and workflow feature more than anything.
This is a feature I've long sought out, and actually had a long discussion in the help forum to see if such a feature already existed (http://forums.adobe.com/message/2586776#2586776). It was agreed by several of the participants that it doesn't, but that it would be useful.
When I shade in photoshop (say, a add shadows to a cartoon), I will use some selection tool, usually the Magic Wand, to select a flat color area so that I cannot draw "outside the lines." This allows me to quickly shade an area with a perfect outline that doesn't bleed into any other areas. Not only is this faster than using vector tools, it creates a more painterly or human touch to the shading, which is sometimes desirable.
In Illustrator, you currently have to resort to one of three options (generally speaking), none of which are fast or elegant, and become especially cumbersome with complex illustrations. The first involves using clipping paths to create a stencil of sorts. The second involves using Live Paint -- you draw with the blob brush outside the lines, and then select and delete areas that fall outside an outline. The third is to use the pathfinder to remove areas that fall outside an outline.
All of these methods take extra steps, can be slow, and involve clean-up. They also involve making duplicates of layers, which can bog down a computer if the file is too large. Given that Illustrator ALREADY can compute where an area of a certain fill begins or ends, or where a shape begins or ends, it would be nice if it would automate this process of constraining painting to a given fill or shape area.

Good question Doug (I'll post the response here as this thread is more relavent at this point). I believe I understand the thrust of your question, but apologies if I'm missing the point.
There are actually a few reasons why I would prefer the solution I am requesting. The main reason is personal, and it's one of workflow. I'm simply more comfortable and faster when drawing brushstrokes with my tablet than I am at manipulating pictures using vector tools or inputting settings (say manipulating a gradient, or pre-visualizing an appropriate tinting and then applying it). I like the steps Adobe has taken to push Illustrator in a more organic direction, and this would further that. And this isn't a purely superficial issue -- as an artist, your thought process is intimately connected with how you work, and not being able to work in a way that's comfortable to me impacts my ability to reach a satisfying end product. Using a marquee in Photoshop is less of an interruption to my brushwork than is manipulating a style in Illustrator.
From a purely technical perspective, it is actually kind of hard to achieve good cel shading using a shaded fill, though I'm actually glad you brought it up as it hasn't been mentioned once in the discussion thus far. I'm talking about creating the type of illustration you might see on a graphic t-shirt, where all fo the shading is done in a solid color. I don't actually mind that the shadow or highlight is a separate object -- this is actually a good thing. It's just very helpful to be able to swoosh my brush over the edge of an object (as one might an airbrush) and have a pretty looking shadow right where I want it -- AND that I can then tweak as it's a vector object.
What I do mind is the amount of labor it takes to get the edge of the shadow to adhere to the outline of the object I'm shading. No matter how you slice it, there's at least one more step than there should be, usually two or three more.
In short, it's really neat that Adobe has made vector art creation, a traditionally technical process, a more organic one like painting -- adding what amounts to a quick stencil feature (how I'm using marquees in Photoshop) would take this a step further for some artists (like myself).
I hope that answers your question, though possibly not.

  • Add to shape area

If I select the vetor mask of a layer, then easily I can use the "add to shape area" feature, and as such, two different shapes
    will behave as one.
Of course I must first select the vector mask.
But, is there a way I can go the other way?
First creating a shape layer and then adding it to a layer, using the "add to shape area" feature.
I hope you understood what I am talking about.
    Thanks

    Here's a spin on it...
    Create a path
In the layers panel, make sure the layer you want to have the path is unlocked (drag lock icon to trash can)
    Click the icon at bottom of layers panel the looks like a circle inside of a square, click the icon again. {Icon can be greyed out if no layer is selected or the layer is locked}
If you don't want/need the layer mask just drag that thumbnail to the trash can and you are left with a shape layer created from a path.
    Another option...
Create a path, select the path with the Path Selection tool (A) right click on the path, select Define Custom shape. This places the path into the custom shape library. Use the Custom Shape Tool (U) And select that shape from the library in top tool bar and drag out your shape on the selected layer.
    {Maybe necessary to hold down shift key when using the keyboard shortcut above to scroll through the tools or click and hold on the icon in toolbar to bring up a flyout menu of those tools}
So many ways to accomplish the same thing...

  • Why, when I copy and paste a shape are the rest of the pages in the doc being deleted?

I am trying to add an identical formatted shape below the first formatted shape, but when I select, copy, paste, it is deleting the following pages of the doc.  If I'm not careful, I will lose the rest of the doc.  What is going on?
If I select the shape I want to copy, it is outlined in blue and under Arrange the Group/Ungroup options are greyed out.
There is plenty of space for the new pasted image on the page and I just click below the original image being copied to paste it.
And sometimes there is this thick blue line at the top of the page when copy/paste -> dissapear.  What is that?
Also, a pasted object always defaults to Inline instead of Floating, so a new image snaps to a grid.  Anyway to change that?

Sorry I didn't notice that you are on iOS.
There are two kinds of Pages documents, Word Processing and Layout.
Word Processing documents have text on every page that automatically flows on to the next page if it does not fit on the current page. A page only is shown on screen if it has text on it. Floating objects don't count.
If you have a complicated set of objects with wrap pushing text out of the way and text being consequently pushed over to the enxt page, odd things can happen as that text, which includes invisibles like returns, spaces, tabs, page breaks etc push over to the next page or flow back to previous pages as you move objects and make room for the etxt or not.
Layout documents, do not auto flow from page to page. Each page is an individual section and things stay where you put them.
It sounds like you may be better off using a Layout template for your work. Choose one from the Template/Document Chooser.

  • I would simply like to insert two half-circles or half-moons in a Pages doc. There are no such graphics in the "shapes" area. So, ideas on how I can get those half-circles in my doc?

I would simply like to insert two half-circles or half moons in a Pages doc. The current "shapes" does not include half-circles or half-moons. Ideally, I'd like to be able to apply my colour, lines, etc., etc to these half circles and size them. I am not a graphic artist.

    1. Go down to the bottom left corner of the window and increase the zoom to 400%
    2. Toolbar > Shapes > Circle
    3. Menu > Format > Make Editable > click on the bottom red dot > delete
    4. Click on the left side dot, there are two handles which pull out the curves.
    5. Drag down a guide from the ruler to the tip of the top of the handle.
    6. Click on the bottom handle tip and shift drag it up until it is tucked back into the red dot.
    7. Do the same to other corner.
Now keep a copy of this in a document and copy paste where you need it.

  • Does iPhone 5 sim card size and shape are changed?

About the sim card size and shape, there are some web sites talk about new micro - nano.....what ever sim cards for the new iPhone 5, I searched the details in the official Appel site there was no any topics about this issue, now I want the truth form any one knows it, is the sim card changed? or it is the same as for iPhone 4 and 4s?

Yes sim card size is changed, iPhone 5, 5c and 5s supports a nano sim which is slightly shorter than micro sim which is used in iPhone 4 and 4s so you have to trim your sim or you can get a new one

  • Shapes are "paralyzed", cannot be modified

I want to modify a shape or create a new one with the help of the menu "shape" ( "Form" in my German Language ) It is possible to alter the size of a marked shape but only in regard to proportion. If I apply the option of editing, those little red dots appear as they are supposed to. But: they remain sort of paralyzed, they do not modify the shape, unable to pull or draw with them. The very same process is possible in keynote. But if I create a shape in Keynote and copy it into Pages: it keeps fixed. After hours and hours of trying to solve that puzzle I realized it has to do with a button in the menu bar, in German: "eingebettet"/"fixiert" I dont know the English translation for it, therefor I attach the screenshot. Each time I mark the shape in order to edit it, that button shifts to "fixieren" and cannot be released!

Yes, I wonder if my application Pages '08 is "bugged". For the process of activating successfully the red dots runs perfect in Keynote!
Your suggestions to solve the problem remains enigmatic for me: this is "higher" understanding of computer language. So, let me try to translate into my language:
"from another account" do you mean: from another Mac? I have only one account -which is myself- on my Mac.
I apologize but I can't guess which is your level of knowledge.
    Click on the Desktop.
    You will enter the Finder.
    Click the menu entitled "Help"'
    Search for the keyword Account
You will get explanations about the way to create an other user account on your machine.
Trying to run the application from such an other user account is the unique way allowing you/us to know if the problem is in your account (in such case the culprit is not the app itself) or if it is a global problem (in tis case and only in this one, the problem *_may be_* the app but it would not be sure that it is).
As second step you suggest deleting(?) the file. Yet you give an example referring to Keynote, not to Pages?
    "<startupVolume>:Users:<yourUserAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Key note.plist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourUserAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Keyn ote.LSSharedFileList.plist"
    Is this an error?
Yes, I was fooled by the presence of the two applications names in your messages.
    "<startupVolume>:Users:<yourUserAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Pag es.plist
    <startupVolume>:Users:<yourUserAccount>:Library:Preferences:com.apple.iWork.Page s.LSSharedFileList.plist"

  • Org Chart Shapes are no longer recognized as org chart shapes by Visio 2013

I created an org chart in Visio 2013 by importing data from Excel.  It generated the org chart properly.  I then began cleaning up (i.e. Best Fit to Page, changing layouts on pages, changing size & spacing) as need to be visually more
appealing.  After cleaning up many pages, Visio no longer recognized the shapes on the page as org chart shapes.  This now causes the 'Best Fit to Page' feature to display a msg stating "Add organization chart shapes to your drawing, and
try again."  It also causes the 'position' (employee) shapes under a 'manager' shape to no longer move with the manager shape when the manager is repositioned.  This is now true for all shapes on all pages in my org chart.  Can the
shapes be fixed to go back to being recognized as org chart shapes?

    Hi,
If you want to show the pictures in the Organization chart, we need to add the photo the display

Create a new Organization chart> Organization Chart Wizard choose information that's already stored in a file or database> Choose A microsft Exchange Server directory> Select Photo and add to display fields> Choose the information which you want

  • Shapes are already on Ai CC Library but can't drag them to the canvas, why?

I created some images on Adobe Shape and saved them for Illustrator CC; I can see them on the Ai Library but can't drag them to the canvas. If I double-click on one thumbnail this message appears: This item isn’t directly editable in Illustrator, but it can be placed in a document. To place the item, drag it into an open document.
    - I thought that it CAN be editable in Ai.
    - Drag doesn't happen.
Can you please tell me what to do?
    Thanks.

  • Undo Pathfinder - 'Unite (Alt-click to create a Compound Path and Add to Shape Area)

    Hey,
I am new to Illustrator and I am trying to 'release' a compound path, back into the original objects. (A body shape, including the torso, arms and legs). I can't seem to get it to work. There is no option in the Pathfinder tab as a lot of sources say, and I cannot go to Object>Paths>Release as no option exists at all. I am using CS5.
If you need more information please ask. Can anyone help?
    Fleur

Here you go. See the white version, I want the body to go back to being like that. To get to the selected shape I clicked the 'Unite...bla bla' button and it combined them all.
(By the way, I am following a tutorial - they do not really specify the steps very clearly...obviously).

  • Shapes are always transparent when previewing

    Hi all.
I've just started using captivate and am already encountering a very frustrating problem. I have a photo background and a solid white square at 100% opacity on top. Simple right? Yet when I preview my project its as if the shape is 90% opacity. Same thing if I publish.
I've tried creating a new file from scratch and every single time, no matter what the fill colour is, its transparent when it shouldn't be. I'm losing my mind, please help.

    Default caption style.
It doesnt seem to be anything related to text. If I draw another shape like the one in this screenshot (also set to 100% transparency) it will appear to be 90-95% when I preview.

  • Getting rid of black fringe when using anti-alised alpha channel

I want to take images rendered in Lightwave 9.3 into Photoshop CS2 for compositing. If:
    1. I render objects with antialiased edges over a black background, and then
    2. save out the alpha channel for use as a layer mask in Photoshop
I get a black fringe around the objects resulting from the semitransparent pixels of the antialiased edges revealing the black background in the base image.
How should I avoid this problem to get clean antialiased edges?
    Thanks.

One of the few uses of the Image>Adjust>Brightness/Contrast is choking or spreading Alpha channels. Go to the channels palette and play around with the Alpha to see what happens. Bear in mind that you may want to load the channel as a selection (or not), invert the selection (or not), Modify the selection to expand or contract... (or not), etc, etc.
The point of all the "or nots" is that there is more than one way to attack this. Your willingness to experiment will determine whether you succeed (or not).

  • How do I export from PDF to PPT so that shapes created in Illustrator are editable

How do I export from PDF to PPT so that shapes created in Illustrator are editable, not just text on top of them? I used the Acrobat XL Pro technique described here (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/pdf-to-powerpoint-pptx-converter.html), to export a graphic I had created in Illustrator and saved as an Adobe PDF file, but shapes are not editable and are fuzzy too. Is there a way to export a complete Illustrator graphic to PowerPoint?

Thanks Bill. Of course I realize I can insert an Illustrator drawing into a PPT without making it a PDF first. What I’m trying to do is insert a drawing from Illustrator that is still editable in PPT (a client request). Using the Acrobat XL Pro capability shown in this video <http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/pdf-to-powerpoint-pptx-converter.html> , only the text is editable in PPT, not shapes created in Illustrator.
