Share a .webloc file with Windows 7 via Dropbox

I like to simply drag a favicon of a website to the desktop to revisit this page later or to collect relevant sites while doing some research. I have created a folder structure for that on my Mac and put all this into my Dropbox to share it with a Windows 7 PC - assuming this would work like it does on my Mac.
I just realized that the PC can't open these files like my Mac does, by simply double-clicking them. It opens empty tabs in Firefox and/or Safari on the PC. When I open the file in notepad I see the actual URL is still inside the file, but it is not convenient to open each of these files in Notepad first, copy the URL and paste it into a browser.
Is there a better solution to share URLs (not all my Bookmarks) with a PC via Dropbox?

Found a solution:
This script allows for processing .webloc files in folders: http://www.macosxhints.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=106220

    If you mean just moving files between a Mac and a PC with XP on it, get a USB flash drive, format it FAT32 (they usually come that way) and copy the files to that drive.

  • How can you share only specific folders with windows

    I took the following steps to share my macbookpro files with my desktop windows XP sp3. I am using a router to connect these two computers.
    1)system preferences > sharing > file sharing > options > CHECK BOX "share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" >check box 'on' my one of the 2 accounts on macbookpro> hit ''Done'' > GREEN red dot next to "Windows Sharing: on"
    2) I then added 3 FOLDERS to the "shared folders:" list on 'system preferences > sharing > file sharing'
    3) system preferences > network > Location >"automatic" in the drop down menu > hit edit location and create a new location with the default name "Automatic Copy" Go to Advanced> WINS > change work group to "MSHOME" (this is the name of work group on my desktop windows pc)
    4) system preferences > accounts > other accounts> guest accounts: check the blue box " Allow guests to connect to shared folders"
    5) go to my network places on xp. > click add a network place>Next>choose another network location>Next>Browse>entire network>Microsoft windows nework>Mshome>Macbookpro>clicked on the folder ”my account from my step #1 "
    Now ALL files on this account on my macbook are shared with my desktop.
    THIS IS INTERESTING AS IN STEP 1, I Had given permission to share ONLY 3 FOLDERS and I do not want to share every single macbook folder from my account with this desktop.
    Please help. I have been unable to fix it. I am very new to mac world.

    You'll have to open another iCloud account - you can't share access to just part of the email account.
    Go to http://appleid.apple.com and create a new ID - you will need a different non-Apple email address to do this.
    Sign in with it in System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars and enable 'Mail' in the checklist there. You should be asked to create a new @icloud.com address.
    This account will then appear alongside your present one in Mail. Your lawyer can access it in the usual way - if he doesn't have a Mac he can set the account up manually using the server settings here:

  • Sharing with Windows via BootCamp

    I hope this belongs in this forum and not BootCamp. I just got a MBP and am planning to install Windows to allow me access to my version of PhotoShop and some Windows only presentation software I use (Media Shout and EasyWorship) Anyway, is there a way for me to use iPhotos' great organizational features, but put the images on an external HD that I can also access via Windows? I believe i would need to create folders (nature, family, etc.) in order to have any sort of organization while in Windows. Any thoughts on how to share an iPhoto library with Windows?
    Thanks!

    I have a full copy of Photoshop CS2 for windows, will this run sufficently well under either bootcamp / parallels
    It will run fine on both of them.
    It will run better using Bootcamp/Windows.

  • Open .webloc files in Windows

    I was suffering on getting .webloc files open on my Windows PC.
    I found a thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7244343 but it was archived, so I couldn't reply no longer to it, but I noticed that it was never solved. Since I didn't find any solution on how to get this fixed, I decided to develop my own little utility to help this problem out of the world...
    For those who have this issue too, or those who are interested, you can find the small app here: http://www.nostech.be/index.php?m=news&search=webloc

    Google is indeed my friend and yes I did a search before posting...I am looking for a way to OPEN .webloc files, not to convert them to .url files. One page suggested installing Safari for Windows but that does not work either, ironically enough.
    I am going back and forth between Mac and WinXP all day (testing browser compatibilities) and it would be a blessing to my workflow if I could double-click a .webloc file in Windows to open it in SOMETHING.
    The best info I found was here:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg04084.html
    This tells me that prior to 10.4, .webloc files stored the URL in the resource fork which required a converter to .url to get them to work in Windows. In 10.4 and 10.5, the .webloc format stores the URL in the data fork and so it should be trivial to open them correctly. Indeed, Firefox and IE display a "page source" style page that shows the URL. Safari for Win breaks.
    I would think there is a shareware or freeware program somewhere in the universe that would allow me to, at a minimum, associate it with .webloc file extension in Windows, but I am not familiar with it.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Unable to share files with Windows

    I have followed the instructions on my iMac to a "T", but am unable to share files with the wireless laptop on my network. The ethernet-wired pc can see the iMac fine and does not have to use a password to view the shared files. I must be doing something wrong with passwords - can someone please help? Thanks!

    G'day v3ofushere,
    You may need to provide a little more information so that we can assist you!
    What version of Windows are you running on the other machines?  XP, Vista, 7, 8 or 8.1?  EDIT: Scratch that - I just saw that it is a Windows 7 PC from the subject!!! (DOH!).
    Are your Windows computers on a domain, or are they running as a WORKGROUP?
    When you say that you can't connect to the network, does this mean that you are having trouble connecting to file shares?
    What are you seeing when you attempt to connect?  Any error messages?  Or is it simply failing to accept the login credentials and shaking the dialog box at you?
    Cheers,
    Rodney

  • Using iTunes w/ Mac AND Windows via Dropbox

    I'm doing my best to move my life to "the cloud" and the final missing piece is iTunes. I'm currently using iTunes on a Sony Vaio, storing all of my music and video on a 1TB external hard drive.
    I recently got a MacBook Air and want to have access to at least my favorite music from anywhere via Dropbox. Can I copy my music (there's nowhere near enough room for the video) to my Dropbox account and then point the MacBook Air iTunes installation to my Dropbox account?
    It seems that all of the library info is kept in a separate file, so I think this should work--but I would really appreciate it if the experts here can point out any problems, issues, or "gotchas" associated with this plan.
    Of course I want to be able to enjoy my music anywhere, but I'm planning to make the MacBook Air primary at some point in the future so that I can sync my iPod Touch and my iPad to it.

    Wow, first time I've seen this question. You are breaking new ground.
    From the discussion I can see on the Dropbox Forums, there are people using it for iTunes backup, but no success using it as a source for streaming music. Take a look at this thread, for example.
    Somebody else here may know more, but also you may want to post a very specific question on the Dropbox Forum.

  • Can I use icloud to share itunes audio files with others

    Can I use i-cloud as a medium to share audio recordings stored in itunes, to share those recordings with others.
    How does that work if it's possible, is there a unique link provided to the one I am sharing the file with?
    Can I connect this link than to my webpage so people may download a recording as an mp3 file from the website?
    I am currently using dropbox, but want to switch to i-cloud if this service is provided

    Thank you
    Its not to share songs, it is to share teachings I am giving to students and that are recorded, to provide them with a link after class so they can listen or for those on a distance who cannot attend in person.
    Any suggestion as to what is the best option to sharing audio recordings through another medium?I have tried gotomeeting but the conversion of the audio did not work for mac. Looked into livestream but their fees are very high if you wish to protect your offering with a password ( which i have to do, as the students pay for it)
    My best guess is video myself including audio and downloading that into my computer and onto youtube?

  • Uploading a File with AppleScript via JavaScript

    Hi everybody,
    being new to AppleScripting and JavaScripting I'm faced with the following problem:
    Is it possible to make AppleScript to input the path for a file to be uploaded via JavaScript? If yes, what should be the correct Path Format and how to wrap it up the JavaScript action into AppleScript? I've tried a few comands but to no success.
    On the webpage in question, there's a "Choose" button, that is defined as follows:
    <input type="file" class="gwt-FileUpload" name="swfFile">
    I've been trying to use the following syntax:
    do JavaScript "document.getElementsByName('swfFile')[0].value('Macintosh HD:Users:myaccount:Desktop:Scrapbook:!动画.swf')" in document 1
    as well as this one, where the Path is definitelly understood by shellscript:
    do JavaScript "document.getElementsByName('swfFile')[0].value('/Users/myaccount/Desktop/Scrap book/!动画.swf')" in document 1
    The name of the file is (and must remain) in chinese, but for testing purposes I have also tried files with english names, without success.
    Currently I'm using a solution with JavaScript comand:
    do JavaScript "document.getElementsByName('swfFile')[0].click()" in document 1
    to click the finder  window to browse for the file, and manipulating  keystrokes by using System Events to find the right file, but it's not  infallible with a number of files and it's hardly an ellegant sollution.
    Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
    Cheers!

    @twtwtw
    the do JavaScript "document.forms[0].submit()" command didn't work, so I kept the original way of submitting by clicking the button. The submitting part works, but not the input file part.
    That's the code I used
        tell application "Safari"
            do JavaScript "document.getElementById('gwt-uid-13').value='on'" in document 1
            do JavaScript "document.forms[0].elements['swfFile'].value=" & "'" & SWFFilePath & "'" in document 1
            do JavaScript "document.getElementsByClassName('gwt-SubmitButton')[0].click()" in document 1
            delay 1
        end tell
    with SWFFilePath set as the POSIX path as well as the default file format
    Macintosh HD:Users:myaccount:Desktop:Scrapbook:!动画.swf'
    but it did not work.
    If you've got the time, feel free to upload an .swf. The service is free and the server delats uploaded files after 15 min. (if you don't have any, you may try an empty .txt file instead - it won't get converted, but the point is just to get it into the input box).
    In the meantime, I'll have a look at adayzdone's suggestion. It's not perfect (the downside being that it requires the window to be active, so I can't run the script in the background or with my screensaver & password on), but it's still more reliable than my sollution with navigating arrowkeyes.

  • Retrieving Time Machine Files with Windows or Other Mac

    Hi everyone. I'm using a MacBook 4,1 running 10.6.8 and I also have an external hard drive in order to use Time Machine for backup.
    If my MacBook dies then all I'm left with is the aforementioned external drive. However since my files have been backed up via Time Machine – and not the usual copy/paste method – what happens then? Do I need to buy a new Mac or is it possible to retrieve those files with a computer running Windows?
    Please keep in mind that I only have one account – the administrator one – which is password protected, requested at login. In case I can't possibly retrieve them with Windows and I buy a new Mac, will the fact that they are password protected be a problem and prevent me from accessing them?
    I can't possibly try it out myself because I don't have any other Mac or Windows computer/laptop.
    Any insight is more than welcome. Thank you for your time.

    If my current MacBook stops working and I get to buy a new Mac, is it possible to choose individual files (like iTunes libraries only, or pictures folders etc.) from my current Time Machine backup on my external HD and move them to my new Mac, instead of loading my entire backup on to the new one? (including system files and other files that I don't really need).
    Pretty much how one might use Time Machine, where you browse backups by date, find the folders and files that you want and restore them back. You don't restore the entire backup.

    I have a similar problem, which is that I want a Windows user to be able to view my iMovie file using Windows Media Player. I have Flip4Mac on my Mac but isn't that for converting the other way around - for viewing a Windows Media Player file on a Mac?
    Sorry, I see that there is a Studio version that allows conversion to wmv - I only had the free basic version for Flip4Mac - should have looked more closely at the website!

  • Why can't I share a Quicken file with another user on my mac?

    I have a new mac. Used to have a pc  with ms money. it was set so that both my wife and I could open Money and work on the same file (our checkbook).
    I get a "can't open file....no permission" message from Quicken if I try to open from my wife's login.
    I have the file in the Shared folder and I manually went into File Sharing and set her up to read& write on that folder and file but I still get "no permission"
    There has to be a way for 2 people to work on the same file, yes?

    I found the answer on the Quicken Support site. Unbelievable!!!!
    Article ID: GEN82981      Updated: 8/11/2011 |
    Unable to Share a Data File Between Multiple Users on the Same System
    Cause The Quicken Essentials data is a data package that contains multiple files.  Each item in the package has permission set based on the current users profile.  When the Package is moved to a shared folder, the permission in the data package are not changed, therefore cannot be accessed by another user.
    You can change the permissions for each individual file within the data package to be accessed by other users.  However, the first user who opens the file after the permissions have been changed, will take ownership of the data package, and it will no longer be accessible by the other party again.
    SolutionThis issue is currently a product limitation and is expected to be resolved in a future version of Quicken Essentials for Mac.

  • How to upload large file with http via post

    Hi guys,
    Does anybody know how to upload large file (>100 MB) use applet to servlet with http via post method? Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Mark.

    Hi SuckRatE
    Thanks for your reply. Could you give me some client side code to upload a large file. I use URL to connect to server. It throws out of memory exception. The part of client code is below:
    // connect to the servlet
    URL theServlet = new URL(servletLocation);
    URLConnection servletConnection = theServlet.openConnection();
    // inform the connection that we will send output and accept input
    servletConnection.setDoInput(true);
    servletConnection.setDoOutput(true);
    // Don't used a cached version of URL connection.
    servletConnection.setUseCaches (false);
    servletConnection.setDefaultUseCaches(false);
    // Specify the content type that we will send text data
    servletConnection.setRequestProperty("Content-Type",
    +"application/octet-stream");
    // send the user string to the servlet.
    OutputStream outStream = servletConnection.getOutputStream();
    FileInputStream filein = new FileInputStream(largeFile);
    //BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader
    +(servletConnection.getInputStream()));
    //System.out.println("tempCurrent = "+in.readLine());
    byte abyte[] = new byte[2048];
    int cnt = 0;
    while((cnt = filein.read(abyte)) > 0)
    outStream.write(abyte, 0, cnt);
    filein.close();
    outStream.flush();
    outStream.close();

  • Problem sharing file with windows 7

    I am tring to set up pc with the new macbook air.
    I can read/write files in Windows 7 from my macbook air. However, the reverse is giving me a headache.....(seriously)
    In my macbook air, Preference->Network->Advance->Wins , I set the workgroup as WORKGROUP ( my windows 7 workgroup name)
    Under the Wins servers, i've added ip address of my pc. (Tried both ways)
    Also I check two boxes(AFP, SMB) in file sharing.
    set my username to give full permission and none for "Everyone".
    Now here is the problem. In my windows 7 pc, under the network, I can see my macbook appear. When I click, it is giving me a login pop-up. There, I've entered the login name of my macbook air, and password, but it kept giving me an error message that it is not the correct one.
    I have no idea why this happening. The most bazzarre thing is that it sometimes is connected with the same setting. Can anyone please help me?
    This is driving me for 3 days night and day.....
    Any comment/advise will be appreciated.
    thanks

    Here's what I just did and my Windows 7 PC sees all the folders under my Mac user name.
    I didn't touch anything in Network. It was already setup in the WINS tab for WORKGROUP.
    I opened Sharing from System Preferences. Selected File Sharing and after a few seconds, shared folders (user name Public) and users showed up. Windows Sharing is ON. I clicked on Options, checked 'Shared Folders and Files using SMB (Windows)' and checked my user name under Account. It prompted me for my user password. If you look under 'Windows Sharing: On', you'll see this "Windows users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at \\192.168.1.xx." <--- internal IP address of your Mac.
    Then, I went over to my Windows 7 PC and mapped a drive to my MacBook Pro's internal IP address. I was prompted for my userID and password which I filled in with my Mac logged in userID/password. All the folders under my Mac user account appeared and I am able to open them. This may be all you need to do. Map the Mac internal IP to a drive letter in Windows 7.
