Share Cinema Display and peripherals with MBP and PC
I am about to be forced to use a business network connected PC in my office, but I will continue to bring my personal MacBook Pro to work for my personal e-mail, calendar, internet, etc. (it will be connected to a seperate open DSL network). I am thinking about getting an Apple Cinema display and trying to use this one display for both computers. I would like a way to "switch back and forth" between the two systems, all the while using the same mouse, keyboard, printer and Cinema display.
Does anyone have any experience setting up what I am wanting to do?
Also, how does connecting an external display effect a MBP? Can you close the screen on the MBP, turning off the MBP's display but keeping the computer running? I'd like to be able to tuck the MBP out of the way to save deskspace but still be using it via the Cinema display and peripherals...
Thanks so much!

You can use synergy (link: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) to link the mouse and keyboard across the two platforms.
If you want to use only one display, you'll need a KVM switch.
You can run the MBP either with it's own screen open, or shut it and use only the external screen.
Hopefully this helps a little...

  • 27'' LED Cinema Display flickers when powering MBP and dimmed down

The 27'' LED Cinema Display flickers (backlight flickers) in the following situation:
    * The display powers an MacBook Pro (e.g. later 2010).
    * The MacBook Pro is fully charged (i.e. power is not used for charging).
    * The MacBook Pro performs some GPU intense task (moving the mouse over the dock with magnification enabled).
    * The brightness of the display is dimmed down to one of the lower settings (one or two "bars").
The problem disappears if the MBP is powered by an independent charger.
We reproduced the problem with two different MBPs (13'' and 15'') and two different displays.

Same problem here! I bought two brand new 27 inch Cinema Displays, one for work and one for my home office. Both showed the problem. I returned both, go replacement displays and both show the same problem. I am using them with a 13 inch MacBook Air late 2010. I use them with the MacBook's display lid closed and powered by the Cinema Display. The problem only occurs when the display brightness is at 1 to 5 bars. From 6 bars on everything is fine. I also noticed that the flickering is stronger when I USE the computer, i.e. dragging around windows, typing, etc. When I just look at the screen, the flickering occurs more sporadically. The flickering looks like a short switching off of the display light (a few milliseconds).
I just tried the hint suggested in this thread and indeed, when I open the lid and have the MacBook running on batteries (not powered by the Cinema Display), the flickering is gone! So it really seems to be dependent on that.
Please fix it, Apple! This is not acceptable for a premium-quality display! We have already done a good job narrowing down the conditions under which the problem occurs. You should easily be able to reproduce the issue like this:
    - use a MacBook (e.g. new MacBook Air) and turn it on
    - plug in all three cables provided by the 27" Cinema Display (power, DisplayPort, USB)
    - close the lid of the MacBook and re-awake it with an external keyboard so the Cinema Display will be the only display in use
    - wait a few hours for the Cinema Display to become warm (not sure if this is a necessary condition but it could be)
    - then, use the computer under low-light conditions and ensure the brightness is at 5 bars or less
--> You will see the problem.
By the way, the recent Cinema Display firmware update (to address the audio issue) did NOT solve this problem.

Can anybody give my å tips?

  • Original ADC 22" Cinema Display Works w/new MBP, doesn't with older one

I have two MacBook Pros. One is from late 2007. Core 2 Duo, max 3 gigs of RAM, non-unibody. The second is from late 2009. Unibody, max 8 gigs RAM, etc.
I also have two Apple Cinema Displays. One is 22", ADC. The other is 23", also ADC. I have ADC->DVI adaptors for both.
When I plug either of the two MBPs into my 23" display, it works perfectly. Auto-detects, screen flashes and resizes and wiggles a bit and everything just works exactly as expected.
When I plug the newer (2009) MacBook Pro into the 22" display, it also works perfectly.
When I plug the older (2007) MacBook Pro into the 22" display, nothing happens. No flicker, no screen shift, no work. No lines written to the system.log file, no indication that the laptop even notices that it's plugged in.
Here is a list of troubleshooting steps I have tried. (Please don't ask me to try any of these.)
    * As noted above, I tried the 22" display with the newer laptop. Works fine.
    * As noted above, I tried the 23" display with the older laptop. Works fine.
    * Tried plugging the display into the laptop while the laptop was off, then turning it on.
    * Tried plugging the display into the laptop while laptop was asleep, then waking it.
    * Tried plugging the display into the laptop while laptop was awake.
    * Tried pushing the display power button while it was plugged into the laptop.
    * Tried the 'detect displays' button in the System Preferences.
    * Tried zapping the PRAM
    * Tried resetting the power management unit.
    * Tried unplugging/replugging display power while connected to the laptop.
    * Tried swapping the two power (ADC->DVI) adaptors.
(The problem follows the LCD, not the adaptor.) Also, just to add to the mix, I have tried plugging ANOTHER vintage 2007 MacBook Pro into this 22" display, and it also displayed the same symptoms: absolutely did not recognize the display, no matter what I did.
I find this really baffling. Why (HOW?) would the original Apple Cinema Display be incompatible with the 2007 MacBook Pro? Or what defect would make the Cinema Display not work with the 2007 MacBook Pro, but work fine with the 2009 MacBook Pro? The only difference I know of aside from a different video chip is the fact that the newer MBP requires an extra adaptor to get from DVI to the mini display port thingie.

I wonder whether you've solved this problem. I have the same issue with my MBP. The 20" Apple Cinema Display is connected through an ADC/DVI converter to a DVI KVM switchbox. It works fine with my G5 tower, but ever since I installed Leopard, it doesn't work on the MBP (in fact, if I plug it in the computer crashes). It worked fine before. I brought the MBP to the Genius Bar, and it worked fine there connected to a regular DVI monitor.

  • How can I set up Cinema Display as a main screen and leave my macbook pro as a second screen instead?

How can I set up Cinema Display as a main screen and leave my macbook pro as a second screen instead?

I learned that the Dock is positioned at the chosen edge of whatever Display is positioned farthest to that side.  E.g. for the Dock to be positioned on the right side of the Cinema Display (instead of the right side of the MacBook), the Cinema Display must be oriented (by dragging) to the right of the MacBook monitor on the "Arrangement" tab of the Displays Preference Panel.

  • 24" LED Cinema Display not working with Mac Pro

I have a Mac Pro (2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core, model identifier MacPro5,1) purchased in late 2010 and a 24" LED Cinema Display. The Mac Pro has three video ports--a full-sized DVI and two mini DVI. When I plug the Cinema Display into either of the mini DVI ports, I cannot get a picture, although the iSight camera works fine. If I plug another monitor into the full-sized DVI port the computer believes that is the only monitor. The Cinema Display works fine with my MacBook, so there is nothing physically wrong with it.
Is it not possible to use this monitor with a Mac Pro without an adapter, even though the Mac Pro does have mini DVI ports?

Yes you can. In iPhoto create a Album with the photos you want in it. You can drag them from your Events folder. In iTunes with your iPad connected go to Photos by cliking on your iPad. You can then select the album or events you want.

Starting with this, you have errors in your CSS code.

    As  to iPhoto
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
For iMovie support please post in the iMovie forum

ME293 is a good for programming and work with coreldraw and rhino ?

No there is not. You are correct that Verizon will unlock it for international use, but they will not unlock it for domestic use. That is the way the US carriers work. Fortunately, the LTE enabled phones for Verizon are different. They are unlocked at the start on the GSM side, this was a requirement from the FCC for the allocation of additional LTE frequencies for Verizon. Not sure how long this will last, but your only choice is to use Verizon or to obtain a different phone. That 4S will not work with AT&T.

  • Share cinema display between Mac Mini and MacBook Pro

    Hello -
I am keen to get an LED cinema display to use on my new MacBook Pro - but I share my study with my children - so want to give them a MacMini to use.
How easy is it two swap between the MacMini and the MacBook Pro ? I guess there is only one input in the LED cinema display ???
    Thanks in advance.
    Andrew

Interesting - I have the same idea: sharing a 24" cinema display between a Macbook Pro for myself and a Mac mini for my wife.
The only problem I see is that the display doesn't have any Firewire ports. So if I want to use an external harddrive (or a mini-DV camcorder) on both computers when connected to the display, then I'd have to plug that into the computer instead of the display ...

  • Apple cinema display, IP address, Computer Name and Apache

I have been working on getting Apache, php, mySql setup to do a bit of web design and playing with wview (weather station), drupal, wordPress, etc.  Right off the bat, let me make clear that I am not attempting to host sites to the big bad WAN.  LAN only!
The changes to OS X over the last several versions were a definite speed bump but with the help of Neil Gee's youTube video and this forum pointing me to a permissions problem, Apache, mySql, and php are installed.  Browsing localhost, localhost/~myname and a couple of sites I set up using vhosts in ~myname/Sites from the laptop works.  Joy!    Browsing from other computers on the network nothing worked. Half a day googling the problem before I noticed something odd about the IPv4 Address for my Mac.... when I tried switching it to a static IP I got the message that the IP was already in use.
At this point I need to describe my setup... a MBP with Thunderbolt connection to an Apple Cinema display.  The ACD is connected via ethernet and the laptop was connected to the LAN via the Thunderbolt.  The network router is (unfortunately) an HGV-3800 whose radio is turned off.  Wireless in the household is accomplished by a Time Capsule in bridge mode.  Not my preferred setup but after killing off several good days, I capitulated to the recommended AT&T configuration.
A quick browse of devices on the router revealed that the IP being used by my MBP/ACD had an unknown device name while all the other devices in the house had their names... odd.  So I fired up the wireless on the MBP and took another look at the device list... the router listed this new connection with my correct device name.  Even better, when I browsed to http://myComputerName and http://myComputerName/~myname from another computer on the LAN the It Works! and My Site Works! came up perfectly.  However, the sites that i set up in vhosts stubbornly refuse to come up on the other devices.
My interpretation of what is happening with the ethernet connection to the ACD is that this connection is not identified as being to my laptop... it is to the ACD and somehow the laptop is borrowing it... surfing works and I can connect for file sharing to other computers on the LAN (though it is a bit clunky)... the borrowed connection is not up to the task of hosting on the LAN.  My question about this is whether there is a setting I can make which will correct this behaviour and allow the Thunderbolt connection to function as if the ethernet was directly connected to the laptop?
The other more important question is what is needed to make the sites I have in myComputer/~myName/Sites browseable from other devices on the LAN... these same sites that are coming up perfectly when I browse to mySite1.com from the laptop?
I am not really looking for advice to go get Mavericks Server... many different issues with that scenario.

Your router only has a limited about of features to make it "stealthy."
Here are a few things you can try...
    - Access the router's web-based administration @ http://192.168.0.1.
    - Advanced > Virtual Server
-- Virtual Server: Disabled (pg. 25)
    - Advanced > Applications

  • Dual 24" cinema displays - performance difference between 6490M and 6750M?

    Hi,
I am running 2 x 24" Apple Cinema displays and need to choose between the 2.2ghz i7-2635QM and 2.0ghz i7-2720QM MacBook Pro 15" offerings. They come with the 256mg HD 6490M graphics and the 1gb 6750M graphics.
I do a bit of Photoshop CS3 (once a month), rarely any video rendering.
But as I run dual monitors (via a Matrox DualHead2Go DP edition) I am keen to find out if the extra £300 for the higher spec will actually assist my usage.
Its currently running on a MacBook Pro 6,2 2.4ghz early 2010 model. It runs fine on this.
    Thanks
    Eric

Can't help with your question, but wondering what video adapter you are using to connect 2x Cine Display to your MacBook Pro as I'd like to do the same.

  • Create a DAQ program and display results on with waveform and spreadsheet

I need help creating a DAQ program that will read digital and analog channels and display on a continuous waveform, and then display readings on a spreadsheet

You definitely want to start with the example programs. There are many of them which ship with LabVIEW and even more on NI's Example Programs Library (http://www.ni.com/devzone/libraries/default.htm). Also, if you are wanting to use an Excel spreadsheet, I would suggest getting the Report Generation Toolkit for Microsoft Office. It simplifies your coding immensely and will save you a lot of time.
