Share disks over ethernet WAN port

If I turn on "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port", how do I access it from outside my LAN?

On a mac well in the finder press apple key+K type in your home external ip(255.255.255.255)
On a pc windows key +r, type cmd, enter, net use k: \\"external ip(255.255.255.255)"/"the name of share"

No check box for "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port"

I've recently bought an AirPort Extreme and have no problem on connecting to Internet and sharing disks. But my "AirPort Utility" looks different from other people's, and I feel uncomfortable about it.
I saw many users' AirPort Utility screen shots, but all of them have "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" check box under Disks > File Sharing tab. But mine doesn't; at the place where that check box should exist I have "Advertise disks globally using Bonjour" check box, which is usually under "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" check box.
I think this is very unusual. Does anybody have the same problem?

Hi All!
I'm quite new to this Airport Extreme thing. I just set tne box up, and i wanted to share my disks over WAN, but the option "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" is missing. I'm only able to turn on Bonjour
My firmware version is 7.2.1
Can anyone help me with this matter?

Hi Lars,
The reason why you are not able to see the option "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" is because you have set your Airport Extreme up as a "Bridge" (broforbindelse). You must be using the Airport Extreme as your router in order to have this option.

Using DynDNS and Sharing disks over Ethernet WAN port

I am having issues accessing the AirDisk from outside my LAN. So here are the steps that I have taken:
In the AirPort Utility, I enable "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port".
Created a DynDNS account at http://www.dyndns.com so my hostname points to my IP address.
After reading a bunch of threads, mainly this one below, there are a few conflicting issues.

Someone mentioned you have to Setup Port Mapping to open up Personal File Sharing. But another said you don't have to set up Port Mapping. Well if you do, you're gonna run into a problem. Someone said Remote Access only works via AFP not via SMB. Is this true?
Also do I have to enter my DynDNS hostname into the wide area bonour tab in the advanced tab?

Are you aware of any DynDNS-like service that support Wide Area Bonjour?
None at the moment. One might hope that Apple's .Mac service would make use of it, but I don't think Apple has announced anything about that possibility.
Or as a practical matter is this a technology that only appears at the moment in private installations of OS X Server?
I've found the version of dnsextd that ships in Mac OS X 10.4 (not just the server version) to be a bit flaky. One hopes it will work a lot better in Mac OS X 10.5.
But since the AEBS doesn't support DynDNS update, as other routers do, it ends up requiring a server after all.
Wouldn't it be nice if DynDNS and similar services allowed you to configure DNS resource records manually? That way, it wouldn't matter what your home gateway/fileserver was capable of doing— you could just edit your DNS zone accordingly.

Share USB Disks over Ethernet WAN port

What exactly does this option enable? The manual is a little less than clear. If I enable it, how would I access the drive remotely? I have dyndns set up, and the AEBS get's the Internet routable IP.
But what method would I use? HTTP? FTP? What?
I saw one post where it made it sound like this would actually keep dyndns updated with any IP changes, but that seems unlikely with how it is worded and documented.

According to a couple of reviews, sharing over wan is CIFS for Windows and AFP for Mac. I can access the drive remotely using AFP, but not CIFS. I go into "map network drive" and enter the server as follows:
\\domain.dyndns.org\hdname
That works when the machine is on the local network, but if I turn on the VPN, which makes it look like the machine is remote, it fails.
I have the drive shared via wan ethernet enabled, and bonjour turned on.
any ideas?

Allow configuration over ethernet wan port

How are you supposed to do this exactly? For most rotuers the gui is web based so you browse to the WAN IP of the device with a specified port and you can make changes to the device.
However as far as I know there is no web based controls for the Airport Extreme so how are you supposed to administer it remotely.
1. Is there a web based way to do it? (preferred method)
2. How can you do it from the Airport Admin utility?
Any advice on this would be much appreciated!

That is what I am doing, and it is working well.
But when I do so, even if I tell the program to keep information in my keychain, I cannot see anyway to have this information handy. I mean, I have to reenter the same information over and over when I want to configure the base station from away.
How can I save the information so that I just have to click an icon or choose it in a menu?

Share disks over WAN for Windows

I spent a lot of time searching through the forum to find the solution for my problem but I could not seem to find the concrete solution for it. Hence, I'm asking for help.
Problem description:
I can't access my USB drives connected to the Airport Extreme over the WAN from Windows XP. However, it's working fine with my Mac.
My Configuration:
+ Airport Extreme firmware version 7.2
+ 3 USB drives connected to the Airport Extreme via the USB hub
Using the AirPort Utility, I have configured the followings.
+ On the Airport/Base Station tab, I have enabled "Allow configuration over Ethernet WAN port" and "Advertise configuration globally using Bonjour"
+ On the Disks/File Sharing tab, I have enabled "Enable file sharing" with accounts options (and I have created different user accounts). I also enabled "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" and "Advertise disks globally using Bonjour"
+ On the Advanced/Bonjour tab, I have enabled "Use a wide-area hostname"
+ I also registered my dynamic IP address at home with DynDNS
My Observations:
+ At home (this means locally), I can access all the drives from all of my machines including, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac Mini, PowerBook.
+ Outside of home (this means over the (WAN), either at work or at my friend's house, I still can access all the drives from my PowerBook. However, I CANNOT access any of the drives from any Windows machines.
My Understanding:
+ On Mac, it uses AFP protocol for file sharing and this is working fine locally or over the WAN.
+ On PC, it uses CIFS protocol for file sharing and Airport Extreme seems to have issue with this over the WAN.
Help!!!
If anyone has found a working solution and has tried it yourself and you know it works, please post the solution with detail steps. Your help will be highly appriciated. I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one who has this issue.

I don't think this issue has anything to do with static IP address. For most of us in the US, although we have the dynamic IP address from our ISP (I have Comcast in my case), if the modem/router is always on 24/7, the IP address does not get renewed.
Again, although, I have the dynamic IP address, I have the same IP address for many months. I have been using the same IP address to remote desktop back to my server at home when I'm away from home.
I don't see how the static IP address is revelant here in this case unless I'm missing something.
If it works for you, everyone will appreciate you very much if you can post the detail instruction here.

There is no "Share disk over WAN" checkbox

Hello i do have no checkbox for "Share disk over WAN" on my airport settings for TC. What should i do? I just want to access my TC over internet.
this is back to my mac option from settings. It says 'set router' which is doubtful to me.
and here there is no checkox for it.
note: it is 7.6.1

What kind of broadband do you use?
BTMM should work fine with any router that uses upnp or nat-pmp. You do not require an apple router.
If you want to access the TC from internet.. that is possible manually.. in fact it works really well.
You need to set up a dynamic dns account.. almost all routers will have a client.. pick a service for which you have a client.. (unless you have static public IP which is even better).
Then simply port forward AFP protocol TCP port 548 to the TC.. which is in bridge.
Remotely you access by typing in connect to server... AFP://dynamicip or staticpublicIP.
Just google remote access to TC there are plenty of discussions and youtube video of how to do it.

Share disks over WAN setup AEBS 802.11ac

I am trying to share a usb HDD over my home network that I can access outside of my network. I have read some answers in these communities and followed their instructions, but no resolution. I was wanting something like afp://x.x.x.x:port# to get to it. it has been formatted on a MAC with HFS+. My home network sees the HDD but I cant reach it outside the network.

Ok, there are several things wrong here.
1. If the AE is the main router you do not port forward.. you simply tick that hard disk will have wan access.
In the airport utility you tick, share disk over WAN.
Now I don't have the new AC model but I expect it will be the same.
2. The public IP from the ISP is generally dynamic and keeps changing.. unless you pay for a static IP. It is hard to get dyndns working for the AE.. I used to think impossible but Tesserax has been able to do it.
3. Windows cannot access the AE using AFP protocol.. when you tick the share disk with wan.. only AFP protocol is exposed.. because it is reasonably secure.. SMB (windows) protocol is not shared with WAN ever.. it is only shared in LAN.. and most ISP block the ports due to the internet containing several zillion windows computers with sharing turned on and no security.. The entire internet would collapse if they allowed SMB.
AFAIK there is no suitable AFP file access software for windows.. although you might have a solution to that.
Port 548 mentioned is AFP.. not SMB.
Only the Mac can access the AE hard disk.. so using BTMM makes good sense.
4. The only way I would recommend you attempt remote access via windows is using a vpn router.. and put the AE into bridge mode and access directly via vpn to the whole network.. this is a professional solution and is the way any buisness would do it. It is secure and any computer or ipad or iphone with vpn client can access the network.

Share disks over wan option missing

I have a Time Capsule (firmware 7.6.1) I am setting up with the Airport Utility (version 6.1). I am trying to share the internal drive (or even a drive connected through the USB port) externally on the internet so that I can access files remotely. I keep reading about an option to "share disks over WAN" that is supposedly on the "Disks" page of the Airport Utility. The problem is, this option is not present - at least not for me.
The "Disks" page has a list of partitions, a button to "Erase Disk", a checkbox to "Enable file sharing", and a drop-down called "Secure Shared Disks" - that's it for options.
Any ideas why I don't see this option?

Time Capsule 2TB missing "Share Disks over WAN" option

I bought a time capsule about a month ago. Setup was no problem. Have a MobileMe account. Successfully setup remote access using MobileMe. Needed to select "Share Disks Over WAN" under the file sharing tab which is under the disk tab in setup in order to make it work.
Bought another time capsule yesterday and trying to setup in another location. This model does not have that "Share Disks Over WAN" option. Am I missing something? Did Apple make a change? I am not able to access this new drive remotely now, even with my MobileMe account active.

Difference between Share Disks over WAN vs. over Internet using Bonjour?

I would like to find out the Difference between selecting the "Share Disks over WAN" option only vs also selecting the additional "Share disks over Internet using Bonjour" option. Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

you can access drives plugged into your AirPort extreme base station from outside the network by typing in the IP address of the modem/base station in the "Connect to Server" dialogue on the Finders "Go" menu (or press Command+K when in Finder). You can get the base station IP by opening the AirPort Utility from your utilities folder, and click "manual setup" at the very bottom of the summary tab should be the IP address given the base by your modem.
As long as you have "Share Disks over WAN enabled" when you connect using the IP from another location you will be prompted to authenticate to the AirPort Base station and if authentication is successful you will be prompted to mount a disk (the disk plugged into your AirPort base station should be the only available disk to mount).
Keep in mind you must give out the Base Station password unless you allow guest connections to the disk.

I am having this problem with my TC (firmware 7.6.4):
If I tick "Share disks over wan" I can not access the disk from outside my network
If I untick it, then I can access the disk from remote.
It is like it is inverted.
Am I the only one?

Using BTMM there is no need to tick share disk to WAN..
The BTMM is a connection through the NAT to the local LAN of your network. When you tick the share disk to WAN it messes that up.. although I cannot remember that being the case.
Maybe they fiddled around again in 7.6.4 and changed it.
Anyway it is not really an issue.. just set to what works for you.
As you can see the instructions for setting up BTMM do not say anything about sharing the disk over wan.

How to set up your AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Time Capsule for Back to My Mac
Make sure you are on the same local area network as the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, or AirPort Time Capsule that you wish to configure.
For OS X: In the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu, then open AirPort Utility. (You should be using AirPort Utility v6.3 or later).
Select your AirPort base station.
If the AirPort base station you wish to configure is not shown, click "Other AirPort base stations" and select the AirPort base station you wish to configure for use with Back to My Mac. This may require choosing a different Network Interface from the pop-up menu.
Click Edit.
Enter the base station password if prompted (not your iCloud password).
Select the Base Station tab.
Enter your iCloud user name and password in the Back to My Mac section. You should see a green status indicator.
Click Update to save your changes.
You use share a disk with WAN to directly access the TC via AFP. That is alternative method of access.

Nothing is connected to the ethernet WAN port

I have a 5th generation AEBS and FTTH. When I plug it into the wall, it reports that nothing is connected to the ethernet WAN port, but if I plug my MBP into the wall I get an IP address and can hit the Internet just fine.
I called tech support and they said that everything looks great from their end, and that there is nothing that they can do.
What I have found is that if I plug the cable from the wall into a gigabit switch, and then plug the AEBS into the switch, everything works fine!
Any idea what can be going on? TIA!

This is increasingly a problem.. the AEBS is not actually negoiating the speed correctly with the ONT supplied by the ISP.. it happens a lot with cable modems as well.
Using the switch allows the two devices to negoiate speed correctly.
You can do the same thing with old utility..
Install 5.6 utility on your computer. Here is a method.. there are others.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
2. Download and install unpkg.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
Now with a real utility instead of the toyland edition you can do something about the WAN speed.
Set to either 100mbit full duplex .. that would be my first option.. and second is 100mbit half duplex.
Another alternative just popped up.. buy a crossover ethernet cable.

These cables are no longer required with modern equipment but you will find stores still stock them. For some strange reason.. in the one case reported that worked.. this indicates that the TC has some fundamental port issues.. and the mdix is not working correctly which is why the switch or manually setting port speed does.

Won't recognize cable plugged to Ethernet WAN port

I have a new Airport Extreme. I have gone through the setup process and it flashes amber. The cable from my DSL modem is plugged to the Ethernet WAN port but there is no green light at the port and Airport Utility says there is nothing plugged into the WAN port. The DSL cable works fine plugged directly into my Macbook Pro.
