Share files between PC Windows XP and Mac

I'm trying to share files between my mac and my spouse's PC.
I read the instructions at http://macs.about.com/od/macwindows/ss/sharemacfilesxp.htm . The instructions say that the Mac and PC need to be in the same ‘workgroup’ for file sharing to work.
My spouse's work PC does not have a workgroup selection. It only has a domain selection.
How can we share files over our network if no using a 'domain'?
I can enable filesharing from mac to mac but not from mac to pc.

Welcome to discussions
I've tried to connect MAc/OS9 with Windows XP(home)-didn't work.
I've used DAVE from thursby.com(three weeks free trial)- works
fine bought it on wednesday.

    I want to share files between my MacBook Pro and G5, I am using an AirPort Extreme Base Station. I can see the MacBook Pro on the G5 and vice versa, I have file sharing turned on both, as well as Screen Sharing. I currently am sharing using Target Disk Mode, I want to know what other wireless options are available to me?
    I want to have the 2 computers able to see each other and be able to share files be drag and dropping, I also have another G4 on using Tiger I want to be a part of this happy Apple sharing family. Can someone please tell me how to accomplish my goal?
    Thanks in advance for reading and replying to my post,
    Sebastian

    The mac help is: Finder window/Help/Mac Help. It provides answers to a lot of common questions, including file sharing.
    As for the ethernet cable, you can either buy another one (inexpensive and available in many places including Walmart), or just unplug it from your modem temporarily and plug it back in when you're done.
    As for Target disk mode, take a look at this Apple article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
    Apple online support pages are also a great way to find out how to do things.
    As I mentioned, I prefer using the ethernet/file sharing method if I need to copy a lot of files; however, there is another way around if you have an external drive and just want to copy one or two files. Just plug the external into one computer, copy the file onto it, unplug, plug into the other computer and copy.

  • How do I share files between my iPhone 5 and MacBook Pro?

    I need to transfer files between my iPhone 5 and my MacBook Pro. The latter is running Mavericks. I have enabled AirDrop on both devices (I chose "AirDrop for Everyone" on my iPhone), but when I click the AirDrop file in Finder on my Mac, my iPhone doesn't appear.
    Thoughts?

    Sorry; I've got Yosemite installed on my MacBook Pro, not Mavericks anymore.

  • How do I share Pages between my iPad, iPhone, and Mac

    I purchased Pages for my iPhones and iPads, and I set up documents on iCloud.  I uploaded Word documents to iWork from my Mac and have accessed them and modified them using my iPhone and iPad -- all works pretty well.  However, how do I get the updates to my Mac? -- it looks like I have to download them, then re-upload them if I make changes on my Mac.  Can I use Pages (or some other program) on my Mac to implement real-time updating without download/upload?

      However, how do I get the updates to my Mac? -
    Open System Preferences > iCloud
    Make sure Documents & Data is selected
    On your iPad and iPhone. Tap Settings > iCloud
    Make sure Documents & Data is selected.
    Now your documents created with Pages should sync via Wi-Fi on your Mac and iOS devices.

    Not necessary

  • I want to share files with my windows and mac computer.

    I have a Fujitsu Life book and I want to manage files between it and my mac, but using leopards new sharing feature It recognizes the computer but when it try's to connect doesn't work or it says that "the source can't connect check if its turned off (which it isn't)". I enabled sharing in my mac but does that include windows machines? and do I have to do enable anything on the pc to connect? also on the laptop when I enter my macs afp address it goes to google.

    whenever i want to share files between my windows machine and my PB running Leopard , i go into sharing and enable file sharing . Then i turn off afp ( and samba ) and enable ftp . then from windows i'll fire up an ftp client and browse to the drop box and move what ever i want to move back and forth . it works really good for me . But this is all done on my home network , not across the internet .

  • Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system?

    Does anyone know if there is a way to share files between Mavericks and Mac OS 9.1 operating system? When I try to connect from my iMac I get a window that says "The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported." Is there a work-around to this problem or is it just not possible? It would be largly appriciated for a solutin beings my business is a small town newspaper, and we have some important files on the older computer that need to be acessed daily.

    Actually to share files between OS 8-9 and OS X, all versions, is quite easy from what I read. Look here for some details.
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20003464-263.html
    And here.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9.x&oq=file+sharing+Mac+OS+9 .x&aqs=chrome..69i57.20706j0j1&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
    Or since both OS 9 and OS X can do SMB Windows sharing you could use that protocol to share files from one to the other.
    Doesn't really matter what OS you are using. Mac OS/OS X shar files with Windows computers of all types and versions of Windows so the same applies for the different versions of Mac OS/OS X.
    Each Operating System takes care of reading and writing files to there respective file formats of the hard drives so that does not have to be the same. They both just have to be able to do Ethernet with the same files sharing protocol.

  • How do I share files between users on the same machine?

    I tried using /Users/shared to share files between myself (Admin user) and another user on the machine (Standard user). Whenever I put a file or a folder into said directory permissions are 755 for directories and 644 for files, my umask is 0022. The files and directories belong to my user and the group staff. This means I can read and write and others can read. If I do the same using the other users account. Permissions are 700 and 600 respectively. (Owner is the other user and group is staff.) Strangely the other users umask is 0022, too.
    The result is, that all directories and files I create with my account (Admin user) are readable to every other user on the machine, whereas all directories and files the other user (Standard user) creates are not readable for anyone else. I can easily rectify this using the Terminal and chmod and/or chown, but it is a pain having to do this, since I also need to forcefully restart the Finder App for it to notice the changed permissions.
    Ideally I'd like all directories in /Users/Shared to have permissions 777 and all files 666 no matter which user created, copied or moved them to said location. I think this could possibly be done using applescript and shellscripting and the folder action hook. So far my attempts to find such a script on the net or/and write it myself have failed. I'd be grateful for any hints how I:
    a) write and setup such a script
    b) accomplish what I try to do (share files and folders on the same machine) in another possibly more Mac way
    Kind regards
    David

    The following AppleScript will recursively descend the directory tree and change the items to your modes:
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px; height: 340px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #FFDDFF;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving these_items
    repeat with some_item in these_items
    ProcessStuff from some_item
    end repeat
    end adding folder items to
    to ProcessStuff from SomeItem
    processes items contained in SomeItem, recursively descending the directory tree
    parameters - SomeItem [mixed]: an item containing the items to process
    returns nothing
    set SomeItem to SomeItem as text
    set FileInfo to (info for SomeItem as alias)
    if (folder of FileInfo) and not (package folder of FileInfo) then -- a folder (not a package)
    do shell script "chmod 666 " & quoted form of POSIX path of SomeItem
    -- do shell script "chown root:staff " & quoted form of POSIX path of SomeItem user name "me" password "mypassword" with administrator privileges
    try -- to get items in the folder
    tell application "Finder" to set SubFolder to (items of folder SomeItem)
    on error
    return {}
    end try
    repeat with SubItem in SubFolder -- process the sub items
    ProcessStuff from SubItem
    end repeat
    else -- a file
    do shell script "chmod 777 " & quoted form of POSIX path of SomeItem
    -- do shell script "chown root:staff " & quoted form of POSIX path of SomeItem user name "me" password "mypassword" with administrator privileges
    end if
    return
    end ProcessStuff
    </pre>
    You shouldn't need to change the ownership, so I commented out the chown shell script since this would need to be run as a super user. You can run a shell script with administrator privileges, but in order to be used by a standard user you will need to provide the appropriate user name and password in the script, which might not be a good idea - note that the folder action script will need to be attached in all accounts that you want to change the permissions, which means that it would need to be accessible to those accounts.

  • Sharing files between a Windows Vista Business edition and a Mac osx 10.6.6

    Is there reliable information somewhere about how to share files from a Windows Vista business edition pc to a Mac osx 10.6.6?  I have googled instructions and followed the steps and still could not have sharing to happen between the Vista pc and the Mac.  These are the steps I have performed, I have made sure that
    o Both the Vista pc and the Mac have the same user account/password.
    o The firewall from the Vista side allows file and printer sharing in the exceptions.
    o Enabled sharing with a few directories on the Vista pc.
    o Changed the security policy on the Vista pc to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated".
    o On the Mac System Preferences > Sharing selected File sharing.
    On the Windows Vista pc, if I click the Start menu and then Network, the Mac does not appear.  On the Mac, from the Finder menu if I click Go > Connect to server and request a connection to the IP address of that Vista pc, I get an error, "Connection Failed"  (could not find pc or not available at this time).
    What else do I need?

    That was a great tutorial / walk through.
    In fact, I would say that was far easier than the entrophy route (which is good) as you can see exactly what you are doing rather than relying on an installer which has often failed in the past for me, and then just suddenly worked for no apparent reason!
    Just two things to improve it for other users, and they are really VERY minor... From previous experience, I knew where to find the php.ini.default file, but you don't let people know where to find that, and the links to the MySQL downloads were broken. I guess that is because the file names have changed or because I am coming at it from a different country. I got a message stating: 'That file does not exist on our download mirrors.'
    Thanks for doing that, I really appreciate you (and the likes of David Powers) taking the time to set these tutorials up for others to use.

    I have been trying to share file between my Mac Book Air and PC Laptop.Sometimes my Mac sees the PC and tries to connect but every time the connection fails. It says server may not exisit or network problem. I have apparently no network problem. Thanks for any help you may provide

    hi,
    somewhere on the windows machineshould be something like "network setup wizard". exactly where it is and what it is called i cannot remember off the top of my head, windows help is actually slightly useful here, it should have a link to it.
    all the options checked on the mac are only what services the mac is offering to other machines, they have nothing to do with the services it can access (mostly...).
    oh yeah, to actually connect to the pc after you have turned its sharing on, use the finder, or, when it does not show the pc (this happens on and off, possibly a refresh problem apple...) choose go --> connect to server and enter smb://<pc's name or ip>
    to find the ip, the easiest way i think is
    start --> run --> cmd ->> ipconfig

  • How to share files between pc and mac via external hard drive

    how can i share my files(mp3,mp4,documents) from my harddisk with mac. i am a new mac user and i have a harddisk of NTFS format(as i was a pc user).I learned that mac supports FAT32 format and therefore i can't write data on my external hard drive.
    but, reading a section of OSX yosemite(under compatibility) it is said that now we can easily share files between pc and mac.
    So please suggest me easier way that how can i share files between macs and pc as my friends uses pc and in future i really want to share my data with them without any hustle and i dont wanna loose my data in future

    You can format the HDD to a common one like ExFAT or Fat32 but a reformat will delete all data off of the HDD.
    Your other option is to use a third party software such as Paragon or Tuxera that will allow you to write to a NFTS formatted HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Is it possible to share assets between a windows and a mac AIR app build with captive runtime on one dvd-rom?

    Hi there,
    I have a question about burning two builds of an AIR desktop app with captive runtime, one for Windows and one for Mac, on a single hybrid DVD-rom that can be played on both Windows computers and Macs.
    I've tried sharing the assets (video's and pdf's mostly) between the two builds, but I can't seem to get it to work. The only way I have been able to work around this, is to have the assets in both builds, which results in the double the amount of space on the DVD-Rom.
    Is there a way to have the two builds use a single location to find the files? Or do I need to have two builds that both contain all the assets?
    Thanks in advance!
    Kinds regards,
    Maarten

    Gotcha!!
    I am done with mounting a secondary HDD (thanks to ifixit) and installing Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on it without a worry. Charm, charm!!
    Boot Camp 5 guide prescribes all needed steps and when read and used correctly, installation must be an easy task. And all the existing apple hardwares work so good in the Windows environment too.
    I am going to help out a friend of mine in doing a similar thing on his mac too. If you got specific questions, please do shoot up here and i should be able to get a reply to it (if at all).
    Thanks everyone.

  • Can't share files between 10.6 and 10.4 macs

    When I try to  copy a file from my MacBookPro running 10.6.8 to my pb-g4 running 10.4.11 first I get a request for my password, next I get an alert saying, "A newer  item named xxxx already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the one you're moving?" When this alert shows up, yes, the title of the file with size zero KB has newly appeared on the 10.4 mac. I click replace and get an alert that says, "The operation can't be completed because an item with the “” already exists." But the file didn't exist in that location before trying to copy.  How do I fix this other than using sneakernet technology.
    The reason I  need to do this is that I want to print on a networked Kyocera Mita CS2050 printer.  There appears to be no driver for the printer compatible with OS 10.6. If I use a generic driver, I have no access to printer features like two sided printing.

    I know the 10.4 driver won't work in Snow  Leopard. That's why I'm trying to transfer files to my old Powerbook from which  I can  print.  The Kyocera Mita Copystar 2550 is a laser printer/copier, so as far as I know, GutenPrint won't work with it. I downloaded new drivers from Kyocera Mita, but I  can't get Snow Leopard to work with it.
    The Copystar is connected via ethernet. It works fine from other 10.4 macs.
    The ironic thing is that I also have an older hp color Laserjet 3550 (usb). About 5 years ago it stopped working on  10.4 and if I  wanted to print anything, I had to restart my powerbook in 10.5 or print through my daughter's computer.  When I got my MacBookPro 10.6, the hp works fine.
    But the more serious problem is that I need to be able to share files between these computers. I have no problem copying files to another 10.4 mac on the network, just to the  powerbook.

  • How do I share files between two Macs on my wireless network?

    I have an iMac G4 and an ibook G3 on a wireless network. I have "file sharing" activated on both computers. (Also Appletalk, which may or may not be a misguided move, but I got the idea from OSX "Help.")
    When I try to get from either computer onto the other, my computer is recognized by name (another alternative is to log on as a "guest"). I'm prompted for a password. None of the passwords I use works. I've tried the administrative passwords for both computers.
    How do I get beyond this hurdle to share files? I've posted elsewhere to no avail. This must be an easy one. How do you share files between two macs on one network?

    Do your accounts on the machines have the same short name? It's an issue I've seen a few names.. one machine with bsmith, the other with bobsmith, but the long names for both being "Bob Smith". The login windows would confuse users because it showed their names, but because the short names didn't match, it wouldn't work.
    The password you should use is the administrative one, so I don't know why you're not having luck.
