Share files & external HD between iMac and Macbook (wirelessly)?

I just bought a new iMac Bad-A computer to add to my rapidly growing arsenal of apple products.  I'm having a little trouble figuring out how to share an external HD.
Here's how I have it set up:
iMac in office is connected directly to external HD via firewire.
Airport Extreme is my wireless router in the living room
Macbook is obviously mobile and makes its way to different rooms in the house
Here's what I'd like to accomplish:
Direct file sharing between the iMac to Macbook.  I'd like to be able to access files from any location on either computer from the other one.  I'd also like the external HD to show up on both the iMac and the Macbook.
Both computers are running the latest version of OS X
Thanks!

Then turn on file sharing in System Preferences on the iMac and the MB will be able to access the drive.
I have a HD connected to an Airport Extreme (APEx) and I have file sharing on my MB (administrator's MacBook) This is what I see in the Finder on my iMac

How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.  The folders are using Microsoft programmes as this is compatiable with 90% of my colleagues, therefore I can't use the Icloud service.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • File sharing is not working between iMac and MacBook

I had been sharing files between my iMac and MacBook.  My settings haven't changed and all of the sudden my shared files aren' t showing up in the sidebar.  Firewall settings show to allow file sharing.

I had much the same problem except that it was a PB running 10.4.11 to a G4 running same.
    Check this article - http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070226213016446
The PB could connect to an iMac with no problem and the G4 could connect to the PB and iMac and vice versa.
Turns out that com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist had been deleted from the G4 Root Library at some point. Copied it from the user preference file and everything now works again.

  • IPhoto not working after trying to share iPhoto between iMac and MacBook Pro

I tried to share my photos on both my iMac and MacBook pro. It deleted all my photos in my MacBook and now it won't let me even open iPhoto in my iMac and gives me the following message "You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
How do I rectify this? Purchase iPhoto from the App store?

What version of iPhoto do you have on each system?
It sound like you propbably have a newer version of iPhoto on the MBP - and thay you opened the iMac iPhoto library using the newer iPhoto - if you did you were warned that doing this would convert the library and that the older version of iPhoto could no longer open the library - the error message you list says that this is what you did
If you did the only options are to restore your iMac backup from before you converted the library, upgrade iPhoto on the iMac the same version you have on your MBP purchasing from the App store or use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to downgrade your library

  • Connection failures between iMac and Macbook Pro

I'm experiencing frequent connection failures over my wi-fi network between my iMac and Macbook Pro on an otherwise strong, stable network. I can connect both of my computers to the Airport Time Capsule that I use as my wireless router without a problem, but for some reason I get connection failures between the computers say, 50% of the time. Sometimes it works fine, others it just hangs before giving me an error message. Any suggestions?
    OS 10.9.3 on both machines
    Apple Airport Extreme Time Capsule
    iMac, 3.06GHz i3 (2010)
Macbook Pro Retina, 2.4 GHz i7 (1st Gen)

    Hi jt in nyc,
    Some checks:
Use Airport Utility on one of the machines
    - Click on the Time Capsule ( enter password if prompted )
    - Click on the Edit button
Under Airport Utility -> Wireless -> Wireless Options
Are the Time Capsule Wireless options set correctly?
    - Country -> you know this, change if it is not
    - 2.4GHz and 5GHz Channel set to Automatic
    - Click on Cancel button to return to the Airport Utility graphic diagram.
    - Click on the Time Capsule
    - Click on your machines listed beside wireless clients
Are the machines reporting an excellent quality at different distances from the Time Machine?

  • A problem to sync emails in Mail app between iMac and Macbook Air

    Hello members,
I have had a problem that can't sync emails in Mail app(OSX Mavericks) betwee iMac and Macbook Air. I have iCloud mail account and several Gmail accounts on the mail app.
Is there anyone to help me?

When both are at home on the same network and sharing drives, you can use a variety of tools.  Check the App store for fily syncronization.  Also, OS X includes rsync if you are a UNIX command line person, and there are shareware GUI's for rsync as well (RsyncX was one I remember).  Then there are commercial tools like Chronosync.
Another, albeit to my mind cumbersome way, is to use an airport time capsule and time machine.  You use TM to backup each machine, and use the option in TM to browse another TM backup to restore from (eg. come home from a trip, backup the MacBook Air, then log on to the iMac, browse to the MBA backup volume and restore what you recently worked on from there).
Or get a NAS device for home and use that as a common personal form of dropbox.  The key would be keeping a neat uniform directory structure for the things you need sync'd - like maybe just the Documents folder & subfolders.

  • Sharing between iMac and MacBook Pro

I just got a MacBook Pro. I already have an iMac, and I was curious if there was a way to share info between the two without connecting them via firewire? (For example, sharing my itunes library between the two computers)

This does not work!.  I have a MacBook Pro and iMac and i want my Macbook to be able to add content to my iMac.  I am burining CD's and movies that I own so i can view and listen on AppleTV but When adding content via my Macbook pro (Beacuse it has the CDROM) i want it to be available on the iMac and on the Macbook via my home network.
To get around the issue i have shared the Automaticlly Add to Itunes foler on my iMac so after i burn the files i can copy them over. I just hate doing this step.
    Any Ideas?

  • How do I set permissions between iMac and Macbook Pro using apple extreme base station hooked up to comcast modem

I am trying to share files on my iMac with my wife's macbook Pro for which I am set up as a second user with administration privileges.  I think i have the computers finding each other (for example my iMac shows up on the shared list in my wifes's finder window), but when I try to open a file it says I do not have permission(s).  Is there a manual I can look at that walks me through this step by step.
I know I have to mark files on my iMac to allow for sharing.  How do I designate a particular user as having permission to share.  I only want to be able to share my iMac when I am logged in on my user account on the Macbook Pro (and vise versa, I would like to be able to access the files on the Macbook Pro, when I am logged in as the user on my iMac.
Thank you for your assistance and precious time.

    Through a browser.
I am supposed to have it set so that it is placed at:
    http://c5414.airsight.net  but nothing gets there.
Some places have mention that I need to set up port forwarding,
others have mentioned DDNS or UPNP,
How do I do these or is there a better way to send http://10.0.11.1/main.html
    to http://c5414.airsight.net?

  • Share Files with Bonjour between XP and Leopard?

Can you share files between Mac OS Leopard and XP using Bonjour?
    If so, how?
I have a Linksys router plugged into XP and a built in Airport card on the Mac. I can use the internet but I am having trouble sharing files.
    Any help would be appreciated!

s/pdif seems to be for such situations. You could also try running some networked sound daemon, pulseaudio supposedly runs on windows as well, not sure what support phonon has for networked audio.

  • Can you share an external disk between OSX and Linux?

I am using both Linux and Mac OS X computers at work. I have found a need in some cases for backing up very large files and/or moving them between systems that are not necessarily on a saf network. At least not at the same time.
For this purpose I wanted an external big disk that could be mounted on a Linux system as well as a Mac. To my dismay there seem to be no common modern journalling file system between these two, well dialects of, unix.
I am not going to use and old Windows file system such as FAT32 and the only possibility so far has been Apple's HFS+ with the journal turned off (as Linux does not support writing to a journalled HFS+ file system). Darwin does not support any of the file systems that I regularly use on Linux.
Perhaps I am mistaken - is there really nothing good and useful out there?
    /T

I was under the impression that having a journal would be safer, not just for the boot drive. Any volume that is not properly unmounted before removed (or the couputer is turned off) might be left in an incomplete save state, since data might have been saved to buffers only, not to the disk proper.
To me safer would be better. Apple has added journaling to HFS+ which is good, and there are several journaling file systems for Linux. Nothing in common. Not even with Windows. I guess I will have to use HFS+ with the journal turned off, but it seems suboptimal to me.

  • Printer and Network connection between imac and PC (Wireless)

    Hi All
I Have connected successfully to the internet via my imac through airport as has my pc through a wireless network card. But my problem is sharing files, networking between the two computers, it doesn't want to happen!!
And i am unable to print through the imac, the printer is linked up to the PC via a USB. The imac and PC are both connected to a wireless router/modem.
Would like some advise on these issues. Any suggestions welcome!
    Cheers.

Everything I know about a mixed Mac/PC network, I learned from iFelix and Joel Shoemaker. They both have fabulous sites that go through the process step-by-painful-step.
As far as the printer sharing goes, it took me a while to get it right, but I ended up using both the files found here and got it to work. Of course it was an HP printer, but there are others located here for other brand printers.
Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

  • Moving files between iMac and Macbook Pro results in permissions error

This is probably a very simple issue but I can not for the life of me figure out how to fix it.
I've moved a folder of raw .nef photos to my public folder on my iMac from my Macbook Pro via file sharing. Upon attempting to open the files on my iMac in finder or Adobe Bridge CS5 I get "You do not have permission to open the document..." "Contact your computer or network administrator for assistance".
    Thanks in advance,
    Tony

You'll have to give yourself permission to the files. Do a +Get Info+ via the Finder, click the padlock at the lower right, and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign at the bottom, and select your user account. That will give you Read rights. Click the arrows in front of +Read Only+ and select +Read & Write.+
If they're all in a folder, do this on the folder, then click the "gear" icon and select +Apply to enclosed items.+ That may take a while if there are a lot of files.

  • IPhoto library won't share between iMac and macbook air

I have all the sharing preferences turned on, and the libraries show up in the iPhoto on my macbook air, but I am unable to access them. One library just pinwheels as soon as I click on it, and the other opens and then auto-ejects within 5 seconds of clicking on it.
    Anyone have any ideas?
