Share files in ibook - networking question

Hello, I have a networking question.
I have a brand spakin' new 13' MacBook Pro and an older 14' iBook G4 (with a broken airport wireless card).
My internet is set up so that I have the modem connected to a "wired" ethernet hub, then to an airport express. This way I have wireless for my new MacBook Pro, and I can connect my old iBook to the internet with a ethernet cable.
Herein lies my question: I want to access all my files on my ibook from my MacBook Pro. I've tried the file sharing and etc on system preferences, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I believe its because they are on different networks? (one wireless, one wired?)
Any ideas to make my ibook a simple file server.

Try repairing disk permissions.

Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Also, your profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you might want to run Software Updates (from the Apple Menu , then click Software Updates.

On your Macs, open the Sharing preference pane and enable File Sharing. Now you should be able to see this Mac from other Macs. Repeat this for every Mac that you want to be visible on the network.

Thanks for the link. It is a good starting point. Part of my problem is that I do not understand file sharing protocols on the PC side. The Mac sharing "just works." I keep getting issues with permissions, or, on some days, the PC just does not show up on my finder. Let me take a look at the link and try some things and I will report back.

"The iTunes application could not be opened. An unknown error occurred (13005)."

Thanks for the suggestion. I like this approach as Java is more familiar to me than other languages.
Our DBA is out of touch today, so I could not grant the javauserpriv to my database user. I tried to run the script anyway in the chance that my user had the privs, and it seemed to have hung. I am now combing Oracle's site for more documentation so I can write some tests to see if I can get a basic Java object working. Under what heading would I find this?

hhow do I share the files on my airport time capsule with my Mac mini, iPad, iphone, windows based computers?

Mac Mini can access the Time Capsule under the SHARED heading on the left side panel in the Finder.
The iPad and iPhone will need an App installed like FileBrowser. Stratospherix - FileBrowser - Overview
PCs can access the Time Capsule drive by opening Windows Explorer and typing in the LAN IP address of the Time Capsule. Example....

Itunes 8.1 no longer able to share files across my network

I run 4 computers in the house and have all my video housed in one central point (a pc). Everything ran great until the new Itunes. Now i am unable to access anything on the PC. any advice? The rest of the computers are mac's and seem to be ok. The PC library shows up but when you click on it it just disappears. And just to beat the unhelpful to the punch. Yes I could just go all apple but I need my pc box for some applications. Any advice would be great.

Share files between PC Windows XP and Mac

I'm trying to share files between my mac and my spouse's PC.
I read the instructions at http://macs.about.com/od/macwindows/ss/sharemacfilesxp.htm . The instructions say that the Mac and PC need to be in the same ‘workgroup’ for file sharing to work.
My spouse's work PC does not have a workgroup selection. It only has a domain selection.
How can we share files over our network if no using a 'domain'?
I can enable filesharing from mac to mac but not from mac to pc.

Cant share files between osx and xp

hi i cant share files on my network anymore. i have a late 08 alu.macbook and when i got i had a wifi network and a Win XP machine with a couple of tera disc space and a lot of backup from my old macbook. and every thing work as it should. no problems, no settings needed changing.
but now i want to putt over some new "files" and i cant seem to find either one.
this is what i have tried so far. XP machine has Bonjuor and file sharing and turned firewall off
macbook has SMB file sharing and changed the "settings/network/advanced/wins/workgroup" to MSHOME cause by XP was that. then changed them to workgroup and still nothing.
please help a 7 month old mac user

Use a FAT32 external drive, or install drivers on the Mac which enable it to write to NTFS, or install MacDrive into Windows.
Creating a third partition on a drive with Boot Camp installed may disable Windows.

How do I share files between OS Macs on non-apple wireless network?

We have two iBook G4s, one with 10.4.4, and the other with 10.3.x. When they are connected via hard cable ethernet, they see each other and can share files. But when connected via wireless, they cannot see each other. What do we do?

If they're on the same wireless network, there is no inherent difference between this and a wired network.
If the sharing isn't working then there's something else amiss. Can you describe the network setup in more detail so that someone might be able to spot the issue.

How do I share files between two Macs on my wireless network?

I have an iMac G4 and an ibook G3 on a wireless network. I have "file sharing" activated on both computers. (Also Appletalk, which may or may not be a misguided move, but I got the idea from OSX "Help.")
When I try to get from either computer onto the other, my computer is recognized by name (another alternative is to log on as a "guest"). I'm prompted for a password. None of the passwords I use works. I've tried the administrative passwords for both computers.
How do I get beyond this hurdle to share files? I've posted elsewhere to no avail. This must be an easy one. How do you share files between two macs on one network?

Do your accounts on the machines have the same short name? It's an issue I've seen a few names.. one machine with bsmith, the other with bobsmith, but the long names for both being "Bob Smith". The login windows would confuse users because it showed their names, but because the short names didn't match, it wouldn't work.
The password you should use is the administrative one, so I don't know why you're not having luck.

- In my home I have a closet where all my audio, video and network come together.
- I have two cable modems from Time Warner
- Modem A goes to a WRT320N; 192.168.0.1
-- This router connects all my "heavy" downloads, ie. DirecTV receivers, Netflix, home server w/videos, gaming, etc.
- Modem B goes to a E2000; 192.168.1.1
-- This router connects my everyday use computers so they don't suffer poor speeds from all the traffic on Modem A
My question is, how or can I somehow share files between these two routers without the need for hitting the modems? Obviously I can just push files over the Internet but I am doing it at a much slower speed due to upload restrictions on the modem.

The easiest way would be to assign LAN IP 192.168.1.2 to the WRT320N and disable the DHCP server. Then assign static IP addresses in 192.168.1.* to all devices connected to the WRT at the moment, e.g. 192.168.1.10, 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.2, DNS 192.168.1.2 (or DNS servers of your ISP).
Now you can connect a LAN port of the WRT to a LAN port of the E2000. All DHCP clients get the IP address from the E2000 which will assign the E2000 as gateway, i.e. they use the E2000 for internet. All other devices will have static IP addresses and use the WRT as gateway.

Turn on File Sharing in System Preferences - Sharing, then you should be able to see them in the other Macs' Finder sidebars (under Shared). Click on them, click Connect As, and log in with the user credentials you're sharing from.

Networking 2 computers to share files problem. won't recognize login/pass

i really need help with this.
i now have 2 computers, a powermac G5 and a powerbook G4 connecting to each other with an ethernet cable so i can share files. for some reason when i try to connect as a user instead of guest it won't recognize my login/or password. it was working briefly before.
the only thing i did different was go into my account settings in both computer's preferences and changed the user name and password so they would be the same. they were the same before other than a capital letter but that sometimes affects things so i wanted to make them the exact same. now no matter what i try i cannot login to the network other than as a guest. and i want to be able to access my whole other computer.
this is what it says:
'Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator.'
appletalk is on in the ethernet tab.
file sharing is on.
i've repaired disk permissions.
any help on this asap would be great. thanks
