Share from MBP to Mini

My main computer is my MacBook Pro, which I use at my desk, and take with me to the office or on the road.  So I have my music library on there, and it works fine.
I've set up a Mac Mini in the living room, which I want to attach to speakers so it can be the hub of my home entertainment system.  It will share the music library on my MBP, but there are times when the MBP is powered down or away, and I'd like to duplicate my music library on the Mini.  What's the easiest way to copy the music files from my MBP to the Mini ... and keep them in sync.
(I know I can do iTunes Match and just have everything in the cloud, but until I'm ready to wrap my head around that, I'm looking for a simple, old-fashioned way to just copy all the music from to the other ... and then keep them in sync.)
Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks. That worked for me (different "Full Name" on each computer). I didn't realize the OS was not capable of distinguishing these. Usually user entered info (file names, folder names etc) are symbols for a more complex underlying ID assigned by the OS. Also the distinction between account name and full name were certainly not obvious to me nor was the consequences of changing either of them.
Thanks much for the tip!
Apple - how about a few tweaks to manage this. eg Inform users when creating accounts of the possibility of conflicts and/or pop up a dialog when the conflict arises telling the user there's a conflict (don't have to expose the other name) and/or fix the OS to recognize the same full name on different computers as unique ID's. There's probably more/better ideas but you get the drift.

  • Mapping to XP Printer Share from MBP

I am trying to map to a Canon MF4150 printer. I downloaded and installed the drivers for this printer on the MBP. I added the advanced icon to the printer and fax applet and when I choose this icon, the MBP scans for available printers. The printer is found and the following is displayed:
    Type: Canon MCDCUPS UFR2 Printer
    Device: Another Device
    URL: cntdbmu://
name, location are blank and available to put in my own info
Print using: I can scroll down and select the 4150 driver
The Canon is shared out as "mf4150" for group "everyone" on the XP. I can even print to this printer from a virtual XP within Fusion on the Mac Pro, so I know that the Canon is shared out properly. However, I am unclear on how to map to it from the MBP. I am a first time Mac user, so my terminology may be incorrect. However, I did try variations on the URL such as cntdbmu://[email protected]/mf4100 and cntdbmu://MCDUFR2LPR/mf4100://192.168.100.102, etc. There is not a lot of "google" help out there. I also tried using the Windows icon and just mapping to the IP address of the printer, 192.168.100.102. Is there a document that would provide some explanation? When I print, I did get a couple of different errors, number -50 and number -9???, I can't remember since I am not at my MBP. I also added the MBP to the XP workgroup, WORKGROUP, from the Network applet withing System Preferences. The user, "username", is the only user on the XP and the account automatically logs onto the system, no password is used for this account.

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

  • I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP to Mac Mini. Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Stumped!

I used Migration Assistant to transfer from MBP (Leopard OSX 10.6.8) to Mac Mini (Lion OSX 10.7). Documents cannot be "seen" or "found". Ditto Music , movies, and pictures.Stumped!

System Preferences/Users & Groups shows you the various user accounts you have.
Look at your hard drive in the Finder sidebar. You should see Applications, Library, System, and Users. If you look in Users you will see a Shared folder. From the user Migration Assistant created, find the iTunes folder and drag it to Shared. Log out and log in using your normal user account, go to the same place and copy it to Music in your normal user account. Another option is to leave it in shared so any user can access it. You will have to tell iTunes where to find the music by going to iTunes/Preferences/Advanced.

Both my iPhone 6 Plus and MBP with Yosemite have the same Apple ID, iCloud and Face Time details - account  (and the same Wifi). Yet, when I try to dial from MBP contacts, I get this message, I don't understand why.

Find my friends is designed to locate DIFFERENT Apple ID's.  So if you want to use FMF for this purpose, you would need to create a different apple ID for one of your devices.
OR, you could use the Find My iPhone App.  Which will display ALL of your devices.

  • How can I use screen share of my mac mini?  Problems validating

I recently purchased a mac mini to act as my home media server for audio as my airport express was not playing nicely with my Peachtree DAC.  Anyway, I have set up sharing on the mac mini and can't figure out how to connect from my wife's Macbook, or her iPad.  (I use a PC, so would welcome advice if available on how to connect across platforms as well.)  My goal is to set up the mac mini without a monitor or keyboard connected to it and have it sit with our main stereo.
I am able to connect to the mac mini via my wife's macbook IF I ask for permission and I grant it from the mac mini.  However, I am unable to connect no matter what I try if I try to log in as a registered user.  I have tried to add her as a user to the mac mini, I have tried to log in as a guest, and I have tried to log in with a password but no matter what I try, I get an authentication error when I try to log in as an authorized user.  For more clarity, here is what I have tried:
    1.  Added authorized users on the mac mini.  I created a user name for "jeff", "maureen", and "lastname_maureen" on the mac mini and provided a password for each user.  "jeff" and "maureen" are just created on the mac mini, and "lastname_maureen" is the user name of my wife's computer.  I confirmed the passwords, and still am unable to connect.  I have allowed any user on the network to access screen share, and no matter what I do I get an authentication error.  Again, if I attempt to log in from my wife's computer by asking permission, it works fine but I can't figure out how to set up an account to login.  Please help.  Thanks!

Have you tried connecting one to the HDMI output, and another to the Thunderbolt port (with the appropriate Mini DisplayPort-to-other connection adapter as needed)?

  • How can I print to a brother MFC440N from my iPad mini

I am having trouble trying to print from my iPad mini. I don't know whether my brother MFC440N is AirPrint compatible or not, but if not does anyone know if there is an app I can use to get round this. The printer is connected to the wireless network & is accessible from any of the other laptops used in the house. I don't think my dad wants to buy a new printer if he doesn't have to. Can anyone help please?

It looks as though you need a netgear router to use this and we have a btinternet router so it won't work
The word is that this suggestion will work with any router.
I did not see the brother printer listed.

  • HT1695 How do I print from my ipad mini.

HOw do I easily print from my iPad mini. I do not have a service contract so they won't help me

If you have a printer that is compatible with AirPrint then the iPad and printer just need to be on the same wifi network - the printers that are compatible are listed on this page. For other printers, some manufacturers have their own apps in the app store which support some of the models (e.g. Epson have an iPrint app and HP have an ePrint app), and there are third-party printer apps such as PrintCentral Pro and Print n Share which work with some printers.

  • No Video via HDMI or screen share from MacMini

    Hello,
I've had the following setup for over a year now without any problems:
    MacMini <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR
    Sony Blue-ray <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR <HDMI> Sony 55" TV
Cable Box <HDMI> Denon X2000 AVR
Since I don't have a keyboard or mouse for my mini I've setup "Screen Sharing" so I can login from my MacBook and control it as needed.
Everything was fine until a few days ago, I switched inputs from my Cable box over to the Mini and there was no video. I tried "login in" to my mini via my MacBook and I can't see the desktop, it's just a black box. I can however see the 3TB USB 3.0 drive that i have attached to my mini and have access to all my files.
So to recap my Mini starts up, power light comes on, makes the startup sound but I get no video on my TV or in "Screen Share" from my MacBook. I do however have access to my files on my Mini via my MacBook.
Has anyone had this situation before? I've checked all the HDMI cables by taking the one from my Cable box that is working and plugging it into the Mini to no avail. I've also restarted the mini multiple times.

    I've got a 2011 Mac mini.
Since I don't have a keyboard or mouse for my mini I've setup "Screen Sharing" so I can login from my MacBook and control it as needed.
Same here! I've been using Screen Sharing to use this mac mini since I purchased it in 2011. I've never had a monitor hooked up to it.
A few days ago I connected my 41" Samsung TV to the mac mini using an HDMI cable. Since doing so, I can still connect to the mac mini and browse the mac mini's file system in Finder (Desktop, Applications, Documents, Movies, Music, etc...) but when I click Share Screen... with that mac mini via the Finder (as I've successfully done for years) it just hangs, and eventually I get the message "Connection failed to mac mini... Please make sure that Screen Sharing (in the Sharing section of System Preferences) is enabled on the computer to which you are attempting to connect. Also make sure your network connection is working properly."
So to recap, the only thing at all that's changed on that mac mini was plugging in the HDMI cable to the television. And now I cannot use Share Screen with it.
For what it's worth, I did hard reboot the mac mini and was able to successfully Share Screen. But after going away for most of the day and coming back, now that I try to Share Screen I again get the error message I pasted above.
Any help would be really appreciated. I don't want to have to reboot my mac mini just to Share Screen for a couple hours every time I want to use it.
Edited to add: while I can't Share Screen to that mac mini any more since plugging it in to the tv with the HDMI cable, for what it's worth I can still control iTunes using the Remote app for iOS. I doubt that's too relevant but adding it here just in case.

  • How to broadcast Wifi Signal from MBP when using AT&T mobile card.

I have a Macbook Pro and access the internet via an AT&T wireless modem card (USB Quicksilver). Is there a way to broadcast a Wifi signal so that I can get internet on my new iTouch ?
    Thanks for any help !!
    Cindy

Yah, Seattle: I see what you are talking about: when you try to enable share, the message is "you haven't enabled a port to share", and the only offer is ethernet? I do share my wireless AT&T AirCard. Are you sharing with a PC, or more Macs, on Airport? It took me a while, when I first enabled the share on Airport. From System preferences > Internet and Network > Sharing, there is no joy. First go to Network Preferences: enable Airport; whatever it takes; Network name you self-assign. Now when you go to SysPref > Sharing > and check Internet Sharing, you get another scolding: "You cannot share 'cause no ports; or share from Airport to computes using ..." Go to Network Preferences > Airport > Network Name > Create Network, or if the other computer is up and around, > Join Network. Mine werke,s but it was ugly getting it up to a PC wireless ... I got it almost there and then had to go 128 bit encryption password etc to make the (corporate) PC happy. This is not plug and play ... Keep trying and take notes and post back.

  • HT201084 can you limit what kids can share from your account

With Family Sharing, do my kids still have to ask permission to download an app that I purchase? I would like to limit what each kid can have from my purchased apps. For example, if I buy a game on my mac mini Family Shared iTunes, can I then decide which kids can download it, or do they all automatically get it?

    Hi,
If you meant "Hide so he Can't... " then the answer is no.
Any Screen Sharing lets the Viewing End the same access as you have.
What you can do is set up a Test User Account on your Mac (System Preferences > Accounts)
This in effect give that User all their own Folders in their Home Folder.
You could put Files, docs and other things in the Public Folder of that account, that you want to "Share, from your Account, so that when you Log in as the Test User they can have access to them.
Public Folders are what other Users on a Mac can "See". They can only Look.
Unless you set up Remote Login in System Preferences > Sharing to behave differently it is also all someone logging in from outside your computer can "see" (like Windows can only see Shared folders).
Once you login as another User your regular User Account is inaccessible apart from the Shared (Public folder only by default) folders.
putting things in the Drop Box in the Test account will make copies of them to do so allowing you to keep unaltered originals.
I hope I have said that clearly enough.

  • Streaming from MBP to Samsung TV WITH EXTERNAL SPKRS --AUDIO ISSUE

    Hel
Using the Mini-Display adapater, MINI Displayport TO HDMI ADAPTER, I have been able to stream live car race from MBP directly to my Samsung HD TV.
Streamed picture is wonderful. To get audio from the live stream to come thru the external speakers,  I used an audio cable (3.5mm pin that plugs to the MBP, with the RCA jacks plugged into the component's (the receiver) audio out sockets),  but still I  not yield the desired result.
Yesterday, I purchased an AUVIO® 6-Ft.Optical Audio Toslink™ Cable .  To test this new cable,  I live streamed an ESPN2 program  to the TV--I was pleased that the sound  did come thru the external speakers.    After a few mintues of ESPN2 streaming, I navigated to  YouTube but lost  the sound to the external speakers.  To troubleshoot, I returned to ESPN2 again,   for the live stream (thinking maybe YouTube has an issue).   Unfortuantely,  there was no sound to the external speakers.    Why it had worked properly only moments before and not now?  I turned everything off and started from the beginning.  No luck.
I went thru the MBP tools, settings, preferences, etc.    Is there   a setting I have overlooked?
Any and all help is appreciated
    Sincerely,
    FMW

OK, so I've done a couple things here and both point to the above post about having two devices doing AirPlay at once.
First things first....  I ran the Inssider tool and looked over my network.  My signal seems to always be between 50 and 60.  My router is on Ch 6 which seems to be the best choice.  There's one other network on that channel, but it's a very low signal strength.  The other ends of the spectrum are pretty well covered by other networks.
Does this shed any light on this problem?
Second - I hard wired my MacBook to the router, then screen shared to the Apple TV.  It was up for at least 15 minutes.  At some point, I looked over and it was no longer sharing, but the network *WASN'T* trashed like it normally gets.  So it possibly got dropped for some other reason.
Third - I forgot that I have an Apple Airport Express that I normally use to stream music to a radio in my garage.  However, this device can be used as a router.  So I set it up this way and created a 2nd network.  I only put the Macbook and the Apple TV on it.  I've been streaming continuously for about 35 minutes now with no issues.
So it would seem that there's a firmware issue with this router that won't allow one device to Airplay to another device.  Does anyone else have any other conclusions or suggestions?  Otherwise, looks like I'll be treating myself to some new hardware after Christmas.
Thanks very much for your help!

  • Cannot access Windows 7 share from 10.5.8

I have a PC running Windows 7 Ultimate with a share named "share" secured to my Windows user id. I am able to connect to the share from my Macbook pro (in finder) with my id/password and I can see the share, but when I try to open the folder representing the share I get the message "The operation cannot not be completed because the original item for share cannot be found.
If I go to the PC and disable sharing the folder, and then re-enable sharing the folder I can access the files in the share temporarily. After some period of time (often after the Macbook has gone to sleep) the error returns.

    Hi -
Sorry for not being more clear: I can only have file access from my Mac. I.e. I have no other access to the PC Server than through smb. I have no right to set or reset access rights. But if the rights are set ok for smb://server/main and I cannot open the sub-directory /a though finder, why does it then work if I use
smb://server/main/a ? And so forth? That problem did not occur before upgrading to 10.5.5.
