Share hard drive-airport-xbox 360

hey hey
...not sure if this belongs in this thread but anyway...
i have an airport extreme running my network. connected to this is an xbox 360, connected to this is an external HDD. this HDD has been connected to my mac to transfer files, vids etc to watch on the xbox's media centre.
anyway for me to access that HDD from my mac??
and having the HDD connected to the mac and watching videos on the xbox from that is out of the question...wireless connection+streaming video=lag
cheers guys

I'm marking this as answered simple because there doesn't seem to be a solution. I finally gave up, upgraded my airport extreme to 7.4.2 and backup over a USB hard drive now.

  • Time Machine, Hard Drive, AirPort Extreme, and possible damage?

I plugged in an external HD to my AirPort Extreme (gigabit) base station today and started a Time Machine backup to it. After about 8 hours, I had transferred only 12 gigs of my 46 and ended up stopping it. I realize only the initial backup should take forever, but I am afraid that running the MacBook Pro hard drive constantly for hours could damage it. Are the portable hard drives capable of running for hours on end? What's the risk of damaging it?
I didn't notice any major heat issues with the Penryn MacBook Pro while doing this, but I didn't want the hard drive to break either. Plus, the wireless backup just takes way too long. I can't run an N only network because I have older AirPort expresses (WDS), older G clients in the house, and some iPhones that need to get online. I understand that 802.11g is slower than N, but it's way too slow for wireless backups.

Connecting a USB HDD to an Extreme can be used for Time Machine backups, but it is not officially supported by Apple. You will have to start a new TM backup if you are using the Extreme as TM backups to a NAS (vs. local disks) will backup as a sparsebundle (vs. your current folder format). The same goes for backup to a Time Capsule.

  • External Hard Drive + Airport, possible????

Hi, does anybody tried successfully to conect and external HD to a airport extreme to make wireless backups in a network?
    Is it possible???
My external HD also have different usb and firewire hubs so I can Plug a Printer or a Scanner.
    HELP!
    Thanks

No the USB port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) does NOT connecting a USB hard drive. The USB port is only for a single compatible printer.
You could get a NAS with Ethernet connection.

  • Issues with external hard drive/airport utility with Windows PC

    Okay, here's my situation:
I'm using the Airport Extreme and my network is currently laid out like this:
    1.) Macbook connected wirelessly
2.) Windows XP SP2 PC w/ wired connection (ethernet)
    My problem is this:
Just plugged in a brand new Western Digital hd to the usb port on the back of the Airport Extreme. My Macbook recognized it (had to use the shared disk password) and it works fine.
But my Windows PC won't let me connect to the external hd or recognize it. Even when it asks me for the shared disk password, it tells me failed login or whatever. I installed the software (Bonjour/Airport Utility), but I'm confused on how to let my Windows PC find the hard drive or connect to it...
I setup/configured my Airport Extreme on my Mac... am I suppose to configure my external hd's sharing abilities on my Windows PC using the Airport Utility, also?
And when I open up the Base Station utility on my Windows PC, it continually keeps asking for my Base Station password as it tries to scan its configuration. Is that normal?
    Thanks
PS: if you need more info regarding my problem, I'll be happy to supply it.

I'd say bad power supply (if it has an external power supply).
Two external enclosures have done that to me already (but one is almost certain to do it while the other just started to do it recently), if the HD I have in the enclosure is a bit older (and noisier) I can even hear the HD spin down a little and spin up again, of course that whatever I was doing explodes in the process.
Mind you that the HD is confirmed to be working properly by connecting it inside a desktop pc.
I have couple other power adapters I can try. I got the same enclosure for my dad. I have a brick for a LaCie drive too. (I bought the lacie drive a year ago, but the power supply buzzed loudly. I put in a support request, but ended up returning the drive, and they sent me a new power after that)

  • Share hard drive or folder - NOT on main Hard Drive

I need to share for windows a hard drive that is not my macintosh hard drive (in this case it is a scsi HD).
When I create a user it places the public folder on the macintosh HD and I do not have enough room for the very, very large project that needs to be shared.
How do I create a public folder on a hard driver other than the macintosh?

  • AirPort Extreme does not see printer, hard drive, AirPort Express!

I just got an AirPort Extreme (802.11n), to replace my AirPort Express. I have a Brother 665CW wireless all-in-one printer, which had worked perfectly but now I cannot find it. I have also hooked my USB hard drive into the Extreme. I can see the hard drive in the AirPort Utility, but I don't know how to find it from my iBook. I'd also like to put the Express in another room to use the AirTunes feature. Unfortunately, almost nothing is working!
Here is how it's set up:
    Den:
    AirPort Extreme - hardwired to:
    - DSL modem
    - hard drive (via USB)
    Brother 665CW (wireless)
    Living Room:
    AirPort Express
Advice would be appreciated. I'm usually able to troubleshoot my problems, but documentation on this Extreme is really bad! Thanks!

I had problems adding Airport expresses using Airport Utility. However I found it worked fine if I used the manual set-up option and not the Assist me option.
Reset the airport express then, in manual set-up, set the express to 'join an airport network' add the airport network password and see if that works

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

  • One Time Capsule & Two Airport Express for Range Extension but will my time capsule hard drive be accessible to all the user on network ?

I am planning to buy 2TB time capsule which is [2TB hard drive + Airport Extreme] and two Airport Express to extend the range of my wifi network. we have a large family & because of that we have 1 macbook, 2 laptops , 2 desktops, 4 iphones, 2 ipads, 3 android phones, 2 apple tvs, 2 ps3's. all of these devices are on my Wifi network but some of them are off usually ps3, apple tv and desktops computers r off but still their is alot of traffic. Now i am buying this 2TB time capsule instead of Airport Extreme so that i can save money by getting 2TB hard drive for me only & not the whole family so i want to know if i can keep the hard drive private & at the same time i want to share my internet connection with all of these devices which belongs to my family members, will this be okay ? and they wont be able to access my hard drive ? & will i be able to access my hard drive if i m connected to any of those two airport express & not the main time capsule. indirectly i will be connected to time capsule by using airport expresses in client mode correct me if i am wrong

You can use TC with whatever wireless you currently have.. if it works you should not need to buy a pair of express as well. The best method is to bridge the TC and plug it into the main router.
You can certainly keep it private for your own access only.. simply set a disk password only you know. Easy.
As long as you have a single network, then wherever you connect in the network will be able to access the TC.. but also note file speeds to the TC with multiple wireless hops will be terrible slow.
Also note all security on the TC is an illusion. It is a home device.. press reset and anybody can then access it. You can even get past disk password. If you want security keep the device off the network.. use an external hard disk plugged directly into the computer.

  • Hard Drive Sharing

I was told on the phone with Apple by 4 different people that the AirPort Express would share my USB Hard Drive over the network so that I could use it with time machine.
I couldn't figure out how to do it, so I called Apple. The support agent ran me through a couple of steps to try to get it to work. After it didn't work, he transfered me to a specialist. The specialist told me that you couldn't share hard drives with the AirPort Express.
Are there any was that I can hook up the USB Hard Drive with the AirPort Express?
I am really frustrated that this is not working.
Again, I was told by 4 different people that it would work fine.
    Thanks for your help.

The Extreme supports USB HDDs. The Express does not and never did. You were either misinformed or misheard. How on earth could you have 4 Apple reps tell you the wrong info? Is it possible the words Extreme and Express were interchanged?
Ask them to kindly exchange your Express for the Extreme (it's about double the price, though).

  • Networking with an Xbox 360: Getting the Xbox hard drive on desktop?

Last Xmas my family became the owner of an Xbox 360. The Xbox is successfully hooked into my Airport network for online gaming.
Saved games are stored on the Xbox's hard drive. I'm wondering if anyone has ideas about how I can "backup" the content on the Xbox's hard drive to my Mac's hard drive. I think that would entail "mounting" the Xbox's hard drive in my OS X environment over the Airport network.
I know networking with Windows computers is possible, but the Xbox?
    Thanks for any ideas.

    Thanks for the reply.
I've tried Connect to Server and entered smb:// and the IP of the XBox, but received an error: The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://10.0.1.3" could not be read or written. (Error cose -36)."
So far, no dice. Any other ideas?

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I want to use AirPlay and share an external hard drive, which AirPort should I use?

I am looking into buying an AirPort. I want to be able to share an external hard drive over it and use the AirPlay feature (by plugging in my speakers through an audio jack). It seems that the hard drive feature is only available on the extreme and the AirPlay feature is only available on the express. Are there any ways around this, and does anyone have suggestions on which AirPort to buy to achieve this?

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.
