Share iPod over a network

Hello. Will this work?
I want to plug an iPod in my iBook (which contains zero mp3s) and share it over my schools network. Will this work?
Right now I have my mp3s on my iBook but I want to transfer it to my pc for harddrive space. However, I like sharing my music over the network.
Thanks!

Hey guys,
I'm not sure if anyones going to check this old post again but i've got an iBook that uses my iTunes music library on my PowerMac by mounting it over the network rather than sharing it as i can use it to update my ipod that way. I also have mounted my ipod over the network too, although iTunes doesn't detect it.
I hope this might be of some use to you somehow.
I'm going to go and poke about a bit now and see what i can do. Possibly enable viewing the music folder on the ipod or something but if anyone else knows any tricks that could be used, thanks...
Cheers, SEB

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

  • How do I get iTunes to recognize my iPod over a network?

Ok So I have an Apple Time Capsule which I use as my router and NAS drive. Though I also plug my iPod into the usb port on it. The iPod is recognized on my computer and over the network easily although how can I get iTunes to recognize it and be able to add music and video?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • Can you share a USB hard drive over the network through an Airport Express?

After asking a few individuals at my local Apple Store, I have been consistantly told that I can plug in a usb hard drive into the bottom of my airport express and share it over the network.
However, after making sure my airport express has the latest firmware (6.3) and even donwloading and installing the airport disk utility I still am not having any luck getting my HFS (journaled) usb 2.0 hard drive to be visible on the network.
I have also noticed that when following the instructions on this apple support document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AirportUtility/5.1/en/ap2108.html) that when I get to step 3, the option to click disks is grayed out. I assume this supports my theory that the airport express won't share hard drives, can anyone confirm?
Am I doing something wrong? Or were the reps at my store mistaken and the only hardware that can share a hard drive is the airport extreme not express?
    Thanks

    Thanks for the swift reply.
Continuing my investigation I started to come to the conclusion you just mentioned. I am surprised none of the staff at my store realized this. However, at least I know now.
The basis for me looking to this is... With leopard on the eve of its release, I wanted to get a large network accessible storage solution that would allow my wife's and I's Macbook pros to use time machine on the network drive when we were at home. Since we rarely use our laptops while sitting at a desk connected to an external drive, I figured this would be a great idea and started to look into various NAS solutions.
Surprisingly, most generic (netgear, western digital) network drives require you use proprietary software to connect to them, and are only compatible with windows xp. After seeing the options the airport extreme opens up in terms of network storage I figured it would be the best bet.
Do you have any other suggestions besides getting an airport extreme? I would rather not have to buy a full blown mac that I have to leave on 24/7 to share the drives. Or do you see any possible pitfalls to this idea? Such as, would time machine forget to use the network drive after a while since it wouldn't always be available to it when away from home?

Aperture shared over a network for viewing with Front Row? I can view iPhoto from my laptop or desk top but I cannot find a way to share Aperture over the network.

If tested to work with other MacOs versions, this should be a main FAQ listed on Apple's Support website for Aperture and/Mac OSX.

  • How Can I Share iPod Music Over a LAN ?

I want to share music from an iPod over my LAN.
I've searched the forum, and can't find an answer there.
    Current Situation
I have all my music on a G5 and share it over an Airport network, so I can play it from any computer in the house.
I'm running out of disk space + I need to have iTunes running all the time in the background to serve the music over the network.
    Proposed Solution
I want to use an old iBook as a music server. The iBook doesn't have enough disk space to store all the music, so I want to move all the music from my G5 to an iPod - then connect the iPod to the iBook and serve the music directly from the iPod.
If I store the music on the iPod, I can play it fine on the iBook, using iTunes.
If I enable music sharing on the iBook, the iBook music library can be shared over the network - but this does not include the music in the iPod music library.
How can I share the iPod music directly over the network ?
I can't copy the music from the iPod to the iBook - there's not enough disk space.
I know I can do it by using the iPod in disk mode - and storing the music in an iTunes folder on the iPod. But I also want to use the iPod to play my music in the car - so storing the music in Disk Mode won't help.
I guess I could set up the iBook to refer to an iTunes folder on the iPod using Disk Mode - then sync the iBook with the iPod --- but that just means I'll have 2 copies of the same music on the iPod --- there must be a better way ...

To the best of my knowledge, you can't. iTunes can only share music that's in the main iTunes library, not tracks from an iPod. Your best route will probably be to get an external hard drive for your iBook and put the iTunes library there.

  • I want to share my external hard drive over the network

I found a lot of threads and discussions about this, but no answers.
I have a WD My Book External Hard Drive that I'm looking to share over the network. However, when I add the volume to the "Shared Folders" or even a folder within the volume and the "Users:" are grayed out.
When getting info on the volume, Sharing & Permissions says, "You can read and write"
    Any ideas?

    Hi Keith,
Thanks for your response; however, the first screenshot is through the Sharing settings in the System Preferences.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • Can you share an external hard drive over a network when your Apple Airport Extreme is in bridge mode?

Hello, is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?  I can't use my AE as my main router at the moment but still want to be able to use the hard drive on the network, and the router I am using isn't capable of adding an external hard drive.  I use Windows 7 and the other router is a Netgear.  I have searched the communities and have not come across an answer to this question.  I have tried several configurations within windows to try and see the hard drive but none have worked.  I can see the hard drive when I run Airport utlities, but it cannot be seen on the network.  Thanks to anyone who can help!

I think there is some confusion in this thread..
If you are sharing on a local LAN port forwarding is not required.
is it possible to share an external hard drive over a network when I have my Airport Extreme in bridge mode?
Answer is yes.. no port forwarding, mapping whatever term is used.. is needed. Port mapping is required when you cross over a NAT router.. as long as all the devices are inside a single LAN.. then no port mapping.
I assign to my Airport Extreme, do I do so with the settings of:
    Service: SMB
    Type: TCP
    Server IP: xx.x.x.x
    Port Start: 445
    Port End: 445
This would not work even from WAN.. SMB is blocked by all responsible ISP.. there is simply too many unprotected windows machines out there. If they allowed SMB .. the world would be flooded with hijacked bots. And stolen data like bank accounts. SMB is not a secure protocol.
But this is not necessary on a LAN.
The problem can be Mavericks which does a terrible job presenting network drives.. The usual recommendations are to use AFP or force the connection to CIFS (ie SMB1 not 2).
If you use airport,, then use AFP.
In finder.. Go, Connect to server.
AFP://AEname or AEIPaddress. (replace with the network name of the AE or its actual IP address).
When asked for password.. type public if you did not change it or use whatever password you put.
Store the password in the keychain.

  • Unable to share files over the local network, OS X Lion

About two weeks ago, my coworker and I realized that we were no longer able to share files over the local network. We have not made any changes to our preference settings. We are able to access FileMaker Pro databases files located on another computer in our office via the network, but we are unable to access any other files by trying to login to the computer remotely. We also have internet access. I am able to login to each of our work computers form home, but not from the office. I'm am not sure what has changed, but it is important that we have the ability to share files at work. Can you give me directions on how to fix our problem. Thanks!

I had this problem when I first setup my Mac. One thing I know is that File Sharing in System Preferences doesn't necessarily need to be on, because iTunes does all of the networking itself.
I know that you've checked and checked again on the firewall, but what I did was turn the firewall on. In the list of ALLOW, there should be a line that is labeled iTunes Music Sharing. Check it. It was the magic link, and all of my iTunes libraries on the three computers in the house (two Windows, one my Mac) could "see" each other.
Turning on the firewall might seem strange, but it worked for me.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can i share my DVD burner with my PC over the network

is this possible to set my burner to be a slave for my pc over my network. its the burner that came with my G5

You will need software for the PC that can burn to a Mac burner across the network. While Toast will work Mac to Mac I don't think there is anything that does this PC to Mac.

  • Printing to shared windows printer over wireless network

    Hi,
I just bought my wife a MacBook and recently updated it to Leopard (OS X 10.5). I have a Lexmark X5150 printer connected to a desktop PC running Windows XP. I can share files between the two computers no problem either wirelessly or through an ethernet connection through my router. But, I'm having troubles accessing the shared printer through the Macbook wirelessly. If I connect the printer directly to the Macbook, I can add the printer with appropriate drivers no problem. However, when I try to add the printer as Windows shared printer, the appropriate driver doesn't show up in the drop down list. I can navigate to and find the printer over the network fine, but I just can't find the right driver. I'm a newbie to Mac and was wondering if there is anyway to find the driver using Finder or something similar to determine where it physially resides on the Mac. I know it's there because it is automatically selected when I directly connect the printer to the Macbook and add the printer. Any thoughts??

Couldn't figure things out, so I'll just stick with connecting the printer directly to the macbook.

  • One Answer To Sharing Stubborn/Naff Printers Over A Network

    Dear all,
I posted a previous question concerning sharing a Canon i320 printer and got a swift if disappointing answer. Whilst the answer was entirely correct in that it was a fault with Canon's driver and the lack of a CUPS version, I have found an alternative to giving my perfectly working i320 printer a Viking Funeral which may also answer several other peoples problems. Just as well because it probably wouldn't float anyway.
It may not be news to some but there is an application for OS X called PrintFab - www.printfab.net which seems to provide CUPS drivers for most printers, including the i320. This allows you to share your disappointingly naff printer over a network just like one of those proper printers you should have bought in the first place.
I've just achieved a successful printout using the evaluation version of this software. Sadly there's no such thing as a free lunch. This one costs 49 euros in it's basic form but in these ecologically challenged times, it does allow to continue using your current printer. It is presumably cheaper than Airport Extreme which was suggested as an alternative. It did take a while to print so I'm unsure about performance in that area. I guess with an evaluation version, you can check that yourselves.
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Brie,
I'm not sure exactly what are the 6 steps exactly.... but I did all the check box in ip preferences of both computer.
I found this in the iP help menu
To share your photos on a network:
    1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Share my photos" checkbox, and then choose your entire library or only the albums, slideshows, or books you want to share.
4-Type a name for your shared items in the "Shared name" field, and a password if desired.
The shared name you enter appears in the iPhoto Source list on computers set up to look for shared photos on your network. If you select "Require password," users will need to enter that password before they can see your shared photos.
DONE ( did not use password)
    To look for shared photos:
    1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Look for shared photos" checkbox.
    DONE
Not sure what other step there are to do if any!

  • PLEASE help me to get Leopard to see my HP over the network

Sigh..... I still cannot get this to work. Does anyone know of any way to get my PB G4 with 10.5.1 to see my HP Photosmart C7280 over my network so it will install properly? Oh, and yes, I would like to be able to use the full feature set that I paid for, not just basic print.
Here is my setup: I have the C7280 connected to my wireless router (Zyxel HW660) via ethernet connection and my network accessed by my computers. I have my iMac (running 10.4.11 and 3 XP machines connected and working properly with the C7280 via wireless connection.
Here is what I have done.
    Archive/Install Leopard again today
Uninstalled/reinstalled full HP software for 10.5 from HP site downloaded today.
Entered IP address of printer into Safari and it sees it fine and gives me the status info
pinged the IP address of printer and it responds
Tried to manually add the printer using same IP address and it doesn't find it.
connected the C7280 and my PB via direct ethernet connection and it sees the C7280 fine through a Bonjour connection.
What else can I do? If there was a problem with Leopard and my router, wouldn't it be an all around problem? I can connect to internet, share folders, etc all on the network so don't think that should be a problem. The fact that the C7280 can be "seen" via direct ethernet connection means that it can communicate with the C7280 software and finally, since I can ping it and get status via IP address in Safari means the connection is there.
As soon as I was able to connect to the C7280 via direct ethernet connection, HP told me it was an issue with Apple. HP Mac Architect are you out there?
Can anyone help!! Thanks! PS Sorry, I know post long, but wanted to be as complete as possible.

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I have an HP 2200d Laserjet attached to my SMC 4 port wireless router BUT via the router's USB port. Anyway I couldn't get it to print in Leopard on my G5 whereas my other computers on the network (a B&W with Tiger, an iBook G3 with Panther and an XP PC) saw it and could print to it without any problems. The G5 only experienced problems printing to it once I upgraded to Leopard via archive and install. The original setup in Tiger on the G5 went missing once I upgraded to Leopard so I had to set up the configuration again. Here's what helped me:
    1) Add a new printer in the System Preferences > Print and Fax
    2) Choose IP
    3) Now for me, under Protocol I chose LPD, but you may have to choose IPP or HP Jetdirect
    4) For Address type in your printer's IP address
    5) Queue type in LPT1
    6) Name type in whatever you want to call your printer
    7) Now this next step is what made my printer work under Leopard (in Tiger it was blank): For Location type in LPT1
    8) For Print Using choose "Select a driver to use...", find your driver, install it and Leopard may start printing to it
This worked for me, but my router has a USB port. Checking the other IP set ups, they look similar to the LPD set up. I hope this helps.

  • Setting up a Printer over Wirless Network

I have a MacBook Pro and a Old G4 Mirror Door connected to a Linksys Wirless Router in my home. I only have one phone jack in my house and its in the kitchen.:( So I put an Airport card in the G4 so I could have my computer in my office. I have a hp Deskjet 3650 connected directly to the G4 via USB. What I'm wondering is.. is there a way that I can print to this printer from my MacBook Pro over the network? Or does the printer have to be connected directly to the wirless router?
    Hope someone can help.

You certainly can set up a printer this way. Go to the Print & Fax preference pane in the System Preferences. Click on the Sharing tab, enable "Share these printers with other computers", and make sure that the check box next to your printer is checked.
