Share media and projects?

Hi, I have a question regarding FCP 6, Xsan/Xserver & project sharing. Is it possible? I've read some things that say people used to be able to with FCP 5 but not 6. Permissions issue and all that. I come from several years of working on avid and sharing media and projects not just the media on a avid unity. The company I edit for now has 4 FCP edit bays ver 6.0.1. Out xsan tech people have made it so that all permissions are for read and write. Kept having authentication issues. We're starting a new project soon and have already been bitten by two editors working on the same project but at different times and therefore neither had the most current version. So, I'm wondering is it possible or even advisable on a FCP system to share the projects from the server. Thanks for any help and insight.

FCP does not act like an Avid...you cannot share the actual projects. That is, only one person can open a project at a time. This is due to the file structure. FCP projects are ONE file. Avid's projects consisted of several files...one foe each bin. So it wasn't an issue. There are work arounds and workflows, and I can give you a quick tip. But as for a complete workflow, I sell a DVD that goes a bit in depth on this.
Have a main project that is your footage, and another one that is your cut. The other editors have their own CUTS projects. Store the main project on the SAN, and copy it to your computer to work with. Have your CUTS project on your computer as well, and at night before you leave, back it up to the main SAN. This way, if someone needed access to your cut, they could copy it from the SAN and open it.

Is there a way to compress media and project files into something small

I have a 2TB hard disk where all my FCP files - project files, media files and rendered files are stored.
I am not sure I will reopen those projects but still to be onthe safer side I do not want to delete them
but keep the compresed so that in case I need to open them some later time, I can open the project and do the edits.
So is there a way to compress the files and store that I can reuse in a later stage but still take less space now.

You can delete all the render files, since they can recreated when needed.
And you can also delete the optimized or proxy media, if you have any, for the same reason.
I doubt that you'd get much space back by using compression, since video files are already pretty much compressed.

How to organize media and project?

Hi every one
I have a couple of questions regarding planning & organization of files/folder:
Presently, I have organized as Macintosh>Users>Home>LaCie>Project.
And within the Projects I have logged & captured clips.
When I hit the Project the browser opens where clips are organized.
questions:
1. Is this an efficient way of organizing the Media & its elements? If not, what and how the best way are: Please give me an example
2. How can I bring the Project and its elements & Media file into a folder? In the finder I don't see any folder/files except the User Folder and the Project Icon.
3. If I want to import some of the elements of one project into another project iin the Browser I cannot do it unless I have to import the entire Project with its elements. How can I import elements of different project and even Media file? Thank you for your help. Faruk

I have the main macintosh HD, and 2 internal hardrives... one labelled "Capture" and the other labelled "Render"
the way i setup my files are as follows.
1. on the Render drive, i made a folder titled "FCP Projects" within that folder I create another folder for every project I create complete with "Pics" folders "Audio" folders and whatever outside elements you want to bring in to your session..... this keeps all those files in one place when you go to archive them.
1a. Within the FCP projects folder (along with my project folders) I created a "-FCP Files-" folder.....I use the dashes to keep the folder at the top of the list.. This is where I tell FCP to send all audio render, autosaves, render files, thumbnail cashes, and wave form cashes to...... for all projects. Basically everything but the capture scratches..... that goes on the Capture harddrive.
2. when I archive a project.... all I take is the project folder from the Render drive with all the pics and audio.... and ignore the fcp files (even the render files) then on the capture harddrive... i back up the capture scratch folder for the specific project.....
3. if you ever HAVE to load the session back to re edit.... you'll have all the media but need to re render......
hope that made sense...... I'll attempt to confuse you even more by making a crappy diagram.... but it's worked great for me.

File search - files and projects all over the place

I have not developed a standard set of scratch locations for all of my files, projects, autosaves, etc. As a result, I have media and project files all over the place on my computer and I now spend most of my time searching. I thought Bridge might help me search for and consolidate all relevant CS3 and CS4 files on all of my drives so that I can then place them into some standard scheme.
When I do a search from the file menu "find" by criteria I drop down a list of various files, but no project files from After Effects, Premiere, Audition, etc. Does Bridge have a feature that will find and move all my files?

I don't think bridge will search across different drives although have read Lightroom will. Bridge searches from where you start your search and then goes down the directory from there. Since I have all my pictures on one drive can't say how that would work it other programs are below it in the directory tree.
If you have Vista is it very fast at searching. It searchs across drives if they are all indexed. The advanced seearch will find keywords "tags" in MS talk.

Instead of Share to Media Browser, what happens if you try Share Menu > Export Movie... (choose Large size) and save it to the Desktop?
If that fails try Share Menu > Export using QuickTime...
Then pick Movie to QuickTime Movie, then click on Options... which is just to the right of Export
Under the Video section click on Settings...
Then in the pulldown menu at the top, titled Compression Type: Choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Then click OK. And click OK again, and save it to the desktop. Once the .mov file is created, you can import that into iDVD and most likely it will work in Wondershare Creator if you prefer to use that instead.

Our system isn't installed yet but we are following that model. Fibre on all the mian editing systems and ethernet for the laptops. The guys will use the proxies to edit from home on the laptops and then upload project and finish them off on the main systems

How do i share media (music and videos) between all of my devices?

i currently have (and attempt to use as much as possible) the following devices: macbook pro 15", ipad 4, iphone 6 plus 64 GB, and appletv 2.
i would love it if these devices would talk to each other correctly. first came the macbook, and i took an internal 2 tb drive cannibalized from my previous pc and transformed it into an external. that drive is desinated as my media drive, it includes all of my video and music. the macbook and the appletv talk to each other flawlessly. every music and video file on that drive is accesible to me using apple tv.
next up is the ipad, which includes some of my videos (movies), but no tv shows. music also does not show up, only options to buy from the store. but i already have a music library that includes many songs downloaded from the store that dont show up, only some stupid U2 album that i never downloaded.
finally, we get to the iphone, which i just got. i get no shared music or videos here at all.
by the way, all settings are set to share with each device in settings and itunes. each device talks to one another. i know this because there is some level of sharing on each device (ie ipad gets videos, iphone shares spreadsheets and other productivity files. appletv shares everything. i now want to sync these devices so that they can share the same data while on the same home network. i should be able to do this, right?
also, i know that i can airdrop/transfer but thats not really what im looking to do atm.

Feature Request: Standard Keyboard Navigation in Media Browser and Project Panel

System Navigational Keyboard Shortcuts in Media Browser and Project Panel
Windows (and I'm sure Mac) has a standard set of keyboard and mouse navigational shortcuts for keyboard and mouse. I'm so used to using them in daily browsing (both in Windows Explorer and in any web browser) that missing them in the PPr Media Browser, or getting a different result in the Project Panel, is still very jarring and slows my workflow (even after having used Premiere Pro [again] since version CS4).
I propose that the Media Browser and Project Panel should honor the OS defaults for keyboard and mouse folder/file navigation. A few of the standard (Windows) keyboard and mouse navigational shortcuts are listed below (listed in order of most helpful to my own work):
Moust Back Button = "BACK"
ALT + LEFT ARROW = "BACK"
UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT = steps through the various folders within the view.
UP, DOWN walks through the directory tree while RIGHT expands the currently selected folder and LEFT contracts that directory (twirl down, etc).
ENTER opens a folder.
ALT + UP = "Folder Above"
ALT + RIGHT ARROW = "FORWARD"
F2 Renames a folder
ENTER "takes" that name to the clip. (current functionality used ENTER to rename a file/folder).
ESC cancels the renaming operation.
Pressing Enter on any piece of Media or Title, etc should take an "expected" action acording to it's context. (i.e. ENTER on a video clip would load it inot the Source Monitor. ENTER on a Title would open it in the Title Editor. ENTER on a folder would take us into that folder).
These functions exist in both Windows Explorer as well as most modern Web browsers. When browsing files and Project folders, it's what I've come to expect. It's muscle memory, if not intuitive. I realize that many of these keyboard commands are already in use in other windows/panels of the application, therefore, these commands should be Panel-specific (i.e. ALT+LEFT works differently in the Media Browser and Project Panel than it does on the Timeline/Sequence). And as always, when making such changes (i.e. changing the behavior of ENTER to F2), this set of keys should be highly configurable based on preference:
Preference:
checkbox: Use OS-specific navigational keyboard and mouse commands in Media Browser and Project Panel
checkbox: Use the (very few) "classic" Adobe keyboard commands in the Media Browser and Project Panel
The most common habit I find myself doing in the Media Browser is clicking the BACK button on my mouse—only to realize, yet again, it doesn't work that way in PPr.
The most common habit I find myself doing in the Project Panel is pressing F2 to rename a folder/bin. Of course that doesn't work. And when I've renamed it, I press ENTER to save the name, but that only moves me to the next folder ready to rename it, too. I also find, out of habit, I try to navigate the bins using the arrow keys and then open the bin/folder using ENTER. Instead, my bin is asking for a new name and I hit ESC to avoid renaming it—now THERE's a shortcut that works the way it should.
I realize this feature may be controversial to some, since it's not the way we're used to doing things in PPr. However, I'm sure there are just as many out there, like me, who are confounded as to why PPr has never worked with the "conventional" navigation shortcuts found throughout the rest of the operating system, be it Windows or Mac.

Sir Churchill, I tried deleting one of the playlists from my computer (Playlist 130). The next day I checked my wife's computer and noticed that Playlist 130 was now missing from her computer as well. try starting a new project and importing your project using the media browser. if that doesn't work just import the sequences from the project via media browser.
