Share Music across multiple iPods

Both my wife and I have iPods.
Is it possible to store music in one location and access/manage it with both iPods?

  • In trying to share music with multiple user accounts on one comp, I quit itunes, located my itunes media folder, moved it to a publicly accessible location. Problem is it didn't work and now I can't get it all back to the way it was.

In trying to share music with multiple users on one computer, I followed the directions on "iTunes:How to share music between different accounts on a single computer" (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1203). I did something wrong because i lost iTunes
Tried to put files back, but it is not the same. Plugged in my ipod and it is not recognizing my computer.
Can someone tell me where iTunes should be, and what sub files should be included with it. Thanks!

If you are seeing the "Connect to iTunes" logo, then your device is in Recovery Mode, and you will need to restore it:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device

  • How do we share music across Vista accounts?

I have Windows Vista. Each person in my family has their own account. We all want to have access to all our music, so I have put it in Public\Public Music.
When I copy a CD onto our PC, it is automatically saved in the My Music folder of the person who is logged on. So when other people log on, they don't have access to it. It is a real pain moving the music manually into the Public\Public Music directory. I have looked for a default directory for when CDs are copied into iTunes, without success.
Is there a default directory that I can set to Public\Public Music?
Is Public\Public Music the best way to share our music across multiple Vista users?
    Thanks

iTunes preferences -> Advanced - iTunes Music folder location
Once that's set, all future imports and purchases will be saved in that location. Note that since iTunes has no folder-watching capability, each user other than the user who does the import or purchase will have to add the tracks to his/her iTunes library manually unless a third-party solution is used. Here are a couple of potential solutions from other developers:

  • I want to set up a home network to be able to watch my movies and litsen to music across multiple platforms without keeping my laptop connected.

I want to set up a home network to be able to watch my movies and litsen to music across multiple platforms.  I have movies purchased from itunes as well as movies from my DVD collection that i converted to an .m4v format.  I currently have these movies stored on an external harddrive. To watch a movie on my apple tv I have to ensure my external hard drive is connected to my macbook pro, then play the movie on my macbook pro and "mirror" it to my apple tv.
Ideally I would like to be able to watch movies from my collection without having to have my laptop on and work from that.  Is it possible to navigate my collection from my Apple TV and play it on my Apple TV.  My macbook pro is the machine I primarily use for work and school it is quite the protological nuissance to have to hook all that up everytime I want to watch a movie.
My thoughts are that I could take my old dekstop pc, attach an external hard drive to that and make that my "media storage".  If I were to do that would I then be able to watch movies as well as select which movie I want to watch from my library through my apple TV without my macbook pro being in the equation?  Or if I should desire to watch a movie from my library through my Macbook Pro, Iphone 4s, and ipad is that possible?  I basically want to set up my library to be accessible from any of my devices.
My devices are; the previously mentioned Apple Tv, macbook pro, iphone 4s, ipad 3. I also have a desktop PC running windows 7, xbox 360 and playstation 3 (the xbox and PS3 would be nice if they could too but wouldnt break my heart as they are my roommate's and not mine so I rarely use them.)
Thank you for any help/advice you guys may have!

atv's can only access media from
    1. a computer which is turned on running itunes
    2. the internet
    no other options
and NAS's which say they can work as itunes libs don't work

  • Manually controlling music across multiple computers

I've seen a lot of similar posts about this and I find it quite frustrating that I was able to manually control my music with my 30GB ipod across multiple computers but my iphone locks me down to just one computer.
Even if I decide to use the 'manual' option it just doesn't let me add music to my iphone from multiple computers. I am constantly directed to erase and re-sync with the new computer. It's not a solution I like considering what I can do with my older ipod.
The only solution I found so far was to jailbreak the iphone but I refuse to go that path. I read a few reasons Apple released as to why it was limited and find it very silly for lack of a better word.
Anyone experience the same frustration and have a solution? Or know if there is an update to resolve this any time soon?
    Thanks!

    One thing that might help.
The iphone will only sync music and video content from one computer at a time.
If you want to sync music or video content from a second computer, itunes will remove what the first computer put on the iphone.
One thing you can do though, is combine our itunes library onto one computer.
    This article might help out.

  • IBooks: Any way to share books across multiple iPads? (Family library)

I'm currently using the Kindle app--which allows my family to share books with ONE account across multiple devices (like 2 iPads and 2 iPhones). Is there any way to do this with iBooks? It appears iBooks is locked to the userid set in iTunes. I love to set the userid within iBooks to make this a family library. Thanks!

You can have multiple iTunes accounts on one computer. BUT you can NOT download DRM protected (commercial) ibooks from different iTunes accounts directly to your computer OR your iphone/ipad by signing into different accounts at any time you like.
If you try, a message saying that you CAN switch accounts will come up, but also warning that you won't be able to download from any other iTunes account to that device or computer for 90 DAYS.
Copying a DRM-protected ibook file (.epub) directly from within your own Music itunes library folder on your computer and then moving the epub file to another computer via wifi, email, usb stick, etc. may work.
You can try dragging the transferred file onto the iTunes app icon to "open" it to add to the iTunes library.
But you will probably need to put the ibook .epub file into an identically named folder in the iTunes folder on the new computer, and then sync the iPhone or iPad with the iTunes app on the second computer using a USB cable connection. Nothing else worked for me.

  • Can you use the Time Capsule as a wireless drive to share music on multiple computers

Does anyone know whether you can use the time capsule almost as a nextwork drive of sorts (i.e. to share Music etc amongst a few computers)?

The TC is a dumb hard drive inside an apple extreme router.. with a couple of knobs on.
It has no media servers.. and very little flexibility.. indeed it serves files.. AFP or SMB.. and that my friend is that.
So if you want a media server in the network..then a mini is a better proposition. At some point, with sales of ssd laptops soaring and space on these devices at a premium, Apple is long overdue on a revamp of the TC.. it is really either time to drop it or to create something a lot more powerful.. the mini might be a cheap computer but it is not really a file server.. having so little internal disk space and lacking external connectors unless you are rich enough to buy thunderbolt.

  • Help need in transfering music to multiple iPods.

    Hello,
I've got a 30 gig iPod Video, my brother has a 40 gig iPod photo, my sister in law has an iPod mini, and my nephew has an iPod Shuffle.
Will it be possible for me to update thier iPods with only selected songs for each? I've done it once before on my brothers iPod without it updating or wiping out everything on his iPod, but I can't recall how I did that. Plus my newphew has an iPod Shuffle, & my sister in-law has an iPod Mini will I be able to update all of them with only selected songs for each? Can anyone tell me if this is possible and how it's done? (explain it to me like I'm a six year old... :o )
    Thanks,

  • Best way to share music across computer?

I host my music on my Mac, but I also have a PC that has better speakers, so I'd like to be able to play tunes from the PC. So I copied my music library to my Network attached server so it cold be seen by every computer in the house. I then opened iTunes on my PC and the music shows up under the shared section on the left. Problem is, none of my playlists went over...so I figured I could export them, but then I realized I have to do that one at a time. What a pain. So for grins I thought I would use the Top rated one built in on my PC iTunes and start from there, but it apparently only looks for tunes in the Music section and doesn't find songs in the shared section...
So this brings me to my question...before I spend any more time trying to figure this out on my own, I thought I'd reach out to the experts and ask, what's the best way to share music from a NAS over my home network (note that my NAS apparently has the Firefly iTunes Streaming server installed but I can't figure out how to use it...)
    Ideas?

  • Can you share music between two iPods?

my sister just got an iPod, and she wants some of my songs from my iPod without bying them online... both accounts are on the same computer, and i was wondering if it's possible to kind of copy and paste my music to her ipod with out deleting them from my account... if it is possible, can you please reply and tell me how to do this? thanks

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    iRepo Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Sharing music across two IPods

I have two IPods, one computer. Am I allowed to share a purchased music from ITunes across the two IPods? If so, how? I purchased a selection from ITunes and loaded to one IPod but I can't figure out how to get the selection to the other IPod. Is this even allowed?

You should be able to simply connect the second iPod - it will ask you if you want to associate the new iPod with the current iTunes library. Click yes and it will load the iTunes library onto the iPod (overwriting any music that may already be on that iPod).
Is this not working for you?
What happens when you connectt he second iPod?
    Cheers!
