Share NAS directories on LION Server

I want to share directories on a Synology NAS via LION Server.
Currently I have LION setup as Opendirectory server, Synology as LDAP client.
Synology is connected to LDAP server on Lion, I can see the LDAP users in the Synology LDAP user base, however I can't seem to be able to setup shares residing on the NAS via the server.
I am sharing a sharepont on synology, can mount it in finder of the server, but then I am unable to publish the mount as a shared directory in either server.app or in system settings for sharing.
any thoughts?

Hi Jonathan,
probably my descripotion is not accurate should, I want to manage the network shares via the server (WGM).
in principle its like this:
OD user logs in, gets his network home folder (on NAS) that synchronizes with the local home folder (all this managed and configured via mobility in WGM).
OD user also gets access to group shares on the NAS, also managed via WGM.
The storage of data should occur on the NAS.
I am starting to think that iSCSI may be th eway to go for simplicity.

  • How do I best share an iPhoto library to several users on a Lion Server?

I am considering setting up a Lion Server to use for our family of five. The one thing I struggle to understand from searching for information here, and throughout the Internet is: Can I set up a Lion server to have shared libraries for iTunes and iPhoto, and what is the best way to set it up? I would also like to understand if such a shared setup would create any issues with reduced functionality and/or performance?
Today we share libraries across several accounts on one computer, and that works mostly fine, although with some restrictions (only one account can have iPhoto open at a time, which is not much of an issue if on same computer; iTunes can share music but not Apps, ...)

I followed Apple's support team's instruction to create iPhoto on the new external hard drive (My Passport) - and then drag and drop the existing iPhoto library onto it from the Master file.
Don't know who told you that but it would be difficult to be more wrong.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

Ditto. Guest accounts shouldn't have a password. No way to enter one in System Prefs...

  • How do I connect a user account to a server's share points when the user is on the same Mac as the Lion Server?

I've installed and configured Lion Server on an old iMac that suddenly became available when I upgraded to a new iMac. I've got a share point on there. It was easy. Love it.
My bookkeeper comes into my office once a week and works on that iMac. He already has a regular user account set up there. He needs to access the sharepoint that is on that iMac he's using, and which is now running Lion Server. But I can't see the server from his account, and I can't manually connect to it - I get an error to connect locally on the Mac instead.
But I can't navigate to the point in the user account that I'm using as a file serving account to get him access to the directory I'm sharing.
So, in short, how does a local user on an iMac running Lion Server connect to the server's sharepoints?

All drives are now listed under volumes both local and remote.
I would try the fullpath using /Volumes/....
or post the file paths your trying
are you trying the goto menu?

  • Use Lion server to share video?

Since the gallery part of dot mac is gone, how can I share family videos?
I would like to be able to use my Lion server to do that, but am not sure how, using a web-based GUI as was done on the dot mac gallery.
    Thanks.

Note:  I have figured out (thanks to apple support) how to use lion server for web sharing and file sharing.

    Miracles do happen.
Because I just bought Lion Server, I was able to get a guy from the Apple Server support group on the phone, for a long time, and he helped me set this up using the Server app and the Server Admin app.
Now I have a password prompt on my Web Sharing files.
It's an incredible relief to have this working.
    Thanks for the responses.

  • I have a new lion server and 4 lion laptops. The laptops loose connection to the shared documents and printers from the server after roughly 1 hour. By disconnecting and re-connecting wireless the connection is regained to shares and printers

I have a new lion server and 4 lion laptops. The laptops loose connection to the shared documents and printers from the server after roughly 1 hour. By disconnecting and re-connecting wireless the connection is regained to shares and printers. We can still surf the web when it goes down.

Ok 1st one. The warning restriction message relates to this line in main.cf:
    smtpd_helo_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated  permit_mynetworks  check_helo_access hash:/etc/postfix/helo_access  reject_non_fqdn_hostname  reject_invalid_hostname  permit reject_invalid_helo_hostname
The last reject occurs after the single word "permit" and is ignored.
    However, that's not the problem.
I'm not exactly sure what's happening, but this might be a clue.
It would appear that either postfix is not being able to create the socket for private/policy or it's somehow created with the wrong permissions.  You might need to ramp up the debug level to get a better idea.
You could check if it's being created by "netstat -a | grep private/policy" in terminal.
My guess is that it's not being created because there is no setup statement in your master.cf file, but I don't understand why postfix would be looking for it if it isn't set up.  Private/policy I think relates to grey listing.  Maybe gives you a hint.

  • Lion server and Share Points

My company just got a new iomega SAN and I wanted to test it on a lion server. So I setup lion server on a mac pro and configured the SAN to the switch. The problem is that when I go to server app, File sharing & click + to add a share point Im not able to add the shares from the SAN, only the Macintosh HD shows.
But when I switch to my snow leopard server I can add the SAN shares with no problem. Does anybody know how I can get this working with lion server?

You should check OS X logs and Windows client logs to have a better understanding of what happened.

  • How do I share a folder over the internet with Mountain Lion server?

I am new to using formal servers.  In Snow Leopard I was able to use web sharing to serve a small website and if I wanted to share a folder with someone I would  just provide the person I wanted to share a file with the path to the file inside the sites directory.  With Mountain Lion this functionality was removed from the sharing section of system preferences.
I purchased mountain lion server and was able to restore the website serving ability, but I haven't been able to figure out how to share a folder.  I am still looking over what documentation I can find, but for the most part it just tells me to set up the services without telling me how.  Any assistance would be helpful.  Networking is not my area of expertise.
    Best Regards,
    David Finell

I purchased server to assist with this as I am unfamiliar with the command line protocols for using apache.  Because of the UNIX architechture of OSX and I presume apache, I am uncomfortable using the command line for fear of causing serious problems.
Unfortunately, the documentation that I have seen for mountain lion server is wanting in either its completeness or layout/functionability.  To summarize the server instructions as I understand them.  It just says to configure it and my system to meet my requirements without telling me how.
I am confident that both the apache command line and server are capable of accomplishing what I was able to do before under snow leopard.  I just haven't figured out how.
I was able to provide a link to family and clients like http://ipaddress/~user/folder
    This no longer works.

  • Windows can't connect to shares on Lion Server

I can't connect any windows machines (XP, Vist, or 7) to a Mac Pro running Lion Server. When attempting to connect, the windows user is prompted for credentials, and nothing entered in this box works even the server admin account info, once entering account credentials, it comes back with NAMEOFWINDOWSCOMPUTER\USER as if it's trying to sign into a domain, which we don't have domains.
I can't seem to find anything relevent when searching...

There are a couple things you can try:
1.\ go to the apple server, sys prefs, sharing, selct file sharing and then select option. from there make sure the both check boxes are selected. then select done.
2.\ while you are there, in the shared folders section, selct the folder you would like to share (or add if its not) and make sure the user is in the users pane that you want to share the folder with.
3.\ restart your windows machine to make sure it forgets any passwords you may have put in.
4.\ if it still doesnt ask for a user account go to map network drive. and select the option to put another username and password in. for the user name user SERVERNAME\username - ensure the servername is in CAPITAL letter...
    hope this helps...

  • Change share name in Lion server?

Is there a way to change a share name in lion server? For example, I have a folder on my disk named "Sophos Anti-Virus" that I want to share via AFP. However, I want to share name to be simply "Sophos". I know I was able to do this somehow in 10.5 Server, but I can't seem to find a way to do it in Lion.

    Hi
A way of doing this would be to launch the Server App and select the File Sharing Service. Select the share point and click the 'minus' icon to remove the share.
Obviously warn users they should save any data they are accessing and to disconnect from the share first.
Once the share has been removed from the File Sharing Service navigate to the folder in the Finder and change the name. Go back to the File Sharing Service and click the 'plus' icon and re-add the newly named share.
    HTH?

  • Lion Server vs NAS

I'm out of space on my primary machines trying to decide which solution is better: FW 800 drives attached to a Lion Server or a NAS.
    1. Is there a NAS that reliably works as a Time Machine device? Read about the Synology and QNAP boxes. Is using them as Time Machine supported?
    2. Likewise with iTunes, does the iTunes server feature vendors advertise work?
    Thanks for any insights.

I am using a 3 terabyte NAS, the 'My Book Live' from Western Digital.
The MBL supports Time Machine. I am currently backing up two of my Macs

  • Lion Server vs NAS System

    Hello all,
I have a long and interesting question that i hope can be answered.
I currently have an imac running lion server and am starting to have problems with it getting slow and stuck. As i was going to fix the issue, i started to think about various nas drives that could replace the server and be much more effeciant then constantly trying to solve these problems. All i use my server for is file sharing, and with the release of ios 5, i was going to use the webdav so i could access my files away from home. but nas drives such as netgear can also do this right through a website, and various applications.  I also pointed my editing mac to a external drive on the server for 1920x1080 video scratch
First, do i stick with the server, or go to the nas system, and will the nas be able to work as a scratch drive.
Second, if i get a nas, which do i get. ive seen some from netgear which so far im leaning towards, and lacie and western digital.
Third, with a nas, does it show up on my mac just like any external hard drive? and is it complicated to set it up to be accessed anywhere in the world.
Lastly, Is it possible to have multiple nas in one house?
As you can probably tell, im new to this stuff.
    thanks for the help!

  • Trouble connecting to Lion server AFP shares after changing server's hostname

    Hello everyone,
I recently changed hostname of my Lion server box (via Server application) and now my clients are having a problem when trying to connect to its AFP shares via aliases. It takes 160 seconds of "resolving alias to <sharename>" before it finally works. Aliases were created by navigating to the server, connecting with "Connect As", providing valid credentials, then navigating one level up and dragging the share icon (blue disk with three white people outlines) to the Desktop with Option-Command.
What is interesting, if I create a new account on a client machine, create an alias, and click on it - it works without any delay, as it was for the clients that are having problems now; so I'm assuming some details about the previous server name got cached somewhere.
The clients with long delay problems can access the shares quickly if they click on the server in the Finder window drawer, then "Connect As" and provide their login credentials - it works instantly then.
I've been digging around quite a bit (deleting Keychain saved Network passwords for any and all references to the server I could find), and also by looking at kerberos logs on the server. What is interesting, the newly created clients I mention above who don't have delay with connecting, don't leave any records in the kerberos log file; but the ones that have 160 second delay do - there's nothing for 160 seconds, and then there is a flurry of activity, as the connection is finally established.
When a client who has trouble connecting uses the "Connect As" method described above, entries in the Kerberos log are created instantly when client clicks connect.
Probably also worth noting that renaming of the server was related to me setting up Open Directory on it.
Any pointers would be greatly apprecited.

I experienced almost exactly the problems you described. I also found that connecting via command line using mount_afp worked right away... and once the connection is established, mounting via finder was super fast.
Tried all kinds of craziness on the client, even a full Time Machine restore.
    Tried fixing Open Directory.
I was absolutely stumped by what was happening, but then thought, Hmm. I'm wondering if it's related to MobileMe going down? I noticed it started to happen after July 31...
Success! That was it! Signing out of MobileMe in System Preferences made everything work the way it should!
CDPlayer2: check if the clients are signed in to MobileMe, and if signing out fixes things - I'd appreciate it if you could post your results. Thanks.

  • Anyone able to share photos to AppleTV from Lion Server?

I cannot get my AppleTV to see my photos in iPhoto (using iTunes photo sharing capabilities) running on Lion Server.  Called Apple - no solution.  tried various reinstalls, configs, permission and access changes - no go.

Yes confirmed AppleTV2 displays photos from Aperture/iPhoto library on iMac.
Could use slideshow thereof, & it is also uploading recent photos from iPhone and displaying on AppleTV2 with Photostream via Homesharing & iCloud.
As you can view your music from iTunes on your AppleTV -
= Homesharing is enabled and working (for music)
= It is not a network problem
(Assume you know most/some of this already therefore ignore parts obvious only included for completeness)
On the AppleTV when you click "Computer" does it show Photos listed (as well as music movies tv shows podcasts iTunes u) when i click this it displays my photos as above.
There are very few settings :-
Open Aperture  (on menu bar) Aperture / Prerferences / Photostream = check all 3 boxes (enable, auto import, auto upload)
On AppleTV2 - Settings / Computers = Homesharing enabled (shows Turn off Homesharing button & dialogue confirming same)
Open System Preferences (under Applelogo menu bar) :
Check iCloud button / settings enabled for Photostream with tick in checkbox and shows available storage
Check the adaptive firewall - is it on ->
Sytem Preferences / Security & Privacy button /  Firewall
If so check advanced settings Add (+ button) -> iPhoto and make sure you change setting to "Allow incoming connections".
Check other port firewall in Server Admin is not blocking also if enabled try turning off & retest AppleTV2.
Perhaps list what you see on Apple TV if still not working when go to photos section and confirm above.
