Share photos across multiple accounts same machine--issues

Dear All,
I recently created a disk image as per the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US, section
Alternatively, move the iPhoto library to a disk image
Subsequently I copied the iphoto library to this disk.
Now when I connect with one user, I see all the pictures OK, no problem. I log out (or even restart the computer) and connect with a different user (yes, I made sure the permissions are set read/write for these two users). With this new user, every time I open the library from that shared drive I get an error (something about the library is locked asking me to restart the computer); when I do I get the same. Then I open iPhoto with "option"+"command" and choose rebuild database (after tryiong repair unsusccessfully). The stupid thing keeps munching and munching for hours at in (library has 80 GB) and in the end it screws up all my events and put pictures (not sure they are ALL there) in a stupid event called "recovered photos".
I have tried everything I could, I don't know what to do anymore. Please help (yes, I ran disk utility verify disk and verify permissions, all seems to be just fine).
THANKS!

The message that I get when trying to open the library from the other user account is:
Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.

  • Sharing one iTunes library across multiple accounts on the same Mac

Hello, I've poked around at some of the posts dealing with sharing one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac but it seems like this can only be done if the libary is moved to a shared folder. I realize this can be done but I was trying to share it the way it is described in a post on Apple support (See link below.). That post seemed to imply that you don't have to move the library from its original location (owned by account A, e.g.), rather just make a couple preference changes in the accounts, use fast user switching and voila. That doesn't seem to work. So my question is this: Is the only way to share one iTunes music library across multiple accounts on the same Mac to move it to a shared folder? I'm running 10.4.8 on an Intel iMac. Thanks in advance!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195

After reading this and several other related threads, I am becoming thoroughly confused about all of this. I have a situation similar to the one that pokerpal described in the post dated January 7 at 8:06 pm, except that the music files on my system are located on an external hard drive. Everything else is pretty much the same though - I am the admin user (and the main iTunes user and maintainer) and my girlfriend is a standard user who has no music in her own iTunes library. She can see and listen to and make playlists from and sync her iPod with the music in this library from her account, and I can do the same thing, independent of her, from my account. And if I make a change to information within a song, she doesn't see it, and vice versa, and I understand that. What I don't understand is why when I add a song or an album to the music files by importing a CD or downloading something from the iTunes Music Store, she has no way of knowing that unless I tell her, and then she can add it to her library by using the "Add to Library" function. Is there no way of automatically updating her library files to add the new song(s)? We have almost 15,000 songs and videos in that library, and I don't even want to think about what might have to happen if the answer to my question is "no." Interestingly enough, if I put an update to a Word document in the same exact location (on the hard drive), we can update that and pass it back and forth all day - why is that such a difficult task for iTunes to accomplish?
Sorry I went on so long, but this has been building up for some time, and none of the solutions I've read about here have really been of any help, so I'm a bit frustrated and, as I said at the beginning, confused.

  • Problem sharing photos from multiple accounts on one Mac

I am trying to share two different iPhoto libraries from two different User Accounts on the same Mac. In each account I have iPhoto Sharing 'Look for shared photos' and 'Share my photos' checked. I also have the Firewall on with port 8770 enabled.
    1. From a Powerbook I can only connect to one library. Once I pick that first library the second library will not load at all. I have to quick and restart iPhoto in order to select the second library. -- I fixed this by turning off my Firewall. With the Firewall off I can switch between the libraries at will. My question, what ports should I enable besides 8770 to allow multiple instances of iPhoto to run? (Just like you need multiple ports to have the ATV connect to multiple instances of iTunes.)
    2. When I am configured as above, my two iPhoto applications do not see each other. They can both see and connect to the Powerbook. And the Powerbook can see each running instance. But neither iPhoto instance on the same Mac can see the other. This is new with iPhoto '08. I was able to do this with iPhoto '06.
    Thank you

    HI Darien,
Here are all the links I have for the different kinds of sharing:
    SHARING IPHOTO LIBRARIES
Sharing libraries between users on the same local network
You can also share a library on the same machine between users the same way.
Sharing libraries between users on the same machine...
-both users must have sharing enabled in their iPhoto Preferences
-both users must be logged in and have iPhoto running
-Remember that you can only view the other library. You can't edit the photos or play the saved slideshows or view the made books or burn them to CD or DVD. The books and slideshows will show up as an album. You can play that album as an "on the fly" slideshow. You can drag images from the sharing library to your library in the source column to import them to your library. You can then edit, add to albums, books, slideshow, etc.

SHARING ONE IPHOTO LIBRARY BETWEEN USERS ON SAME MACHINE
You can try one of these three methods:
1- Use iPhoto Library Manager-the paid version
The documentation page will give instructions on how it is done.
2- Sharing one iPhoto library between several users on one machine
3- Share an iPhoto Library in tiger Using ACL's
4- I have also read about ShareAlike
There is no other info on the site about how it works.
I strongly urge anyone wanting to try any of the methods for sharing one iPhoto Library folder among more than one user to backup all iPhoto Library folders before attemptin anything.

  • How Can I Get My Ratings and Playlists to Mirror Across Multiple Accounts?

I'm sharing my music across two accounts on my Mac by placing my iTunes folder in the Shared folder, with an alias to that in each User's Music folder. It works fine, but the User of the other account would like the benefit of all my Playlists, and would especially like to have all My Ratings.
How can I get My Ratings and Playlists to mirror across multiple accounts? I would've thought simply importing the <iTunes Music Library.xml> file would do it, but since we're both using the same iTunes folder, we must already be using the same XML file, right?

The answer about where the ratings, etc. are stored is not an easy one, but the best I can figure is that it is a combination of the iTunes Music Library.xml, the iTunes Library file, and the com.apple.iTunes.plist. Apparently, the com.apple.iTunes.plist (in the under User/Library/Preferences) references the other two files. If you close iTunes, take the com.apple.iTunes.plist out of the user's Library/Preferences folder and then reopen iTunes, you will see that all the ratings, play counts, etc. (track information) will have disappeared. If you close iTunes, replace the com.apple.iTunes.plist, then reopen iTunes, the track information will be restored. The playlists, which are not part of the track information, seem to function independently of the com.apple.iTunes.plist, but if you share the whole iTunes folder across accounts, this should include the playlists. When I back up my iTunes library to another folder, I back up a copy of the current com.apple.iTunes.plist from my User/Library/Preference folder. I think that the way this works across multiple accounts is that the com.apple.iTunes.plist reads track information from the other files in the iTunes folder, because if you throw away the com.apple.iTunes.plist from one user account, it affects all the other user accounts sharing the same iTunes folder.

  • How do we share music across Vista accounts?

I have Windows Vista. Each person in my family has their own account. We all want to have access to all our music, so I have put it in Public\Public Music.
When I copy a CD onto our PC, it is automatically saved in the My Music folder of the person who is logged on. So when other people log on, they don't have access to it. It is a real pain moving the music manually into the Public\Public Music directory. I have looked for a default directory for when CDs are copied into iTunes, without success.
Is there a default directory that I can set to Public\Public Music?
Is Public\Public Music the best way to share our music across multiple Vista users?
    Thanks

Is there a default directory that I can set to Public\Public Music?
iTunes preferences -> Advanced - iTunes Music folder location
Once that's set, all future imports and purchases will be saved in that location. Note that since iTunes has no folder-watching capability, each user other than the user who does the import or purchase will have to add the tracks to his/her iTunes library manually unless a third-party solution is used. Here are a couple of potential solutions from other developers:

  • Apple tv under multiple account, same computer

I have the apple TV connected under my account log in. My daughter purchased a movie under her account log in. How do i get the movie (from her account log in) to the apple TV (under my account log in)?
Same idea applies to the photos in iphoto under different log in accounts.
    THank you!
intel based iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

An Apple TV cannot sync to a sleeping or shutoff computer; the computer must be on and iTunes must be running. In the case of two accounts on the same computer, I've not seen whether that will work or not, but if it can, it would have to be using Fast User Switching and iTunes would have to be running in her account.
You might instead just want to copy the movie from her iTunes library to yours (copy it first to a shared location like the Shared folder in the Users folder, then just drag it into the iTunes window under your account) and then authenticate your iTunes to her iTunes Store account. Then you don't have to worry about syncing or sharing with multiple accounts on the same system.

  • IBooks: Any way to share books across multiple iPads? (Family library)

I'm currently using the Kindle app--which allows my family to share books with ONE account across multiple devices (like 2 iPads and 2 iPhones). Is there any way to do this with iBooks? It appears iBooks is locked to the userid set in iTunes. I love to set the userid within iBooks to make this a family library. Thanks!

You can have multiple iTunes accounts on one computer. BUT you can NOT download DRM protected (commercial) ibooks from different iTunes accounts directly to your computer OR your iphone/ipad by signing into different accounts at any time you like.
If you try, a message saying that you CAN switch accounts will come up, but also warning that you won't be able to download from any other iTunes account to that device or computer for 90 DAYS.
Copying a DRM-protected ibook file (.epub) directly from within your own Music itunes library folder on your computer and then moving the epub file to another computer via wifi, email, usb stick, etc. may work.
You can try dragging the transferred file onto the iTunes app icon to "open" it to add to the iTunes library.
But you will probably need to put the ibook .epub file into an identically named folder in the iTunes folder on the new computer, and then sync the iPhone or iPad with the iTunes app on the second computer using a USB cable connection. Nothing else worked for me.

  • How to share programs between users on same machine?

I'm sure there is an easy answer to this and as a proud five year Apple user, I'm kinda embarrassed to ask. But now that I am sharing a computer with new fiance, I need to know!
How can we share software between users on the same machine without downloading it under each user?

The difficult question isn't sharing programs (which almost always are shared by default) but how to share data. In particular, music in iTunes, photos in iPhoto, videos in iMovie, they all resist sharing because those apps were not designed for it. In general, to share data you can use the "Shared" folder. Go to your home folder, and go up a level to Users, then select Shared. You might want to drag it to the places list on the left in the finder so you can get to it easily. You can put your iTunes and iPhoto libraries in Shared. To select the shared versions, hold down the Option key while launching iTunes or iPhoto. Video files can also be stored in Shared, however iMovie seems to be hard connected to an individuals Movie folder.

  • Problems sharing iTunes library across multiple accounts on one imac

I have followed the Mac OS instructions in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203 to share music accounts on the family iMac by putting the iTunes Media folder in a public directory. When I go to connect to this library the I cannot see the actual iTunes Media folder but the following file path is available: ~/Public/Automatically Add to iTunes.localized. Selecting this folder does not appear to make the library available.

I'm no expert in this department, but I believe that your question was the reason Apple started the 'Group' calendar. Check this page out:

  • Can I use home share across multiple accounts on the same computer?

we all use one computer and have one music library in a public folder. Can we use home share so that when one of us makes a purchase (and adds it to our library) others can easily see it and have the option to add it to their library too (without duplicating the file)?

Log out of one Cloud account (MAY need to restart your computer, not sure of this... hazy memory) then log in to your OTHER Cloud account

I have four user accounts on the same iMac and I'd like to be able to view the files within each account.  When I try access one of the other three accounts through Finder, the folders have red minus signs on them.  If I try to open one, I get an error message about not have the right authorities.  However, I've given all four user accounts administrator access.  Thanks.

Thanks for the response.  Do I change the rights by opening the folder, clicking "Get Info" and chaning the permissions to "write and read?"  If so, I did that.  Is there anything else I need to do?

  • How to share photos with multiple iPads

I am looking to share my photos with other family members who have iPads. How can I "publish" photos that will sync to multiple devices over WiFi?  In other words, I want to push photos of my children to their grandparents (as simple as possible for the grandparents)

Wifi will only work if they are al on the same wireless network.  An easier solution might be dropbox.  You can post your pictures there, share the link with anyone who you want to see the pictures, and they can bring them onto their machines.  This will work with family members who do not have pads, on any device that can acccess the web.
I believe you can set up an account for free.
