Share to youtube/export to quicktime dialog box questions

In Share to YouTube, or export to quicktime, you get a dialog box that says:
Playback Uses: Fixed Timing
Slide Duration: 5 seconds
Build Duration: 2 second
The keynote presentation is built with all the correct timings that I don't want to change, so I guess I don't understand this questions. I would want the presentation to follow the timings build into the elements and page transitions.
Please advise.

Export Save / Open dialog box appears behind disco screen

Hi all
Disco 10g Plus, excel, latest Sun java 6.16 jvm
We have an annoying but strange issue with exporting.
A user opens and runs a report ok.
Withing Disco 10 plus they then click on either file-Export-excel or click on the Export Excel icon on disco plus toolbar
Either way the export happens and a dialog box appears with blue progress bar and then this disappears.
And then nothing appears to happen.
However, something actually has happened, behind the disco 10 window the 'File Download' dialog box with 'Do you wish to open or save this file?' appears. Clicking on save saves it to PC and clicking open opens it in Excel which is fine.
I am not sure of this box belongs to excel or internet explorer but does anyone know of any way to have this dialog box appear IN FRONT of the current disco plus window as some of our users think that disco has 'frozen' and thus log support calls.

I have heard of folks complaining that exports to Excel hang. I have not had any feedback to say that the dialog box is actually open behind the scenes. This is very interesting news and thanks for reporting it. I will certainly look for this in the future and see if I can find a pattern.
If I may ask, what exact version of Discoverer are you on and what cumulative patch level have you implemented?
Also, what browser are you using and have you tried this in another one?
Have you tried deinstalling Java 6.16 and tested with an older one like 6.11 which I have seen working very well?
As much extra information as you can provide will definitely help and could trigger an idea from someone reading.

Why does the iTunes 10.4.1 update take me to to Apple's download webpage (to download a full version of iTunes) instead of the usual Safari/Quicktime pop-up/dialog box where I usually perform the updates?

iTunes 10.4 and Safari 5.1 contain more than 'just' the OSX Lion-release but stability and security improvements as well.
For example, here is http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070 what the Safari 5.1 contains.
In here http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ I can't find an "end-date" for the download of the Lion installer.
Nonetheless, personaly I would download the Lion installer and then copy it (from your Apllications folder) to a secure place (backup harddisk, external hardisk etc.).
When your IT gives it a go you can then use te Lion installer from inside the Applications folder, but I would also say to make a bootable clone of your current OSX Snow Leopard before starting the Lion installation.

Custom Dialog Box Question

I have a custom dialog box that uses both radio buttons and edit_text fields. What I am trying to do is make so that when a certain radio is selected the edit_text field will be filled with a suggested answer. Is that possible and how could it be done?

Yes, data is acquired from fields with the "dialog.store()" function and loaded with the "dialog.load()" function. Say that one radio button is named "Rad1" and the text box is named "Txt1". Then this code represents the action script for the radio button, it places "New Text" into the the text field.

The Action script is a member of the dialog object. You can see examples of how this can be build by downloading a trial version of AcroDialogs, which will build the correct JavaScript code for adding an action to a radio button.

Increase the Size of the Range Text Field in the Export Adobe PDF Dialog Box

It’s not unusual for me to export a wide range of pages and I hate that the text field for Range is so small, often cutting off from view many of the page numbers.
There’s a lot of blank space sitting there, begging to be used. A quick measurement shows that the field can be more than doubled from the current 150px to 380px.
The attached PNG shows the text field I'm talking about.

The debug version allows easy changing of the size, and yes all it takes is changing 1 number. The reason it is only half is probably aesthetic.

Is there benefit to Share to YouTube rather than upload full Quicktime clip

I would like the highest quality video for YouTube. Is it better just to upload the full normal Quicktime export to YouTube than to use the Share to YouTube in the latest version of Final Cut? It seems YouTube re-encodes everything again so what is the point of Share to YouTube if it will lose more quality and be re compressed?

The trick is to give youtube something they can't mangle too badly. I'm not a big fan of "sharing"-- the term itself sets my teeth on edge-- but that's another story. There are a lot of articles on doing good youtube encodes. You can search this forum. I made a couple of presets in compressor a while ago and just use those. Not at my machine right now so I can't give you specifics, but it's an h.264 file.

Keynote 08 will not finish export to quicktime, or share with any apps

I have a presentation that I am using a smartbuild (160 photos) that will not finish exporting to quicktime, or share with youtube or iweb/idvd, etc. It saved once out of twenty attempts. It freezes up around the last photo in the smartbuild then quits unexpectedly. Any tips?

The other work around that I've found is to tell it "send to iDVD" but then quit iDVD when it pops that up. You'll end up with just the quicktime file it created.
What I noticed is that when a "quicktime export" plays in QT, it has a fps rate of like 7 or 8 or even 13 but the dynamic "playing fps" goes up to 30 during transitions and back to 0 when there isn't a transition. At least with the iDVD cheat you end up with 24 fps. That may work for some people, that is film rate, but I'm in need of NTSC DV 29.97. So I import it into Final Cut Express, and do an export conversion.
I don't use audio, so I don't know how that would work in this cheat, but since your voiceover (I'm guessing based on trying to put music to my slides) is one entire track, you can add that in FCE before that export and line it up there.
If anyone else has suggestions to get a 29.97 export correct with the "export to quicktime", I'd love to hear it. This cheat takes too long for my work.

Problem when exporting to Vimeo I get message "The share operation has failed. Quicktime error: -50" The file only gets to 8% before this happens any idea how to fix I have a movie deadline to meet!

Finished editing a short movie.
Then went to share on vimeo but got this message - see also screenshot when I tried to export to desktop.
Problem when exporting to Vimeo I get message "The share operation has failed. Quicktime error: -50" The file only gets to 8%.
Have tried deleting my render files for the project and also another fix mentioned of deleting any black space files on the edit itself but neither work?
Just upgraded to OS Mavericks could this be causing it? If so how to downgrade?

Thanks for your help both, I called Apple tech support and spoke to a really helpful chap called Andrea who helped me out. Now got my Master file sorted and am trying Vimeo upload again.
Just to clarify points for people out there with the same issue:
First steps
- Ensure background rendering is turned off in preferences
- Delete project and events render files
- If upgraded to Mavericks then go to FCPX in finder under applications hit buttons 'CMD' and 'I' together and tick the 'prevent App Nap' box.
Next Steps
I had already done all of this when Apple Tech spoke to me so we discussed the message 'Quicktime -50' and what it meant. It wasnt a purely generic error message but was not detailed enough to point to one specific issue. This problem had occurred in previous years (so Mavericks not wholly to blame) and patches were issued over the years by Apple to help resolve some of the problems.
The message essentially is indicating that there is a problem somewhere with the media in some way shape or form.
My export went to 8% then failed. Apple's answer was that the project settings were corrupted in some way.
So what they suggested (so simple I could kick myself) was to select all the media files by 'CMD + A' then copy them 'CMD + C' then create and open a new project timeline, and then paste in 'CMD + V'.
Then we tried export again this time to a master file with some settings detailed by Apple.
The difference now was it got to 40% then failed but due to a different reason 'error -1 frame 10124 error'
At last we get past the project issues and into the event media issues, it seems that when I loaded the compact flash last night, the iMac kept ejecting the reader so had to copy files over quickly and seems that some of the file clip I used although showed on the viewer, didn't seem to have loaded all the correct media, so selecting this clip frame 10124 on the viewer I found that it showed as red on the frame row which implied an issue. So I simply bladed it off and deleted it.
Then I reran the export to Master file and it worked, though jumping from 40% to 100% complete was a shock to me!
Now am trying the export to Vimeo - hope this helps some of you out there. Worst case pick up the phone to Apple and speak to the Final Cut Pro guys they can help.

No "same name" dialog box for export

I am using iMovie 3 and for my recent project I exported several similar QuickTime movies whose names were similar, differing only in "part 1" "part 2" etc. I made a mistake and gave the same name as a previous export to a following export. After it was all done, I realized my mistake. I did not get any "item with the same name, do you want to replace it?" dialog box to let me confirm replacing the file. Why? I thought all good software and operating systems will always warn you if an overwrite is imminent. I don't think it should matter that it is an "export" rather than a "save". The net result is the same, an overwrite. Is there something I can do to activate a warning option from iMovie other than buy a new OS CD and a new iLife CD to get me out of accidental overwrites with this old version 3?

You should get a warning before a file gets overwritten.
I guess one of two things happened. The first is you unconsciously clicked the a button you shouldn't have. I've done it myself on more than one occasion.
The other thing that might have happened is that the two files got saved to different locations. Have you tried using Spotlight (or otherwise searching) to try to locate the file?

InDesign CS5 crashes when trying to export a PDF and/or a Warning dialog box appears!

Just bought a new macbook pro 15" non retina the other day and the SAME version of InDesign CS5 that was running on my 2010 iMac is now crashing each time I get a Warning dialog box and/or try exporting a PDF?!??!?! How was this NOT an issue before and now is??? Running the same Lion 10.7.4 as well....
Holding the alt key while deleting a page does help it not prompt the warning dialog box, but no help to exporting a pdf...
So guessing this is a Apple issue and we need an update or??
I am only using Fontbook and have NOT even added any new fonts yet, practically bare bones mac still with just CS5...
What is also weird is that the warning dialog boxes are always BLANK and have no text on them, like there is a font issue??
I've cleared the system font cache, reset InDesign prefs, reset PRAM and NVRAM, re-installed InDesign and updated to 7.0.4...
This is madness....please help me in the name of all that is good.

figured it out:
- power off mac and turn back on while holding down Command + R (dont do it on an external keyboard just to be safe)
- choose the re-install Lion option (I'm sure there is another way to re-install Lion, this is just the way I did it, not saying its the best or only method)
- DO NOT INSTALL MACBOOK (Mid 2012) Software Update 1.0 - THIS SCREWS ADOBE UP!

How to force a dialog box for a network share lot BTMM login

Once OSX has remembered a network share with User and PW, I cannot find a way to force a dialog box to appear, that allow manual entry of a different User and PW. This is the case whether for a LAN device or WAN device via Back to My Mac (BTMM.) This is driving me out of my mind
The issue is particularly acute, because sometimes BTMM won't connect with the stored info, but is fine if one can just type in the User and PW.

Please give me some pointers.
As I was searching for solutions for this problem, I was told by someone that I could deploy my jsp's and servlets in iPlanet instead of the web container in my app server. That way, when I invoke invalidate() on the HttpSession object, the session would be destroyed and the login information would be gone with it. So user will get reprompted next time. However, I've never deployed anything but static contents in iPlanet, I don't know how and if it's appropiate to deploy dynamic stuff in there. Any thoughts?

I know for a fact that Photoshop at least was working fine yesterday (created, saved and saved as multiple layered tiffs). I cannot remember if Version Cue updated just before I left or if I could properly create, save, and save-as then too and it was only after turning it off and returning this morning that it stopped working. Either way, any ideas?

Okay, awesome! I did that and now the Open dialog box is showing - none of the others are though - does this mean that I'll need to go to each of my dialog boxes missing (save, save as) etc., resize in pshop to use correctly in InDesign? What do I do for the dialog boxes that are in InDesign and aren't showing, but are not in Photoshop (ala "Open New Library" or "Open New Book?")

Set location of print and export dialog boxes?

Is there any way to set the location of the print and export dialog boxes in the viewer?
To say, have the dialog box show up in the top left corner instead of in the middle of the document?

There's no easy way to customize that for the viewer.
Some people make the toolbar invisible and write their own controls.
