Shared computer showing up in Finder not part of my network

Hello,
I am very confused on what is going on here. Basically, I am at a friends house and have my MacBook connected directly with an Ethernet chord. There are no other connections going out of the DSL box/Router because there is only one output for internet. It's the generic one that comes with internet installation.
That being said, in the sidebar of my Finder window there is a computer listed under shared called "office" and I am capable of viewing all of the files on this computer.
The only other computer in the house is a Windows 98 Desktop computer, and does not have the same files on it, nor is it even connected to the internet.
Like I said, this is a direct connection, no wireless router.
If it matters, I was previously in town using unsecured wifi from local businesses and then came home, plugged in the ethernet, and the shared computer popped up.
When I disconnect the ethernet, the shared computer goes away.
I am completely boggled on how this can be occuring.

Do you have your MacBook's AirPort turned on? You are likely picking up an unsecured WiFi router and attached computer network.

  • How to indentify an unknown shared computer showing in finder?

For quite some time I've been seeing a computer show up under shared in finder.  It appears as macbook-2cd86c.  When I click on it is states that I'm connected as a "guest".  I can identify my husband's MacBook.  If it helps to know, we both connect to the internet wirelessly and use AT&T UVerse.  I thought that maybe it be the name of the router, but we've changed it a few times and the name of the unknown macbook has remained the same.  We also both have iphones that sync to our respective computers.  Our network is WPA protected.  How can I indentify this unknown computer?

how do I find out the the number of the MAC address on my husband's Mac?
Applications -> Utilities -> System Profiler
On the left side select "Network"
On the top Right side select "Airport"
In the bottom Right look for "MAC Address"
Unless your Husband is using "Built-in Ethernet", then select that entry in the Top Right panel.

  • New "Shared" Computer showing up?

    Hi,
All of a sudden, I have a new device showing up in my "shared" list on the left side of my open windows. I'm not sure where it came from or how to get rid of it. I've searched the threads here, but couldn't find the answer, so would appreciate any help.
I have a G4 Tower connected directly via ethernet to an Airport Extreme, using a DSL modem. I also have a MacBook that connects via Airport, and it also shows this unknown device. When I "Get info" on the device, it says it's a "PC Server" but no more info, and clicking on it shows two folders, "D" and "SharedDocs," and that I'm connected as: Guest.
I've never put any password on my network (we live in a pretty rural area, so never felt the need). But I'm wondering if it's a neighbor's computer showing up?
How do I get rid of this icon?
    Thanks,
    Mark

All I can think of, in my case, is that there was a neighbor that somehow got on my "Shared" list.
There is no "somehow." You neighbor was "stealing" your WiFi. Let's hope he was not smart enough to access your computer.
If you run the terminal command
    last
you will see all the logins.
I changed my Airport Network to WPA security (from no security at all), and the "rogue" device is no longer there.
You should be using WPA2 - even WPA has been compromised and WEP is a joke these days.
Eventually everyone will learn to use WPA2.

  • Unknown shared computer shows up

    Hi everyone,
I have used Mac OS X since version 10.1, so I know it quite well. However, since I have upgraded to 10.5, a computer shows up under "shared" in the Finder. It was never my intention to connect to any computer, but one named uw-uy155rr0hdft (a pc server) keeps showing up. Sometimes it disappears (after a reboot), but whenever I download something through Safari, it appears again.
I am worried that someone might have broken into my system (is this even possible on a Mac?), since I never wanted to connect to this PC in the first place. On the plus side, whenever I click on this shared computer, the connection fails. How can I remove this shared computer from my system? Thank you very much in advance.

This recently happened to me as well. "Computer2007" is what showed up along with another name. I'm behind 2 routers on a wired connection so I'm not sure what it could have been. I disconnected my modem, restarted my comp, changed my firewall options and enabled stealth mode. Nothing shows up now.

  • Spotlight "Show all in Finder" not working

    Hello
I have a mac book pro 2.7 Ghz i& with 16 GB RAM
    1) Whenever I search for something in spotlight, when I click on "Show all in Finder", nothing happens
Also, When I check the preferrences, I have some yellow triangles for the keyboadr shortcut
I've reindex everything but same issues comes up.
    2) Also, it seems that it only searches on local drive, not on my external drives as well, even though they are also indexed.
    Thank you

Got me stumped there.  My understanding (limited) is that the Apple Events daemon works for a while when freshly launched, but for reasons unknown it gets bolloxed after a certain number of calls.  No error messages appear in Console, which makes it especially hard to track down.  If yours gets hosed immediately, that's not the usual pattern.
iPhoto and iTunes use Apple Events quite a lot.... if you have either of those apps running, you might see what happens without them.  Failing that, see what happens when no applications are running.  Finally, see what login items are being fired up (System Preferences => Users and Groups => Login Items) and disable those.
This bug only crops up on a small number of Macs, and as far as I know nobody's been able to track down what triggers it.

  • I am running OSX 10.7 and a shared computer shows up on my Finder list. How do I delete it?

When I bought my Mac Air in 2012, I transferred all my windows data to my Mac Air after I installed Parallels. Windows has run perfectly since then.  However, why does the name of my old PC show up in my Shared list of computers on my Wi-Fi? Since it doesn't exist, how can I delete that shared name?

Apparently, it does exist somewhere. Perhaps in Parallels. You transferred an old Windows system into Parallels, so it may just be showing that as an available server via Parallel's configuration.

  • Unknown computer shows up in Finder, am I hacked?

H - got home tonight and notice a new Mac Book Pro icon under Shared in Finder. It is named "Lupin3d's Mac Book Pro" and it is "Not Connected". I don't see any option to connect to it.
I have a Mac Pro tower named "Mac" and I am certain no Mac Book Pro laptop has ever knowingly been on my network. There is a Windows machine also on the network but not named like that.
We live in an apartment building so this could be a Mac Book Pro in some other apartment in the building. We have wireless which has WEP enabled and a very long gibberish password.
My Mac Pro has bluetooth enabled for the mouse. I did not have Firewall enabled on my Mac Pro as we sit behind router NAT firewall so didn't think it was needed.
How is it possible this foreign MBP appears in my Shared list under my Finder window?
Am I compromised? Should I be concerned? I don't see how this Lupin3d MBP could possibly be on my machine unless it had gained access to my local network (having hacked WEP on the router?) which just seems really unlikely. Is there some easier way one Mac can connect to another without being on the same local network?
This is my first Mac, so please forgive the newbie questions, I'm not entirely familiar with attach vectors in Mac world. All advice gratefully received. thanks!

    hi KT
thank you very much for replying
I ran who and it just shows my user name logged in twice (once for console, about the time i rebooted last yesterday, and once just now when i fired up Terminal). However I checked iTunes and yes, I have it set to Look for Shared Libraries. Do you think perhaps that is why I can see this unknown machine?
If it is iTunes, I'm still curious to know how my Mac can see the other Mac, when there is no network in common?
thanks again for your reply, i appreciate it

  • IPod shows up in finder, not in iTunes.

Alright, so I've got a 40GB 4G iPod. I originally used it with a PC, but recently upgraded the harddrive and RAM of an old 466 GHz clamshell iBook and am using that as my primary computer. Transfering my music came with its own problems, but they have been smoothed out with time. After I got the music onto my mac hard drive, I completely wiped my iPod and then resynced it with the Mac. It worked great, and I have been able to update the iPod at least 5 times since, just by connecting it to the computer via Firewire. (I realize that I am now trying to do it via USB, maybe that would make a difference?) Anyway, I plugged the iPod in today (USB) and it didn't show up in iTunes. It was available in the Finder and appeared on the Desktop, but iTunes didn't see it at all. Any suggestions?

Alright, so connecting it via Firewire fixed the problem. However, this isn't optimal, because I use my Firewire cable for my dock, which is connected to my stereo, and I only update my iPod once or twice a week and with only one or two albums, so the slowness of the USB isn't an issue. So how do I make the USB work?

  • Another shared computer showing up on my computer

Hello - a couple of days ago, I used AirPort to go online. Usually, as soon as I shut down Airport, all of the Shared networks get shut down as well, however, there is still one network showing under 'Shared', and I am completely off Airport. It says the computer name, then 'Connection Failed'. How can I get rid of this? Thanks!

I did disconnect from Wi-Fi, and I also clicked on Open Network Preferences, then turned it off from there. I've never seen this before, so I was concerned... is there another way to 'get rid' of it? Thanks!

  • Internet connection slower even though TC is not part of wireless network!

How can this be? I connected TC to my iMac by ethernet cable to do the initial backup of my hard drive. The backup has been complete now for a number of days. What really mystifies me is the slower connection speed (I have cable) even when TC is NOT backing up, i.e., even between the hourly backups when TC isn't running.
I notice the slower speeds mostly via Safari. There is now a noticeable lag time between when I click on a URL and when the page loads. It's intermittent, but sometimes, it's so bad,mI havevto stop the loading of the page and try reloading the page. Usually, this pushes it through.
I never had this problem prior to connecting TC to my iMac.
I also have the most current firmware installed for TC, Airport Utility, etc.
Can anyone explain this phenomenon? I was planning to set up a dual network with TC and now I'm not so enthusiastic.
PS Have been reading through the threads here and came across one that reported a problem with TC and their 2.4 GHz phone? Could this be part of my problem? Even though TC isn't connected to my wireless network?
An additional question: isn't TC a 5 GHz device? Why would a 2.4 GHz device interfere with the 5 GHz TC?
    Message was edited by: WildBill

The default radio mode for the TC is 802.11 n operating in the 2.4 GHz mode, but if one has a 5 GHz iMac, one would b able to choose the 5v GHz option?
You would choose the radio mode, using the AirPort Utility, to change to the appropriate 5 GHz radio band to meet your wireless network requirements. If your iMac is "n" enabled, it should be able to both discover the TC's 5 GHz network, but also connect to it.
Also, regarding a previous post on this thread, have you personally used the OpenDNS's DNS servers? Did it make a significant difference? How were the ads?
Yes, I am currently using this service with several of my computers, both Macs and PCs. In most cases I get better performance (as far as locating and accessing web pages) and better stability than when using my ISP's DNS servers. You may find a similar experience. As far as ads, the only "ads" I get is when I either type in an incorrect URL or the site does not exist. You would then get a default message page with a OpenDNS banner.

  • Computer is unable to find hp photosmart 7510 on network.

Windows Vista unable to detect HP Photosmart 7510 during new installation.  The printer is connected to the same network as the computer.  The computer is wired to the network and the printer is wireless.  I have downloaded the driver and other software from the website with no improvement.

    Hi,
During the installation process, it should ask you: can you see the antenna symbol on the printer AND the signal strenght. Did you see those and click yes ? The IP address should also display on the printer control panel. Last night, I installed my 7510 printer to one of my Windows 8 laptop and it was very easy, like walking in a park.
    Regards.

  • Lion server shows up in Finder "Shared" section but won't connect

My Lion server iMac shows up both on my home LAN and from work in the Finder Shared section.
Other Shared servers show up (just Lion not Lion Server) and work fine, as usual.
When clicking on the Lion server icon the Finder tries to connect and then is unable (no password entered).  Connect As doesn't do anything.  Also, removed the original entry in Keychain so there's no password every requested nor given, just fails.
    Any ideas ?

Well, after much fumbling, I checked out ifelix' site again, and the trick was to select "shared" instead of "open" in Authentication Mode on the PC. I am not sure what the setup on my PC is now, but it works, and thats the main thing
