Shared Devices Don't Drop After Disconnect

I fixed a double NAT issue by sacrificing my WNDR3700 router and turning it into nothing but an Access Point behind my Westell 9100em FiOS MOCA modem (LAN to LAN).
The problem is that now, *shared devices are hanging on the the network after they disconnect.* For instance after a reboot, my iMac renamed itself to 'iMac (2).' If I bootcamp into Windows7 and then boot back to OS X, the Windows 7 drive continues to appear as a shared device.... My gripe is about it changing my iMac name - not nice. My network includes ipods, iphones, Macs, PS3, PC, Sony BR player and DNS-323 NAS.
It is important to have a gigabit LAN/dual radio WIFI and 'back to my mac' functionality. The 9100em modem/router doesn't support gigabit ethernet or N wireless and 'back to my mac' will not work behind a double NAT. Figuring out how to bridge the 9100em has been exhausting and fruitless....
Does anyone have any insight? Terminal command to force confirmation of shared devices perhaps?
Thanks

Interestingly, last night I watched a podcast through to the end. Then I went to watch it again and the Apple TV asked if I wanted to resume, after I selected resume, the final fraction of a second played and it was done. I tried that a couple times and each time the same thing happened. So, it seems that the Apple TV is just not registering that it has played the final blip of a podcast, at least with shared podcasts.

  • Device Group Profile Drops after changes are saved

Why do Device Group Profiles drops after applying a change? Some will get it no problem but some lose the profile thus losing network connectivity then requiring manual intervention.

Thanks to all who replied, however..
If the settings were stored int he CPL file ( which would be very odd but there it is ) I would expect that I could create a CPL file with the settings I want on one computer, and copy them to the same folder on another computer whose settings I want to standardize in the domain, however, this does not appear to be the case. I copied the entire ..\Program Files\Quicktime folder from one computer which had the settings I wanted, to another computer which didn't. The settings did not follow the copied Quictime folder and contents, so, with all respect and gratitude due to those who replied, I don't think settings are stored in the CPL file or any other file in the Quicktime folder.
In any case, I don't really care where they are stored, I just need a way to propagate a single set of settings across multiple computers in a domain. I've never run across an application before that was so reistant to this type of thing...
    Thanks again

  • After 10.5.6, Time Capsule shared volumes don't remount after wake

I've noticed than since upgrading to 10.5.6, the system will not properly autoremount a time capsule volume when I wake from sleep.
Sometimes the system reconnects, other times it doesn't. This used to always remount in the previous release.
    Has anyone else seen this?

I am having the same problem. I am running 10.5.6 and my Airport Utility doesn't show my time capsule when I start the app. I can find the network, but the device doesn't show up. I can restart and it still doesn't show up. If I leave it running for several hours, it somehow fixes itself. Once it goes to sleep, the network shows up but the airport utility can't find the time capsule. Jeez. I have had nothing but trouble since I installed 10.5.6. I have tried reinstalling 10.5.6 again and again, no help.

  • Right USB Port stops working after disconnecting device since 10.9.2

    Hi,
Since updating to 10.9.2 the right USB port on my MBA stops working after diconnecting a device (tested: external hard drive, USB flash drive, USB HSPA Modem). The only way to get the port recognizing the device on that port is to do a restart. If the device is connected from starting the MBA it works fine, if I then eject the drive and reinsert it or a different USB device the device doesn't get recognized. The devices do get power, my WD passport ultra spins up just fine, the USB HSPA modem also indicates it's working (with signal) but nothing shows up in finder or diskutility. If the modem is connected from start (and thus working) and then disconnect from the internet but not remove the drive I can reconnect to the internet. The problem only occurs after disconnecting the device. The port becomes inactive. The left USB port works as expected.
    Steps I've taken:
    Disk Persmission
    PRAM
    SMC
    Reapplied the 10.9.2 update
    Sent feedback to Apple

It's an Apple Pro keyboard and mouse, the dongle is
plugged into the Mac and not the keyboard. The same
set-up is, and has been working on all our other
    Macs.
The sleep issue sounds interesting- hum, maybe...
Is your keyboard plugged into one of the USB connections on an Apple monitor? If so, you may want to change that connection to one that is on the G5 itself. My monitor came with a warning note indicating that problems will likely occur if the keyboard is connected to the monitor.
I also had a problem with the automatic sleep function. After much trouble-shooting and a logic board replacement, it was concluded that coming out of the automatic sleep function with any USB device active would freeze the entire USB bus. After disabling automatic sleep in system preferences, I've had no freezing problems. My machine works fine with the manual sleep function in the Apple Menu.

I believe if you updated your Apple TV, you need iTunes 11 to make it work.

After loading Maverick iTunes will not launch.  I get an error code: -45054.  I am the administrator and have no groups or guests.  Sharing options don't fix this.  Also Fetch will not launch, I get error code: SSL error 9807.  These worked perfectly before installing Maverick.  Also everything that loads, all programs, take twice as long to load.  I have MacKeeper and have cleaned and discarded all the garbage.

Remove "MacKeeper" as follows. First, back up all data.
"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

  • After upgrading to Yosemite I cannot see my other iMac at home (note I am at work) in the Finder window shared devices.  Note my iMac at home is connected to an airport extreme (as is my work iMac) and I can see both airport extreme.

Aftger I upgraded to Yosemite I cannot see my iMac at home from my work (i.e in Finder window under shared devices).  Note both my work and home iMac are connected to time capsules and I can see both of those time capsules but I cannot see either iMac from the other location.  My guess is that the time capsule is blocking the connection to the iMac.  One last comment occasionally (5% of the time) my iMac does magically appear in the shared Finder window but this is extremely rare.  Any help????

Just discovered this one myself.  OK, this may sound silly but place your cursor next to the word "Shared" on the finder sidebar.  The "hidden" command "Show" will magically appear.  Clicking that will display your other network attached devices.
This appears to be a new "feature" that some freaking genius thought was some how "Cool".   My only assumption is that Apple programers expect users to randomly move their cursor around the screen in hopes of finding some critical function like looking for an easter egg in their favorite game.

  • Video constantly drops after screen sharing

Im on a brand new laptop running windows 8 just bought less than a month ago and the first thing I did when I got this thing was downloaded skype, its versaion 7.6. Before this, on my desktop and older laptops, Ive never had any problems. As of either this version of skype or this laptop (which I couldnt assume it would be the laptop when its brand new, but who knows) any time I am in a video call and screen share, the video will drop after roughly 10 - 30 seconds. Consistantly. First it shows whoever I am talking to's video drop, then mine. The call remains and we can reinitiate video, but it just keeps dropping every few seconds. It will go on until the call is closed and remade. It is quite annoying. I would like to get an older version of skype (7.4 maybe?) and try it out there to see if its the version or not, but I cant find any links to them. If anyone has any idea what is causing this, or has a link to an actual 7.4 download, Id appreciate it.

  • DAQ devices don't show up in LabVIEW Measurement IO after loading 2014 DS2, uninstalling 2014 DS2, and then reinstalling 2013 DS1.

DAQ devices don't show up in Measurement I/O. I installed LabVIEW ver 2014 DS2 Developer suite and my application no longer worked. I then uninstalled ver 2014 DS2 Developer suite and re-installed ver 2014 DS1 Developer suite which installs as LabVIEW 2013. Now none of the DAQ VIs are present in the Measurement I/O. I have uninstalled all NI software, and deleted that NI software that did not uninstall. LabVIEW ver 2014 DS1 Developer suite installs normally, but I get an "unknown error" when trying to install the DAQ drivers from the CD, and the Device Drivers CD keeps looping with a message indicating "Currently exectuing License Manager."

  • The Strange Case of the Missing Shared Devices...

    Dear Forum,
I am currently having intermittent trouble with the connection of shared devices.
The network consists of a MBP, Qnap TS109 and a Canon printer hooked up via LAN to a WAG200G. The Qnap serves music to a PS3 (WLAN) and the Mac and also serves as a TimeMachine back up device.
The problem is that every so often I lose my Shared Devices in the Finder side-bar. They just disappear.
I have managed to reconnect by playing with the Network connections preferences, but as I suspected (due to exhausting the permutations), this solution has come to an end and now I cannot urge them to reappear (unless I restart (which is a solution, but not an entirely satisfactory one)…
All devices have been set to use static IP address (none conflict).
The Mac’s settings are as follows:
    TCP/IP-
Configure IPv4 Manually: then my IP address.
Subnet and router are both correct as I can connect to the Qnap & WAG admin pages and internet (I’m not sure if that is a correct test of these settings, but the numbers are correct).
    Configure IPv6: Off.
Under DNS : I have entered both DNS servers as per the instructions of the ISP (I have been with them for years and these are correct).
WINS- (I don’t know what this is but…)
NETBIOS Name: the name of my Mac (All uppercase (don’t know why, but looks definitely windows (ish))
    Workgroup: (blank)
    WINS Servers (blank),
802.1X & Proxies: everything is per the default setting as I have never touched anything in these options.
    Ethernet-
    ID: My Mac MAC
    Configure: Auto
Speed, Duplex and MTU have never been touched, but I am assuming that Auto covers these.
Under Network (System Preferences), then Location: Auto, then next to Status: Connected (currently active and correct IP)
The WAG is the only thing on this mini network that sets DHCP, I could change this to disable as everything has it’s own Static IP, but is there any need?
(I hope I am getting the terminology correct and not inadvertently creating confusion.)
The PS3 sees the Twonky server in the Qnap, so I am not sure if that is an issue, it doesn’t appear to be.
    So why the missing devices?
None of this would actually be a problem if it was not for the fact that once the Qnap disappears from the Finder side-bar, TimeMachine does not back up (yet I can connect via a browser to the Qnap, even if it is not present in the side-bar).
The problem is I feel as though my thinking is a bit blinkered as I am only concentrating on the Network connection aspect, yet I am afraid I am not entirely sure what else I should be considering. That is to say what is causing the Mac hooked up to a perfectly adequate connection/ functioning network to suddenly cause it to drop the devices, yet retain connection by other means?
Unfortunately a forum member had exactly the same problem but sadly removed the query from open questions.
It goes without saying (but there is no harm in me saying it anyway), but any help would be appreciated.

    Bump
This recently happened to me as well, actually it's happened for awhile, and only recently have begun to try to find the answers. Did you ever find out what happened?
Also seems like this post: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11367180
But that has no answers posted either. Perhaps a reformat and stick with 10.6.2, which is what I think the last version the "Shared Devices" automatically showed without deliberately mounting a network drive.
My situation is pretty much the same, "Shared Devices" do not automatically show up on the left sidebar. If I know the IP address or netbios name, I can mount network hard drives: Command + K and smb://ipaddress
My Computers, I have an iBook G4, which used to automatically pop up; a Windows7 computer that used to automatically show; and an Ubuntu 10.04 computer that would show up as well for screen sharing and smb.
Possible culprits include: netbios/smb problems, mDNSresponder/Bonjour problems, other networking config. No settings permutations have fixed the problem.

  • Wireless Connection drops after a few moments

    Hello everbody!
Background: I have a cheap laptop with a windows only ACPI module, so I have to set acpi=off at all times anyway. I tried Ubuntu, which has the wireless problem too, but instead of repairing something bloated like Ubuntu, I now found my way to Arch to make it right from the beginning.
If the wireless problem gets solved, I want to go on installing the nvdia driver, maybe configure xmonad. (I want to try KDE4 for fun too though, eyecandy you know ) Simple working desktop without getting my laptop heated up like windows does.
The problem: I set up my wireless connection like the wiki says:
-The original SSID was "FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7270 Annex A" which I tried to escape with \ and using 'ssid'. This wouldn't work at all, if you have any explanation for that I'd love to know it. I changed the SSID to something without spaces and special characters and the connection would work. But it would be nice to change it back to the original.
-So it works now. Fine, I thought. But the connection drops after a few moments and I have to "killall wpa_supplicant dhcpcd" and start them again to make it work again. For a few moments only. So I went through the logfiles and found error messages which Google wouldn't help me solve on my own. Now I'm asking the Arch specialists here
Note: Using the partedmagic livecd, the wireless connection works out of the box and absolutely stable. I believe even a bit faster than under windows. So it has to work perfectly, I just don't know how to make it in Arch yet.

Thanks in advance to anyone helping me! I really really want to get Arch going. It's ideal for this laptop, no wasting of disk space, ressource friendly, the temperature doesn't go up as much with less cpu usage I guess..
I've written quite a bit, but hopefully this makes it easier for you to help me! I've included all I thought which could be useful.
    Greetings from Germany,
    Fenris

The easiest solution might be to setup NetCfg somehow with your wifi card and access point.  Have you tried that?  Can you find your card's chipset on the wiki?(chances are that your particular chipset will need a firmware put into /lib/firmware.  Again that's found on the wiki on the NetCfg or Wifi page, I forget which sorry.)  Those are two places where I'd look for good information.
By the way, your rc.conf is way out of date.  You should look at updating it by using the recent rc.conf.pacnew file that you'll find in the /etc directory.

  • Why do we get a number next to a shared device in finder sidebar?

Does anyone know how to stop the appearance of a number next to a shared device number in the Finder sidebar window?
    OSX Yosemite, version 10.10.2
    Thanks.

There are several possible causes for this behavior.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local". Resolve the name conflict by renaming one or more of them in the Sharing preference pane.
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is a bug in OS X that may only affect some models. You can avoid it as follows:
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. If the router is an Apple device, it may need to be restarted.
    7. A third-party Bonjour device on the network is malfunctioning. Finding out which is a process of elimination.
    8. There is more than one DHCP server on the network. Typically, there would be two or more wireless access points configured to act as routers.
    9. See this support article.
    10. Back up all data. Make notes of your settings in the Network preference pane.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "SystemConfiguration" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password.
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. You will need to recreate the network settings.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • 7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect.

7th gen iPod nano won't turn on after disconnect. I loaded some new music, synced and ejected correctly. screen went black on unplug. Waited, did the button trick, didn't work. plugged it back in & it is recognized immediately. restored, resynced & ejected again. same thing-black screen w/ no response. Charged it overnight. ejected, screen then went to language setting. OK for English, eject & back to black on unplug. Switched ports for cable, tried eject thru PC...all resulting in dead nano after unplug. I really don't want to charge into the store & take it out on the poor kid who will catch the brunt of my frustration. anyone have a suggestion?

    Hello Marie,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was not powering on.  I found an article for the 6th generation iPod nano that has steps you can take for an issue like this (the only difference for the 7th generation iPod nano is the steps you will take for the reset. I included the steps to reset a 7th generation iPod nano below):
Will not turn on or screen remains dark
Connect iPod to power for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has enough charge to allow iPod to turn on.
If iPod does not turn on after ten minutes, try resetting the device while it is still connected to power. Reset the iPod by holding down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for at least eight seconds or until you see the Apple logo appear.
If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
If the screen remains dark and will not turn on, then your iPod may need service.
You can find the full article here:
iPod nano (6th generation): Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3474
All the steps apply to the 7th generation except the steps for the reset.  To reset a 7th generation iPod nano, use these steps:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for six seconds, or until the screen goes dark. The Apple logo appears after a few seconds, and then the Home screen. You may need to repeat this step.
I got these steps from this tutorial, which may also help with your iPod not appearing in iTunes:
iPod nano not appearing in iTunes

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Unknown SHARED Device?

    Hi,
Just recently i've noticed that a Device named "Thomson" has appeared when I open the HD and it is the only device listed in the SHARED list (inbetween the DEVICES and PLACES lists)
It's icon is a PC type Monitor and i'm not familiar with the name Thomson and i've never connected to anything outside of my house in the country for this past few months. So I don't know where it has appeared from unless my wee sister has downloaded a virus type file for a Mac whilst playing online games?
I've never herd of a Mac Virus so I don't think my problem's threatening, but It shouldn't be there so i'm concerned.
Right clicking it only gives 2 options - "Open" or "Get Info".
Opening it reveals that i'm "connected as a guest".
Get info reveals that it's a "PC Server".
Any ideas as I cannot disconnect or delete this SHARED Device.

    dherron wrote:
    No neighbors named Thomsons though
No one needs to have the name Thomson for this to happen. Thomson is the name of a major electronics manufacturer. Similar to how the world has a billion wireless access points named "Linksys" because of the default network name of the Linksys wireless router, you may be seeing a "Thomson"-manufactured device on your network. Do you or any of your neighbors have any network-connected devices made by Thomson? Could be a wireless router, a networked printer or scanner, a modem, a wireless game adapter, a network extender, a media server...
I just Googled "Thomson wireless" and it turns out they make a whole range of wireless routers as seen here. It is even possible that your own modem is made by Thomson but branded for whoever sold it to you. There have been some reports of people's wireless gateways turning on in the Shared column. This makes sense because a wireless access point would probably ask you to log in before changing settings.

  • Help! Ipod nano won't turn on after disconnecting!

Okay I've had my Ipod nano for like 3 weeks. I've used it once. It worked fine when I first got it and after my battery ran out I haven't used it for about a week. When I got it back I hooked it up to my computer and updated the stuff on it as well as let it charge. After is says to safely disconnect, I disconnect it but it automatically turns off and won't turn back on. I've tried resetting it and nothing works. I thought the battery was dead but I've left it plugged in (not only USB on my computer but also tried an outlet) and it never completely charged. I've even left it plugged in overnight (well over the 4 hours it's supposed to charge). I have no idea what to do (It also took like at least a full day to completely charge the first time I've had it)

ipod wouldnt turn on . left it for 24 hours. when I got home from school the next day
it tried to sync but my playlist did not exist..it even showed the folder in windows
After trying various USB ports and seeing an Apple Icon, and "connect to power low battery"
I even requested a warranty replacement... and apparently you throw out the box they send to cancel. I wish I could be courteous and let them know
    So in short
    PROBLEM;
==IPOD Won't Power on when you press the power button==
(FIRST OF ALL , I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO NOT TRY TO OPEN THE IPOD UP,
you will probably scratch or damage the beautiful iPod .. when it will be perfectly fine 24 hours later...)
    Try:
RESET, and plug in to itunes and restore..

I guess my actual story will make you believe that THIS SOLUTION actually works.
    "Let the iPod battery drain
In rare cases, iPod might get into a state in which it needs to be drained completely before it can be reset. If iPod didn't turn on after you reset it, follow these steps:
    1. Disconnect iPod from all power sources and leave it disconnected for about 24 hours.
    2. Reconnect iPod to the Apple iPod Power Adapter or computer and reset it.
I even tried the iPod on 2 computers and it was sort of detecting the serial # in Windows
    but mostly freezing up windows.
    4. " Let iPod's battery drain"
Was the solution for my iPod 3rd generation.
So now that the problem was fixed, I guess iPod is so terrible after all
Just don't drop your iPod get it a nice case
it took from 9pm December 2,2008 to about Dcember 2,2008 6:45pm
roughly 20 hours.. so this morning when I left I pressed the button and it wouldn't turn on
I thought maybe the battery was knocked loose but the battery was just so low or something
To prevent this problem I guess whenever you ipod is low battery, charge it before it gets dangerously low
As sad as it is to wait like 24 hours without your iPod just to pray that the problem is the battery or something and then it will power on..
When it actually does power on you would see the apple Icon
== When it was all said and done==
I didn't really need to use "restore" option, i think itunes resynced what it needed.
And thanks to this I upgraded to Itunes 8 .. which I was too lazy to do before
    ==STILL DOESNT WORK?==
If you bought it less than a year ago... Warranty..
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
Enter your Serial# and country and it will be located at the back of your iPod under where it says 8GB or whatever (at least for iPod Nano 3rd generation)
I always like posting solutions, so that someone like me can benefit from it.
It is my understanding that if you do send in your iPod they don't care about the USB cord or headphones that came with it, so you just ship the iPod itself
