Shared Discovery - Windows 7 Firewall & Defence block Airtunes in iTunes 10

Just sharing my discovery today
When I updated to iTunes 10 a few days ago on a few Windows 7 x64 machines, my airport express speakers and appletv no longer listed in the speaker dropdown in itunes 10
Switched Windows 7 Firewall & Defence off and Comodo Internet Security Firewall & Defence+ on instead (in training mode) and they instantly all came back
Hope this helps someone out there

Thank you Steve for your comments
I have been participating in a bunch of threads on the same issue
You are pointing in the right direction, though I am behind a NAT'd modem router with its own defence, Windows ain't as simple as OS X! So I reluctantly use the security software to protect from my own mistakes with rogue sites or files
Here's yesterdays post elsewhere:

iTunes 10 (Windows 7 x64) seems to have problems with remote/multiple speakers over network with airtunes/airplay (Airport Expresses & AppleTV).
I know its not the hardware, as my MacBook Pro on the same network with iTunes 10 works properly with airtunes/airplay to my two airport express speakers and appletv speakers.
Have done many tests with multiple Windows 7 machines (ethernet connected) with firewall/defense security settings off and full itunes and bonjour passthrough (mDNSResponder.exe).
Also when I go into iTunes 10 preferences and switch off and on "Look for remote speakers" the speakers drop down completely disappears never to be seen again on two separate machines (at home network and work network).
Have had very nice Airtunes/play/port Express and Apple TV speaker experience for some time with these machines before iTunes 10 - Hence I have 2 expresses and an appletv at work and an express at home for remote speaker system and windows 7, with my Macbook pro floating between the two locations
I am stumped
It feels like iTunes gives up on looking for remote speakers and changes a windows registry entry for the service to be permanently off (hence the total disappearance of the drop down remote speaker selector)

Just got the functionality back by completely uninstalling Comodo Internet Security (Version 4.1.150349.920 and 5.0) and using Microsoft's own Security Essentials software for Windows 7 instead

  • Windows 7 firewall blocking airplay after allowing

    Hi guys and gals,
    Windows 7 firewall is blocking airplay from my PC (iTunes) to my Apple TV and also stopping me using my iPhone (remote) to control iTunes.
    If I turn the firewall off all is well with the world but once I reinstate it everything stops working again.
    I've set up incoming and outgoing rules for iTunes and ports TCP 3689 and UDP 5353 as per guides on these forums, i've also selected iTunes in the 'allow a program...' list.
    Everything is running the latest version, I've reset and updated Apple TV and re installed iTunes.
    Help me please as its driving me mad!

    Hmm, not sure I completely understand now. What exactly simultaneously should mean in this context? The thing is that it seems there's no chance in getting the connection to work when I first turn on the client on my Windows computer. The other way (starting on my Linux computer) it works just fine, and I am able to connect from my Windows to my Linux anytime.
    Also I'm not sure that this is the problem, cause it seems that same problem apply to connection to other computers as well (however this impression is based on a testing with just a very few tries, so I'll try to test it more soon).
    Thanks for the explaining anyway!

  • Oracle12c SQL*NET blocked by Windows 2008 firewall - what is the correct solution?

    Hello,
    I have a question with regards to the SQL*NET traffic being blocked by the Windows 2008 firewall. This document shows that disabling the firewall can resolve the problem:
    https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/DocumentDisplay?_afrLoop=166773506396122&id=1472931.1&displayIndex=13&_afrWindowMode=0&_adf.ctrl-state=o4dq0hlih_112
    Is this really the solution?
    From what I understand from other documents is that just enabling port 1521 will not resolve any issues, as SQL*NET can use redirection to other random ports. That is probably the reason why the Oracle installation does not alter any firewall settings.
    What other methods do people use to connect a client to a DB server?
    This document shows what other methods to use, but who uses them?
    https://support.oracle.com/epmos/faces/DocumentDisplay?_afrLoop=166043735580557&id=68652.1&_afrWindowMode=0&_adf.ctrl-state=o4dq0hlih_78
    Does anyone use the Oracle Connection Manager for example?
    Thanks
    Richard

  • Windows Firewall has blocked Adobe Muse

    I open Adobe Muse for the first time and I'm trying to use it, after going thru some updates and questions I get Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this program. Does Adobe Muse need to have an Internet or network connection for anything at all before I publish? the Publisher is Unknown according to the alert I get from Windows. Do I need to check the box for Private networks or Public networks, I couldn't find anything related to it on Adobe Help and when I searched for Firewall on Adobe Muse Help I get results for other applications instead that I don't use like Flash Media Encoder.

    Yes, you would need to tick both the checkboxes and click Allow Access after that.
    Thanks,

  • Upload Ftp commands in C# program are blocked by Windows 7 firewall

    Hello everybody,
    I have developped a C# application which launches a Ftp command file.
    But I cannot upload the files.
    When I run the Ftp command file manually, it works.
    And when I disable the Windows 7 firewall for domain, the C# application works.
    Here is the Ftp command file :
    OPEN 100.100.100.100
    user usr_essai
    pwd_essai

    cd dir_essai
    mput "C:\Essai_Ftp\*.doc"
    quit
    And here is the Ftp log file when I try to run the C# application :

    I have tried to exclude some programs from the firewall.
    I have created out going rules for excluding "ftp" and "w3wp.exe" in the firewall.
    But none of these actions have made the C# application to work.
    Do you have an idea ?

    You could check this article, but it is about Firefox itself not having access.

  • Firewall is blocking SSH when it shouldn't be

    I had a [problem with SSH|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1990417&tstart=0] on my iMac not long ago where SSH was being blocked by the Leopard firewall, even though it is configured to allow it through. I have the firewall configured as "Set access for specific services and applications" and "Remote Login (SSH)" appears on the list automatically since Remote Login is enabled on the Sharing tab of System Prefs.
    The first time I had the problem I solved the problem by turning off the Leopard firewall ("allow all incoming") and then turning it back on again (in "specific services" mode). I thought it was just a one time glitch being the first time I'd ever tried getting SSH to work. After that it worked great until restarting my iMac yesterday when the firewall started blocking SSH again. Once again, turning off the firewall and then turning it back on again resolved the problem.
    Any ideas? Anyone had similar problems?

    Most routers thesedays even consumer routers have a stateful packet inspection firewall and also NAT.
    With NAT unless you specifically open ports from the router to your mac then the outside world cannot access any of the services on your mac.
    If you want to use SSH from the outside world then you would have to portforward tcp port 22 from the router to your mac. But this is not a problem if you use a strong password eg not a dictionary word or name or better still you can turn off password authentication in your ssh configuration and use public key access only.
    So if you have not opened up ports on the router then your application firewall is only preventing access from other computers on your local network.
    Call me paranoid, but I don't know anything about how solid the router firewall is, whereas I have much more confidence in the OS X firewall.
    If you are savvy enough to know about and how to use SSH then it should be really easy for you to find out how good your router's firewall is. Understanding a router's web interface is far less demanding than learning how to use SSH.
    In most cases you simply put the router's IP address into your web browser and you can see all of its services.
    But something you should be aware of it is not really incoming connections you should be concerned about. It is outgoing connections that require more control.
    For example if you were socially engineered by a website or elsewhere and they convinced you to install a trojan or spyware on your mac then your Mac's Application firewall would not stop these processes dialing out.
    Little Snitch from obdev is an application aware firewall that controls your outgoing connections and is far more useful than the mac's application firewall on a desktop computer behind a router.
    Apart from that, I'd really like to understand what's going on!
    Did you try nerowolfe's suggestion of creating a test user account and login in as that user and see if the problem is still there?

  • File Sharing With Windows

    Right this is annoying the **** out of me. I've enabled everything I should on my Mac to get it sharing with windows. I'm convinced I've broke my OSX, but there's clearly something I've missed which is stopping this from working that maybes someone else can see! So here we go
    Gone to system preferences, sharing
    -> Ticked file sharing
    -> Ticked share files over SMB
    -> Ticked my user
    -> Added what I want to share and gave permission to everyone as read/write for public folder.
    -> Gone to network preferences and setup the WINS server to the same group as my windows PC
    Just got the standard apple firewall running on my mac. I've tried disabling this and letting anything through.
    The problem im having is my windows laptop cant see my mac quite often. Sometimes it can, and when it can see my mac it only displays shared printers rather than any of my shared folders. The problem here is that I dont have any printers on my mac, and printer sharing is not enabled.
    Any idea why this isnt working? I've disabled windows firewall/any other firewall on my windows laptop. My windows laptop can happily access the FTP and HTTP on my Mac. Just has issues file sharing.
    I actually had this working a while ago for a day, then it's never worked since. I cant for the **** of it figure out why. I've gone through loads of tutorials to see if i've missed things. Some things have even told me to change a registry file in windows, which I've done to no success.
    Cheers in advance!

    WINDOWS NT 와 FIREWALL 관련
    ===========================
    (일반적으로 SQL*NET listener 가 1521 Port 를 사용한다고 가정)
    Windows NT 에서 Firewall 이 설치된 경우 1521 Port 를 열어주었다고
    하더라도 클라이언트에서 접속시 ORA-12203 error 가 발생하게 된다.
    이유는 아래의 그림과 같다.
    1. 클라이언트가 접속 시도를 한다.
    2. Listener 가 Redirect connect 를 하도록 한다.
    이때 주어지는 포트는 사용하지 않는 Random Port 이다.
    3. 클라이언트에서 재접속을 한다. (이때 사용하는 port 가 문제가 된다)
    그림을 잘 맞춰주세요.
    ------ <-------2-----2---- ---------
    |client| |listener |(port=1521)
    ------ --------1-----1----> ---------
    |
    ----------3-----3------> ---------
    | oracle |(port=xxxx)
    해결방법은 두가지가 있다.
    1. SQLNet proxy 가 포함된(Build into) Firewall 을 사용하는 것이다.
    먼저 SQLNet proxy 가 Listener 와 다른 포트를 이용해서 기동되어야 한다.
    (보통 1610 을 사용)
    아래 그림과 같이 접속이 가능하게 된다.
    firewall
    ||
    ------ <----2--------||-----2------ ---------
    |client| || |listener |(port=1521)
    ------ ----1------> proxy --1------>---------
    A \ /||\
    | -----3-------/ || \---3------>---------
    | || | oracle |(port=xxxx)
    ----------4---------||-----4----------------+
    2. 8.0.X 버전에서 지원되는 기능을 사용한다.
    레지스트리에 있는 USE_SHARED_SOCKET 이란 parameter 를 사용한다.
    Firewall 의 종류에 전혀 구애받지 않는다.
    Listener Port 만 열어주면 된다.
    Parameterm 의 Syntax 는
    USE_SHARED_SOCKET=TRUE
    이다.
    레지스트리에 각 DB version에 따라 아래와 같이 존재한다.
    \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE (Relases 8.0)
    \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME<#> (Release 8i )
    이 파라미터의 기능은 1521 Port 만을 사용하는 것이다.
    현재 session들이 살아있는 상태에서 listener가 stop 될 수는 있지만
    다시 start되기 위해서는 현 session들을 모두 닫아야 한다.

    Hi,
    How have you configured Windows Firewall rules on the Server?
    Would you please post out the log which indicates that the traffic was blocked?

  • Windows 7 firewall problem

    Hi,
    I'm trying to develop a test application for P2P communication via Cirrus and came up to following problem with my Windows 7 firewall:
    How is my app designed to work: The application generates key (initConnection) on one side, then I manually copy the key to the other machine and connect again. Init send stream and receive stream on both of them should make the communication available. Whole code is attached below, it's just some sample code I downloaded somewhere for testing purposes.
    #edit: you can check working copy of the application here: http://peskovi.cz/p2ptest/P2Pplugin.html
    My setup: I've got two computers in my local network (connected through cable to same switch), Windows and Linux. However it seems I'm having the same trouble connecting to distant computers as swell.
    My problem: It seems that Windows 7 is partially blocking my connection. The thing is, when I init the connection on Windows and then copy the generated code to Linux and connects there, connection's not working at all. However, when I do it the other way (init on Linux and copy generated code to Windows), everything works just fine. Also, when I turn off firewall on my Windows it works fine both ways too. I have several reasons to believe there might be something wrong with my app:
    1) The sample app on Adobe Labs (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cirrus/samples/) works just fine both ways.
    2) RTMFP should be bidirectional protocol right? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me, why would I be able to connect to existing connection, but I wouldn't be able to start a new connection? That should pretty much use the same resources (ports), shouldn't it?
    3) If this is just a common thing with Windows 7, it would mean Cirrus is pretty much unusable for me, but I haven't seen any posts about this anywhere, which is suspicious.
    I'm new to AS/Cirrus/flash so there might be something really noobie I'm missing, so I'd be very glad if there would be someone wiling to help me with any hints why is it not working, what should I do, or just explain to me that I have to deal with the fact that it simply cannot be done and (mainly) why.
    Thank you very much,
    Jan

  • SMB file-sharing only works if Firewall is Disabled

    On my Mac, I've turned on File Sharing, enabled SMB sharing, and set the firewall to "selected services and applications" (SMB is listed as a service in the firewall application list). I cannot connect to the Mac from a Windows XP machine.
    If I turn the firewall off, however, I can create a connection and transfer files from the PC client side. In addition, once I have established a connection I can then re-enable the firewall and continue transferring files.
    Has anyone else seen this?
    Jeff

    file sharing seems to be working... you will probably have to authenticate prior to beginning the file transfer though, so that is likely what is failing in the first instance.

  • Unable to connect to HP PSC1510 shared at Windows XP

    As the title suggests I've got a HP PSC1510 All-in-one printer attached by USB to a Windows XP Pro SP2 machine. The printer has been shared in Windows.
    I've tried following various articles on the Apple Support site, but nothing seems to work. I can't locate the printer on the network, and as a result I can't connect to it.
    Is there some trick that I am overlooking? Any help would be very welcome.

    There are two issues here - connection protocol and driver. For driver, look up your model here and install the recommended driver:
    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
    (You need a CUPS driver because HP's driver was written for USB only)
    Then follow this guide:

  • Connect Mac OS 10.6 to canon ip3600 shared on windows XP home

    I am trying to connect my Mac OS 10.6 to a canon ip3600 printer shared on windows XP home. I have read dozens of posts on this topic and tried dozens of solutions. Although the Mac will identify the printer and apparently connect, when I print nothing comes out of the printer. During my reading around the topic, I have come to the conclusion that my printer has a particularly troubled relationship with Macs. If there is anyone out there who has chosen the same configuration of products I would be extremely pleased to hear how they eventually established printing to the shared printer.

    Unfortunately it is not possible to use the Canon MF series from a Mac when the printer is being shared by Windows. This is due to limitations of Canon's UFR2 driver for OS X.
    But if your wireless router has an Ethernet port then you would be able to print from the Mac and from Windows if the MF4680 Ethernet port was connected to the Ethernet port of the wireless router. All the printer will require is an IP address, which the router can assign automatically (DHCP). If your wireless router does have an Ethernet port and you need information on how to set the MF4680 to DHCP then please reply.

  • Networking ~ File Sharing With Windows Vista

    Alright, I've browsed enough of the web and I've tried a lot to try and resolve this issue, but none of it has worked at all for me. Here's my scenario about as specific as it gets:
    I have a home private network consisting of two Windows Vista PCs, a HP Photosmart Printer, a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1, and an iPhone 5 running iOS 7.0.4. The network is routed through a Medialink MWN-WAPR300N router connected to a Time Warner Cable modem which goes to the Internet. My primary PC, the MacBook Pro, and the iPhone 5 all connect wirelessly; the other PC and printer connects via Ethernet. All devices connect to the Internet flawlessly, and they are all assigned a static LAN IP address through the router because I portforward to one of my PCs, and the router requires it. The network was originally configured using one of the PCs as a Private network under the default workgroup, "WORKGROUP". Everything else router-specific is automatic.
    Here's the problem: My MacBook and my primary PC do not communicate over the network at all. Both the MacBook and my primary PC can file share with the other PC connected via Ethernet, and they can both print just fine. After using LAN Scan v1.02 by Nutec Apps, LLC on my iPhone however, neither my primary PC nor the MacBook Pro shows up on the list of LAN devices. But that's not all, the MacBook Pro always recognizes the other PC via Ethernet in Finder, and the MacBook Pro can be found in both PC's Network list. However, when I try to connect to it via my primary PC, it says that "[My MacBook] is not a valid host name." What?
    To futher satisfy my curious mind, I set up a small Peer-to-Peer network between my primary PC and the MacBook Pro via Ethernet. Both devices instantly recognized each other and connected without any issues. I was able to transfer files at approximately 100mb/s and I was stoked. I then disconnected and tried to transfer over the network again, and there was nothing there. I have even done ping tests over the network to the MacBook Pro's LAN IP address, and it came back with no response.
    I've restarted both computers numerous times, played around with file sharing settings, set appropriate sharing permissions, disabled firewalls, enabled sharing for Windows on the MacBook Pro, enabled file sharing on the Windows PC, you name it. I'm sure there is a small fix that I may have overlooked, but I cannot figure out what the problem is for the life of me. Because the operation worked via Ethernet, and it's working wireless-to-Ethernet, but not wireless-to-wireless, I have a feeling that the problem is related to one or both of the wireless configurations.
    Thanks in advance for any help provided, if there is anything I missed I will be happy to proivde more details per request. This issues has been bugging me for weeks now and it's time I seeked professional help

    Alright, I am still having the problem and I have the results of the ifconfig command if it will be of any help to any Apple techies out there:

    The section in question is where it says bridge100 because the IP address listed under that section reads 192.168.2.1, as previously suggested. However another IP address is listed above it as 192.168.1.104, which is exactly what it should be as I have it assigned via DHCP in the router. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, because this is driving me crazy.
    PS: I apologize for the confusion. I made a typo in my previous post about my MacBook's LAN IP address. It should be 192.168.1.104, not 103. I can confirm that it is listed as *.104 in my router and it shows *.104 on the above ifconfig. Please ignore the *.103, thanks

  • HP All-in-One 2355 Shared from Windows PC - Cannot print from any Mac

    Hi all!
    I have a HP All-in-One 2355 printer. It is installed correctly on my Mac, and when I try to use it connected by USB, works fine.
    But the printer is all the time conected to a PC, where is installed to. The PC runs Windows XP, at is in the same Wireless network as my MacBook Pro. The printer is "shared" on this PC.
    When I search the HP 2355 with my MacBook throught wireless, I can find it. I see it if I going to Preferences Settings, Printers, Windows, Workgroup... Then I can add the printer, but I can't select any driver to asign, because the driver for HP All-in-One 2350 series don't appear.
    What can I do? I contacted with HP, but they tell me that they don't support sharing between Windows and Mac.
    Please, Help me!

    Install this three-part driver:
