Shared IDE disk for 2-node Oracle RAC

Hi,
I'd like to create a RAC installation of Oracle 10g with 2-nodes (2 virtual machines). I have VMware Workstation ver 5.0 installed on my PC with one IDE HDD.
My question is how to configure VMware shared disk to be able to create database files on OCFS disk ?
I tried to use VMware Cookbook for creating this environment but there is installation of only of one node and one disk - /dev/hdd - what about the second node ? There is no mention of raclocal2...
Thanks for any advice
Standa

Hi Standa!
If you want to use OCFS for this you need the latest and greatest OCFS and this only works on RHEL4.
With an IDE disk this will probably not work. I have a RAC on my VMWare (4.5.2) with two nodes for the RAC and one node that offers a NFS drive. When I have some time I will try this with the OCFS rel 2.

  • ASM instances on 2 node Oracle RAC 10g r2  on Red Hat 4 u1

    Hi all
I'm experiencing a problem in configuring diskgroups under +ASM instances on a two node Oracle RAC.
I followed the official guide and also official documents from metalink site, but i'm stuck with the visibility of asm disks.
I created fake disks on nfs with Netapp certified storage binding them to block device with the usual trick "losetup /dev/loopX /nfs/disk1 " ,
run "oracleasm createdisk DISKX /dev/loopX" on one node and
"oracleasm scandisks" on the other one.
With "oracleasm listdisks" i can see the disks at OS level in both nodes , but , when i try to create and mount diskgroup in the ASM instances , on the instance on which i create the diskgroup all is well, but the other one doesn't see the disks at all, and diskgroup mount fails with :
ERROR: no PST quorum in group 1: required 2, found 0

    any help would be appreciated
    thanks a lot.

The author of the page uses the h2n tool to generate the DNS configuration files. The examples listed are not examples of the actual DNS configuration files like named.conf, etc., but samples of the configuration files to use with the h2n tool. Perhaps the instructions will work if followed more precisely.

  • Set up Virtual IP and Private IP for each node in RAC installation

I am new to Oracle 10G RAC installation, based on the documentation, I need to assign a public IP, Virtual IP, private IP for each node, I know how to assign public IP for each node, I can assign the IP from the router, but I don't know how to assign the Virtual IP and private IP, since the private network is only connected by a switch, the switch is not able to assign IP to server, should I just go to the host file
    %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
of each node to put IP in the file? what else should I do? I already read through the document from Oracle "Oracle Real Application Clusters, Quick Installation Guide for Oracle Database Standard Edition 10g Release 1 for window".

I am still keep thinking why each node need a virtual IP address? if each mode has a virtual IP, which IP address the client can be specified? I have multiple application servers work as clients.

  • Shared FRA disk between Primary and Standby RAC

    Hello all,
I need some clarification.  Can a ASM +FRADG shared between RAC 2 nodes 11gR2 Primary and RAC 2 nodes 11gR2 Physical Standby Database in order to use it for backup and recovery on both databases.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
If you are looking this document:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e18951/asmcon.htm#OSTMG94055
Then I understand it that you can use ASM diskgroups only inside same Oracle Clusterware.
So if you have two separate RAC clusters (two separate Oracle Clusterware) then you cannot share ASM between those.
And I don't think it would be wise even if it would be possible.
This is because if one database will fill up your FRA disks then both RAC databases are hold (if you are putting your archivelogs in the FRA).
Also disk/diskgroup maintenance jobs might be difficult in that kind of configuration.

  • Hardware for ORACLE RAC.

    hi
my company decided to migrate from Oracle Single instance to Oracle RAC . now we have to choice a hardware for it . I want to know which hardware is better for mid-size oracle rac database ? HP4300 (lefthand ) or EVA 4400 . the first one is cheaper and support 10g switches but the second one just support Fibre Channel .
by the way , i want to know that does HP P4300 support oracle rac database ?
    thx in adv.
    Edited by: user9233061 on Mar 7, 2011 12:59 AM

    hi
basically every machine can run Oracle RAC. It's a matter of tuning how well it performs.
Also operating systems implies some issues and demands.
The main HW issue with RAC is shared storage, so if you use disk array that can work with all RAC nodes, you're OK.
You can configure it on direct connections (SAS) or network (iSCSI) or fiber channels. With or w/o redundancy.
    Go for it.
Ask also the HP consultant for more details and opinions how they view the specific HW from database point of view.

  • How to configure sun application server 8.2 for Oracle RAC 10g

    Hello,
We have numerous boxes running the sun platform application server 8.2 and 2 boxes running enterprise version 8.2 all connecting to a 4 node Oracle RAC 10 G release 2 database. We have the system up and working. The application servers are connecting just fine to the database and the apps don't have any problems querying, inserting, etc. However, when we try to do failover testing of situations when a node or nodes of the Oracle RAC database goes down the application server does not gain new valid connections. Our configuration is this, OracleDataSource for the data source, table validation turned on with a valid table, ONS configuration set in properties, connectionCache enabled, and fastconnectionfailover enabled as well in the properties. We have that long oracle rac url with load balancing turned on set fot the database URL. We have the checkbox checked to fail all connections on any failure. ONS is configured properly within the database because we have a java application that runs outside of the application server that uses all the same settings described above (only set manually in our code for the OracleDataSource). This application works seemlessly when DB nodes are shutdown. We can shutdown all but one node and it's still humming along without skipping a beat. Start up one of the others, kill the last node, it still hums along nicely without skipping a beat. We'd really like to get the applications running in the application server to work the same way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We've tried all the combinations that we can think of with configuration settings in the application server and it never works. Am tempted to rip out the database connection pool from inside the application server and configure it manually in the code but we are using entity beans and this is the much easier approach, if it will work. It's down to the point of does sun application server actually work with oracle RAC for connection failovers.

    Hi,
We are also facing similar execption. Here is the error, we are getting, when a node is failed on RAC.

  • RCA for Oracle RAC Performance Issue

    Hi DBAs,
I have setup a 2 node Oracle RAC 10.2.0.3 on Linux 4.5 (64 bit) with 16 GB memory and 4 dual core CPUs each. The database is serving a web application but unfortunately the system is at its knees. The performance is terrible. The storage is a EMC SAN but ASM is not implemented with a fear to further degrade the performance or not to complicate the system further.
I am seeking the expert advises from some GURUs from this forums to formulate the action plan to do the root cause analysis to the system and database. Please advise me what tools I can use to gather the information about the Root Cause. AWR Report is not very helpful. The system stats with top, vmstat, iostat only show the high resource usage but difficult to find the reason. OEM has configured and very frequently report all kind of high wait events.
How I can use effectively find Network bottle necks (netstat command which need to be really helpful to understand).
How I can see the system I/O (iostats) which can provide me some useful information. I don't understand what sould be the baseline or optimal values to compare the I/O activities.
I am seeking help and advised to diagnose the issue. I also want to represent this issue as a case study.
    Thanks
    -Samar-

First of all, RAC is mainly suited for OLTP applications.
Secondly, if your application is unscalable (it doesn't use bind variables and no SQL statements have been tuned and/or it has been ported from Sukkelserver 200<whatever>) running it against RAC will make things worse.
Thirdly: RAC uses a chatty Interconnect. If you didn't configure the Interconnect properly,and/or are using slow Network cards (1 Gb is mandatory), and/or you are not using a 9k MTU on your 1 Gb NIC, this again will make things worse.
You can't install RAC 'out of the box'. It won't perform! PERIOD.
Fourthly: you might suffer from your 'application' connecting and disconnecting for every individual SQL statement and/or commit every individual INSERT or UPDATE.
    You need to address this.
Using ADDM and/or AWR is compulsory for analysing the problem, and/or having read Cary Millsaps book on Optimizing Oracle performance is compulsory.
You won't come anywhere without AWR and OS statistics will not provide any clue.
Because, paraphrasing William Jefferson Clinton, former president of the US of A:
    It's the application, stupid.
99 out of 100 cases. Trust me. All developers I know currently are 100 percent clueless.
That said, if you can't be bothered to post the top 5 AWR events, and you aren't up to using AWR reports, maybe you should hire a consultant who can.

  • Kernel upgrade for oracle rac

In our environment we have two node oracle rac (10.2.0.3) on RHEL4U5. We are using SAN(eva 4000)I need to upgrade the linux from 4.5 to 4.8 including kernel .Do I need to upgrade the SAN firmware too ?
    Thanks

In practise, OS upgrades do not affect other components, say like SAN firmware in this scenario.. I do not always have to upgrade/update the drivers (disk drivers inclusive) on the host every time when the OS on my machine is upgraded.
However, there could be compatibility issues which are rather product specific. SAN provider is the best source to advie us in such cases. As it is wisely advised earlier, it wont harm us to enquire with the involved parties.. although I make a generic statement that OS upgrade might not always lead to a firmware upgrade.

  • Need clarification for firmware & MPIO version for Oracle RAC

    Dear All,
We have two-node Oracle RAC configuration 10gR2, Windos 2033 R2, 64-Bit OS using ASM and Oracle 11gR1 clusterware on HP Blades. The SAN storage is from IBM. We want to upgrade the firmware and MPIO version as per vendor recommendation.
Is there any requirement for Oracle RAC to have specific version of firmware and MPIO? Is there any matrix available for this? Or is it like both nodes should be able to see same SAN storage (LUN) irrespective of version used?
    Thanks

Please note that Oracle RAC doesnt have requirement any sepcific firm ware. If you upgrade the firmware, it should not break any existing config, so pls check with IBM.
Also if you are doing any specific firmware upgrade then IBM should provide the supported version list.
    Hope this help,

  • Oracle rac 10g

    Dear all,
I have by mistake posted this RAC related question under 'database' - Sorry about that. Below is my post and two replies from users
    Dear all,
I am installing rac on 3 node
    OS is SLES 10
    I am confused about partitions:
    I am following the document
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/smiley_rac10g_install.html
Somewhere in the document it is mentioned about "Partition the Disks" It says :
"Repeat the above steps for each disk to be partitioned. Disk partitioning should be done from one node only. When finished partitioning, run the 'partprobe' command as root on each of the remaining cluster nodes in order to assure that the new partitions are configured.
I am confused on "repeeat the above steps for each disk" and then it says "disk partitioning should be done from one node only"
my 3 nodes are exactly the same and it is EXT3
    # fdisk -l /dev/sda2
    Disk /dev/sda2: 20.3 GB, 20390469120 bytes
    255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 2479 cylinders
    Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Do I have to add extra disk space to each of the nodes and then partition and then make cluster file system
    Reply 1 :
    Hi
You have to perform the partiioning of your disks just on 1 node, when they are partionned it isn't necessary to do it again on other nodes. you will have after the partioning to run the 'partprobe' command as root on each of the remaining cluster nodes
Please note that your next questions about RAC should be published in :
Forum Home » Grid Computing » RAC, ASM & Clusterware Installation
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Hub
    Reply 2:
"Do I have to add extra disk space to each of the nodes and then partition and then make cluster file system"
They are talking about the shared storage (SAN/FC disk array). You cannot set up rac just with local disks.
My question is : It means that I must have altogether one extra space not on the local disks but something on SAN/FC disk array and then from one of the nodes just partition that disk and continue as said in the manuals
    Thanks in advance

May I suggest you to read the first chapter of the RAC admin guide in order to get a big picture of this cluster solution.
RAC required external shared disks for storing the Oracle Clusterware (Oracle Cluster Registry and voting disk) files, and database files.

  • How to create Shared RAW disk on solaris 10?

    Hi,
I have built two solaris machine using VMware. I am going to configuare RAC. how to create shared RAW disk for ocr, votedisk and asm?
    OS version = 5.10 32 bit
    Thanks

use openfiler ( software based SAN) if do not have shared disk storage system, this is an appliance kinda software can behave as SAN storage, it can be installed on VM as a guest machine and rest configuration remain same as storage and your RAC deployment.
    http://www.openfiler.com/community/download
alternativly you can follow below method

  • SC 3.1/3.2 Oracle RAC and EMC replication

    hi,
i need to cluster existing 2 node Oracle RAC for disaster recovery. The secondary site is about 180 km away, there is another site 10 km away which is planned to be use for bunker replication (SRDF/STAR). Is it possible to build such topology with Sun Cluster 3.1/3.2? Network connection to all sites is provided (min. 10Gbp).
What is needed to complete this task with SC?

I would recommend that you read my Blueprint from April 2006 (Architecting Availability and Disaster Recovery Solutions) as this has a lot of background on the subject.
First, you will need to implement it as a two node cluster plus a single node disaster recovery system. Ideally, the two node cluster would be configured between the two 'local' sites, i.e. with the site that is 10Km away. The remote site, at 180Km, would then be used for the disaster recovery system.
The recently announced Sun Cluster 3.2 Geographic Edition adds support for SRDF, so you could use Sun Cluster 3.2 and Geo Edition with SRDF for this. I would add that disk block based replication is not ideal for this as it does involve a lot of unnecessary replication data traffic compared with something like Oracle Data Guard. This would be my preferred option, although this is not currently integrated with Geo Edition.
If you need any more info or help, please post again.

  • SAP - Oracle RAC - Linux - VMware

    Hi,
we would like to install SAP on a virtual environment (VMware) on Linux RedHat  platform.
For the database, Oracle RAC is certified with OCFS2 (1.6) only with Oracle Linux and not RedHat Linux 5.
Can we intstall Oracle RAC database on 2 nodes with Oracle Linux and OCFS2 and other SAP components on Redhat Linux 5 ?
Are there any issues with SAP matrix compatibility ?
    Thank you!
    Dan

    Hi Audun,
    Thank you for the links.
I can see the ASM support is new (2.2.2011)
On Note 527843 from 25.01.2011 - Oracle RAC support in the SAP environment
Using raw devices and ASM (Automatic Storage Management) is not supported in the SAP environment. In the case of ASM, there is an exception regarding the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) and the voting disks
    and
on Note 1550133 - Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) from 2 Feb 2011 they support ASM but with restrictions:
ACFS is required for RAC installations with ASM
To use ASM now, you have to migrate your database to ASM manually
Some important functions of SAP BR*Tools like backup, restore, recovery, tablespace and datafile management are not supported at the moment
Support for tablespace and datafile management is planned for Q2/2011
Also ASM instance will introduce another layer in the system with its problems, failures and resources consumption. I see on the Oracle Metalink alot of problems related to ASM. From the marketin point of view is ok, let's oracle do everything but I think if you will keep it simple it will be better.
I didn't figure out if you can directly install Oracle 11.2.0.2, they say "Allows direct SAP system installations with Oracle 11.2"
We have a vBlock hardware with flash disks as FAST Cache so I believe with 1TB of cache IO will not be a problem.
    Thank you!
    Dan

  • Oracle RAC performance

    Hello all,
I have a 3 node oracle RAC. Each server has 2 intel quad core processors. I was asked to extend the RAC to 5 nodes to increase the processing power. I was told that Intel 6 core processors are in the market. So I was looking at the following options and need your input/expertise or suggestions on the following options.
Option 1: Add 2 more nodes with 2 quad core processors to the existing 3 node RAC. so total cores available to process the load will be 40 cores.
Option 2: completely replace all the above 5 nodes(in option 1) with 4 nodes - each with 2 * 6 core processors. total cores available are 48 core.
option 2 will give have 1 less server to maintain.
will the performance on option 2 be better than option 1? Any there any white papers or documentation to help me take a decision as to which option i should go?
    Thanks in advance.
    Raj

    hi
I would also first try to tune the database. However it demands some professional skills. There are many areas of tuning.
For example, if your storage subsystem runs slowly (often a bottleneck), then you will not benefit from and node's scaling!
Upgrading hardware is the last thing to do, as it is costly.
If you have a budget, then run for it, buy new "toys", why not, but make sure you hit the performance issue lest you spent money with no improvement...brr
So start with storage, if disks are old e.g. 10k RPM replace them with new 15k RPM, or SSD even.
Run AWR, see "Top 5 events", find the slowest subsystem, if this is I/O then invest in disks, if CPU then CPU, etc.
Replacing old hardware (scale-up) have this benefit, that you don't have to buy all components and install all software from the scratch (OS, add nodes).
Also, however it is not forbidden, but it's been said by Oracle, nodes should have similar performance.
Next thing is that adding more than 3 nodes to the RAC cluster , probably will not improve the overall performance in a linear way, and is more expensive.
My suggestion is to scale-up after inspecting and finding the bottleneck of the cluster performance.
    Hope this helps,
