Shared iMac shows up twice in finder''s shared pane

Hiya,
I have a new iMac and a Macbook, both running the latest version of Leopard. I have sharing set up on both - file and screen sharing. The Macbook shows up fine in the iMac's shared computer's pane, but the iMac shows up twice in the Macbook's shared pane - once with the correct icon and computer name with full functionality, and once with a PC icon followed by the name "mac001ff34..." and a good few more letters, but has no functionality when i try to connect other than showing an empty guest folder.
Anyone know why this would be happening, or have any suggestions to solve the issue?
Thanks very much

I have had the exact same issue - two or even sometimes three icons (the extras were always with a pc monitor even though there are only macs in our house). It only appeared with my brand new imac and my MBP, not my old imac. Anyway, I figured out how to get rid of it. By default, my computer named my computer my username and the added an apostrophe and computer. So, for instance, my computer was called McIntyre's iMac. I changed the name to McIntyre iMac and the problem solved itself. The networking did not like the apostrophe. I did not have parallels installed, nor windows sharing. The only thing I had on was Printer sharing - which I needed to have. I hope this works for you too, please let us know if it does!!

  • IMac shows multiple times in Finder

I have an issue in the Finder.
I'm working on my iMac. It keeps showing my iMac multiple times, but I can't connect to any of them, and worst of all, I can't remove them.
Anyone had something like that, or knows how to resolve this?

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.sidebarlists.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

  • Connect macbook pro and imacac shows up in the finder window under shared b

  • MacBook Pro shows up twice under Shared in finder sidebar once as PC

This just started today. I have my iMac and MacBook Pro networked through Airport Extreme. Today my MacBook Pro shows up twice under my iMac finder sidebar. First icon is itself (MacBook), second icon is PC. Both with the same name. Get info shows the second icon as PC Server. I cannot connect to the PC icon, which I'm assuming is a good thing.
Why would this suddenly happen, and how do I get rid of it? I've restarted airport, repaired permissions on both machines. Checked to be sure that only AFP is check under File Sharing on both. Network preference pane WINS shows no servers connected on Airport or Ethernet, etc.
    Anyone?
Appreciate any help with this. I'm definitely not a networking expert

Ok, ive had this problem for ages and i think ive pretty much figured it out, your computer is showing your macbook over your network and through Bonjour (apples own wireless connection) Still not sure why it always shows it as a PC though, or as a server...
Anyway, I ive found where it originated from, if you go to System Preferences>Sharing, at the top you will see your computers name and underneath it will say "Computers on your local network can access your computer at:" and its name will be whatever the 'PC server' is called on your finder sidebar, in your case "tosha". You can test it by changing the name to something like "tosha1" by clicking the edit button, in may cases the extra shared computer will disappear, but, after a while it will reappear and will now have the new name. =[
Sadly I dont know how to stop this but I suggest you take screenshots and go to an apple store, tell them about the problem and hopefully they will have an answer for you, they know everything! And even if they dont, check their machines to see if they have the problem, and if they dont, look at the settings and try and find why.
Im sorry I cant be of much help but im getting closer to the bottom of this and im sure its linked to bonjour! Ill keep you posted if anything else happens!
p.s. Im not a networking expert either! Im just as stumped as everyone else!

  • Shared HP printer shows up twice - wierd

Not sure if this is a Leopard or a Tiger question but I have an HP CP1700 printer attached via USB to an Intel iMac/Os 10.5.1 and I have set it to share. When I open Print & Fax on my TiBook/Os 10.4.11 which s ethernet connected, via a router, to the iMac, the printer shows up twice in the menu with checkmarks beside each. The first one is in bold text but greyed out; wierdly, its location is listed as "Directly attached via USB" - although it has never been attached to this computer (nor has any other printer). The second one has its location as MyName's Computer - which I assume is the shared printer although both computers have the same name! Adding to my confusion, I have to confirm in a dropdown menu the selected printer in the Print dialog and both printers are listed in this menu without a clue as to which is which. To make matters worse, when I eventually try to print something, neither option gives me a full complement of print options - the critical Paper type/quality page is missing so I can't specify which pages to print or whether to print in colour or greyscale.
Anyone else seen this and cured it? TIA.
    Simon

you dont mention the model because airprint is a feature a printer have to support before you can print to it from ios devices
if it don't support airprint you can download a hp printing app from app store

my birthday events for only some of my contacts are showing up twice in my iPhone. They are not showing up twice tho on my iMac. No, I do not have duplicate names in my address book either. Any idea how to fix that?

I have uploaded the InDesign file so that you can take a closer look at:
    http://www.hsdesign.comuf.com/downloads/
    The file is called "Template_File.indd"
So, as discussed the main issues are:
    1) The TOC doesn't generate all the listings (only those with the applied paragraph style "Heading 1 - Appendix")
    2) When I try to create a new pargraph style and apply it to existing or new text, it reads the pargraph style in the Paragraph Style menu, but the style doesn't actually apply.
Hopefully you can figure something out from this. I really appreciate your help.
    Thanks!

  • Unkown computer showing up on my finder sidebar under "shared"

    Hi there,
I have an unkown computer showing up on my finder sidebar under "shared". The name of this shared computer is "technicolor". How can I disconnect and delete it? I suspect it is spyware or something similar as when I unplug the ethernet cable that connects to my modem, I can't connect to this computer. When I do connect it is empty.
    OS 10.5.8
Note: I have had Parallels 4 (virtual PC XP) on my mac for a number of years and when that is running it comes up in the sidebar under "shared" but with the name I gave it when set up. So when running both names show.
I would appreciate some direction on how to get rid of this "shared" computer.
    Thanks
    Andrew

Somewhere on the network you are using is a computer with that name. If the network is wifi and it's yours, you should change the password on it immediately. If the network is wifi and it belongs to someone else, then talk to that person or stop using that other person's wifi network.
If you just want to get it out of your sidebar, you can choose to have the Finder window sidebar not show available shares. Go to Finder Preferences->General and un-check CONNECTED SERVERS.

  • Shared computers show up in the Finder as IP addresses

How do I go about giving a name to a shared computer that shows up in the Finder? Also, how to I tell my Mac to always connect to this shared computer, even after reboots? Right now I have to always manually connect to it. It seems to like to login as "guest", even though I have an account on this shared computer, which is an XP box by the way.
    Thanks.

with mac to mac sharing the computers hostname/bonjour name shows in the sidebar.
on your XP will need to give it a hostname.
To make it login automatically, press command +k connect to your xbox smb://serverip
once the volume is mounted you can drag it to your login items, system preferences-->accounts-->select your account, click the login items tab then drag your network volume onto that window.

  • Why does my iMac show 3 shared iMacs?

after updating to yosemite my iMac shows that I have 3 shared iMacs?  what does this mean?  how do I remove the 2nd and 3rd instance of my iMac?

Known bug. One thing you can try is to go to System Preferences/Sharing and un-check all the boxes.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

  • Computers Showing up twice in the network list even with Smb disabled?

I've just purchased an Airport Express and figured it was time to get the network into shape.
I've got 4 macs (MBP, MB, iMac, and PB) and one Windows box. In the sharing list, 2 of the macs show up only once, and 2 of them show up twice. I think I've sourced this to their names. Two of the computers, Peaches and Footlong have names shot enough that their sharing names match the name WINS gives them, the other 2 computers have names that are longer, Living Room iMac is an example. This appears to be an invalid WINS name so it then shows up again as Living Room iMac with a nice imac symbol, then also as MACINTOSH with a windows box icon.
If anybody knows how to get rid of this so I will only see the computers as macs and so there aren't these other non existent computers on the network, that would be great!
Also, I've tried to set up permissions on one computer that I don't have a user account on. When I try to connect using the ID i set up in its sharing preference pane, it says it's invalid, any ideas?

I think you have answered your own question. I had the same problem and when I shortened the computer's name the problem was solved.

  • Showing two members in Find Members

    Hello,
We are on 7.1.5 Essbase, for one cube I am searching for a member "x" using Find members int he outline, for some reason it is showing "X" two times in Find results tab -- this is happening only for this outline, is this a bug or am I doing somethign wrong??? its weird ...anybody face this ...
when I hit these members in Find results tab...both are pointing to same member X in oultine
    Thank You!!!

Is the member shared once -- so one master, and a share of that member?
That would make the member show up twice in a find.
Or search for a member in the name/alias and in a formula and it's in both places -- actually, I'm not sure about that one.
Or duplicate member names and it's there twice.
    Regards,
    Cameron Lackpour

  • Calendar events showing up twice?

My calendars, when I enter an event it shows up twice and I can editi and delete one entry and not the other entry. Any ideas how to correct this?

    Hi Linda,
I understand that you have all your calendars twice, both under iCloud and on my iMAc, and both are checked. Correct ?
I would suggest first of all to make a backup of all your calendars on your HD, becouse the way to eliminate the doubled could result in deleting both (all).  You can do a backup of each calendar from File.. Export... and save somewere the .ics file for each calendar.
You can try to deselect one of them from the cal on your Mac.  You should now see only one event.
If it works delete tha calendar on your iMac and check if the iCloud remains. Connect also your other devices and wait few minutes to be sure that iCloud sinc does not delete the entries on the other devices.
If everithing goes OK proceede with other calendars.
If you eventually delete both copyes of one calendar you will be able to recover from the backup.

  • Windows 7 PC's doesn't show up automatically in Finder

Windows 7 PC's doesn't show up in Finder
I know there are probably a lot of threads about this already but the ones I have read haven't helped me with my problem yet.
The problem I am facing is that my Windows 7 PC's doesn't show up automatically in Finder.
    What works:
    1. I can see all of the computers (Mac and Windows) on the network on my Windows machines, if I look under Network in Windows.
    2. I can see my Mac computers in Finder under Shared
    3. I can CMD+K connect to all of the computers on the network using SMB, both with entering the name of the computer or the IP
    4. I can ping all of the IP's on the network
    What doesn't work:
    1. Windows 7 machines doesn't show up automatically in Finder
    2. I can't ping hostnames in Network Utility, can only ping IP's - it says cannot resolve hostname
    What I have tried:
    1. Turned on SMB sharing on OSX
    2. Edited /private/etc/hosts to include Windows PC's
    3. Turned off all firewalls on Windows, OSX and Router
    4. Installed Bonjour on Windows machines
    5. A bunch of other things...
    Theories:
    1. The best theory I can come up with is that OSX is having trouble with NETBIOS and that's why the Windows computers aren't showing up in OSX but I can still see the OSX computers in Windows 7. And the reason why I can see the other Macs in OSX is that they use something other than NETBIOS to broadcast their existence on the network.
    2. The Gods are against me...
It should be said that I had it work for a very short while, but then i changed something and couldn't reverse it.
I hope someone can help me find the little thing I am missing to get this thing to work.
