Shared Libraries: sound quality is dreadful!

Holy cow! I've got a diesel gigabit wired network set up in my office. Moved all my music to my laptop, figuring I'd just access it on my desktop via Sharing the Library.
But on listening to a few choice tracks, it turns out the sound quality is terrible when doing this. Downright atrocious. Dreadful. Laughably bad.
I figure it's some sort of dynamic bandwidth adjustment on the part of iTunes… of course I can't tell it to "just use as much **** bandwidth as you want, I've got plenty to burn."
Anyone else have this experience? More importantly, anyone find a way to ease the pain?

I don't see the issue at all and I have been sharing my music for ages.
It sounds the same regardless which device it is streamed to.
I use Airport Express devices in my house (2 of them, one is a 'G' only model, the other is an 'N' model).
Basically I stream music to all devices using just the 'G' network and I don't have sound problems.

  • Boot Camp 3.1 Sound Quality issues & Sharing Between Mac OS & XP

    Hello all,
    I've just recently received my first iMac and I have successfully installed Boot Camp 3.1 with Windows XP running. Everything seems to run very well except two things I would like some clarification & help on please:
    (Please note - after strolling through numerous google pages, forums I have yet to find a suitable and logical solution.)
    01. First of all, everything on the Windows XP side is working fine. Although the sound quality is quite hollow/thin with lots of treble. This is very noticeable when compared to the sound being played on Mac OSX. Also, the volume on the windows side is very loud?? I read on this forum that when headphones are plugged in on the windows side, it sounds normal? So I did this and it worked, however, at the moment I'm not in a position to fork out some more money for quality speakers. (although i am drooling over the HK Soundsticks III EU)
    Is there a solution for making the sound quality the same as the Mac side? I've also updated to the latest Cirrus Logic Driver and this made no difference?
    02. Again, looking through various forums, including this one, I still have not found a simple solution for sharing my music between Mac OSX & Windows XP. Many of the reported solutions are either extremely complex with various version of how to do it: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2309922&tstart=135 or use an external Hard Drive formatted in FAT32.
    I understand that Mac is only able to read the NTFS partitions and not write to them. I am aware of third party software's such as MacDrive but having heard general and corruption issues with such software I am reluctant to use them. Not sure if Paragon NTFS for Mac 8.0 will suffer the same issues as it is a driver rather than a piece of software. Will this work?
    I hope you can help. Many thanks in advance!
    Simon

    Old post, but for any one else,
    If your using external speakers now then they should have the same quality on either OS.
    Have you tried going into the "preferences" (or whatever they're called) on Window's and looked at what the sound settings are? I can't remember what they are on my old XP but maybe they just need to be tweaked? I think there is a way to set the loudness, left/right equal, etc, on either the head phones or externals.
    Well, maybe it's that simple......
    On the music sharing, I wouldn't know of a way on NTFS to share anything with a Mac (no writing, no sharing). If you have more then one computer, maybe get a NAS (network attached storage), NDAS etc, and just put the library on that and anyone could access it then?
    I had this all typed up for a MP and then realized you had an iMac.
    Oh well, maybe this will help someone else.
    Boot camp will only partition one drive into two area's so the idea won't work on a single drive computer. So it looks like maybe an external storage disk for the music will work.(Maybe use a 3rd party partition-er, but again I don't know if Boot Camp will like it even after the initial install?) And won't work on an external drive (Window's/Boot Camp).
    But if you had a second drive (if you had a Mac Pro) you could use for Windows, you could format the full drive as HFS and then have Window's format the XP partition to the size you need for XP (NTFS) and then just leave the rest formatted as HFS and then put the Music you want to share on that partition (HFS) and then the Mac and Window's could share?
    I'll be trying this soon my self so we'll see if it works!

  • Error while loading shared libraries: libglut.so.3: cannot open shared

    Hi, I bought the new Humble Bundle today and downloaded the tar.gz file for Fieldrunners (which is supposed to work under linux)
    "error while loading shared libraries: libglut.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" is the message I get when I put ./Fieldrunners into konsole after copying the fieldrunners folder into /opt
    I have freeglut-2.8.0-1 installed
    This is the README:
    This is Fieldrunners for Linux.
    It was built under Ubuntu 12.04 but is known to work in other distros.
    The only external dependancy is the freeglut3 library.
    To install:
      copy the fieldrunners directory (executable and game assets) to /opt
      copy the .fieldrunners directory (user options, achievements and saves) to your home directory.
    If you don't want to copy the fieldrunners directory to /opt, you can likely start fieldrunners from any folder and it will attempt to find the assets in the same folder as the executable.
    The executable /opt/fieldrunners/Fieldrunners will create the .fieldrunners directory in the home directory if not found.
    EDIT: Forgot to mention, there is no PKGBUILD file in the tar.gz

    My Fieldrunners says:
    cannot open audio device (Device or resource busy)
    Fieldrunners: pcm.c:928: snd_pcm_state: Assertion `pcm' failed.
    ... so I have to kill pulseaudio first (or use padsp). After that (with alsa), it has choppy sound. 1 second sound, one pause...
    Spacechem is windows binary + a wine'ish blob (that just freezes on my machine), comes only as rpm/deb and seems to insist to be installed in /opt (AND some files in /usr/share). The included .exe doesn't work with native wine either (without further adjustments at least).
    Doesn't really look good at all so far, this bundle.
    edit:
    Also: Uplink seems to be unplayable on a big resolution Display without workarounds due to its small font...?
    Spirits says:
    (Spirits-64:14143): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'image-missing' for stock: Fatal error reading PNG image file: Incompatible libpng version in application and library
    ... but seems to work fine at a first glance (safe for a missing picture in the launcher which isn't really tragic).
    edit:
    ( Aaaand, now I notice I'm in the wrong thread and/or forum. Where did that generic "is the bundle working?"-thread go? Stupid multi-tabbing xD )

  • Help me on choosing the best sound quality for my music on my itunes!!!

    I heard that AIFF Encoder is the best sound quality you can import your music into Itunes. On the settings for AIFF Encoder do you know what Sample Rate, Sample Size, and what Channel I should set it to? Should I just leave them on Auto? How about if I have a HDCD? What are your suggestions?

    I agree use Apple Lossless. Bizarrely it is also easier to share Apple Lossless with Windows Media Player than AIFF.
    I have my entire iTunes library in Apple Lossless and shared with WMP and also Media Center 2005. I can also use it in full lossless quality with Roku SoundBridge, Apple TV, iPhone, iPod, etc. etc. etc.

  • I meet a problem about linking when I use Sharing Libraries.

    I meet a problem when I use Sharing Libraries.
    When I debug my flash on my local end, I can set the URL to "ShareLibrary.swf" (For “Export for runtime sharing”).
    All Files linking the file "ShareLibrary.swf" are working correctly.
    But When I put this swf on the net, the link can't work unless changing the URL to full path including the ip address.
    Is there any way that I can make it work using the same URL, no matter the file is on the local or on the net?

    Morning Alex,
    Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    For troubleshooting on this, take a look at this article:
    iPhone: Sound muffled or low from the speaker or when speaking into the mic.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1631
    Resolution
    Check the following:
    Check the volume setting on your iPhone. You can adjust the volume by pressing the volume up and down buttons on the left side of the iPhone.
    If you are using a third-party iPhone case, make sure it is not covering the speaker, microphone, or top microphone. Try making some calls without the case to see if a caller can now hear you more clearly or play music to see if the speaker's volume is better.
    If you have not removed the plastic display film used for protection during shipment, either ensure that the microphone and speaker are not covered or remove the film completely.
    Check that the speaker, microphone mesh covers, and top microphone hole are not clogged with lint or other debris.
    If the speaker, microphone mesh, or top microphone (iPhone 4 only) appear clogged, please use a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to clean them. To do this follow these instructions:
    Use the brush to carefully and gently brush the speaker and microphone mesh.
    Brush away from the 30-pin dock connector to avoid getting any debris into the dock connector.
    Hope this helps,
    Mario

  • JBI Shared Libraries

    Hi. I have arrived to a new project and they are working with JBI (developing BPEL) with Glassfish + openESB.
    I have no experience with JBI and I've been request to do some research about JBI Shared libraries. The problem comes for us when two composite aplications have to share one resource (in this case an .xsd file that includes other schema files). I don't know how to do such a thing. What I've done so far is:
    - create a new project (as a java project in netbeans) with the needed files
    - create the jbi.xml file under the META-INF folder
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <jbi
        xmlns="http://java.sun.com/xml/ns/jbi" version="1.0"
        xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
        xmlns:identification="http://www.sun.com/jbi/descriptor/identification/v1.0">
        <!-- identification information about this shared library-->
        <shared-library class-loader-delegation="self-first">
            <identification>
                <name>my-shared-lib</name>
                <description>JBI shared library</description>
                <identification:VersionInfo component-version="1.0.0" build-number="000001"/>
            </identification>
            <shared-library-class-path>
                <path-element>./xsd/Requests/request1.xsd</path-element>
                <path-element>./xsd/Requests/types.xsd</path-element>
            </shared-library-class-path>
        </shared-library>
    </jbi>- deploy in the glassfish server via web interface
    But when the POJO class that needs that file it is not available (neither in the classpath). What I have to do or what I'm doing wrong?.
    Thanks in advance

    "Also with regards shared libraries - whn some people come out of their browsers they clear their temporary internet folders of everything ie: cached/cookies too. So those people would have to redownload everytime. Is that right?"
    Cookies do not matter for caching. If they set their browser to clear cache - ALL files will be loaded every time new sessions starts.
    "So even if I create that framework to test for changes which I doubt I can do then
    it sounds like an excellent idea to have various shared libraries just for the fact that it doesn't matter
    about file size but the positive is that if I change one library the other remain unchanged.
    Would that be a correct assumption?"
    There is no single correct answer or even recommendation to how to deal with RSLs (Runtime Shared Libraries). Each application dictates its own rules that depend on objects availability at the points they need to be consumed. Size may or may not matter (again, answer depends on architecture and internal application business logic).
    From the standpoint of choices of what to load and what is changed, if there is no mechanism that detects changes and because of how caching is done - it is only all or nothing approach (either all RSLs have to be loaded per session or one relies exclusively on browser cache).
    Change detection is pretty difficult to implement if you rely on client side only because, again, how cahing is handled.
    Also, conceptually RSLs must be very stable entities and shouldn't be something that changes often if ever. If they are meant to change often - it is definitely a critical design flaw. Perhaps, this case indicates that what is actually happens is that RSLs attempt to represent data/information/presentation layers. Data MUST EXIST TOTALLY separate from logic and presentation. I cannot stress it strong enough - mixing information, presentation and logic leads to major inefficiencies if not disasters.

  • I tunes sound quality, sounds like a synthesizer, high pitched Mickey Mouse

    NEED SERIOUS HELP. Recently moved, not sure if I Tunes ever sounded right since the move. Before moving I upgraded to the latest I Tunes version. I'm not sure if that ever sounded right, with the move going on I don't recall if I even listened to it at the old location after the upgrade.
    In the new location at first I remember having no sound, but I thought that was just because my son is sharing the computer with me and he had his headphones plugged in. But when I unplugged the headphones there was still no sound. Later on I was able to get sound somehow, but it sounds absolutely horrendous..for example we're talkin James Brown vocals sounding like Mickey Mouse, like a high pitched synthesizer sound, as if many tracks are missing..I don't know how to describe it. All songs sound like this as do CDs that are played through I Tunes. I tried the fix going in QuickTime preferences and putting sound out to 48 /16 bit but it didn't touch it.
    I have a huge music library and I'm absolutely freaking out thinking it is all corrupted. I have a back up but its a month or so old and I add about 10 songs per week. Ideas anyone????

    By way of experiment, try heading into your QuickTime control panel again, go into the Audio tab, and try checking the "Safe mode (waveOut only)" box. OK out of the tab and restart iTunes.
    Any improvement in the sound quality?

  • Itunes Sharing Libraries- Assistance Required

    I have just had one of my computers upgraded and I now cannot share the libraries as I could in the past- all settings are correct ie both computers preferences are to look for shared libraries.
    The issue is firstly that visibility of the shared library in itunes is intermittent. I have attempted to work with the firewall settings but I cannot solve this.
    Secondly when it is visible, and you click on the library, it starts to load and then before it completes the library disappears and is not visible again.
    Any thoughts on the matter?
      Windows XP

    From a networking point of view, there are two basic things that happen. First, the serving computer sends a muticast message advertising its presence. That's a UDP packet containing its Library information to the multicast address 224.0.0.251 on port 5353. It doesn't send these packets often. There's some algorithm which decreases the frequency of these packets over time, to avoid excess chattiness on the network. You could be experiencing that. Try stopping and starting Tunes on the serving computer.
    The second thing that happens is that the client computer establishes a connection to the server computer on port 3689. If you have a firewall, you need to open up this port. It does seem wrong not to get an error message when the connection fails. Sounds like a bug. But I'll wager that's what's happening, and why the link disappears. I suppose it could also be a password error, check the Keychain for old iTunes passwords.
    God luck. Sometimes it requires a reboot on the client computer to get things working.

  • Airtunes sound quality

    I have an iTunes library in my iMac with all the music files ripped from my CDs in Apple Lossless. The iMac is connected to an Airport Extreme as my wireless router and I have 2 Airport Express as repeters. In the iMac I have the Squeezeserver running.
    In one of my HiFi systems I have one of the Airport Express connected via Ethernet cable to a Squeezebox. The digital coax output of the Squeezebox is going to a Genesis TimeLens De-Jitter and from there to my PS Audio PerfectWave DAC. The output of the DAC is feeding my Woo Audio tube headphones amplifier.
    Last night I connected the digital Toslink output of the Airport Express to the Genesis TimeLens to then follow the same sound chain as above.
    I compared the sound of the exact same song (file in iTunes) one from the Squeezebox and the other from Airtunes. To my surprise they sounded different. The sound using the Squeezebox chain was significant better. More focus, better bass, more realistic and with better texture. The sound using AirTunes was lean and difussed with a huge and un-realistic soundstage.
    I don't undrestand if I am using the same source file and the same electronics from the Airport Extreme on why it is so different. I tried the equalizer route with minimal success.
    Is iTunes or AirTunes doing something in the processing? I would liekto eliminate the Squeezebox solution but not at the cost of quality of the sound.
    Message was edited by: Musicman159

    I am not a big fan of using the AirTunes feature of iTunes because it is not Applescriptable and because you can only output to one stream at a time. The sound quality is quite good as far as I can tell. The only time it suffered is when I was using iTunes on my laptop that was playing from the shared music on my server. The stream would get choppy and sometimes choke, but it is working better after changing my wireless router channel to the other end of the spectrum.
    It is really nice that it outputs to optical, preserving the digital signal and eliminating the need for expensive shielded cables to reduce noise from all the other wires behind my stereo.
    If I were to do it over, I would have saved the money that I spent on airPort Express to use on my irTrans project.

  • Can't copy songs between home shared libraries

    I used to have home sharing set up to automatically copy songs between my wife's iMac and my Mac Pro. About a month ago, I changed the boot drive in my Mac Pro to an SSD. Sometime after, I also de-authorized all of my computers from iTunes (I had some dead computers that I wanted to clear out and re-authorized the two computers we are currently using). I just noticed today that songs we each buy are no longer synched between our computers, and I suspect either the iTunes deauthorization or the moving of files between computers must be the reason.
    The shared libraries still work, and I can play songs from my wife's library and vice-versa, but we can't even manually copy songs. The "Settings" and "Import" options on the bottom are missing, the option to show songs missing from my library is also missing, and where I used to be able to drag songs from one library to another, this no longer works.
    Both of our computers are on the same network and we are both logged into the same account. I read other posts that suggested turning off home sharing on both computers. I did this, rebooted both computers, and then turned sharing back on. Still no importing. I also tried logging out of iTunes and logging back in again, but still no dice.
    Apple products are so nicely designed, but when they break, they often leave no clues as to what is going wrong, and it can be infuriating trying to figure out why!
    Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?
    Help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Okay ... I just solved my own problem. I read about turning on / off home sharing, but I didn't realize that there are two similar sounding options for doing this. I went to "Preferences --> Sharing" and chose to turn on / off sharing of my library. This did nothing.
    However, I later noticed that in the Menu Bar under "Advanced", there is also a way to turn on / off home sharing. I turned this on / off, and my files are now sharing again. Yay!!!

    That could be an accessibility issue. Check the user with whom you installed Apache server. Check the user has permissions to access the libraries.

  • IPhone 5s Call Sound Quality

    Hey- I have a brand new iPhone 5s with AT&amp;T and I've noticed that the call sound quality is worse than my old iPhone 4. The call sound is more muffled and a lot less crisp. Is this a common issue or is it just my phone? Thank you!

    When I hold my iPhone 5S in my left hand to my left ear the sound is muffled. I remember Steve Jobs saying you're holding it wrong. Although this had nothing to do with the problem we're having now it got me to thinking. I looked at my hand holding the iPhone my thumb was on the left edge with my to two Center fingers on the right edge. My index finger was up close to the noise canceling mic on the back of the phone and my palm was down by the regular mic.  I could see as I talked the voice could hit my palm travel up my hand to my index finger which was close to the microphone on the back.
    I called my wife on the house phone using my iPhone 5S. She said that my voice was muffled. I took my index finger away from the microphone and moved it next to my two Center fingers on the right side of the phone. This moved my palm away from the microphone at the bottom. I did this while she stayed on the line. She said that now she could hear me clearly. I then moved my index finger to completely cover the back microphone. Once again she said that the sound was still good. I then moved my index finger a small amount away from the microphone and she said that my voice was muffled again.
    I believe that the way I was holding my hand acted as a megaphone to the noise canceling microphone in the back. The noise canceling microphone thought my voice was noise and was suppressing it.
    I work in a noisy environment, so I like the idea of the noise canceling microphone. Going to the settings and turning off the noise canceling microphone or putting a small piece of tape over the microphone is really not a good option for me.
    For now I will use this new way of holding the phone until Apple can fix this issue.

  • Poor sound quality in timeline and export; fine in Source?

    Hello all.
    Newbie to Pr but experienced pro in digital audio. I'm stumped and know I'm just missing something somewhere.
    I've made a music video for one of my songs. The graphics are all done (in AE), imported to Pr and eveything looks great. I import the final mix of the audio and it sounds very low quality when played from the timeline and in the final output, regardless of format (I've tried several presets and custom settings as well). I played around and noticed that the audio sounds fine when played from the Source window inside Premier.
    The Pr session is comrised of 18 video tracks (not all playing at once, of course) and one stereo audio track.
    I've tried re-exporting the audio from Logic at different bit depths, sample rates and file formats (mp3, wav, AAC, etc) but the results are the same every time: Source (Pr)sounds fine, Logic output sounds fine, rendered / timeline playback sounds like very low quality mp3 and final product sounds just as bad.
    I've tried everything I can think of. I hope one of you can show me what I'm missing.
    TIA!

    Thank you for the reply!
    I was experiencing the same results no matter what export settings I used. Plus the poor sound quality was present in the timeline itself, without even exporting the project.
    I finally threw my hands up, started a completely new project, drug the same audio file in... sounded fine. Copied / Pasted the video clips from the original, broken project and boom, eveything is fixed. Yeah, corrupted Pr file it turns out. All I had to do was start a new project and import all the old components.
    I've had to do this in Logic a lot (increasingly, these days). I just wish I'd tried it 10 hours earlier! Ha.
    Anyway, problem solved, and thanks very much!
