Shared library : client iTunes shows grossly wrong track time...

Bit of a weird one here.
When I connect to my shared library (wireless LAN), when the library is loaded all the track times are displayed correctly. However, if I try to play one of the tracks from the client machine, suddenly the displayed track time changes dramatically (e.g. from 5:00 to 34:24) and the time remaining, while the track is playing, reflects this too.
However (1) if you let the track play to where it should end, it does end when it should and (2) if you play the track on the machine that contains the shared library this does not happen.
I'm sure this has started happening only recently (both machines are running latest iTunes 7.6.2)
Any ideas?
Neil

After some digging around it turned out to only affect files that were encoded using VBR, though I tried to "convert" some of the problematic files using iTunes to VBR (so, VBR to iTunes VBR) and they worked OK.
I should've added that I don't do my ripping and encoding with iTunes. I rip with Max (to FLAC) and transcode the FLAC files to MP3 with LAME (command-line). Originally my trancoding script was using VBR - I changed it to use CBR (192) and the problem seems to have been fixed.
However, there is obviously some quirk with playing VBR MP3s via a shared library as, as I described originally, you don't get this behaviour on the local machine. It's only when you try to access the songs over the network that the track time gets all messed up.
I'm going to leave this marked as "unanswered" for the time being as I believe that this is an iTunes bug.

The short of it all is that iTunes and/or Mac OS X Mavericks has broken some functionality in IPv6 or how iTunes home sharing is using it (I am leaning towards the latter as the iTunes team has a very bad habit of releasing bugs in the past).
Disabling IPv6 will also fix this issue with iTunes 11.1.2+ on Windows.

  • My shared library will not show up no matter what I do.

I have tried everything, even apple support and they couldn't fix it. My shared library will not appear on my computers. I want to share stuff on my desktop with my laptop and neither will show a shared library.!

  • My Mac can't see my shared library in iTunes

Io have a little issue here I set up my home sharing between my Mac and my pc and my pc iTunes can't see my mac 's library in the shared icon but my MacBook pro's iTunes can't see my pc's library help please

We now have the same problem. From our iMac we can see our PC's iTunes library, but cannot load it; the progress bar runs indefinitely. The PC, however, can see the iTunes library on the iMac. This used to work.

  • Itunes shows up wrong on start

This is an ongoing bug for me and itunes, where itunes will show up without showing anything except the minimize, maximize and close buttons(everything else was black), until i minimize and the restore the application. any ideas whats happening, or how to fix it?

I have the same problem with my windows vista laptop.
I think it must have something to do with windows vista as all the people who are having the problems have the windows vista os.

  • Songs in iTunes display the wrong run time

I recently acquired a large amount of new music from my job, but there's a problem with some of the songs. Many of them appear to be much longer than they actually are. As in, the time that it shows for the song is higher than the actual length of the song. What happens when you try to play the song, is that it will play the song like normal, and when it gets to the end it will go to the next track. However, you can't pause or fast forward without jumping to another place in the song. Some albums have this flaw, but not others.
There are also a couple songs that are longer than iTunes says they are. These songs will continue to play even after it has supposedly reached the end.
    http://www.popoa.byethost22.com/07%20Par...
that is a link to one of the songs with the flaw. the actual track is :45 but iTunes says it's 2:45.
    Please help.

I've been having the exact same problem. I think its definitely a problem with iTunes since the files work perfectly on WMP. I found that I can fix my files by right clicking on them in iTunes and converting them to .mp3's. Kind of a hassle because you need to go delete the original files and reorganize otherwise you will have duplicates, but at least they'll have the right runtime.
Not ideal but a fix nonetheless.

  • Every time apple sends an update for my Itunes it goes wrong. last time this happened I got someone to fix it for me. I am very techno phobic and do not understand the on line instructions for uninstalling and reenstalling. Please help in simple English.

when ever Apple sends an update to my pc, it knackers up my itunes. The last time this happened I got someone to fix the problem for me, I am very techno phobic and do not understand the uninstalling and reinstalling. It comes up error MSVCR80. Please can someone help in simple English , as the technical jargon just goes over my head.
    much Thanks

The last time this happened I got someone to fix the problem for me, I am very techno phobic and do not understand the uninstalling and reinstalling.
I think you should get a friend or family member who knows a bit more about computers to fix this for you.
They should try the following instructions.
Uninstall your existing copy of iTunes. Delete any copies of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer files from your downloads areas for your web browsers and download a fresh copy of the iTunes installer from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
(The current build of the 11.1.4.62 installer was changed a few days ago, which fixed the bulk of the reports of MSVCR80.dll/R6034/APSDaemon.exe/Error-7/AMDS-could-not-start trouble ... but the build number on the installer was not changed. So we're trying to make sure you do the reinstall using a "new good" 11.1.4.62 installer instead of an "old bad".)
Does the install with the new copy of the installer go through properly? If so, does that clear up the error message?
If you still have the same error messages cropping up, then try the procedures from the following user tip:

  • Shared library randomly disconnects or disappears or doesn't show up at all

Using an XP Pro machine to share library. Vista machine to connect to library.
Half the time I start up iTunes and look on Vista the shared library is not showing up. Another half of the time it will be there and I'll be listening and bam it shuts off. Then I have to go through a procedure of closing down both itunes on client and server and then re enabled shared libraries. Both systems are wired to a router.
Any ideas? This is very annoying.

Open disk utility and see it the hard drive show in disk utility, if so then repair it along with the permissions. If it is not in disk utility then It sounds like your hard drive has gone bad.

  • Itunes Shared Library between Mac and Windows isn't sharing videos properly

Hi, I'm a bit new to the mac world, but I'm the proud owner of a new macmini. I also own a Windows 7 machine.
My problem is with the Itunes Shared library. Itunes 10 on my mac is set up to share everything, including podcasts. I can see these from Itunes 10 on Windows, and I can play music (and audio podcasts), but video is hit or miss.
Videos downloaded from Itunes U tend to work, lectures and stuff.
Video podcasts (also downloaded from Itunes Store) and other videos don't work at all. Itunes just doesn't play the video, and doesn't even launch the "black screen". The timer remains at 0.00.
On the other hand, sharing videos from the PC to Mac works well, i.e. my mac can see the contents of the itunes shared library on Windows and play videos. It just doesn't work the other way around.
Thanks for reading and I hope this problem can be fixed.

    Woops!

  • ITunes 9 shows/movies show wrong run time.

Things were fine with iTunes 8, but ever since installing iTunes 9 I notice almost everything in my movie list shows the wrong run time, usually double what it actually is, and the same shows up on my ipod after syncing it. I am not sure what is causing this, but it's a little annoying. So I was wondering if anyone has some info or a solution? Thanks for any help.

Attached are screen shots for the menu handling code for good1, bad1, and the launch section of the code for the main.vi.  In the launch code the good1 is in the bottom loop and bad1 is in the upper loop.  Pretty simple stuff, set corresponding led for the case string. If statement to handle code when led is true....
Another interesting aside, I just remembered that I had the same problem with good3 as bad1until I added the error out indicator as shown in bad1.  Once I added the indicator to good3 it was fine, which is why it was added when I wrote bad1.  I had intended to go back and add it to good1 and good2, but haven't found the time/need.
I did have some really elaborate code to catch and display any errors messages in bad1, but I only caught an error once and it was under some strange condition in development mode which I was unable to dupllicate.  Deleted that code in frustration....
    Best Regards,

  • ATV2 can't see iTunes shared library

I have spent hours reading forums and trying many different settings and am about to return my AppleTV.  I have tons of movies converted for viewing on the AppleTV but I feel I have wasted to many hours of my life and am about to give up.
    Here is my setup:
Dell XPS Desktop connected to router by ethernet, Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop connected via WAN - both running latest version of iTunes (10.2.1) Both running Windows 7 Professional (32 bit)
AppleTV2 (connected wireless - current firmware)
iPod Touch (3rd generation - current iOS)
Home Sharing enabled on all devices with the same user/password
    D-Link DIR-655 router
    McAfee Security-as-a-Service Firewall/Anti-Virus
Right now, I have been only working on my desktop PC - I figure if I get that going, I can do the same to my laptop to get it going as well...
I have opened up the recommened ports on my software firewall.
I've briefly opened the ports on my router.  (closed them again as I don't want those ports open to the 'world')
I've checked that iTunes is allowed to access internet through firewall
I completely uninstalled McAfee and tried with windows firewall turned off.
I have reset my router to factory conditions with minimal user settings
    I have reinstalled iTunes
    I have reinstalled Bonjour service...
Can't think of anything else to try
My iPod is able to communicate with the ATV2.  I can 'stream' from iPod to ATV2 no problem.  However, I keep the movies on my desktop and want that to be the main media source.  Also - on the 2 PC's, I haven't ever seen the other's Shared Library in iTunes.  If I turn off iTunes and reload, I can briefly see my library on the ATV2 and iPod... but only for a minute or 2 and then it disappears.  Does anybody see any glaring thing I have forgotten?  I'm at my wit's end... please help!!!

I too have not been getting any sleep because of this. The main reason why I bought ATV2 is because everyone told me it's plug and play, always works. That is bull !!! I hope you can help me out, and that I can get some decent sleep for once, long hours troubleshooting this !!!
Turned Home Sharing On and Off many times on both ends
Hardwired both HTPC (running iTunes) & ATV2 to my router
    Router is a DLINK DIR-615
Added IP for ATV2 to DMZ in router for unresticted access
Tried Home Sharing with and without DONE button pressed
    Have latest iTunes 10.x
Tried enabling/disabling "Share Library on Network" under Preferences
Only 2 things left to try:
Open the recommended ports 3689 (TCP) & 5353 (UDP) in XP on my HTPC (running iTunes)
Replace my D-Lilnk router with another model
I really hope someone out there can help me out. I was hoping this would be plug&play easy
Thanks so much for your time !!!

  • Home Sharing Library doesn't include all music that's in main Music Library

Sorry if this has been answered previously. I haven't been able to fashion a search to find the answer.
I turned on Home Sharing in the Remote app on my iPhone 4. It readily found my Home Sharing Library from my iMac (that contains 1306 items). After entering in my Apple ID and password, I tried to search for a recently purchased song using the Remote app and it didn't find it. I went to the iMac and immediately found the song in the Library and in the Purchased playlist. I also noticed that the Library on the iMac contains 2781 items.
Question #1: Why wouldn't the Home Sharing Library on my iMac not contain the same songs that are in the Library on the same iMac?
To solve the problem, I just synced the iMac to the Remote app (not through Home Sharing) and was able to see my entire library.
Problem/Question #2: Since my Home Sharing library doesn't show all the music, when my wife's MacBook Home Shares, she too does not see all the music available for streaming. They are all on the same wi-fi network. The reason I use Home Sharing vs. Sharing of the library is that I automatically transfer iPhone apps across the network as she syncs her iPhone to her computer (she wants no music).
Hoping someone can help me troubleshoot.
    Thanks.
    Martin

i'm guessing you used more than one iTunes store account to purchase content.
if that's the case, try authorizing your Mac to play/use the content purchased from the other iTS account(s).
that's basically very easy. all you have to do is +log out+ of one account (click on the account name in the Store window and select +sign out+ from the pop-up dialog) and into the other, and then they will both be authorized. when done, sign back into your usual account. you'll have to do that one time only.

  • Certain songs inaccessible in shared library

I'll try to keep this as concise as possible.
I have all of my music in my iTunes library on my iMac. All of it is accessible and all the files play correctly.
I have the library shared and access the library from my Macbook Pro. Everything works as expected and I'm able to play my files on the Macbook Pro over my network...except a few files.
I've narrowed the problem down to some .m4a files that were purchased and downloaded from Beatport. They simply will not play from the shared library in iTunes. However:
If I browse directly to the files using the finder over the network, they can be played in Quicktime.
If I browse directly to the files and add them to my local library on the Macbook Pro, they play fine in iTunes.
The only way these files DON'T work is being played via the shared library. Otherwise, they work fine.
Thanks in advance for any ideas / suggestions.

I'm having the same problem (similar), but no resolution.
All of the files that are older files won't play, mostly ripped from CDs. My last ipod classic played them just fine. I bought a new one last month and its not playing them.
    These files play perfectly on:
    itunes
    iphone 3G
    iphone 4
I've even isolated it down to one song (for a sample) and put ONLY that song on the iphone 3G, ipod classic, and iphone 4, and the only problem is on the ipod classic.
I have removed all songs from the classica, reset it, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled softwared, just about everything i can think of. I'm happy to send the file to anyone who wants to trouble shoot with just a single song.
This is really really frustrating, because i got the calssic so i can carry the old songs that I don't have room for on my iphone.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Jeremy

  • Where is a shared library actually stored?

I am restoring a friend's Windows 7 PC after a hard drive crash.  I installed iTunes 11.4 and used the backup we had created, but the music files in her iTunes library were not restored -- only the structure of her library with artists, albums, etc., but no music.
On my Macbook, I can see "Dianna's Library" as a Shared library in iTunes so long as Home Sharing is turned *off*.  Screen cap attached.  I can play music from that library.  I want to find the path for that library so that I can copy it to her PC, but I can't find a way to view where it is actually stored.  It doesn't seem to be on our NAS although another Shared library is "iTunes Server on NAS."   Nor is it on the other Windows 7 PC on our home network.  Can anyone advise me?

That worked!  However, most of the files are in the cache.  One of the paths (/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/libgnsdk_submit.1.9.5.dylib) points to a "dynamic library."  I will do some more research to find out if that might be the location.
Here are the other contents of the "Open Files and Ports" contents in case something jumps out at you.  I am certainly not expected you to pore over these, however, and again, thank you.
