Shared Library--One iPod--two XP users.... massive duplications!

Our iTunes is filling up with duplicate entries! My wife and I recently bought a new XP computer and uploaded our music collection to iTunes so that we could use the iPod w/dock as our main music source. I tried to set it up so that everything went to the "Shared Music" folder. I now find that our new iPod has formed a primary bond with my wife's library and not the shared library. Is there a way to change this? I'm hitting a lot of trouble with duplications--and I suspect it may have something to do with this.... Help!

Actually, I just figured out the answer to my own question. Apparently this is not possible with the shuffle. I don't know how to cross-post on these boards, but if anyone else is interested the relevant thread can be found by searching for:

  • Sharing library/playlists etc. All users on one computer STEP BY STEP guide

ok i recently installed a new hard drive and when I set up iTunes I found I needed to set up iTunes the way i used to have it... which was that all users shared the same library... and if one user added a song we all had it... without manually modifying anything... also playlists created by one would appear for others.
A scan of the forum caused me headaches and little help.
SO... a couple of hours palyng around and I am where i want to be!!!!
please note... save time and modify permissions at the correct stage... or it won't work!!!
    Step By Step...
    Go To...
Main users iTunes folder (iTunes Library, Album Artwork, iTunes Music Library.xml, iTunes Music)
    AND... do a get info...
    Under... Ownership & Permissions...
Change the group to admin and give this group 'read & write' and others the same or leave it at read only.
Hit the 'apply to enclosed items' button!!!
THEN... drag this folder to a shared location... IE Users / Shared.
THEN... make an alias and drag it back to the Music Folder in your own home library. (where the original folder was previously)!
    DELETE the word ALIAS.
Log in as another user and get rid of the iTunes folder. (if the other user has different songs etc... then save them to a separate location for re-importing later!
Go to the Shared location... Make another Alias... drag it to the music folder and again DELETE the word ALIAS.
    Do this for all users...
Any user who adds a song to iTunes... is shared by all.
Any user who creates a playlist... is shared by all.
One downside to this... if a user is logged in using iTunes and you switch users iTunes will not be available to the new user... unless the application is quitted...
    G4 iMac 20 1.25ghz / G4 iBook 14 1.33ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

That steps above are far too much (and unecessary) work.
Drag the iTunes folder to a shared location.
Make sure all users have REad/Write permission to the iTunes fodler.
Each user start iTunes holding the Option key, select Choose existing library and pick the iTunes folder in the Shared folder.

  • Vista and iTunes shared library - Admin vs. Standard User

Here's a good one.....I am the administrator of the family's Vista desktop computer, my kids are Standard Users. When I log in to the computer and bring up iTunes, I am able to see and access our shared library of music on our Synology DS207+ NAS. When either of my kids log in and bring up iTunes, the DiskStation appears on the left side underneath 'shared' but when they click on it, they are not able to access the music. A dialog box appears with the following message: 'the shared library "Disk Station" is not responding (-39). Check that any firewall software running on either the shared computer or this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.'
Their Standard User accounts can access the music on the NAS through mapped drives and windows explorer.
I am running CA (Computer Associates) Security Center and the firewall has the same rules in place for all of our logins. Here is the strange thing, when I change their account type from Standard User to Administrator, they are able to access the shared library of music, no more dialog box with that message. I change their account type back to Standard User and again, they are not able to access the music, and they get that message again.
When I am logged in and enter the 'netstat' command, I see the following entry under foreign address:
    NAS:3689 Established
When the kids are logged in, I see the following:
    NAS:microsoft-ds Established
I've tried a lot of different things, too numerous to even remember or mention, all with no success. Some troubleshooting measures include:
    - change the kids permissions to the music folder on the DiskStation from read only to read/write.
    - disabled (not uninstalling) tcpip v6.
    - tried every combination of new firewall rule, to include ports 3689, 5353 and every port (and range) in between.
    - file and printer sharing is off on the administrator account, and is off on the standard user(s) accounts, but enabling it does not allow access to the library.
    - uninstalled Bonjour but once I do that, I cannot see the shared library anymore.
    - upgraded Bonjour to the latest version but still no success.
If anybody reading this has other suggestions, please respond.

I actually followed this, but I still had problems that I listed above. Is there any way that when you make changes to one account (even if there is only one main account where changes are made), the changes are automatically (or at least easily) applied to the other user accounts?

  • One iPod, Two Computers, Two Countries.

So, I'm sure this has been hashed to death elsewhere, and this will either turn into a rant, or there will be a solution. So, here we go.
I'm an exchange student in Finland, and about 2 months after I got here, my iPod was hooked up my laptop, which then froze and completely wiped out my entire iPod of music. Absolutely blank. So, I've since gotten more music for the stupid thing. Now I'm just worried about when I go home and having that +stupid as ****+ message about "already sync'd with one library, delete everything to continue". I've gotten it here with my boyfriend's computer.
See, thing is, I'm not staying home. I will only be there for about a month and a half. And I cannot put all the music that I had on my home computer onto my laptop, because there is simply not enough room (I had over 12,000 songs, about 47 GB).
Now, if there's a way to have music for my library on an external drive and never have it actually taking up space on my laptop, then I suppose I could live. Please, dear god, tell me that is a viable option. I've been going nuts without my music.

I have two computers and one iPod.
I know I can use both of them with my iPod, as long
    as I add files manually.
Just wanted to know if there is a way to update it
automatically in a way that the files that came from
    the other computer aren't erased.
    Thanks
I also have two computers and one iPod. I have set up one computer to update library/playlists automatically, and have set up the iPod on the other computer for manual updates. Although the songs appear in iTunes, the playlists don't, and I can't move any songs to/from the computer/iPod. The manual says it can be done, but it isn't working. Have you been able to move songs to/from your iPod/computer since you set it up like that?

  • Two Users, One Shared Library, and iPod keeps being "reset".  Help.

My wife and I share the same Mac Mini. We have separate accounts, but use the same iTunes Library, which is on a shared volume. (This is a separate hard drive where all our music is kept.)
Here's the problem: Tunes keeps asking me to reset my wife's iPod every time I log in and open iTunes. Specifically it says "this iPod is linked to another library, do you want to overwrite..." etc. Interestingly enough, this does not happen with my Nano, which is also connected to the computer.
FYI, we each have our own playlists set up; does this indicate that our library is in fact not shared? The path to the music itself is the same as per the iTunes preferences...
    Thanks!

  • Library problems with two XP user accounts accessing music in shared folder

I'm sorry if this has already been answered; I have not been able to find the answer. My wife and I each have a different user account on the same Windows XP machine. I recently combined our iTunes libraries into the shared folder on the computer. I correctly pointed iTunes (in each of our accounts) to the correct location for the music files. I did an "Add Folder to Library" to make sure each account had all of the music. When I did this, I got duplicate listings of all of the songs that also had exclamation points. When I did a "Get Info" on these songs, I found that each song was correctly pointed to the correct file location. I laboriously deleted each "exclamation point" song one at a time (in each account). Now the problem I have is that whenever my wife or I close iTunes and the other person opens iTunes in their XP user account, none of the songs can be found. The best way I've been able to resolve this is to (unfortunately) delete the entire library, and do an "Add Folder To Library" to find all of the song locations and include all of the songs back into the library. Surely this can't be how this is supposed to work.
    So, my questions are:
    - Do I need to add new albums / songs one at a time to avoid duplicates (rather than use the "Add Folder" for the entire iTunes music folder again)?
    - How do I setup iTunes so that my wife and I can each go into iTunes in our seperate XP accounts and have all of our songs right where we left them (WITHOUT having to delete the entire libary and "add" again.)
FYI: I'm using the latest version of iTunes and (again) I'm using Windows XP.
My wife and I really want to each get a new iPod Nano, but if I can't trust iTunes... forget it.
    THANKS!!!

I have this setup at working. Two accounts with all files stored on a shared folder, mine is a network drive. Each account has its own library and can access all files. We also use one iTunes account for rare purchases.
This is how did initial setup:
Make a folder in the shared folder. I called mine itunes.
This is where iTunes stores its files.
With second account point iTunes at shared folder.
Import the folder you created earlier.
This worked for me without duplications. The only complication is that when importing from CD with one account the other doesn't know it. The other account must do import on the folder for the CD just imported. We keep track of this with a spreadsheet updated to show which account has which CD files.

  • Two ipods+ two xp users - one computer  = AAaarghhh

Please any help appreciated, i'm pulling my hair out over this.
My girlfriend has just moved in.
I've got an XP machine. I've set her up an account on my computer (admin level) and transfered all her music over.
She has an 4th gen Ipod, I have a 5th gen.
I WAS running itunes 7 with minor problems, but it wanted to update her ipod and after hearing bad things I decided to roll back to a pre-7 version.
I've uninstalled everything and re-installed and older six version, from around March '06.
I've converted both our libraries and they work on Itunes fine.
I connected my 5th gen and after a couple of false starts got it to acknowledge my ipod and I've succesfully updated.
HOWEVER if i connect my girlfriends ipod the computer doesn't even register it. i get repeated Bing-bong, Bong-bing's of a USB connection. Her itunes doesn't register a connection and the computer doesn't seem to hold a connection for a more than a couple of seconds before i get a "tick" and "ok to disconnect".
Can anybody tell me if they have got a similar set up that works, should i be installing a different itunes on each profile? is this a limitation of windows.
ANY help, hints tips advice MOST appreciated. I'm getting grief off the missus "oh yeah yours is OK but what about me"
    Thanks

To me this sounds like the problem is in her iPod. Did you try restoring her iPod or reseting it by holding enter and menu at the same time?
I'm not confident on the two iPod thing but I would assume that as long as she is in her XP account and you're in yours that iTunes should operate independently of each other's accounts (but I could be wrong).

  • One Ipod 2 Windows User Accounts

I set the IPOD up under my account. I would like to set the same IPOD up under my wifes account using the same music library. So If I make changes to the library under my account the next time the ipod syncs up under her account she will also get the changes. We both like the same music but I would like her to use it under her account with Outlook so she can download her calendar and contacts. Can this be done.
    Thanks

Unforentally this doesn't seem easily possible on Windows XP. To accomplish this you would need to make a system link in her music folder to yours so that they were one in the same or at least the subfolder iTunes was but it is possible. Note that my solution below is very dangerious and should not be tried if you have no clue what you are doing. What this basicly does is to link the same files on the hard drive to different paths. Anyway, this is possible on Unixes also and thus possible on a Mac OSX machine. On unixes/Mac OSX the command would be something like: ln -s filename linkname . Since you don't have a mac I will not go on too long on discuessing how you would need to link it on that system.
Ok now on to doing it on Windows:
Please Note: that this will only work on an NTFS formatted Hard Disk.
Also note: I have not tried this with iTunes managing the files so beware if that it may break the functionality so you may want to disable that first.
1)Make sure that she has read and write rights to your music folder
2)Delete the following files in your wife's iTunes subdirectory under My Music:(no quotes) "iTunes Music Library.xml" and "iTunes Library.itl"
3)As an administrator pull up a command line (Start->Run->cmd)
4)Type the following command:(replacing joe[I trashed my brothers iTunes library...] with your wife's username and andy with your username)
    fsutil hardlink create "D:\Documents and Settings\joe\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml" "D:\Documents and Settings\andy\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml"
5)Also type this command:(with the same changes)
    fsutil hardlink create "D:\Documents and Settings\joe\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl" "D:\Documents and Settings\andy\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl"
Now you have a shared iTunes Library. Sorry that I cannot help with the outlook part as I do not use it. You are on your own or you will need anothers help for that.
PS, Shortcuts on windows will not serve this function so you really have to do the above.

  • How do I delete one of two admin users in Mountain Lion?

    Hi,
I have just migrated data from my iMac (Snow Leopard) to a new Macbook Pro (10.8). When setting up the computer at the Apple store, I chose my name and surname to set the computer (icon image is an eagle from the Apple library).
When I then migrated the data (via external backup and using migration assistant) to the new Macbook, I was prompted to rename the user account ("the user account that you are transferring has the same name as an existing account on your computer. you can't have two user accounts with same name on your computer"). So I renamed the account differently.
All my data has migrated correctly, including my emails. But I cannot see my personal icon in my mailboxes in Mail, I still see the image of the eagle. I went into system preferences and wanted to delete the original admin user account (the one with the eagle image) but it is greyed out and I cannot delete it.
What is happening exactly? Why do I see the icon of the other admin user account in my mail and not the one I used on my old iMac. How can I delete this user account? Is there a particular reason why I couldn't delete this account?
thanks for any guidance I can get on this

  • One Ipod - Two computers - Songs have seperated

    Hi There,
Hope somebody can help!! I have managed a while ago to move my itunes from one computer to another and everything worked hunky dory for a while however now all of a sudden the music that was on my original computer (computer 1) has dissappeared from my ipod. When I try to select and play the song using itunes on the 2nd comptuer it says the file is missing etc..... you can still see all the tracks but you cant play any of them and also they dont appear on the ipod.
I basically have two computers... computer one that has all my original songs on it and computer two which has everything I have downloaded since I got the 2nd computer. It still shows the computer 1 itunes in the library however they dont play or show up on the ipod.
I now have a third computer and I want to take all the itunes from both computers and move it on to the new computer. How on earth do I do this? I dont want to sit and put everything onto CDs...
Everytime I plug my ipod into the first computer it uploads all those songs, then If I plug it into computer two it wipes the computer one songs and replaces with computer two songs. I was driven up the wall with this last night. Argh... any ideas?

How did you "move" the songs to computer #2?
It sounds like what happened is you put them onto an external hard drive, or other storage format (CDR, DVD-R, etc), and added them to Computer #2's library. But the option to 'Copy added items to iTunes Music folder' is not checked in your preferences. So what happens is it adds the titles to your library but doesn't actually copy them to your computer #2 hard drive. So when the external drive, DVD-R etc. was removed from the system, iTunes no longer has access to the media files.

  • One iPod, two PCs.  iPod no longer recognized on on PC after latest updater

I have a 4G 20GB with color display that I sync to 2 PCs; my DT at home where my music library is, and my office laptop where I manage Podcasts.
About 2 weeks ago, after updating to iT6 (6.0.3) and the 1-10 updater, my laptop stopped recognizing my iPod - I get the message "USB Device not recognized". My DT sees the iPod fine.
I have tried all the R's twice, no help. Restoring and re-loading the library allowed it to sync 2-3 times, but now I am back where I started. I cannot afford the time to re-load 18GB every time I want updated podcasts on my iPod, and do not want to use my dt (actually my kid's PC) every time I want to get new podcasts.
    Any suggestions? TIA

That's what i was afraid of...but that's extra work and doesn't allow you to jump to a certain track.
Thanks for the response- sounds like I either have to settle for keeping the iPod i've got and never putting new music onto it...or break down and spend the money on a new one. This one is barely past its warranty, tho, so it's tough to spend that kind of $ yet again for another iPod that won't last very long.
Does anyone know of any 3rd party repair people who can fix iPod touch?

  • One ipod two computers need help please

I have two computers and 1 ipod 60gb video.Computer #1 is my old computer that stores my videos and music files (about 500 total)It has itunes and quicktime installed on it.I just bought a new sony laptop computer and I installed itunes and quicktime on it as well.I have been using my new computer to download all my new and resent music and videos files and storeing them on the new computer.Well I have about 100 or more music files on it now.My question is how do I transfer the new files on my new computer without deleting my old files on my old computer.I do not want to tranfer the files from old computer on to the new one.If I plug in the ipod to the new computer that does not have the old music files from the old computer then all my old music files will be deleted right since it updates the ipod automatactly itunes will detect that the old files are not on the new computer. How can I tranfer my new files to my ipod????I dont want to put my old music files on my new computer.Im new to the ipod world but i have read a bit on the discossions segment. Please please help any body that can give any suggestions.

I new to this so I'm not sure if this will work.I have been playing and trying different thing. Try making a new playlist, make sure that the music/book you want to add is in that playlist, and update just that playlist, under your preferences. When you are done you will have to change your preference to Manual update. This way I'm just uploading the new stuff and leaving the info that is on the iPod is not effected. I just added a couple of books on CD, listened to them while I ripped some more CD's I have into different playlists, and then added then later. Not sure if it will work with two computers. Right now I'm just working on my laptop, desktop is down and I have not replaced it yet. I hope this helps.

  • One iPod, two computers....

I may be slightly naive here, but I have just bought a new computer and would like to transfer my existing iTunes library already on my 80GB iPod (and synced with my old, slow now defunct laptop), but the iTunes system is not letting me do this. Am I missing something fundamental here? Surely I should be able to transfer my library to a new computer. What have people done with the new iPads -they must be able to transfer their libraries from their old computers to their new iPads?
I look forward to hearing from someone shortly.

What you do is this. locate your iTunes folder; under Program Files...? (not too sure on PC)
Then find the 'iTunes Media' folder. It will be HUGE. (especially if you have films, music etc. Copy this folder to your new pc (this may be tricky... directly via cable or via external hdd however you can).
Install iTunes on your new pc and when it asks you whether you want it to look for music say no. Then drag your whole iTunes media folder into the itunes folder and overwrite the new one (empty) with your old one (HUGE).
Be sure not to delete the folder off your old laptop until you're sure that it has worked.
    Happy Hols
