Shared memory in Threads

Can anyone suggest how to declare a shared memory segment for a multi-threaded implementation?

Not true, it may be half the point, the other half would be that threads saves resources, i.e. if you have 20 threads doing unrelated work without ever having to communicate with each other, there would still be a point to use threads instead of 20 separate processes.That is only true on operating systems where the code and other "constant" tables etc. of multiple processes from the same binary are not automatically shared. OS'es with this architectual shortcoming are mercifully on their way out of the marketplace ;-)

  • Disp+work stop because of shared memory?

    Hello Gurus, I have an SAP server that will not start. It was running previously, but after a parameter update and an instance restart, I cannot get the dispatcher running.
    System is Windows 2012 Server, MSSQL 2008 R2, 16 Core 132 GB RAM.
    I believe it is related to shared memory overlapping somehow, but  I am not sure how to resolve or investigate. I have had issues previously with memory overlap halting SAP servers with Diagnostics Agents, but this server is not currently running any DAA. It is running SAPRouter and some SAP Web Dispatcher instances.
    I will include my trace files below:

    Hi Alwina, here is the DEV_ICM trace:
    From this trace, it appears that it is listening to 65000?
    Netstat shows that the system is listening to 127.0.0.1:65000 .
    Other SAP ports show listening on 0:0:0:0:xxxx , is ICM listening on 127 a problem?

    You should say that "It may be Control File problem", but you shouldn't say that "it's due to Control File" problem

  • (HELP) ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist

    Contributors,
    I am a newbie in Oracle and have oracle database installed and working as expected until few days ago. One day i was getting these ugly messages when connecting via SQLplus
    ERROR:
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
    ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
    Process ID: 0
    Session ID: 0 Serial number: 0I did some searches on this topic but haven't found solutions.
    * Some suggested to check[b] environment variables ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID : my ORACLE_HOME is fine, and i DO NOT have ORACLE_SID on the day i realize the problem.
    I am not sure if ORACLE_SID variable is usually exist when my database was up and running. So i set ORACLE_SID yet did not help.
    * Some said check if the required services are running :
    - OracleOraDb11g_home1TNSListener : RUNNING
    - OracleServiceORCL : RUNNING
    * Other said that they have the same problem, but everything back to normal after several hours without anything configured / changed (miraculous)
    * I tried to restart or shut down, but no luck
    * In the same thread few days ago, Vlado helped me with suggestion to acces ADRCI and type SHOW PROBLEM also SHOW INCIDENT
    but the reply is DIA-48494: ADR home is not set, the corresponding operation cannot be done* Other implied to check the .ora files in NETWORK\ADMIN. I will post it (TNSNAMES.ORA, LISTENER.ORA, SQLNET.ORA) after this.
    My platform and some info :
    * OS : MS Windows Vista Ultimate
    * Oracle Database 11g Release 1 (11.1.0.6.0) Enterprise/ Standard Edition for Microsoft Windows 32-bit
    Mostly i used SQLplus and SQLdeveloper, for developing procedures/ functions/ packages in Oracle Spatial.
    Also, am running it in one laptop (server and client altogether).
    There is only one database in the Laptop (no other oracle database).
    How to fix this ? Please kindly help me.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Damon

  • Cannot attach data store shared-memory segment using JDBC (TT0837) 11.2.1.5

    Hi,
    I found the thread Cannot attach data store shared-memory segment using JDBC (TT0837) but it can't help me out.
    I encounter this issue in Windows XP, and application gets connection from jboss data source.

    I am confused that if I use jdbc, there is no such error.
    Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection("url", "username", "password");
    Regards,

    I think error 8 is
    net helpmsg 8
    Not enough storage is available to process this command.
    If I'm wrong I'm happy to be corrected. If you reduce the PermSize and TempSize of the datastore (just as a test) does this allow JBOSS to load it?
    You don't say whether this is 32bit or 64bit Windows. If it's the former, the following information may be helpful.
    "Windows manages virtual memory differently than all other OSes. The way Windows sets up memory for DLLs guarantees that the virtual address space of each process is badly fragmented. Other OSes avoid this by densely packing shared libraries.
    A TimesTen database is represented as a single contiguous shared segment. So for an application to connect to a database of size n, there must be n bytes of unused contiguous virtual memory in the application's process. Because of the way Windows manages DLLs this is sometimes challenging. You can easily get into a situation where simple applications that use few DLLs (such as ttIsql) can access a database fine, but complicated apps that use many DLLs can not.
    As a practical matter this means that TimesTen direct-mode in Windows 32-bit is challenging to use for those with complex applications. For large C/C++ applications one can usually "rebase" DLLs to reduce fragmentation. But for Java based applications this is more challenging.
    You can use tools like the free "Process Explorer" to see the used address ranges in your process.
    Naturally, 64-bit Windows basically resolves these issues by providing a dramatically larger set of addresses."

  • SAP installtion stopped - error cant create shared memory

    Dear All,
    Greetings!
    We are trying to install SAP ECC 6.0 IDES system on Windows 2003 x64 Server and DB2 9.1, during the process of installation - in the step of Start Instance. The sapinst Gives Up! the process since the enqueue server is found in stopped state when the instance tries to start up.
    I found the below given error message from the Developer Trace files of the enqueue server.
    [Thr 1384] Sat May 09 18:21:13 2009
    [Thr 1384] *** ERROR => ShmDelete: Invalid shared memory Key=34. [shmnt.c      719]

    To note - we had a virus attack on the server recently and an Anti-Virus tool was used to clean the server, after that I found most of the SAP folders in Read-Only mode.
    I suspect any causes of the same for the above mentioned ACCESS_DENIED error. Currently I have allocated 28GB of swap size, but the SAP instance is not able to create a shared memory from the same I hope.

    Please help me with your suggestions for the workaround,
    - How will I be able to enable the swap size of the server to be used by the SAP instance?
    - Is this the effect of the anti-virus or an aspect in windows server to change the folders and files to read-only after a virus attack?
    I have tried the possibilities of adding more shared memory, removing the shared memory and restarting the OS and assigning back the same, but these dint prove useful.
    Kindly help me with your suggestions.
    Thank you
    Regards,
    Vineeth

    Hi,
    I would suggest you to go to run > services.msc
    now try to manually stop / start the SAP<SID>_<nr> services. are you able to start it properly? If you get error here, that means SAP services not able to start as it has permission problem.
    login with <sid>adm & reregister the service by running sapstartsrv.exe in <drive>:\usr\sap\SID\sys\exe. after you give the parameters and press ok, wait for sometime for the 'success' message.
    once its done, then start sap in MMC.
    another thread talks about similar kind of problem.

  • One More Time: Shared Memory

    I've heard the designers of Java (Gosling, Et. Al.) are against supporting the concept of shared memory natively.
    However, have they given any more thought to simple native shared memory support?
    I know there are several "C" libraries with JNI that provide shared memory for Java. I just really would like native support.

    I like it. Although it does leave a file around that I have to delete.
    Any issues with this method?
    BTW, here is the code from the reference:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.nio.*;
    import java.nio.channels.*;
    import java.util.*;
    class TestShared1 {
    public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
    Random r = new Random();
    //-- Opening the file
    RandomAccessFile raf = new RandomAccessFile ("myshared", "rw");
    FileChannel fc = raf.getChannel();
    //-- Getting the memory-mapped byte buffer
    MappedByteBuffer mbb = fc.map (FileChannel.MapMode.READ_WRITE, 0, 1024);
    //-- Writing a random integer in the first 4 positions of the memory
    //-- every second
    for (int i = 0; i < 1000; ++i) {
    try { Thread.sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException ex) {}
    int x = r.nextInt();
    mbb.putInt(0, x);
    System.out.println ("Written to the shared memory: " + x);
    fc.close();
    raf.close();
    and
    import java.io.*;

    class TestShared2 {

  • Shared memory error with jcmon

    When I attempt to launch jcmon.bat and access local administration, I get the following error:
    ERROR => Can't attach to administration shared memory (rc=3) [jcmonxx.c   219]
    Any ideas?  I'm pretty sure that server0 is not running, but since I can't log into the Visual Administrator or jcmon I don't know for sure.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi all,
    jcmon.exe pf=I:usrsapVIKSYSprofileVIK_DVEBMGS00_VIKLAB
    You will find the below, see the server0 is stopped. Thats what is not starting in our case, and that is the j2ee engine I suppose. Because the dispatcher and the SDM starts as can be seen. If you attempt to restart the process from the jcom administration menu, it wont because if it did then we would not have this problem in the first place. The sapinst tool is calling this.

    I think the problem here seems to be the wrong JDK version.
    Take this very seriously. I think this might save days of trouble,
    SAP faces installation problem if you have an SDK/JDK lesser than 1.4.2_11. I did not take this very seriously and have 1.4.2_10 but then this thread below clearly says that there are problem with installations when you use 1.4.2_10.  Useful for guys stuck in the same hole. This might be the reason why the java server process does not start while the java dispatcher and SDM starts.

    it might help.
    but mine is a EP system (Java Only) so not sure if its applicable in my case
    You should always have latest kernel on your system , irrespective of Runtime Engine (ABAP or JAVA).
    So go ahead and upgrade kernel to latest available for your release.

  • Array as Shared Memory - performance bottleneck

    Array as shared memory - performance bottleneck
    Hello,
    currently I work on a multi-threaded application, where many threads work on shared memory.
    I wondering why the application doesn't become faster by using many threads (I have i7 machine).
    Here is an example for initialization in single thread:
              final int arrayLength = (int)1e7;
              final int threadNumber = Runtime.getRuntime().availableProcessors();
              long startTime;
               * init array in single thread
              Integer[] a1 = new Integer[arrayLength];
              startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
              for(int i=0; i<arrayLength; i++){
                   a1[i] = i;
              System.out.println("single thread=" + (System.currentTimeMillis()-startTime));and here initialization with many threads:
               * init array in many threads
              final Integer[] a3 = new Integer[arrayLength];
              List<Thread> threadList = new ArrayList<Thread>();
              for(int i=0; i<threadNumber; i++){
                   final int iF = i;
                   Thread t = new Thread(new Runnable(){
                        @Override
                        public void run() {
                             int end = (iF+1)*offset;
                             if(iF==(threadNumber-1))
                                  end = a3.length;
                             for(int i=iF*offset; i<end; i++){
                                  a3[i] = i;
                   threadList.add(t);
              startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
              for(Thread t:threadList)
                   t.start();
              for(Thread t:threadList)
                   t.join();After execution it looks like this:
    single thread=2372
    many threads List=3760I have i7 4GB RAM
    System + Parameters:
    JVM-64bit JDK1.6.0_14
    -Xmx3g
    Why the executing of one thread is faster as executing of many threads?
    As you can see I didn't use any synchronization.
    Maybe I have to configure JVM in some way to gain wished performance (I expected the performance gain on i7 x8 times) ?

    Hello,
    I'm from [happy-guys|http://www.happy-guys.com] , and we developed new sorting-algorithm to sort an array on the multi-core machine.
    But after the algorithm was implemented it was a little-bit slower as standard sorting-algorithm from JDK (Array.sort(...)). After searching for the reason, I created performance tests which shows that the arrays in Java don't allow to access them by many threads at the same time.
    The bad news is: different threads slowdown each-other even if they use different array-objects.
    I believe all array-objects are natively managed by a global manager in JVM, thus this manager builds a global-lock for all threads.
    Only one thread can access any array at the same time!
    I used:
    Software:
    1)Windows Vista 64bit,
    2) java version "1.6.0_14"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)
    Hardware:

  • SAPOSCOL Problems with Shared Memory

    Has anyone had any problems in either starting the saposcol or with keeping it running?  We have noticed multiple problems for several years now, and are at a point where the saposcol is not running at all on any of our servers, nor can we start it running.
    We're seeing "SAPOSCOL not running ? (Shared memory not available)".  I am working with SAP with two different customer messages trying to determine why we cannot start the saposcol.

    Just when I thought I was getting a handle on useage of os shared memory (/dev/shm) ......
    Up unitl now, if did an 'ls -l /dev/shm', I would see segments for every running instance. That is, say I did a 'ps -ef | grep pmon' and had 'oradbA', 'oradbB' and 'oradbC' , a 'ls -l /dev/shm' would show a bunch of segments for each, 'oradbA', 'oradbB' and 'oradbC'. Now I take a look a this one server, and I only see shm segments for only one of the running instances.
    And no, it's not a matter of them scrolling off the screen. I'm using putty, and logging the entire session, so I can look at the log file and see evertthing, not just what's in the screen buffer. or if I grep the ouput ...

My apologies for not being able to answer your question (as I am lagging behind you when it comes to *nix OS level knowledge) but I am curious to know how this thread develops. Tanel poder's blog post, mentioned here, is, as always, excellent (and I would like to say I understood every bit of it ;) ). • How do I set the shared memory and semaphore Parameters

    Hi, everyone:
    Could someone help me on this? The Oracle Installation Guide

    : Best regards,
    : Ari
    I have a setup similar to yours (384 MB instead of 512 MB),
    and I spent some time looking at the parameters.
    You CANNOT use the value for SHMMAX from the Oracle manual!
    As it says at http://jordan.fortwayne.com/oracle/oralinux.html
    "Should you decided to change these parameters, if you set
    the SHMMAX to what Oracle says, you are telling the system
    to allow a shared memory segment to grow as large as 4 Gigs.
    Many users have reported problems setting the value this
    high."
    Sounds like you are another one of those users, eh?
    If you read on down, the guy who wrote that web page never
    used over 128 MB for SHMMAX. I'd take a strong hint from that.
    =====
    Oracle wants you to use 4GB-1 as the SHMMAX value. That
    equates to (1<<32)-1. As we shall see, that is not allowed
    without "breaking the rules" for the i386 architecture.
    If you carefully read through the header file, you will find
    out that the **actual maximum value** for SHMMAX is 256 MB.
    You can tell this two ways. Take a look at the file at:
    /usr/src/linux/include/asm/shmparam.h
    Near the top of the file is:
    /* address range for shared memory attaches if
    no address passed to shmat() */
    #define SHM_RANGE_START 0x50000000
    #define SHM_RANGE_END 0x60000000
    Note that the above is 256 MB (0x10000000), or (1<<28). This
    is one potential source of trouble. I don't know if some other
    files someplace else in the kernel specify uses for address
    ranges adjacent to the above range, which I take to be the
    "practical maximum" without redefining that range. Personally,
    I wouldn't want to mess with the above unless I **really**
    knew what I was doing (and I'll be the first to admit I don't).
    =====
    Farther down you will see some more lines (not together)
    that look like this:
    #define SHMID_BITS 7
    #define SHMIDX_BITS 15
    * SHMID_BITS + SHMIDX_BITS must be <= 24 on the i386 and
    * SHMMAX <= (PAGE_SIZE << SHMIDX_BITS).
    #define SHMMAX 0x2000000 /* max shared seg
    size (bytes) */
    Now, 7 + 15 is 22, so you could go up a couple of bits if you
    had to. To avoid making the table any larger, I would suggest:
    #define SHMIDX_BITS 17
    But, 17 turns out to produce a result larger than the "practical
    maximum" (256 MB) above. To see why takes a little more
    explaining.
    If you don't change this at all, then the maximum possible
    value for SHMMAX is 4096 [the PAGE_SIZE) << 15 [_SHM_IDX_BITS],
    or rather (1<<27).
    Now, that is exactly half of the (1<<28) "practical maximum" I
    mentioned above.
    So, if you always want the maximum amount of shared memory,
    then change the definition of SHMMAX to the following:
    #define SHMMAX (PAGE_SIZE<<_SHM_IDX_BITS) /* max shared seg
    size (bytes) */
    That gives you 128 MB in and of itself (as compared with 32 MB
    as Red Hat 5.2 is delivered).
    If you want the full 256 MB that is allowed for in the memory
    map, then you need to also change:
    #define SHMIDX_BITS 16
    The above value is **exactly** what is recommended on the web
    page you were following (above).
    If you want to keep going up, you will need to change the
    memory space allocated for shared memory as defined by
    SHM_RANGE_START and SHM_RANGE_END, something I advise against.
    =====
    Even on a machine with 512 MB of "real" memory, I find it hard
    to believe that there would be any substantial benefit to
    having a maximum shared memory space greater than 256 MB. The
    reason is that Oracle can use multiple shared memory spaces.
    It requires a minimum of ten (10), according to the installation
    manual, but the Red Hat 5.2 distribution supplies SHMMNI (128)
    of them. That will allow each Oracle process to have a total
    of up to 32 GB of shared memory (128 times 256 MB) and all it
    asks for is 40 GB (10 times 4 GB), so it has plenty, IMHO.
    =====
    Let me say a few more words about the web page you were using
    for configuration advice. That person actually **reduced** the
    amount of shared memory segments by specifying **lower values**
    for SHMMNI and SHMSEG.
    I'd **STRONGLY** recommend **NOT CHANGING** those other values!
    Its my understanding that Oracle can make up for the smaller
    maximum shared memory segment size by using more shared memory
    segments. So, if you reduce those, you are essentially shooting
    yourself in the foot by taking away what you are giving with
    increasing the maximum segment size.
    =====
    Good luck, and may this farce be with you!

  • Internal table in shared memory

    I'm using an internal table in a shared memory area. Depending on the existance of rows i would like to modify these rows or appending new rows.
    So i need read and write access.
    I tried to use attach_for_write( ) but after that i cannot read the table, sy-subrc is always 4.
    So i tried to read the table with attach_for_read( ) first. I can read it, and the result is now sy-subrc = 0.
    But after attaching the table via attach_for_write i'm unable to modify the table, how can i do this?

    myshmhandle = zca_shm_repstat_area=>attach_for_update( ).
    CREATE OBJECT myroot AREA HANDLE myshmhandle.
    read table myshmhandle->root->it_stat with key mandt = sy-mandt report = sy-repid
      ASSIGNING <p>.
    if sy-subrc = 0.
        <p>-freq    = wa_stat-freq + 1.
        <p>-ldate   = sy-datum.
        <p>-ltime   = sy-uzeit.
        <p>-userid  = sy-uname.
        ins = abap_false.
      else.
        wa_stat-mandt   = sy-mandt.
        wa_stat-report  = sy-repid.
        wa_stat-freq    = 1.
        wa_stat-ldate   = sy-datum.
        wa_stat-ltime   = sy-uzeit.
        wa_stat-userid  = sy-uname.
        ins = abap_true.
        append wa_stat to myroot->it_stat.
      endif.
    myshmhandle->set_root( myroot ).
    myshmhandle->detach_commit( ).
    Running the first time, everyting is ok. Running the second time the read will give back sy-subrc = 0 and <p> contains the correct values. after running to the end the table has no rows at all and is inconsitent I cant see what i'm doing wrong.
