Shared Music Library

For some reason after updating to iTunes 6.0 when I want to access other peoples library I get: Shared music library “xxx” not accessible for unknown reason (-3259)

I am also having this issue lately, but I am set up properly, I'm sure. the differencer may be that my wife has my old iphone now but i would think syncing would work. I don'ty see newly purchased music while viewing the music library on her user profile like I do on the main user profile. Not sure what changed, if anything.

  • ATV3 New Update Breaks Home Sharing Music Library Streaming (Again)

Windows 7 user here using Apple TV 3.  Overall, I love the device, when it works right.
When I first got it, using the Home Sharing Music Library feature from the Apple TV (in other words, pulling content from the computer) was broken in that it would play for a while, then suddenly stop.  There was a *huge* thread on this where many people seemed to experience it.
I was so happy when the last AppleTV update fixed this (for me anyways, and I'd guess many others) - since then (months) it worked flawlessly until today, when the ATV prompted me for an update.  Now it's even worse than before and appears to play the first song, then immediately get stuck on the second.  =(  Anyone else having this issue?
Fortunately, my workaround works, which is "pushing" content from my computer, but this isn't nearly as convenient for a variety of reasons (including much less control via the AppleTV if I'm just relaxing and listening).
I truly hope Apple can resolve this quickly, since they had it nailed before...

Luke, I can confirm the bugs with the latest AppleTV software, version 5.  It doesn't matter if it is an ATV2 or ATV3 because they are running the same OS version.  There are Home Sharing problems because immediately after I updated my ATV2, I started having Home Sharing problems when trying to play any video from my iMac.  The link between the Mac and the ATV2 breaks and it bumps back to the main menu with no computers displayed.  Quitting iTunes and re-launching fixes the problem, but it isn't guaranteed.  Sometimes you will get lucky and it will remain connected, other times, it will break the link again, after another 5 minutes.  And, it won't remember your place in the video when the link breaks.
The other major bug is that TV shows are displayed out of order.  Apple has confirmed the TV show order bug, but haven't heard anything on the Home Sharing bug.  I have reported that one to Apple.  Hopefully we will get a software update soon.

  • I am unable to drag songs from a shared music library between computers.  This was working until about a month ago.  I have updated to the newest versions of Itunes on both computers (a macbook and an older Toshiba satellite).  I have also rebooted both.

I am unable to drage songs from a shared music library between computers.   This used to work perfectly until a month ago.   I have installed the newest version of Itunes on both computers and have rebooted them, but nothing happens when I try to drag a song to another playlist or another shared folder.  Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Sharing Music Library with multiple accts on a computer

I've tried following the instructions to share a single music library between 2 users accounts on the same comupter. While I've moved the music library to the Shared Document folder, only one user can see the library.
Is there something else I can try/check?
    Thanks!

    Hi, jstock.
It sounds like you're following the instructions in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Make sure you follow the steps in the last section To listen to another account's music files which brings the files from the Shared Music folder into the other account's iTunes Library.

  • Sharing music library between users

I have just upgraded my Powerbook to Leopard.
I have added two new users.
How can I share my iTunes music library with them.
On my administrator login and on theirs I have gone to iTunes preferences and ticked
    Look for shared library
Share my Library on my local network
however they do not get access to my music
    thanks
    Pete

    Thank you.
OK I followed the instructions in the link.
I moved the administrators iTunes Music folder to the computer / Users / Shared folder.
Then I changed the Preference in the admin's iTunes to choose the new location of the folder as instructed. (I chose the Shared folder as the location, not the iTunes Music folder itself)
Then I got a dialog box asking if I wanted iTunes to organize the files and I clicked Yes.
    (then I rebooted iTunes)
Then I looked in the Shared folder and was surprised to see that the Shared folder was full of lots of folders of artists names which contain music files. Also in there was the iTunes Music folder which contained a few folders of artists names.
Is this correct? Should all the artist folders be inside the iTunes folder?
Lastly the sharing does not seem to have worked. When I log in as one of the other (non admin) users, and change their iTunes Preferences to locate their ITunes folder as the computer Shared folder, then reboot iTunes, the music is NOT accessible to them. (no music showing in their library)
In the link instructions it says to "follow the above steps for all users who want to share their music"
well as mentioned I changed the non admin users iTunes Preferences to specify the new location inside the Shared folder
but if I also try to follow the step of moving the non admin users iTunes Music folder to the computer Shared folder it asks me if I want to replace it - so I assume I should not duplicate this step.
    PHEW !!
Also I noticed in the admins home folder there is also a Shared folder which seems to be a different one to the computer Shared folder. (this one contains other music files)
    THANKS FOR YOUR HELP

  • Can't find shared music library on ipad 2 since ios 5

Since Music App has replaced iPod App on iPad2 I can't find out how to go to shared music to listen to music off of iMac.
    Thanks

I had the same issue with my iPhone 5 running latest iOS update 6.1
After reading this forum I figured disabling home sharing and re-enabling the home sharing under settings music might work and it did. After re-enabling I could see my few hundred albums again instead of just a dozen. Hope this works for others too. And that apple might provide a fix for this behaviour of home sharing.

  • Using iPod to listen to Shared Music Library

Is there any way to use the iPod Touch to listen to music stored on my desktop Mac? The idea is that I'll hook up the iPod to my living room stereo, but with only 8gb, it doesn't have enough room for my whole music library. I've got a wifi network. This seems like something that should "just work" with Apple products, but I can't find a way. What's the deal?
    Thanks!

    yes.
to do that, you need Airfoil or AirPhones.

  • Moving songs from a shared music library on my laptop to my desktop

I have the music libraries shared. But I cannot drag songs from my laptop music to iTunes in my desktop. Why not? These are not iTunes purchased songs but songs downloaded off internet in flac format, converted to aiff and loaded into iTunes on my laptop. I can play them but I cannot drag them into the desktop library. I want to put them on my iPod, which syncs with the desktop. I guess I'll have to burn them to cd to put them on the desktop. But it seems I should be able to copy from one shared library to another.

I have the music libraries shared.
Just to be clear, there is plain ol' sharing, and then there is "home sharing", the latter being an extension of the former. So, you turn on sharing, and then enable "home sharing", per those other articles I referenced in a prior post.
But if you are technically proficient, as JG said, copying the files using the Mac Finder is the best option. Preserves playlists, rankings, artwork, etc. The iTunes "home sharing" is really well suited for keeping two machines libraries synced and is probably a tad easier, but for that initial copying/moving of a library, doing it at the Mac Finder option is best, if a tad more complicated.

  • Sharing music library

All of my music is on pc 1. We have a multimedia pc in the living room and wish to share all my music from pc 1 through mmpc in the living room. I enabled sharing in both iTunes and the music from pc 1appears on mmpc. The problem is I can't create a playlist "from selected". Can I create playlists? Can I also sync my apple device through the mmpc? Thanks

Also, is there a way to stream all my music to my iPad in the other room?

  • Several computers sharing the music library stored on a network disk: howto

    Hi,
We currently have iTunes set up on a (laptop) computer. The music folder location is on a network disk (NAS). Everything has been working fine.
We recently purchased two more laptops for other family members and would like to set up the iTunes for those computers to use the same existing music folder. Is this possible? I understand that we must authorize all computers using the library to be able to play purchased music.
So far we have synced all our ipods using the one and only computer. In the future each of us will use their own laptop for syncing. Will this cause any problems regarding to the shared music library?
I guess that the playlists are stored in the itunes files, not in the music library. Due to this the playlists must be created on the new computers after the itunes installation.
    Best regards,
    ikl

You are most of the way there. The only issue will be that anything done by one machine will not be automatically updated to others. Files deleted from NAS by one machine will not be available to others anymore leading to ! next to track names if in libraries on other machines.
Files added by one machine will have to be added to the libraries of the other machines using 'add file to library' or 'add folder to library' options on menu.
Podcast subscriptions should be only files that will duplicate on NAS. Podcast subscriptions are individual to each library even if stored to same location. The files themselves well get numbered. The library will know which file to use. This allows episodes to be deleted without affecting other users.

  • IPad Music app crashes while trying to choose my shared Mac music library

IPad Music app crashes while trying to choose my shared Mac music library.  Only a few of the artists show up and if I try a search, the App crashes.

Thanks.  This got all of the artists to show up but the music app still crashes when I search the shared music library.

  • Sharing Music Help! 2 Users Accounts, 2 iTunes accounts, share SOME music??

Hi - I'm new to Mac and iTunes all together (finally joined the cult... and love it!)
Anyways, My ideal setup is to have 2 User Accounts and 2 Separate iTunes Accounts so my bf and I can buy our own music, obtain separate libraries, yet share SOME music. I want to see all of MY music in the Music Library when I log in, but I still want to be able to transfer some of his music to my phone's playlist and vice versa.
Currently, our Itunes libraries are stored on each of our user profiles /users/name/music. When I log into iTunes, I see my music and [if his user account is logged on] I can see his under SHARED. But that doesn't allow me to transfer his music to my playlists and in the end, my phone.
I read Apple's how-to on pointing each of our iTunes to Users/Shared and but then whenever I'm in iTunes it would just be a huge pool of both our music and I have to weed through all of his.
Any suggestions on how we can both maintain our separate libraries/accounts but share some music (not just listen to each other's music).

In the Finder. I should have said "In the Finder, create the folder /Users/Shared/Music".
In case it wasn't clear, all of the instructions should be carried out in the Finder. iTunes should definitely not be running when you move your library and create the aliases.
    A few additional points:
    1. There's nothing significant about the folder location /Users/Shared/Music. You can substitute the name of any folder you want, provided all users will be able to read and write to it.
    2. Beware of having two or more users accessing your shared Music library *at the same time*. (Since you mentioned you want to share your music between two users on a single MacBook, I assumed only one user would access the library at a time.) This only becomes an issue if at some time in the future you share a library in this way between two computers over a networked drive. If two or more users are making simultaneous changes to the same iTunes library, they will stomp all over each other's changes, and very likely corrupt the library. Note that it's also possible to corrupt your music library if you both are simultaneously logged in on your MacBook via "Fast User Switching", and are both simultaneousy running iTunes and making changes to the library. So don't do that. (Not that you ever would.)

  • IOS6 Music app closes when trying to search home shared music

My iTunes music media is on my iMac (mountain lion) with iTunes home sharing enabled, when using the iPad 3 (IOS6) ,every time I try to search the home shared music library, the Music app closes on the iPad. The search feature does work on my iPhone 4s running IOS6.

    1. Double-click the Home button to reveal Task Bar at bottom
    2. Hold the Music app down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close app
    4. Re-launch the app and test

  • ITunes crashes when sharing Music

When i want to connect from my iBook to my Mini for sharing iTunes Music, it says "Library is loading" for a long time. And then, when it should show the remote library, it shows nothing. iBook says that there are no Shares in my network any more, and on the Mini, iTunes is not responding any more, so i have to restart it.
When i want to connect from the Mini to the iBook, it is the same.
But, when i only share a playlist instead of my whole library, everything works fine.
Is there any network timeout? I've reinstalled iTunes and fixed my disk permissions, but it won't work.
What else can i do? I need this sharing feature very much...

    I get this too.
Running an MDD down in my office. I play iTunes on that most of the day.The library is on an external 250GB firewire drive. Then I come up to the house and run iTunes on old iMac running 10.3.9, iTunes 6.0.1 via an Airport Express, from the G4 MDD's shared library.
Most of the time, no problem. However, if, from the iMac, I double-click on a different song from the one that's currently playing on the shared music library I lose the connection. Can't start it up again without trogging down to the office and restarting iTunes on that machine (restarting the iMac has no effect). I can still see and play from other shared libraries up at the house, though.
Once, during this issue, I got an error message (can't connect to server, may be a firewall problem). Can't remember the error number, unfortunately...
