Shared PC stuff dissappears when using Airport anything.

I have a cable modem hooked to a Linksys router and switch. Several PC's sharing disks and printers are hooked to the switch. When I plug my Mac directly into the switch it 'sees' the shared disks on the PC's but not the printer (another topic). When I unplug the Mac and put the same wire into my new Airport Extreme instead, the Mac hooks up to the internet fine, but the shared disks from the PC's are gone. Is it a port issue and on the AE or the Linksys? I swear I'm a dummy at this.
I love my new Macbook Pro, but there are still a few things to do.
1. Can see shared pc drives but not if using Airport Extreme or Express to connect to my home network.
2. USB drive works only when plugged into Mac. Not when plugged into PC or Airport Extreme.
3. Shared printers on the PC's can't be found by the Mac no matter what I try.
Maybe this isn't all for this topic, but then again, maybe they are related.
Mac newbie, MissMyApple][+ (it's in a box in the attic)
Thanks in advance for any help.

When I unplug the Mac and put the same wire into my new Airport Extreme instead, the Mac hooks up to the internet fine, but the shared disks from the PC's are gone. Is it a port issue and on the AE or the Linksys?
In this network configuration, you, effectively, have two routers, the Linksys and the AEBS...which will create two networks, and why your Mac can't "see" the PCs. To fix this, you just need to set up the AEBS as a bridge so that it acts like a wireless access point.
To set up the AEBS as a bridge, temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, using the AirPort Utility (found in /Applications/Utilities), make these settings:
Internet - Internet Connection tab
- Connection Sharing: Act as a bridge
- Click Update to apply the new settings.

Is there any way to stop the delay between different sets of speakers when using airport express?

Unfortunately, I don't have either a Slingbox or iHome speakers so I won't be able to reproduce any of the issues you are having. With the fact that you live in large apartment complex would still lead me to believe that Wi-Fi interference may be the reason that you are having streaming issues.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • IBook disappears from network when using Airport

Hi there. Until recently my wife and her iBook have happily shared files back and forth with my Mini, and she has been able to use my shared printer. Now, when she's connected to the internet through our Airport Graphite, our computers no longer show up on each other's network, and she can't find my shared printer.
I'm not sure if I have a software or hardware problem, but I can't figure it out on my own.
We have two desktops (a Mini and an eMac) connected to a cable modem through an ethernet hub. The Airport Graphite is also connected to the hub. The Airport is configured to distribute IP addresses, and ethernet client computers also share a single IP address (using NAT).
If we unplug the ethernet cable from our eMac and plug it into my wife's iBook, the iBook and Mini can once again "see" each other, and my wife can access my shared printer. When we unplug the ethernet from the iBook and go back to using the Airport, the iBook can still access the Internet, but it disappears from the local network.
I'm hoping there's a simple explanation that I'm missing. I'd be grateful for some help!
Mac Mini 1.2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Thanks so much for responding, Tesserax.
My hub is a "Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Hub," model EW5HUB.
The cable modem is plugged into the port called "Uplink." The Mini is plugged into port 1, the eMac into port 2, and the Airport into port 3.
The network has functioned properly in the past (the iBook used the printer plugged into the Mini, and we shared files back and forth). Recently, I had to reset the Airport, but I thought I had reconfigured it correctly. In short, Airport configuration would be my main suspect here.
I'm afraid I don't know what (if anything) is supplying NAT service. I assumed it was something the Airport does -- allowing it to sort out the flow of data to the various computers. The question is beyond my expertise level because I don't really understand what NAT service is. Is the problem in my Airport's Network configuration?
My ISP assigns IP addresses dynamically, so my Airport doesn't have a static IP address. However, my ISP allows for only two IP addresses, so I need my ethernet computers to also share the Airport's address.
I hope that, somewhere during my ramblings, a light has gone off in your more enlightened mind. Thanks again for your help!

  • Will Authortime shared assets be cached when using Incremental Compilation?

I'm learning about some new CS5.5 features (also found in CS6).
I have some projects with extremely large filesizes because of embedded videos (its not an option to break these out externally - long story). Some compiled SWFs can reach 120MB+
CS5.5 adds a feature where you can share an asset between two FLAs. My thought is to put each embedded videos in their own separate FLA files to speed up saving and editing.
Secondly, CS5.5 adds a feature called "Incremental Compilation" - you can set a cache size in the "Publish Cache" Preference setting. I haven't tried this yet, but I would think it would greatly improve rendering time when testing this movie. I have a machine with 16GB of RAM.
My question is if I use the Shared Asset feature, will it still be cached by incremental compilation?

    Maybe something interesting...
    When looking at article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982697/en-us
I saw that Outlook 2013 by default caches everything and that's what I wanted. I tested however adding this regkey to see what happened and after that the email shows up in the mailboxes... Somehow the mail from shared mailboxes doesn't want to be
    cached...
Does anyone know what this could be? I want everything to be cached, also the shared mailboxes but somehow this doesn't work and it does when using Outlook 2010....

  • When using airport express with magic jack it disconnects when i use the phone.

When the airport express is used with magic jack it disconnects internet service when i use the phone. That is with incomming or out going calls.

I went through that very same issue with two of my Samsung phones. ....my problem turned out to be corrupted files within my 1st phone programming due to a bad OS update
The second phone issue occurred because my phones data became corrupted by a mild virus  therefore it was necessary in both cases to replace the phones. ..
But,  there is also a third option,  try removing any recent apps you've added then turn your phone off and back on to refresh
Or try doing a factory rese, I know I realize how frustrating these are but,  in some cases it fixes the issue without additional challenges. ..
You should also add the Verizon protection and security app to your phone to prevent virus and other such problems from affecting your phone going forward. ...
The best thing about this app aside from its protection is that it also enables the user to easily save and transfer their phone content between phones and backs everything up to a minimum of 25GB of the cloud
But,  you also need to turn your android phone off at least once every 3-days to maintain a good connection to the Verizon network

  • D I need the firewall on in my Mac when using Airport extreme base station?

    Hi all;
Just wondering if it's necessary to turn on the firewall in my Mac when using the AEBS.
AEBS is connected to the net and then my Mac connects to AEBS.
    There's already a firewall built-in as I understand it.
    Thanks.

The operation of NAT and DHCP on the AEBS will prevent someone from the Internet directly accessing your Mac.
Enabling the firewall on your Mac would add some protection against someone local wirelessly accessing your Mac.

  • File sharing problem between XP and MAC when using Airport Extreme

I recently got a Time Machine to replace my flaky Linksys Wireless N router and since I've done that I can't connect to my PC running Windows XP and was able to before. I have made sure my firewall settings are correct and have gone through many different settings on Time Machine but still no luck.
I have my PC directly connected via ethernet to the Time Machine and my Mac is wireless. I'm able to ping the IP address of the Mac from my PC but can't ping in the opposite way.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!!

    btw the error is
"Attempting to copy to the disk "Guy_s iPod" failed. The file name was invalid."
    and then it says
"The iPod "Guy's iPod II" cannot be updated. The disk could not be read or written to."

  • Can't share files on a removable hard drive when using Airport Extreme

I connected a removable hard drive to the USB port on the Airport Extreme. I can see the hard drive under Disks in Airport Utility, but cannot view or share the files.
Note: I can share the files when I am connected directly to my MacBook Pro USB port.
    Please help.

    I have enabled file sharing.

  • Why are so many wireless clients seen when using airport utility?

When I open up the Airport Utility, I can see upwards of a dozen "wireless clients" connected to each of the two Airport Extremes that I have on my network. Some of these are known computers and iOS devices, but many of them have names that are IP addresses (like 10..0.0.3) or hexadecimal numbers (like 9C:FE:94:4B:75:FE). Not sure what these are. Can they slow down the network?

Take a few moments and count up the total number of wireless devices that you have.
In addition to computers, be sure to include printers, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, other Airport routers, other mobile devices, baby monitors, thermostats, etc......anything that uses a wireless signal from your network.
Some devices will be displayed by their name, others by assigned IP address and others by their MAC Address with 12 characters and colons.
Every device that is connected to your network uses up a certain amount of bandwidth, so the more devices that you have connected at one time, the slower the network will operate.
Unless you are lucky enough to have a very fast Internet connection plan with your provider, you may likely notice that browsing, email and other activities on the the wireless slow down when multiple devices are using the Internet, or you are copying files from one device to another over the network.
When you are ready, open AirPort Utility. Hold down the option key while you double click on your AirPort icon.
A window displaying wireless clients will be displayed. Compare the total of devices to your count. If you see more devices than you have, you may have an unwanted guest on your network. Change your wireless network password immediately.
Another thing that you can do is power off all of the wireless devices and then start them up one at a time while you are checking AirPort Utility.

  • Internet slow when using airport extreme

First off I don't understand the intricacies of networking at all.
THat said when I connect my macbook pro to the modem directly I get around 15meg download using a speedtest website.
Using the wireless I'm lucky to get 2meg. It's an airport extreme dome so it's more than capable of handling the speed.(right?) I assume the built in wireless card in the MBPro is equally capable.
So, is there anything I can do to improve things? I live in an apartment where there are many wirelses networks if that's relevant.

Well I seemed to have improved this dramatically by changing the security to WPA2. But that has created a problem with my powerbook as it cannot see the network.
I'm guessing that's a problem with the powerbook's airport card?? Can I update this?

  • Sharing internet to wired client using Airport Express

    hey
I'm trying to connect a client to my home network through ethernet to a airport express which is wirelessly connected to a Airport extreme base station (802.11n).
This is what i would like my setup to be.
ADSL to modem to Airport extreme wirelessly to Airport Express wired to client (will eventually be a xbox media center).
It says in the apple FAQs that this is possible by configuring the AX as a WDS remote or relay. Since i have no desire to extend the rage on the network, I've made it a WDS remote, but I tried to connect my macbook to it over ethernet to test, which didn't work. Is there any settings that need to be changed it the connection is going to be shared to a wired client?
    Thanks
    Mike

I have the xact same question as Mcgio. Earlier in this thread there was mention of WDS. From what I have gathered elsewhere, WDS is only necessary if you want to extend your wireless network? That is not what I want to do - I essentilly want to extend my wired network using the AX wirelessly.
I ask about WDS because it does not appear that my Netgear WNR834M router supports WDS (nothing about it in config or the manual).
Will what we are trying to work and what do we need to do?

  • Kernel Panics (AFPFS) when using airport discs AND user switching!

    Ok,
    I would love to see if anyone else has had this happen;
I can replicate this on 2 Mac Pro's we use:
We have airports discs (in accounts mode) connected, all works fine. However, IF one user does not log out, and another logs on (user switching) we will invariably get a Kernel Panic after some time (sometimes when putting to sleep or logging on, sometimes 'just'. This has not happened when airport discs are NOT MOUNTED, or befure using them (we are using the latest, just-updated software patch). Any suggestions?
The Panic log (with the memory dump removed) is below:

I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
    com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
    com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
    com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
    com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

  • Speed issue when using Airport Express

    Hello.
I have had an ongoing battle recently with Internet download speeds.
I connect my iMac to my Airport Express.
    iMac has Firewall ON.
When I connect this way, I get slow connection / download speeds.
The file I am using in this example is the MS Office 2003 SP3 update.
    I get around 200kbps.
    However....
When I connect my iMac directly via Ethernet to my Cable Modem, I am getting 1.5mbps download.
Can anyone shed any light on this and advise how I can correctly configure the Airport to get nearer this speed?
    Many thank in advance
    Glenn

Have you repaired Permissions since the last update/upgrade?
If not, either do that or get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start
While watching Activity Monitor>Networks, are there dips in the download speed, or just flat slow input?
How many bars do you get?
What speed does it say it's connecting at in Network Utility?
