Shared Photo Stream Taking Up Storage

In our family we do a shared photo stream every month. It's a great idea and I love being able to see the pictures, video, comments, etc. from all of my family members. It doesn't take up any room on iCloud which is very nice, however it does take up room on the users iPhone. I was wondering if there is a way to unsubscribe or delete the shared album without actually deleting it? I still want access to the shared albums (on the web or something), without having them be completely deleted for everyone else. If not, the albums themselves don't actually take up that much room on my iPhone, so it's okay.

Go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and make sure the options are turned off.  If they are on, turn them off.

Stay forever and don't count towards your iCloud storage use.

  • Why is my shared photo stream taking up space on my iPhone when I have turned off photo sharing?

I have an iPhone 5c with iOS 8.3. It's only an 8GB iPhone, so I only have about 5.2GB of space to use. So I have to be very picky about what stays and what goes on my iPhone. Photos is one of those things that don't stay on my phone long. I have deleted all of my pictures out of my albums (both camera roll and recently deleted) and there can be no photos found in my library. In settings, I turned off all photo sharing capabilities, so I shouldn't be getting shared photos from family members on my phone and stuff. So why does my storage say that shared photo stream is taking up 54.6MB? I would like it to say 0MB. Am I missing something? I've included a couple screenshots to help clarify things. Thanks for your help!

This is what I mean. I'm seeing the 3.9 KB usage for Photo Stream under General>UIsage>Photos and Camera, nothing to do with the storage on iCloud and I have Photo Stream and everything to do with iCloud and photo sharing off. However, I may have had Photo Stream on before for a few weeks before I turned it off long ago. Could that data/used space just be a few photos that were once in Photo Stream before I turned it off if I've had it on before?

  • Photo stream taking up storage but no photos in photo stream , so confused

I am using the IPhone 4 with ios6 version. When I go to settings and click on photo/camera it says 430mb on camera roll and  4.1kb used in photo stream. So when I go to the photo app to delete photos I click on photo stream tab it says I have no photo's in photo stream. What is going on and how can I delete those photos to create more storage?

Go to Settings > iCloud > Photos and make sure the options are turned off.  If they are on, turn them off.

I don't know what to do, and I delete the whole (empty) album, which I targeted to upload photo to it. but even after I delete the album, my available internal storage is still zero. it suppose to return my free space(return to 300mb of free space). can any one help me with this ??
i tried to delete apps to free up the space. i tried to delete a few apps and I manage to get back 200 my of free space but after a short while, the available free space go back to zero again...d my phone to be zero available internal storage.

  • Shared Photo Stream Phone Storage

    Hi,
If I or a family member share a photo or video to a shared photo stream, is that going to take away storage space on my phone?

I think the iCloud Photo Sharing Photos and Videos are only downloaded and kept on the device until it is near full. Then the shared photos and videos get marked for deletion until the shared photo stream is looked at again.
If the user wants to permanently keep the photos or videos on their device, they will have to save them to their camera roll.

  • I have a shared photo stream, are those shared photos taking up space on the i devices of the people I am sharing with?

I am getting conflicting answers about this question, which to me it seems like a simple no since these photos sit on another server. Now if the person I am sharing with decides to download some photos then yeah it's taking up space on their i device. But if they dont and are simply viewing my shared photo stream my though is that those photos do no eat up space on their i device.

How much space depends on the size of the photos and how many there are.
Settings > general > usage > photos & camera. The shared albums will be included along with other photos.

  • Shared photo stream storage

    Hello all,
Quick question. I see that in the description of photo sharing on apples site they say the following.
All your photos on your Mac or PC
Your computer automatically keeps all the photos that come through your Photo Stream.
I am wondering if someone can confirm that this applies to shared photo streams as well. I.e. will all the photos that others share with me be kept on my computer for good?
    Thank you for the help

no shared photo streams do not work the same as PhotoStream  --  see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4486?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • HT201077 Can I share all my photos with my wife without having to constantly add photos to the shared photo stream?

My family has an imac where we have a family photo library in iphoto.  The iphoto library is under my wife's profile.  My wife and I each have an iphone 4S.  I'd like all the photos my wife and I take on our iphones to automatically upload to the iphoto library on my wife's imac account.  I've tried a few different ways of doing this and none of them are ideal.
My current solution works, but has some unwanted side effects.  Currently, my wife and I use the same main icloud account on our iphones.  This would be the perfect solution if it didn't take up the same icloud storage (among other issues).
It'd be nice if you could have 2 photo streams linked to the same iphoto library on a mac.  This way both my wife's photo stream and my photo stream would downloand to the same iphoto library.  It doesn't appear that iphoto for mac allows this.
I realize I could do this the old fashioned way (outside of photo stream).  But, it seems as though there should be a solution that works automatically.
Could there be a solution creating a shared photo stream on my iphone and sharing this photo stream with my wife?  I've looked into this but can't see how it would work automatically.  It looks like you have to manually add photos to a shared photo stream.  I'd like the shared photo stream to update itself to include all photos I take.
Does anybody have a simple solution for this problem?

There is not (yet) an easy solution to use an an iPhoto library with two separate My Photo streams.
It might be easier to take the family photo library out of your wife's account and move it to a shared location, so boh of you can maintain it, see:
iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
This way, both of you could download automatically to My Photo Straem and your private iPhoto Libary, remove the worst pictures, and then export only the best shots to the shared library. This will make the shared library smaller and at the same time create a backup of the best pictures, and it will ensure that your family will never see a potentially embarrassing photo. Sharing My Photo Stream is really dangerous, because each and any picture you take will be added the PhotoStream, before you can delete it.
As you may have seen at Apple's WWDC keynote presentation the new MacOS X Maverick will bring more sharing options for Photo Streams: Watch the keynote
You may want to wait for the next software generation before doing any major reorgansition.

Is there a way to not have photo stream photos save to my iphone?  i have many shared photo streams hoping to not bog down my iphone space.  but alas the photos are are being saved on my iphone.
For example.  When I share a photo stream with my dad and brother and mother all the photos they are putting in the shared photo stream are taking up space on my iphone!  I'll be out of space in no time at this rate.

  • I am unable to transfer photos from my camera roll to a shared photo stream.

I have be able to get 297 pics over to a shared photo stream, but it is very temperamental. Ever since I started trying to transfer over photos, my iphone 5 has been ating up. Apps close on there own. I have reset and restarted my phone many many times. I am running out of storage on my phone and I am under the impression that I can keep photos in a shared photostream forever and then delete them on my phone to make more room. Is this true? I have backed up all my photos to my pc, but I like to have them on my phone too. Anyone know how to fix the problem with tranferring photos from camera roll to shared photo stream? Thanks!

    Amybeth
Photostream photos are kept in Photostream for 30 days.. it's not really a long term storgae media.  It's a temporary storage on your way to a computer storage solution.

  • Shared Photo Streams without keeping files in my computer

    Hello,
I've been taking pictures for about 8 years, and I'm now looking for ways to store them online. I'm talking about over 150GB of pictures, which would be impossible to fit on the internal 128GB SSD. Therefore, is there any way I could create shared photo streams without having to actually store the files on my computer permanently?
    Thank you!

Shared Photo Streams need to be  tied to one iPhoto Library. You could use an external drive to store your iPhoto Library and connect this drive only, when you want to add to your Photo Streams. You could share the PhotoStreams to yourself, then publish them to a Website, where only you know the URL. You can view the website, even with the drive with the library disconnected.

  • Shared Photo Streams pushed to device over cellular data

    Hi,
I created today three shared photo streams in iPhoto and all of a sudden my iPhone started getting very hot and battery being drained quickly (it's an oldish 3GS, and the battery level was decreasing even though the iPhone was connected to the charger...).
In a nutshell: it seems that whilst data from the "ordinary" Photo Stream are uploaded/downloaded only when the device is connected to a wi-fi netwrok, if you have shared Photo Streams enabled on a iOS 6 device, picture data in these photo streams are "pushed" to the device also over cellular data, regardless of any other setting.
Apart draining the battery very fast, this may lead to using inadvertently a lot of data traffic in your data plan.
Did anyone notice a similar behavior and find out how to prevent it, apart disabling Shared Photo Streams alltogether, of course, i.e. did anyone find a a way to ensure shared photo streams are pushed to the device only under wi-fi?
    cheers
    -gianpiero

I suppose you could disable Shared Photo Steam while you are at cellular network and enable it again when you are at a wi-fi environment.   In Settings>iCloud>Photo Stream> turn Shared Photo Stream to Off.
The pop up warning tells you that this will delete all shared photos from your device.  What it doesn't say is, since shared photo stream remains stored in iCloud, all you shared and shared with you photo streams will be push back to your device once you enable Shared Photo Steam in wi-fi.  The downside of course is if you have a lot of photos in your shared photo steams, it will take some time to download them.  But at least you know for sure your cellular data is not affected.
Btw, Shared Photo Steams doesn't count towards iCloud storage, just like Photo Steams.  Maybe That's why turning off iCloud document doesn't affect shared photo steams.
