Shared printer doesn't

TC is alleged to share a printer. It doesn't. Any idea what I am doing wrong? I moved the USB plug from my hub to the TC USB port.

You need to install the printer again while it is connected to the Time Capsule.
Click System Preferences, Print & Fax, click the + (plus) button to display a list of compatible printers that can be added.

  • Shared printer doesn't appear on other Macs

I've had a Brother HL 4050 color laser printer for several months. It's worked great on my home network. I connected its Ethernet to my Time Capsule, and my wireless machines could print to it with no problems.
The only quirk has been that the printer would not appear automatically in the Add Printers dialog. I had to enter its Bonjour address (e.g. "Warhol.local" in the IPP dialog.
Now I want to reconfigure my network a bit. I have a G5 running Leopard that I'm using as a home media server. I want to connect the Brother printer to the G5 using USB, then share the printer via the G5 to the rest of my network.
I got the Brother printer working fine with the G5. I verified that the combo can print. I turned on Printer Sharing on the G5.
The problem is (as before) I can't see the shared printer on the other Macs. Unlike before, entering a Bonjour address (e.g. "Pema.local", the name of the G5) doesn't work.
I know the other Macs can see the printer over the network. Using Bonjour Browser, I see the printer "Warhol @ Pema" in the Internet Printer Protocol list. mDNSResponder shows an entry for "Warhol\032@\032Pema.ipp.tcp.local". But the Printer Browser simply won't show it. And I can't figure out the combination of Bonjour address and queue name to connect to the printer via IPP.
I checked the Console as a run the Printer browser, and I see an interesting entry:
    2009.05.04 14:14:25 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.mDNSResponder[555]) Exited abnormally: Segmentation fault
    2009.05.04 14:14:25 com.apple.launchd[1] (0x10b970.sandbox-compiler[652]) Bug: launchdcorelogic.c:6703 (23714):0: mspolicynew(targetj, target_service, flags & BOOTSTRAPALLOWLOOKUP, flags & BOOTSTRAPPER_PIDSERVICE, false)
It seems that the Bonjour daemon is crashing when accessed by the Add Printer browser.
Does anyone know why the printer (either directly connected or shared via Leopard) won't appear in the Bonjour network browse?
And does anyone know how to set up the IPP dialog to print to a shared printer?

With the help of Greg's post above, I did figure out how to use IPP with the shared printer.
I did have some difficulty figuring out the queue name. On the G5 with the printer, it said the queue name as "BrotherHL_4070CDWseries", so that's what I tried first in the IPP printer dialog on my MacBook. But when I tried to print, the Print Queue window for the printer briefly flashed "Destination printer does not exist!".
I remembered the CUPS web interface, so I looked at that for my machine (http://localhost:631/) and the G5 print server (http://Pema.local:631/). When I viewed the printer list on the server, the URL was "http://pema.local:631/printers/BrotherHL_4070CDWseries".
So I went back to the IPP dialog, used "printers/BrotherHL_4070CDWseries" as the queue name, and it worked.
Now I can print, but I still don't see the print server in the Bonjour browser. Problem solved, but mystery remains...

  • Sharing Printer doesn't seem to work anymore

We recently moved and had to set up our computers and printer sharing again. We have an aluminum imac hooked directly into our HP photosmart c4200 series. We want to print from our new macbook via printer sharing. However, we get a variety of error messages from the macbook saying that the printer is forbidden or that the printer is currently off-line. We have gone into settings and made sure that printer sharing was turned on both macs, reset/repaired permissions on both macs but still nothing. The only thing that is different is that when we successful printed from the laptop in the past it was a powerbook, now I have a new macbook and I am having the issues. Anythoughts? Oh and we are on a airport base station for our wireless router.

After searching a bit longer, I found a solution that worked for me. A setting in the CUPS server needed correcting. See this page for instructions: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/printing/topic2807.html#d21jul2008
After removing the Deny line indicated in the link above, I removed the printer from the remote computer and then added it back it. Two things happened, first when adding the printer back in, I no longer got the generic postscript printer driver as the default, but got the correct Officejet Driver. Second, It worked! Now to try it with my old 10.4.x powerbook to see if it's solved there too.
    Hope that helps!

  • When I print a Word document to a shared printer, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.

When I print a Word for Mac document to a shared printer (that is connected to my iMac) from my Macbook Pro, print preview looks fine but the printed page has too much blank space at the top and doesn't print the bottom few lines.  I have tried to adjust the margins and the page setup settings but to no avail.  It used to print fine until recently.  Is there a way to fix it so that the printer prints what print preview shows?

I should add that when I e-mail this document to myself and print it directky from the iMac, it prints fine.

  • My hp photosmart c310 doesn't list my computer so I can scan documents. It is a shared printer

I have a wireless connection to my hp photosmart c310c series printer.  I want to scan a document to my laptop, but it doesn't list my computer as one to send it to.  It is a shared printer and the other computer does show.  I have reinstalled the printer over and over again to no avail.  What can I do to scan to my computer?

    Hi nitab56,
Does starting the scan from the HP software on the laptop work?

  • Mac Book doesn't print when connected to a shared printer.

I am hosting a shared printer in our office and no other computer but mine can print from it. Mine is the only one connected to it via USB. All of the computers are Mac laptops. I've enabled printer sharing and checked to see how the others were configured but can't figure out what's wrong.
When printing from the other computers, I get a message in the progress bar saying "(On Hold) Authentication Required." I've tried pressing Resume and re-entering the username/password, but it goes back to that message...
The printer is a Brother 2140.

  • 10.9 laptop doesn't print to shared printer

I had a 10.7 MacBook Air which printed just fine to a Lexmark 500n color printer shared from an olg G4 powerbook laptop. I upgraded it to a 10.9 MacBook Air, and added the printer as usual. When I print, it goes through the process and the file eventually disappears from the queue, but it never actually prints, and before it disappears from the list, I see "printing - the process gziptoany stopped unexpectedly with status 1". How do I debug this?

The printer is a Evolis Pebble 4.  It was originally connected to an otherwise unused Mac Mini running 10.4 via USB.  This happened when trying to print from a relatively old (2008) and a newer (late 2013) iMac, both running 10.9.  Until recently, most of our iMacs were running 10.6, and were able to print to the 10.4 Mini without issues.  The newer iMac had never been able to print to this printer, but solving that trouble was not a priority until we switched everyone's iMac.
Our 10.9 iMacs were able to "discover" the shared printer from the 10.4 Mini in the normal ways.  So, I don't think it was a bonjour/mdns issue.
I found OS X Mavericks: Solve printing problems which states that a shared printer needs to be on 10.5 or later, so I dug up another Mini which had 10.5 on it and tried that.  The results were the same.
That's when I noticed that Evolis had two drivers: one for 10.5-10.6, and another for 10.6-10.9.
After upgrading the Mini to 10.6, and installing the newer driver, I was able to print from 10.9 to the printer shared by the MIni.  So, problem solved.
As an aside, when the Mini was running the older Evolis driver, the iMac did not automatically choose its driver for the printer.  When the Mini was running the newer driver, the iMac automatically selected the correct driver.  This might be because of something left over from the previous attempt to set up the printer on the iMac; or, it might be a "feature" of the shared printer's broadcast/response.
    Thanks for your response!

  • Borderless printing from Windows 7 64 to a shared printer on XP Pro system.

I recently bought a new dv7 HP laptop with Windows 7 64 bit to replace a Dell laptop running XP.  The XP laptop and other XP systems can print to my HP PSC2410 connected to a XP pro system fine.  The XP systems can print both 8x10, 5x6 or 4x6 borderlessly fine.  However, the new HP laptop with Windows 7 does NOT even have the option of 4x6 or 5x7size paper!  If I connect the printer directly to the win7 system, that works, but when I print to the same printer via the XP pro "shared printer", most of the paper size options go away.
I found a post that shows how to present a 4x6 paper size option to the win7 system which now works, but borderless printing to the 4x6 paper doesn't work.  The 4x6 photos all print with thin white borders.  Please tell me I don't have to replace my PSC2410 printer in order to print from my new windows 7 system (borderlessly) via a network!

  • Printing from JBOSS (on a windows server as system account) on a mapped (shared) printer (installed as administrator)

    Hi,
I have JBOSS running on a Windows Server. Our applications on JBOSS use network printers which are installed on the server for printing purposes. This works fine so far, except for one case for which I ask you for support:
If I map a printer, which is (only) conneted via USB with a PC and shared in the network, the printer is available on the server with JBOSS and can be mapped, BUT JBOSS is not able to see this particular printer and print on it, while the other installed
network printers are available and functional via JBOSS.
My researchs have led to the conclusion, that JBOSS doesn't see this printer, as JBOSS is running unter the SYSTEM account, while the printer was installed with an administrator account. Strangely network printers don't cause this issue.
If I start JBOSS with an administrator account, it can see and use the shared printer. But unfortunately this is not an option, as it causes other issues with our applications.
So the question is: Is there a way to make the printer visible for the SYSTEM account? Or any other suggestions?
Many thanks in advance and best regards,
    Amir

simple solution is to install your printers locally rather than connecting to a network resource, locally installed printers have the advantage of being
visible to every user on your system including system accounts. To install a printer locally rather than connecting to a network printer start the "Add Printer Wizard" and select "Local printer attached to this computer"

  • Error message when trying to set up shared printer

I can't seem to add my ancient agfa imagesetter to my list of printers. The rip software is running on an old mac running system 9. I've tried typing in the printer's IP address, but that doesn't work either.
So I thought I could work around that by sharing the printer from my G5 which is running system 10.4. So Mountain Lion now sees my agfa in the shared printer list, but when I go to add it, the error message is "Unable to download the software from the server at this time."
My best guess would be an issue with sharing permissions, but I am open for suggestions. I can't add any of the printers from the shared printer list, so it is not my agfa that is the problem with my workaround solution, it is a "sharing" problem with my G5.
Ideally, I'd like to print directly to my old rip, but if I can't, if anyone can help me solve the "sharing" puzzle, I would greatly appreciate it!!

If you are using LELA delete it from your computer.  It is not needed.  Connect viw your wired computer to 192.168.1.1 username blank password admin (or whatever you made it) and configure your router manually.

  • Parental control problem printing to a shared printer

    Hello chaps,
    Here's an annoying one.
Two Macs, both running OS X 10.6.3. They are both on a wireless LAN, once has a Canon Pixma 4200 printer directly connected via USB with Printer Sharing turned on - Everyone allowed to print.
The problem: When my wife prints to the shared printer from her machine it works fine. When my kids try to print from their Parental Control-controlled account it doesn't.
The job comes up in the print queue but with On hold (authentication required) next to it.
The account has the box ticked to allow administration of Printers.
I can find no place to Authenticate, to get the job to print, even via the CUPS Web interface (that I'm not an expert in).
    All clues gratefully received.
    Anyone have anu clues

  • MacBook won't print from shared printer on Windows computer

I've been trying all day to get my MacBook to print through my wireless workgroup network. I've found detailed instructions here http://macs.about.com/od/macwindows/ss/sharewinprttig.htm. I have a Canon Pixma MX330 Printer hooked up to my Windows XP Computer. The PC is hooked up to a cable modem and wireless router which I have been successfully able to use for internet for the past 3 years. I have a white MacBook with OS X 10.4.11.
I have completed all the instructions at the website stated above without any problems. The problem is that when I try printing something, nothing actually prints. My MacBook acknowledges that there is a printing in progress, the job is sent to my PC which signals that there is active data transport throughout the workgroup, AND my printer lights up. BUT the Printer utility on my Mac says the job is completed before anything actually prints. My printer doesn't signal any errors and neither does the PC. It seems as though the job has been completely lost in cyberspace.
Its been a hassle to print something from my computer for the past 3 years (my old printer wasn't compatible with Macintosh and I just got a new one), having to email it to myself then open it up from the PC to print and today I've decided to put all my effort into solving this problem.
I'd greatly appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hello Sarah897 and welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you have a Windows computer sharing its USB connection, you cannot use the drivers supplied by some vendors, and Canon is one of those. This is due to the Canon driver software for Mac OS X only being written to work with a direct USB connection. It will not work when shared by a Windows computer. (This is step 13 on page 4/5 of the link you posted. Also, this step is not entirely correct - or up to date - GimpPrint is long be renamed to Gutenprint)
So you will need to look at using a CUPS-based driver, such as those offered by Gutenprint. And in most cases the Gutenprint driver will work fine, providing your printer model is supported. And that could also be your issue here if you using a Gutenprint driver already. Looking through the list of supported printers with the latest version of Gutenprint, the MX330 is not listed. So you would have to look at using a different model of Canon driver within the Gutenprint list to see if you can get the printing to work - but this could take a lot of time and use a lot of paper and ink.
I would actually you look at purchasing an Airport Express. With this connected to your wireless network, you could connect the MX330 to the Express's USB port and then use the Canon provided OS X driver - no need to find a compatible driver while the good folks at Gutenprint get around to supporting this new model. The other benefit of having the Express is that you don't need the XP computer to be turned on in order to print from the Mac.

  • Shared printer not working (most of the time)

I have a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard using a shared Epson R380 printer connected to a G5 (running Leopard) . Most of the time it doesn't work, but occasionally it will. On the Mac Pro, the Epson monitor says "print job accepted" but doesn't change. On the G5, the Epson monitor shows the print job, but says "job stopped". When trying to resume the job, a warning box pops up on the G5 saying "Operation C0uld Not Be Completed - client-error-not-possible".
The shared printer works fine (most of the time, too) with another networked Mac, a Mac mini G4 running Leopard.
All OS's are the latest possible.

Sharing between Leopard and Snowleopard does not work reliably. For this reason, we do not recommend mixing Operating Systems.
    Hope this helps,
    Syd

  • Shared printer not showing in list

My husband and I both have mac g4's, connected over usb network. We both recently updated to 10.48. The printer is connected to usb hub on with his printer. Everything was fine til we updated operating systems. Now the printer stopped showing in my printer listing. It prints when connected directly to either computer. Did everything manual and books said about printer sharing. Both downloaded latest drivers. It's an HP Photosmart 3200.
    Thanks!

    g4 mirror   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Kathy,
Generally the updates affect the permissions on files, so that is why the Repair Disk Permissions can resolve printing problems.
    Given that you are using TCP/IP to connect to each other, then you would be using the same protocol to view and connect to the shared printer. What you can do next is open the CUPS printer page of your computer to see if the shared printer is visible. Do the following;
    1. Open your Internet browser, such as Safari.
    2. For the address, type
    http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
    and hit Enter.
    This should show the printers installed on your computer and the printers shared on his Mac (Tamo). If it doesn't show his shared printer, type the following;
    http://ipaddress:631/printers/sharename
    Note that you need to replace ip_address with the IP address of your husbands Mac (Tamo) and 'shared_printer' with the shared name of the printer. So the address should look something like this;
    http://192.168.44.47:631/printers/HP3200
If you are not sure of the shared name you can check this by clicking on Network Preferences > Print & Fax > Sharing.
Doing the above in the browser should make the CUPS page for the shared HP appear. If it does then we are a step closer in working this out.
Let me know how you go...
    Regards,
    Paul
