Shared Printers Slow to Appear in Printer Broswer

We have an all Mac Network hosted by a Dual 2GHz G5 running 10.4.9 Server. I have setup 7 shared printers on the server for easy access and printing from any of our workstations.
It seems like sometimes when adding new printers to a new workstation config, the printer browser takes longer that I would expect to populate the window with the shared printer queues. Also even if I have a Selected Printer in Print Dialog set to a specific shared printer, sometimes the first time I attempt to print, I may not get that printer first. Furthermore, the first time I print, the print dialog box takes an abnormally amount of time to appear, much slower than if I installed the print driver locally and configured a printer to point to the IP address of the printer.
Any suggestions that could possibly speed this up?

Hello,
I don't really have ideas, but maybe you should have a look to the "browse" directive.
Maybe all your mac try to send and get printers entries, so it makes everything slow...
Try "Browsing Off" in the /etc/cupsd.conf of your clients (and client.conf should contain ServerName yourserver.local) then restart print service.
Just a clue... hope it could help.

  • Managed Printers Don't Appear in Printer & Fax Preference Pane

Something curious to ponder. I've had this issue for a while now (though it's not a huge problem), where I have a managed Mac (managed via Mac OS X Server 10.6.8) that doesn't display the printers that have been added to a computer list via Workgroup Manager in the Mac's Printer & Fax preference pane. The printers do appear in CUPS (127.0.0.1:631), and the computer prints fine to the available printers, but they just don't appear in the preference pane. I've attached some screen shots for clarification.
    Computer list in Workgroup Manager
(even with the Only show managed printers option unchecked, nothing shows up in Printer & Fax)
    CUPS page on managed Mac
(All printers show up fine here)
    Print & Fax Preference Pane
(Printers don't show up here, why not?)
    Print dialog box in Safari
    (Printers show up here)
    Any ideas?

psc 2175xi printing problems.  Appears to print a line followed by a long pause before printing the next line or two.  I tried turning off the power to reset the printer, tried troubleshooting with online services and also tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  Not sure what to try next.  Any ideas?

This is caused by the failure of one of your cartridges.  I do not recall if the the PSC 2175 supports reserve mode printing with one cartridge removed, but try the following: Remove the black cartridge and print a test page.  Does the printer print at normal speed?  Is so the black cartridge was the issue and should be replaced.  If not then put the black cartridge back in and remove the color cartridge and print test page.  If the printer now prints normal speed the color cartridge was at fault and needs to be replaced.

  • Network shared printers stop working; default printer changes

    Hello,
Have an odd printing issue that seems to be ongoing and am trying to come up with a good solution or fix for it.
We have an environment that has a Windows 2012R2 Print Server, that is sharing various printers which are also set to List in Directory.  Some of the printers are HP and are using the HP Universal driver which shows as "True" for Packaged in
the print management window, and some of the printers are Canon which are using device specific drivers and show as "False" for Packaged.  My understanding is that the packaged attribute simply indicates that Point and Print can then download
the driver and install/use it without any security prompts whereas if it is not Packaged, then the driver must be installed on the local server/workstation by an Administrator.  We have Group Policy defined such that all Point and Print restrictions are
    Disabled.
We then have multiple Remote Desktop Session Hosts based on Server 2008R2 (x64).  Users connect to these hosts via thin clients (Wyse) and there is a domain login script using KiXtart that creates printer connections to the shared printers using an address
of \\printserver\printername.  We also set the default printer via the login script each time depending on user's group membership.
Each part of this setup is on it's own routed VLAN subnet, so the Print Server is on 192.168.0.x/24, RDSHs are on 192.168.1.x/24 and the printers themselves are on 192.168.2.x/24.  There is no firewall or other restrictions between the subnets, all traffic
    is allowed to flow.
The issue we are having is two parts, the first is the larger issue, but both are a pain:
    1) Randomly (no discernible pattern/reason/timeframe), some Canon printers will stop appearing in Print dialog boxes from applications when a user tries to print.  It only seems to happen on the Canon printers.  The printer will still show in Control
Panel -> Devices and Printers, but when you right click it and try to go to Printer Properties or view any of the printer settings, you'll get an error saying the printer is not accessible/valid.  I have also tried a WMI query for "select * from
win32_printer" and the printer will not be returned.  To temporarily fix it, we right click the printer, and choose to remove it and then go through the wizard to re-add the same printer from the directory again.  That will correct it and the
user can print again, view all properties, etc.  This doesn't happen to every user but happens sporadically and once it happens to a user it seems to pop up once every week or two.
Now, we have made a change and installed the Canon printers in question locally on the Remote Desktop Session Hosts themselves using TCP/IP ports so that each user logging into the session host will see all of the printers.  This also seems to have resolved
this issue.  So it leads me to think there is some sort of timeout or connection getting dropped, but for no real apparent reason.  This is all on a virtualized platform and so the Print Server and Session Hosts have very reliable LAN connections
amongst themselves.  And further, we never see the issue with the HP printers, they seem to maintain their stability at all times.
    2) The other issue we are seeing is that from time to time the default printer setting changes or vanishes altogether.  It doesn't happen to every user but once it does happen it happens regularly (multiple times a day).  This happens even when using
the locally mapped TCP/IP printer or when using the network print server.  From what I have read and found, this generally seems to be a known issue regarding redirected client printers and some GP settings related thereto.  But we aren't redirecting
any local client printers, everything is network based/shared.
In digging into these two issues I have run across the following error we get regularly in the PrintService Event Viewer log:
The print spooler failed to import the printer driver that was downloaded from \\printserver\print$\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_amd64_59246c3ac1bd3f2a.cab into the driver store for driver Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver. Error code= 800f024b.
This can occur if there is a problem with the driver or the digital signature of the driver.
And digging further into that seems to be that their was an error validating one of the DLL files as seen at the following thread:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/9fe186e4-52f7-4552-a223-b2320cfc9ed5/driver-install-semi-fails-with-800f024b?forum=winserverprint
We get the exact same error that is shown there UNISRV.DLL being flagged as invalid, and have applied the hotfix indicated in KB2701894.
I am not sure the above error is realted to the issues at hand, but figured it is a good starting point to eliminate it as a potential cause of the issue.
Any input or suggestions on what to do to diagnose or further resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Alan, I'm getting this error 600 in my company. Is there any fix for this problem?
After installing KB2919355 on Windows 2012 R2, when I try to map a shared printer I receive the following error message: A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator.
If I uninstall the patch the shared printer maps correctly.
I also notice that if I copy the driver \\server\print$\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_amd64_a7ac65d1b7714fb1.cab
from a Windows 2012 R2 before applying KB2919355 to the server that has the patch applyed (and rename it), I can map the printer.
Does anyone know if there is a fix for that?

  • Epson shared printers- can't control print quality

    Hi someone,
We have an espon stylus photo 1280, and an epson stylus photo R200.
Both are connected to one Intel iMac via USB.
We have 2 other Macs - one iMac G5, and Mac mini G5 which are sharing these printers. All have the latest Tiger OS 10.4.6.
They print fine, but the problem we're having is that the 2 computers which are using the printers via the network do not have access to Epson's special utilities when in the print dialogue screen - ie: they cannot change the print quality, paper stock, black vs colour etc. when just about to print.
The only one that does have access to Epson's controls is the one which is connected via USB.
We also can not see the printers from the other 2 macs in the Printer Browser when searching for them using appletalk, or epson appletalk etc....only in the Default Browser as "Shared Printers"
Does this have something to do with it?
How can we get the 2 Macs which are using the printers as "shared printers" access to the epson print options?
    thanks!
Intel iMac, iMac g5, Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Are your printers "networked" as in using ethernet, or are they simply shared, using the OSX shared printers feature? I think it makes a difference.
I had a similar problem. My printer, an Epson 1280 is connected to mu iMac G4 via USB, and is shared by my MacBook Pro. I was unable to access the Epson print utility features that allow setting quality, borderless prints, etc. I contacted Epson and they sent me the following fix. it took care of the problem. I can change the settings from either the primary iMac or from the shared printer on the Laptop.
To correct the issue you are experiencing, we will perform a complete
removal of the files and reinstall the driver.
    REMOVE FILES
    1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE
    2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder
    3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder
    4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can
NOTE If you receive an access denied error message, this indicates that
you do not have root access. You will need to contact Apple for assistance
    on obtaining Root Access.
    1. Insert your 10.4 CD/DVD, double click on the CD/DVD icon on your
    desktop.
    2. Double click SYSTEM > INSTALLATION > PACKAGES > EPSON PRINTER
    DRIVERS.PKG
Follow the prompts for the installation, restart your Mac when complete
Please follow the steps below to install the resident driver for your
    printer in OS 10.4:
    1. Make sure that your printer is turned on and connected to your computer.
    2. Open your PRINTER SETUP UTILITY. This is found in HARD DRIVE,
    APPLICATIONS, UTILITIES directory
    3. If there are any entries for your printer click on them and hit the
DELETE. Once they are all gone Click ADD, then MORE PRINTERS at the bottom
    of the printer browser.
    4. In the window that appears, select EPSON USB from the drop-down menu at
the top, then highlight your printer when it appears under NAME , under
PAGE SETUP select ALL, and then hit ADD.
    5. Quit out of the printer setup utility and try printing from any OS X
    application.
To set up your printer for borderless printing in OS X please follow the
    steps below.
After you have installed your printer driver for OS 10, you will need to do
the following to add extra paper features such as borderless printing
    options:
    1. Go to Printer Setup Utility (found in HD > Applications > Utilities).
Delete any existing references to the Epson printer from the list.
    2. Go to Add. Select Epson USB for a USB printer or Epson Firewire for a
    Firewire-connected printer.
    3. Highlight the printer name when it appears under Product. Under "Page
setup" use the up-down arrows and select ALL.
    4. Click Add. The new printer options will now be added to the Printer
list; you will see the printer name numerous times with different paper
selections attached. (If you are unable to see the full description you
will need to extend the name category.)
    5. Highlight the printer name/feature which you wish to use (For example,
"Stylus Photo 2200 (Sheet feeder-Borderless)") and make it the default.
    Close Printer Setup Utility.
    6. Ensure Classic is not running. Open an OS X application and the file you
    wish to print.
Setting up borderless prints in an OS X application (NOTE: not all
    applications will show these options)
    1. Click on FILE and PAGE SETUP. Ensure the settings below are adjusted:
    SETTINGS: PAGE ATTRIBUTES
FORMAT FOR: EPSON STYLUS XXX XXX(BORDERLESS)
PAPER SIZE: Whichever compatible paper size you wish to use
(NOTE: borderless printing is not supported on custom paper sizes.)
    Click OK when done.
    2. Click on FILE and PRINT. Ensure the settings below are adjusted:
    PRINTER: Stylus XXX XXX(BORDERLESS)
    PRESETS: STANDARD
Make any other adjustments needed (on COPIES and PAGES, PRINT SETTINGS,
    etc) and then click PRINT.
    Good Luck!

  • Issue w/ shared printers and multiple copies

I just bought a Samsung ML-2010 today to replace my aging HP LaserJet 5L. The printer works fine (albeit rather noisily) except for one issue: I can't get it to print multiple copies of a document; if I specify multiple copies, I always get a single copy. I have downloaded the latest driver from Samsung's web site.
Has anyone experienced this? If so, have you found a solution?
Update: It appears to be a problem with shared printers. I have the printer connected to a wireless print server. When I share the printer through my desktop machine (so that I can queue long jobs on the desktop and put my PowerBook to sleep) , I have the issue. When I print directly to the print server from my PowerBook, multiple copies work just fine.

Never mind. I have no idea how I fixed it, but multiple copies are now working when the printer is shared by my desktop machine.

  • How to get back shared printers

I hope the answer is a simple one, but at the moment it is quite frustrating. Somewhere around OSX.2 I got fed up with the long list of shared printers showing up in my print center by people who didn't know how to set up their printers, so I disabled/turned off viewing of shared printers. Now however, after getting a new iMac G5 and migrating all my settings and user account, I am in a new environment and want/need to access shared printers. The problem is they are gone and I can't find a setting anywhere (print center has been replaced with the printer setup utility) that allows you to activate/turn on viewing of shared printers.
Does anyone know how I can do this in X.4?!? My print dialog should have Shared Printers listed in the Printer: drop down list and it doesn't!
    Please help. Thanks. Jason

It sounds like you edited the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf?
And then used migration assistant so it kept the
    configuration?
If so, I recommend you try going to that directory in
the Terminal, then rename your current cupsd.conf to
    cupsd.mybak, and rename cupsd.default to cupsd.conf.
Then restart CUPS to make it recognize the change
    (sudo killall -HUP cupsd).
Edit - you may need to restart the Mac - there are
other network pieces that need to restart in order to
    find shared printers.
    Is this what you needed?
Yep, this worked. Thanks for your help!

  • HT1150 I have two shared printers and I want to be able to select the printer when it is time to print without having to set a default EACH time.  Can I just have a prompt to ask me which printer to use???

I have two shared printers and I want to be able to select one printer when it is time to print without having to set a default EACH time.  Can I just have a prompt or dialog box that will ask me which printer would you like to use???  The only options I can find are "default" and "Last printer used" which means I must go into the Print & Fax area and change the default EACH time I want to print???  Seems very low tech.....

    junnybug wrote:

In most cases you get this dialog box every time you print. It is called the print dialog and normally when you print, a print dialog appear showing the printer that is to be used. Which printer you see will be based on what you have set in Print & Fax as you mention. But regardless of what you have set there, you still have the option to change the printer via the print dialog.
If you are using an application that does not show the print dialog, like MS Word and that stupid "print one copy" print icon in the toolbar, then you can often change the action the print icon uses so that the print dialog appears.

  • HP Laserjet 1022n and 1022nw shared printers fail to print

    Hello.
We have a number of these printers shared out on Windows Server 2003 servers to Windows XP clients.
We are using Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 on some print servers, and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 on others.
Some of them work, but some refuse to work. You'll get the first page to print, and then the print queue will for ever more claim to be printing, when it does not.Restarting the spooler service will reset things. I can't tell anything that is different between those that work and those that don't, although on one network it appears that no 1022 will work at all. I've tried three different Windows 2003 servers, and they all fail.
The printer drivers I'm using are the latest ones off the HP website, and I've firmware updated the printers too.
I'm using an HP Standard TCP/IP port.
I've found that they appear to print successfully if shared out on a Windows 2000 server, but this doesn't really help me.
Can anyone suggest anything please? We've been forced to spool a number of them off Windows 2000, but this must only be temporary.
    Many thanks,
    Paul.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi Rick.
I've spent some time on this investigating via google as well as experimenting with drivers, and it appears that if you spool this printer of a Windows 2003 server and you have the latest MS patches, then you can only print if you have administrator priveleges over the server. It doesn't matter at the workstation end. However, it does appear that some of our printers are unaffected, and I can't believe that the users who continue to print okay have admin priveleges on the server.
Anyhow, there is a simple fix to this - use the Laserjet III driver from the original XP distribution. This driver appears to print fine to the 1022.
However, it'd be nice if HP acknowledged the problem somewhere and ultimately created new drivers. I can't see any evidence of this on the internet.
Hope that this workaround works for you.

  • Bonjour printers don't appear in Add Printer

I have 4 Intel macs on my home network. They all run the newest version of Snow Leopard. I've kept up to date on all updates. I believe my current problem may have occurred after the latest OS X update or perhaps after the new Safari update. But I'm not absolutely certain it was related to applying any updates.
The problem is that on one of my 4 macs I cannot add any printers. If I try to add a printer through the System Preferences ("Printing and Faxing") none of my three printers shows up on the list. On all three of my other computers all three of my printers show up as "bonjour printer" options.
After doing my usual set of "fixes"-- zapping the PRAM, running FSCK -FY, restarting all of the involved devices, I finally took the step of completely re-installing Snow Leopard and adding all of the updates. This did not fix the problem.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
