Shared printing os9 and osx

I have a Mac G4 desktop with airport card connected by wireless to Airport Extreme base station, my G3 desktop is connected through a router attached to the single port of the base station. I have an Epson non-wireless printer connected to a USB hub and switch manually USB cables from the G4 and G3 (since I have not been able to get the G3 to share the printer)..
I can print wirelessly using my Macbook Pro.
I have a PC connected by USB to a Brother printer. The PC is connected wirelessly through the airport extreme base station. I loaded the Brother drivers by directly connecting the macbookPro to the Brother printer and it prints fine.
What I would like to be able to do is wirelessly print to the Brother from Macbook Pro and the G4. I configured printer sharing on the PC.
The PC and the Macs are on different floors of the house.

Hi, G4M -
At a minimum, the G4 (DA) model came with the following CDs -
    Software Restore
    Software Install
    Apple Hardware Test
Mine also came with separate CDs for -
    iMovie 2
    iDVD
Mine was purchased directly from Apple. If yours was purchased through a reseller, it may have been bundled with additional software as part of a reseller promotion. If so, there may have been additional disks that came with it.
Very late machines of that model series may also have come with separate install CDs for OSX 10.0.3.
Note - the OS 9 version that shipped with the G4 (DA) models was a model-specific version of OS 9.1, one which used Finder v. 9.1.1. This means that they can not use a retail OS 9.1 Install CD. They can, however, use a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.

I have my iMac G3 set up with three partitions like you are proposing.
I'd recommend getting virtual box on your new Mac.  You can install the latest Linux version easier this way.
The problem is finding a PPC distro you like.  I forget how I configured the Linux boot manager, yaboot.  I may have skipped it or had it installed in the linux partition.

The Ubuntu folks stopped supporting the power PC a while back.  You will have to install an older version of Ubuntu.

  • What's physically different in the way OS9 and OSX displays?

I used to have an iMac G4 (at work, in the USA) delivered with OS9 and OSX. Looking at the display under OSX made me tired and nervous, whereas using it under OS9 did not! No joke. (I find OSX a very good system and have no psychological bareer; it must be something physically different. What is it?)
Now I'm using a newer iMac delivered with OSX only and am suffering. I do not have that problem when looking at the LCD screen of another DELL PC at work or at a Thinkpad. However, with CRT-monitors I can easily distinguish if it runs at 72 Hz (=torture) or 85 Hz (O.K.).
If anyone could at least explain me the phenomenon with the iMac LCD, I'd be grateful...
    iMac G4

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may just need to calibrate your display's color
profile. Apple menu -> System Preferences ->
    Displays.
This helps a bit but does not seem to solve the basic problem. Too bad I can't run OS9 on the same machine and adjust the color profiles under both systems so it looks similar, and then compare how it feels to work with both systems...

  • External hard drive format for use in both OS9 and OSX

I have never use OS9. A friend of mine wants to transfer their files from an OS9 computer to an OSX computer. Is there a hard drive format that can be used on both OS9 and OSX. It would be great to be able to transfer the files over on my Firewire hard drive.
    Many thanks,
    Beaglebrain.

    Beaglebrain,
Should have added that you should check the size of your HD. OS9 won't recognise anything beyond about 190GB.

  • G4 with OS9 and OSX - HELP!!!

Hello, I have a G4 Powermac which has been running 10.4.11 for some time now.
Since this is a dual boot machine, it has been connected to an older drum scanner for several years (this scanner ONLY works in OS9). I haven't had to boot this machine in 9 for about a year, but I had to yesterday and now it will not BOOT UP AT ALL. I tried booting with the shift key to no avail. I booted up from the system disk, ran apple HW test which found no HW issues. at the moment, the machine has a blank blue screen. any ideas??!!

Hi! Try booting with the option key down and select the OS you want from the icon that come up in the bootloader. It's slow so be patient until it's ready for you to select the correct volume you want to startup from. Alternatively the "x" key down at startup forces an OSX boot if a valid OSX system is found. • Networking OS9 and OSX

I have an old PM6400 running OS9 (upgrade card to a G3-400) and a PM G4 Dual 1 gig running 10.4.8 connected via airport (ethernet port on G4 using a DSL modem), base station connected to the ethernet port on the PM6400, airport card in the G4. I can connect to the G3 from the G4 and share files but haven't been able to get connecte the other way around. I can "see" the G4, but get a message "connection broken" immediately upon trying to log in (I actually get that message every time, even if I put in the wrong password). I am thinking it's an airport setting issue on the G4, but can't track it down. Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Steven Roach

Seemed to work it out. Am still interested in suggestions on using the printer connected to the G4, haven't been able to find it from the G3, or use the internet connection through the G4. Is there a trick to this?

  • Epson Print CD and OSX 10.4.11

For the past week, I've been having a running battle with Epson about my Stylus Photo R320 which has suddenly become useless. Epson Print CD software crashes, and since my business is creating DVDs and CDs, this is a bit of a problem...
Epson insists that this is a problem with OS 10.4.11, and indeed, it is happening on both my computers running this version of the OS. The following excerpt from the crash report is the same on both computers: Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000007
Can anyone offer any help or advice? I'm losing business! Thanks so much!!
BTW, I'm running a Mac G4 AGP Graphics with 2 gigs of RAM and an OWC 1.4 gig PowerPC processor upgrade. The laptop is a 12inch G4 1gHz Albook with 768MB of RAM.

Have you had any luck with your printer.
I have a Epson R265 that has become useless aswell using the same OS?

  • To Partition or Not to Partition - OS9 and OSX 10.3.9

    Hi Guys
I just replaced my old G4 internal hard drive with a new Scorpio Black SATA 500 gig 7200 rpm SATA and a Firm Tech PCI card.
My old drive had 2 partitions, the large one for OSX 10.3.9 and the smaller one for OS 9.2, which I don't use anymore.
I tried to partition my new WD drive giving OS 9.2 only 20 gigs, and the rest to OSX 10.3.9. Well this new WD drive wouldn't let me give only 20 gigs to OS 9.2. It kept changing itself to 37 gigs. That's way to much space for just the few things I have stored on it.
So, with that in mind, I only made 1 whole partition formatted to OS Extended Journaled. If I need to run OS 9, will I still be able to even though the drive is not formatted to OS Extended? What problems would I have, if any?
Or do I need to partition these 2 operating systems? If so, is there a way to override that 37 gig minimum on the WD drive. By the way, that new WD drive will be my master drive.
As always, thanks for your help.
    Best,
    Anneit

    Hi Tom
    Thank you for your response.
You can have OS 9 on the same HD or partition as OS X without any problems.
    That's good. Thank you.
What model G4 do you have?
    Here is my G4 model:
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Model: Power Mac G4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
    Memory: 1.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.5f1
    Serial Number: XB136*KSK
    Sales Order Number: M8*LL/A
Now I'm have a huge problem. It looks like a have a kernel panic. When I start up I get a little question mark for a couple of seconds, then I get the smily face but then I get a kernel panic. Yick!
Here's what I had done before this happend:
    - While my old hard drive was still in my G4, I cloned it to my new drive, the Western Digital SATA with the PCI card attached to it, using super duper.
    - So then, I removed my old drive.
It is my understanding that the black end of the grey drive cable is for a master drive, and the 2 grey ends are for slave drives. Correct? So now the black end is not connected to the new drive. (It doesn't fit anyway.) I just assumed that the PCI card is taking care of this. However, I could be wrong.
I checked the top of the new drive and it said "Master/Slave Jumper Not Required for SATA". So how does it know that the new drive is a master. Could that be the problem?
Could the problem be that it doesn't see a master drive? Am I missing something?
By the way, I have 2 other Internal Western Digital drives also in my machine. They have been working just fine.
    Please help.
    Best,
    Anneita

  • Performance between LV6.1 + Mac OS9 and LV7 + Mac OSX

    Hi,
I use a PowerMac G4 bootable on OS9 and OSX (10.2.8). I run one application (G progamming + CIN) on the 2 OS (one in LV6.1 and one in LV7).
My application do Real Time analyse. My problem is performances are better on OS9 than on OSX !!!
I don't understand why? Anybody has a little idea of the origin of this mytery ??
    Thanks for all help.
PS : The same test on a PC on XP pro + LV6.1 and Linux RedHat + LV7.1 give the same performances on the 2 OS...

    Of course it's LV7.O + RedHat 9, sorry...
I haven't narrowed down the area in loss of performance :
    - profile VI --> approximativly the same result on OS9 than on OSX.
    - small VI test on part of code --> performances are egual or better with LV7 on OSX !!!
    - modification of the excution thread or/and priority --> not conclusive. (On RedHat, this modification is radical for the increased of the performance !!)
    - compiling the CIN with speed optimization --> not conclusive...
The last thing I think, it's that run OSX is more expensive in CPU time than OS9... Is it possible? how test it?
I hope this is not a problem like this, because I can't optimized it !!!

  • Leopard keeps losing my shared printer

I have a 500 MHz TiBook running 10.4.11 that I have been using a print server and file server. My printer is connected to the TiBook by USB, and shared through the Sharing Preference Panel.
My main work computer is a MacBook Pro. When I had 10.4 installed on my MBP, it remembered the existence of the shared printer. However, since upgrading to Leopard, my MBP keeps forgetting about the shared printer. I frequently have to "Add new printer". This process takes a long time, because it insists on searching for new drivers, etc.
Does anyone know if there is something I can change in my configuration to make Leopard remember that this shared printer exists, and that it is my default printer?
Upgrading the TiBook to Leopard is not an option, because it is a 500 MHz machine.

This was fixed by the OS 10.5.2 update.

  • Switched from OS9 to OSX... nothing.  Ooops.  Help?

I have a G4, with OS9 and OSX Panther. I switched from 9 (which works great) to X, rebooted, and now all I get is the grey slash-through-circle. Rebooting doesn't help. I got the computer used so I don't have either OS install disks.
I'm certain this is an easy fix, but apparently I'm kinda stupid. Thanks for your advice. -john

    G4   Mac OS X (10.1.x)

    hello john
first of all, as its a used unit, you probably may want to have the removable stuff such as the RAM checked out. OSX does require a lil' more ram than OS9.
another useful thing to do would be to clean it out after taking the back out, please dont remove anything without refering to the users manual. (this can also be easily downloaded from the web). check that nothing is damaged or burned out, if it is, you may get a return on your gurrantee.
if all else fails im afraid you may have to purchase a new unit. probably a resonable cheap mac mini.
i hope this helped your query.

  • Can long file names survive OSX to OS9 to OSX?

This computer has dual boot capability, but since owning it I haven't actually booted to OS9 and have used it extensively with Tiger. I know OSX supports much longer file names than OS9. I recall back when I used both OS9 and OSX computers if I took a file created under OSX and looked at the directory under OS9 that all the long file names were truncated and/or encoded at the end (I never did it the other way around and always stuck with short names on all the files I used on both systems). Now I'm wondering if I boot to OS9 and then boot back to OSX if something permanent will happen to my long file names. Will they survive a passive journey but not if I actually open them with something, such as all my music files if I have them in SoundJam? A simple answer probably, but maybe I can get an answer here rather than the "backup, try it, and see" method.

Will they survive a passive journey
    Yes.
if I actually open them with something, such as all my music files if I have them in SoundJam?
It depends on whether the application supports long file names; if not, the file's actual name will become set to the encoded name upon copying or modification of the file, and the application may not be able to access it. Using a Disk Copy version that doesn't support long file names to convert a disk image containing them without resizing the image will preserve them.

  • Trouble connecting OSX to a shared printer on Vista

I am running OSX 10.4 and can't seem to get it to print to Vista. This is the weird thing. Firstly, I can access shared folders on Vista from OSX, I can print to the printer hooked up to Vista from Vista on Parallels, I can print to the printer connected to my PC from XP through boot camp but I just can't print from OSX direct. So to make that clear I can run Vista on my Macbook Pro with Parallels and print to the network shared printer no trouble at all but not from say Pages or Keynote.
Has anyone got this problem or any suggestions? I have tried customer support and they suggested a few things I had already done like Bonjour, Option button - Windows printing through Samba, Network Neighbourhoood and a few others but with no success. Please help. I am thinking it may be a compatibility issue with Vista, OSX and Printing Service but being this new to Mac I can't be sure of that by a long shot. Thanks for your time guys.

  • How to create print sharing for Mac and PC computers

Hello~ I hope someone can answer these questions... Thanks!
We are a small design office. We have trouble printing recently after we upgrade our Mac OSX v10.4.
    We have:
2 PC computers (Window XP Home Edition)
    1 Power Mac G4
    1 Power Mac G5
    1 PowerBook G4
1 Epson Stylus Pro 4000 large format printer
    1 hp laserjet 3030 fax/copier/printer
We used to transfer the PC files to the server and print from Mac. We were able to print with 'shared printer' if one Mac computer is connected to the printer. After we upgraded 1 Power Mac G4 to OSX v10.4, we can no longer use the 'shared printer' for the other Mac computers. We cannot find the printer under 'shared printer' in the Adobe application, such as Illustrator and Photoshop.
We would like to set up the print sharing system that both Mac and PC computers can send files to the prints without putting files to the server or switching the printers. Can anyone help please? Many thanks!

There are a couple of disadvantages with formatting a
disk as FAT32. Firstly, there is a limit on the file
size for FAT32. I think it like 2 GB so if you
capturing video the results will probably not fit
into this file limit. Secondly FAT32 will not be
bootable. I alway clone my system to a backup disk as
bootable. That way if anything goes wrong with my
system, I can just boot from my backup disk and fix
    it.
The problem with doing this though is that the drive will not be usable with Windows (which was in the original posting) unless you use the third party MacDrive software on the PC.
