Shared section disappears from left column of finder

The shared section of the left hand column of finder disappears (I don't mean an individual drive, I mean the entire section). The shared items work fine under parallels using boot camp as a virtual disk. When the shared section happens to show up in finder, the drives work fine. They work fine from other windows PCs. Clearly this is a apple problem with no resolution.
I have tried the display bug (make the column wider in finder) and sometimes the shared section appears. I have spent endless hours on the phone with apple tech support. This bug cripples the functionality of the mac, since it cannot access the network drive that contains multimedia. I am very frustrated.
Any ideas?

I do regret my decision to switch to mac...there sales pitch "it just works" is BS. There are so many problems with their Unibody MBP, it is sad.
I have spent countless hours with apple tech support on this issue, and of course, they never accepted that there was a bug to begin with.
Then, the Airport Extreme update to 7.4.1 came out, I installed it, and guess what? The shared section always works not. More aggravating, using Software Update (from the apple in upper left corner) does not tell you there is an airport extreme update available; I found it by accident using the Airport Utility to try to resolve a different issue.

Shared mailboxes disappearing from Outlook 2010 profile

Ever since we upgraded to Exchange 2013 a few weeks back, one particular user keeps having to add her Shared Mailboxes to her Outlook 2010 profile every morning. She adds them and the next morning they'll be gone again.
She is the only user in a building of 50 who has this issue and it happens daily. I understand that it only takes a couple minutes to add them back, but it is starting to be more than an annoyance.
Sadly I haven't been able to find a solution.
Would someone here have an idea what could be going on?

Hi Jake,
From your description, only one user has an issue that shared mailbox disappears from her mailbox. I recommend her follow the steps below for troubleshooting:
1. Please use Exchange online mode to check if shared mailbox can appear.
2. Please create a new profile to verify if the issue persists.
If the issue persists, I recommend her install the latest Outlook 2010 Service Pack and check the result.

My notes section disappeared from my iPhone! I deleted an email account but it was a duplicate of one I already had set up. Help! My baby girls milestone events were put there as I prepared to put them in her baby book! My iCloud hasn't backed up in a while because I ran out of space...

Try going into Notes, then tap Accounts at the top left, and then tap All Notes. You can also try going into all of your email account settings and make sure Notes are switched on for all (green side showing).

IPhone 4 (verizon) not syncing. After back-up, it stops and disappears from left nav

Today I tried my iphone on an other window XP computer (a computer where no itunes was installed in de past). And I made another account for itunes on that computer after installing itunes. The connection was perfect and my iphone could syncing with itunes, no problemes at all. After that I tried my iphone on my own computer with the new account for itunes, but there was the same crash and restart as in the past (problems in sector one of the harddisk?). Now I'm sure for 100% that there is a computer problem and not an iphone problem, caused by interrupting the syncing procedure by myself through using the iphone. I hope the problem can be solved in the near future, cause I can imagine that I'm not the only one who tried to do this.

First, make sure they are all still enabled in the respective System Preferences.
If the are, then do you have any third-party menu extras? They will often interfere with the others if they are not compatible.

The 'Shared' tab disappeared from my sidebar

That's basically it - the 'shared' tab [which should be impossible to remove] disappeared from the sidebar. According to Finder preferences it should still be there.
Also the Network icon [globe] will not let me connect to any other computers/servers on my network [doesn't even show them anymore]. At first the old G4 could still connect to the iMac running Leopard, but even that stopped now.
Internet works OK, though.
How to get 'Shared' back ?

Assuming you don't have the button on the top left that says Inbox, a force quit out of Mail may work but I think you should reset your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

Shared section disappeared

So I installed Leopard, everything went smoothly and I was able to connect to other computers (win boxes) attached to my local network for 1 hour or so. Now the shared section on my finder's sidebar just disappeared. Now every time i want to connect to a Win machine on the network, I have to do cmd K and manually type the PC's IP as though I was using Tiger >_<
Is anyone having the same problem or it's just me? I swear I didn't change any network configurations on both the Mac and the PCs. Leopard is really getting on my nerves, I want 10.5.1 NOW!!!!

Im also couldn't get my girlfriends iMac (G5 running Tiger) to show up in my Finder sidebar. Came across this article in Mac OSX Hints:

It explains how to use the Screen Sharing on non Leopard machines. Turns out once the other computer is set up (the G5 iMac) it remains in my sidebar even if I'm not connected to it. When I click on it if I'm connected two buttons appear, one is to disconnect and the other is screen share. If I'm not connected to the iMac it still shows up in the sidebar but only a screen sharing button appears. You'd think I'd have to be connected (mounted on my desktop) in order to share screens, but it works fine. If the iMac is not connected to the network (airport off in the menubar) or if its asleep it doesn't show up at all. Once it wakes up and the airport is on it shows up in the sidebar.

Home sharing section gone from side bar

when I activate home sharing and sign in to my icloud account the home sharing tab from the sidebar disappears. I am still able to share to a certain extent but I am not able to completely browse all my libary from other devices like I could previously, this happend after performing a fresh install of ML 10.8.4 and problem persists after updating to 10.8.5.

Have you tried rebuilding your iTunes library.

Where are movies shared to Apple devices stored exactly? When I shut down FCPX the shared movie disappears from iTunes.

From my iTunes preferences the /Users/(myusername)/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Home Videos
I added that subfolder to distinguish home videos from purchased movies.

Stars disappeared from Rating column

While adding and editing some music using iTunes 10.6, I notice that the start rating system no longer functions for me.
I was using it as a way to categorize music: 3 stars for Opera, 4 stars for classical, etc.
I just discovered that in the List view, Ratings Column, no stars are visible.
If you highlight a song and do a Get Info, then go to the Info tab, I would swer that tab used to have a place to add star Ratings but it is now gone.
Highlight any song, go to Edit and mouse down to Rating, and it will correctly indicate the rating you have assigned to that song.
Likewise if you highlight any song and right click on it and mouse down to Rating, it will correctly indicate the rating you have assigned to that song.
But, NO Stars are visible in the Rating column!
I have restarted, checked all my preferences, etc.
Also, confusingly, on my wife's two-year old iMac running iTunes 10.8, the Stars work exactly as they are supposed to.
BTW, none of my computers is more than three years old, and all are running the latest version of OSX and the latest version of iTunes

I hvae the same problem. I have posted about the problems, but I have not received any responses yet. So now I am posting in similar already started discussions. I updated from iTunes 10.2.1 to 10.7. After the update, and the restart of my MacBook Pro the stars dissapeared. The column is still there, but the entire starts in the rating is gone. The only way to rate is to right click and choose the rating and you can see the rating. I have a high contrast on my iTunes but I tried to turn it off, but the stars in the rating column is still not showing.

Time capsule disappears from airport utility and finder while wifi still works

I am connected through my time capsule as wifi router.
Sometimes, while connected to the TC's wifi, the time capsule disapears from the finder and from the airport utility.
This leads to my time machine not backing up.

Thank you for your idea. However, after having imported the setup of the previous TC and having experienced problems, I had already done a factory reset and configured everything from scratch! Without using the profile. So I think we can safely exclude a problem connected with importing the older profile, which was in fact my first idea.
On the other side, I haven't tried your suggestion to give separate names to the 5 and 2,4 GHz wireless signals. I'll try this evening, as a last attempt before sending the TC back to Apple. BTW, I put my old TC back in place, and apart from the fact that the disk is noisy and almost full it works without a glitch. Which makes a software or configuration issue less likely, I believe.

Why has the new to rent or own section disappeared from the movies section on Apple TV uk ?

Is there anyway of escalating this to the powers that be to get them to include the new to rent or own section on Apple TV uk ? This section is still available on I tunes on my I phone 5 and MacBook. It's really annoying.

Firewire HD disappeared from finder

Hello-
I have a Seagate FW harddrive attached to my Mac Pro. It's icon recently disappeared from my desktop and finder. It still shows up in disk utility though. I have tried ejecting it and unplugging it and letting it sit. Still no luck. My finder preferences are set to show HD's (my main HD shows up fine). Those are the 2 common fixes I've read about here...anyone have any ideas?

Almost all vendor style FW cases come as FAT32, and I doubt they use Oxford 911+ FireWire bridge.
There are other reports of FW drives failing to show that once did. WD MyBook Pro a couple times.
Using a PCIe FireWire controller may help, but at least some required replacement from Apple.
It use to be pretty much required after the 10.3.0 problem with FW drives to never run an OS update with a FW drive connected, even like recent Security Update.
In any event, anytime you suspect hardware issue of any kind it is probably prudent to run Apple Hardware Test; check System Profile: Firewire (so ports and bus show up?) as first step.
SMC Reset would also be a good idea. With LaCie they often recommended unplugging power and every cable going into and from the Mac for 15 minutes to discharge or bleed any current.
Plugging equipment into UPS might not solve this issue, but can't hurt and may prevent problems.
Safe Mode: hold down shift key (mentioned a couple times in Apple.com/support
Single User Mode: command + s
Verbose Mode: command + v
Repairing a FW drive in SUM would be more challenge than it is worth. Usually only the boot drive gets repaired or mounted.
FW PCIe: Aaxeon is one of your best bets. Can run $109 for FW800.

PC's disappear from Airport Extreme Network

I have an Airport Extreme and three computers (MacPro and 2 PC's) Ethernet hard-wired to it for internet connection -- which works fine on all three computers. I set up a network between the three computers about a month ago and it worked perfectly for two weeks, then the two PC's disappeared from the Mac's Finder, and the "shared" marker also disappeared. About a week later, everything reappeared and again worked fine -- now it is gone again. I am confused because there is nothing wireless in play and when the computers appear in the "shared" list, everything works flawlessly, for as long as it lasts. I have been reading about a possible problem with Airports losing printers when attached through a hub, but that is not the case here either, the printers work fine. Does anyone have any thoughts? I really appreciate your time.

check the network setting... I mean all PC + Mac accessing the same network group... check on your airport utility - advanced - wins and select the workgroup named workgroup from the drop down menu, or whatever the name of the network is. also on systems preferences - sharing - file sharing should be on, and select options on file sharing and select afp, ftp and smb.
all these things always with firewalls off. keep firewalls off until you see the pc always and then start working on firewall settings
