Shared Section in Finder

Greetings: I have two computers sitting side by side (Macbook Pro and a PC Laptop). Sometimes the Laptop shows up in the Shared Section of the Finder and I can access files from it perfectly - and then sometimes (like now) it just mysteriously disappears.
All permissions are set as when it does pop up it works perfectly.
Any ideas on how to force the Finder to see the Laptop?
Thanks,
AK

Update - I just closed Internet Explorer on the PC and the Laptop popped up in the Finder!
Is it possible that outgoing traffic from the PC would affect the communication between the 2 computers??
Thx
AK

  • What is the "Shared" section in Finder? Can the PC listed there access my MacBook?

There is a "Shared" section in Finder with a PC listed in it.  Specifically, it's a notebook computer that shares my WiFi.  Why is that PC there? Can someone using that PC access my MacBook? Do I need to set up some password security? Or can I just get rid of that apparent connection?

The PC is listed because it has its file sharing turned on and is connected to your network.
File sharing on your Mac is controlled with System Preferences > Sharing.
To turn file sharing on/off, first unlock the pane by clicking on lock icon and entering your admin password.  Then you can check or un-check File Sharing.  When File Sharing is selected from the Service list you can add or remove folders to share and edit permissions to those folders.  Click on the (?) button for more info.
Always remember to relock the pane when you are finished.

  • TS5437 Should a computer list itself in the Shared section in finder?

I turned on File Sharing and Screen Sharing on both my iMac and MacBook to enable "Back to My Mac." However, my iMac will list itself in the shared section in Finder, but my MacBook doesn't list itself in its Finder.

So I use this from home, so I just have my computer running to my AirPort Extreme, then to my modem from the DSL company.
Does that mean I changed some setting in my Network system preference to cause this to appear?
Is there anything it is used for? Can I connect do it and do anything?
    Can I remove it somehow?
    Thanks again-

  • Mac Pro keeps duplicating itself in Shared section of Finder

My computer has recently started duplicating itself in the Shared section of Finder. It's listing up to five separate versions of itself in there. When I open Photoshop it's saying it used to be installed in a different location and needs to be repaired. I presume this is because the computer name is being updated in Sharing.
This has happened since switching from an Airport Extreme router to an Asus one and then back again.
I have tried resetting the Airport Extreme to default and setting it up as new. It's connected via ethernet and wifi to the computer, but the problem is happening even with wifi switched off.
I also trashed com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist and restarted. It seems to still be happening. I've also been getting intermittent messages about my IP address being already used and it changes it. It was up to about 21 before I reset.
I've read elsewhere that this was a bug, but everything is up-to-date, so I don't know.

My computer has recently started duplicating itself in the Shared section of Finder.
Unfortunately, this one of several nagging networking bugs in Yosemite for which Apple has not yet been able to offer a "fix".
The best that you can do in the meantime is open the Sharing folder and edit the name of the Mac to the correct setting. Restart the Mac after you do this.
It would also be a good idea to reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings and then set it up again if you can. There is no assurance that this will solve your issue, but it will not hurt to do this.
Some users have reported that reinstalling the Yosemite operating system has helped, but again this is a lot of work, with no guarantee that things will improve.
You may have better luck posting in the Yosemite forum, since the issue that you are reporting is really more of an operating system problem than an AirPort problem. The link is just below if you want to give that a try. Good luck.

  • What does this mean ek9f0e7936 in my shared section in Finder

I noticed this item under shared in Finder but I don't know what it is, when I clicked on it it said I was connected as a guest.
I tried to get the info on it but it just shows General PC and nothing more. I don't recall ever seeing this before. I shut down each of my other components that might connect wirelessly and checked each one as the source. Now when I click on the Item under shared it tries to connect but fails.

Mystery solved - after reading other posts of similar questions I found this -
it's a wreless printer which has a memory slot that I didn't even know about!
    Yup me too!

  • Vista Share Does Not Appear in Finder Shared Section

I consider myself a fairly technical guy, but I gotta say, I'm extremely frustrated trying to get a Vista64 machine to show up in the Shared section of Finder on my MacBook Pro (10.5.6). This has been a problem for me since Leopard came out, upgrade or new installation.
I can access the Vista shares via Finder > Go > Connect to Server, but I'm tired of this manual work-around. I'd like to see the PC available on the sidebar.
What's given me hope is that I can see other PC shares on other people's networks. This weekend I was on an Airport Express driven network and I could see a Vista32 and an XP machine in the sidebar. Having built and configured all 3 components of that setup, I know I did nothing special with the Vista NTVLM2 settings, or the Airport Express DNS server, or my own MacBook Pro's settings in order to see those PCs in the sidebar. We're all on the same workgroup setting, on their network and on mine at home, so no workgroup changes were made or required.
Does anyone have suggestions to remedy this? Why I could see the shares in the Finder sidebar on that network with standard configuration PCs and router, but not on my own network at home?
I see lots of related discussions that end with the OP saying "Thanks for your post, but it still doesn't work". Is this is known bug? What happened to the ease with which Tiger would display the PC shares?
    Thank you

I'm using an Airport Extreme, and I'm not aware of UPnP settings in the Airport Utility.
On the Mac, I set up a Parallels Vista instance in bridged mode and verified that I can see the other Vista PC share folders, so I know that the Vista PC has been set up correctly.
Additionally, as mentioned before, I switched DNS Servers several times, but settled on an alternative Rogers DNS to avoid their awful failed lookup ad page (64.71.255.202 if anyone needs it).
I also tried adding the Vista PC IP to my Mac hosts file, which oddly showed the Mac on the Vista side, but nothing on the Mac side.
I also goofed around in the smb.conf file with some settings, but alas, nada.
The only thing that might explain why the Airport Express network (Vista, XP) provided me with shares in the sidebar and not my own Airport Extreme network (just Vista) could be that it's a master browser issue. I saw a couple of posts about this.
If the Vista machine is the master browser, nothing will show in the sidebar, but if XP or a Mac is the master browser, then the sidebar will show shares. I don't have a way to verify this as I'm not sure how to force one machine to be a master browser over another. I'm suspicious if this will do anything as I've found other posts saying exactly the opposite scenario.
Is there anyone out there that has had a network, possibly with Airport Extreme, one Mac (Leopard), one Vista PC, and Vista share is showing in the Finder sidebar?

  • Unknown computers on shared file in finder

i have unauthorised computers showing in my shared section in finder!! how do i remove them and is this a security issue?

I am having the same problem. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago in iTunes. I have listings for other peoples computers in the shared bar. In iTunes, they are showing up as other users music.
When I click on the "phantom" computer it tries to connect and then disappears. Often in iTunes, the same will happen. Every once and again, it will connect and I could play the shared music.
I am wondering if it is possible to "mask" an IP address. It seems like these computers are on a Peer-to-Peer type network (I say this because in the iTunes example, some of the shares come up as *** LimeWire).
This seems like a leak in the Firewall, however, at this point I am uncertain as to how to correct.

  • I have a "hacker" PC showing up under the "Shared" section of the Finder

Today I noticed a PC computer icon showing up under the "Shared" section of the finder. The computer name was brn_921bc1. I immediately went into System Preferences and turned off file sharing. Is it really that easy for a PC hacker to come into my computer? Please help, as this seems to be a huge security threat.
    Thanks!!

I doubt this is a hacker but you do seem to have an insecure setup. If you have your computer connected directly to a cable modem then you are essentially on a shared subnet with lots of other people Most of them aren't hackers -- probably none of them are. But this situation does leave you vulnerable which is why many people prefer to place a router in between their cable modem and their computer even if they are only connecting a single mac or pc to the internet.
My first suggestion is that you turn on your Mac's firewall immediately. Open your System Preferences and type "firewall" in the search box. Hit return. When the firewall screen opens select "Allow only essential services". You should do this before you finish reading this thread.
My next suggestion is to buy what's called a NAT router and stick it in between your cable modem and your mac as soon as practical. This will give you a far more secure setup than you can get with a software firewall alone. If you need help setting it up, come back here and I'm sure you can find the advice you need.

  • Lion server shows up in Finder "Shared" section but won't connect

My Lion server iMac shows up both on my home LAN and from work in the Finder Shared section.
Other Shared servers show up (just Lion not Lion Server) and work fine, as usual.
When clicking on the Lion server icon the Finder tries to connect and then is unable (no password entered).  Connect As doesn't do anything.  Also, removed the original entry in Keychain so there's no password every requested nor given, just fails.
    Any ideas ?

Well, after much fumbling, I checked out ifelix' site again, and the trick was to select "shared" instead of "open" in Authentication Mode on the PC. I am not sure what the setup on my PC is now, but it works, and thats the main thing

  • Shared in the finder section, what does it mean

"shared" in the finder section, what does it mean?

    But what does that mean?
I just noticed there is something called "person" under Shared in my finder window for the first time. Feeling a little paranoid, because as far as I know, I'm not sharing anything with anyone (other than a Wi-Fi connection).

  • In my Finder window the Shared Section is missing

    Processor  2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  6 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Mac Lion OS X 10.7.5
In my Finder window the Shared Section is missing. Its even checked under Finder>Preferences>Sidebar. Do I need to edit something in my Library. If so, what file? in what folder? I rebooted, reset, etc to no avial.
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Shared section disappears from left column of finder

The shared section of the left hand column of finder disappears (I don't mean an individual drive, I mean the entire section). The shared items work fine under parallels using boot camp as a virtual disk. When the shared section happens to show up in finder, the drives work fine. They work fine from other windows PCs. Clearly this is a apple problem with no resolution.
I have tried the display bug (make the column wider in finder) and sometimes the shared section appears. I have spent endless hours on the phone with apple tech support. This bug cripples the functionality of the mac, since it cannot access the network drive that contains multimedia. I am very frustrated.
    Any ideas?
What happened to the sales pitch, "It just works"
    bob

I do regret my decision to switch to mac...there sales pitch "it just works" is BS. There are so many problems with their Unibody MBP, it is sad.
I have spent countless hours with apple tech support on this issue, and of course, they never accepted that there was a bug to begin with.
Then, the Airport Extreme update to 7.4.1 came out, I installed it, and guess what? The shared section always works not. More aggravating, using Software Update (from the apple in upper left corner) does not tell you there is an airport extreme update available; I found it by accident using the Airport Utility to try to resolve a different issue.
    Hope that helps.

  • See PC on Finder's "Shared" section???

    Okay,
I just put a new OS on my PC and I need a lot of files on it so I was wondering (on the PC side of it) how to set the PC up to be viewed on Finder's "Shared" section? I want to be able to drag the files I have over to the PC.
    Thank You,

One way would be to do this:
Create a new folder on your PC, then right-click and share the folder making sure you set permissions to read/write to it.
Then from the mac, assuming it doesn't automatically pick up the PC on the network, you would have to click on Go/Connect to server.... Try browsing first, if that doesn't work you'll have to use the IP address of your PC and directly connect to it using smb... You can google or look on these forums for the exact format I don't want to mis-quote it, but I think it's something similar to smb:\192.168.0.3 or whatever your IP would be...
