Shared Servers?

I just got my mac book recently. Having used windows xp until this point in time, I am quite unfamiliar with Mac OS, so my problem may sound odd...
When I open my Macintosh HD, under the SHARED category, I see multiple PC servers with odd names like trichem-nb02 that I do not remember adding (not that I know how to add them anyways). Does that mean I'm connected to multiple PC servers, or that other PC servers are connecting to my computer? Should I just leave them alone?
Thank you for the help.

So you are on a network that many different people access.
This is like the network neighborhood in windows. you are most likely seeing other computers on what I can only assume to be your dorm's or the wifi <edited by host>.
Either way I would make sure you don't publicly share any **** or other things you don't want others peeping at.
You could always try and see what is shared on their computers.

  • MTS - Shared servers die when stressed...

RedHat 6.2, Oracle 8.1.5, Running MTS
MTS is up and running, but when I start to stress the box, the background processes and the shared servers just die. This doesn't happen with dedicated servers, only with shared servers. When it happens, it happens fast...boom their dead! I am low on memory, but I have plenty of swap space. I heard there was a problem with MTS on Linux...anyone know the details?
    Thanks,

    Craig,
I am using MTS, RH 6.2, and 8.1.6.
After stress testing with my max number of connections for a prolonged period my servers
    die. Instance crash.
My test includes connections from a web and telephony server. I'm not totally convinced its a sole MTS issue. My only common denominator in testing is java, so I'm looking further here.
8.1.7 is due for release soon.
What type connections are you making (e.g any web servers ?)

  • New Finder can't display Shared servers

When I installed Leopard using upgrade option, Finder started displaying shared servers where devices and places are usually displayed. Since I live in a student accommodation I quite liked the idea of being able to browse through other people's shared music and photos, but after i did a clean install my finder refuses to display shared computers even though i ticked them in the preferences. Any ideas on how to fix it???

Try Trashing the sidebar preference file; com.apple.sidebarlists.plist.

    1. I read the above for dedicated server vs multi threaded server archcitechture ( shared servers), please make it easy for a novice like me to understand in brief. Is the difference between the two only that MTS spawn multiple virtual servers which share and same memor ?
    2. How does the dedicated server work right from a db user logs in to when the user logs out ?
    Thanks in advance.

    If so how?

What are the steps to ensure that the database is a dedicated server.Your database is always enabled to allow dedicated server processes,
but you must specifically configure and enable shared server by setting one or more initialization parameters.

    Hello,
Refer to the documentation is a great help. Please have a look at the below link:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96533/features.htmLook at the part :
Performance of certain database features can improve when a shared server architecture is used, and performance of certain database features can degrade slightly when a shared server architecture is used. For example, a session can be prevented from migrating to another shared server while parallel execution is active.i know that this maynot be the case here but please read this document and apply it as it will help you understand what is going on.

  • CPU for Dispatcher and Shared Servers

    Hi,
Is there any way to get CPU usage for Dispatcher and Shared Servers from database dictionary?
Currently I am using ps -ef to get the cpu usage of dispatcher and shared server background processes which gives time in seconds.
I want to get cpu time in 1/100th of second of in milliseconds.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

    hello Amish,
    my first idea is,
    please rename the progid in
    IPC_RFC_DISPATCHER
    like the handbooks.
I find a line in debugging where this name is hardcore stored in a report.
    I forget the name.
The tests in SM59 are dinky.
I have the problem that the tests are okay, but i haven't a connect to the IPC_RFC_SERVER_1.
Second both systems have to be unicod or non-unicode, pleas no
    mixed system-landscapes.
Hope I can help you a little bit.

  • How to remove stubborn shared servers/pcs?

Hello! So I recently got my first Mac about a month or two ago and have thouroughly enjoyed the experience thus far, even if it is a cheap refurbished iBook G4. It is a bit difficult navigating in this Intel based world now-a-days but I have been able to work around and make sacrifices as far as software is concerned.
The only real problem I have ran into is that there is a shared computer in the Finder that is named 'Connie'. I am sure this is due to it being previously owned and I have a suspicion that this server belongs to a buisness. I am able to access the server as a guest and read/write files. My real concern is whether or not they have access to my computer and also how do I go about removing this from my shared computers? I have tried all of the basics, I have removed plists, I have tried to drag it away, I have tried ejecting it, but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

To stop anybody seeing your files, turn off File Sharing in System Preferences>Sharing.
If you disconnect from the Internet does "Connie" disappear?

  • Question about shared servers/dispatchers

    Hello,
    Oracle database 11.2.0.1
If we have 2 instances running under a Oracle home, can you configure dispatchers on the same host/port in both instances? I tried to do this, but the only one came up. I'm guessing because the port is in use? If I configure different ports for the dispatchers in the instances, both handlers start.
    Thanks for the help!

As far as I know dispatchers can only work for one database instance (in single instance configuration). It makes no sense to try to share dispatchers among different database instances that manage different databases.

  • 1Z0-042: Exam topics: Shared / dedicated servers

    Hi all
Not sure if you answer this type of specific question here, but what the h3ll....
The exam topics document states that you should be able to identify when to / when not to use shared servers. However the Sybex book goes into plenty of detail on the subject (inclduing a good one in the sample questions), and Oracle Press book has a much 'lighter' view of the subject.
With this in mind, it looks like the Exam only covers one tiny aspect of the subject (a good thing from my point of view!). Am I correct, or should I be sure I know the minutae of the CIRCUITS, SHARED_SERVER_SESSIONS parameters & DISPATCHER_RATE views etc.

btThe authorative point for exam topics for 1z0-042 is:
This was updated to reflected 10gR2 topics in november 2006. (The topics could even have been changed since, but i dont think so).
Methinks your books predate that. They could even have been prepared while the exam was in Beta.
In general IMHO the Sybex book is sometimes a little over the top in these things compared to the Oracle Press, but its all good stuff anyway and useful to know.

  • Apple TV 4.4.4 Home Sharing no longer working over ethernet

My ATV home network setup has gone from working well to not at all over the last few days and I am trying to troubleshoot it, looking for folks with similar experiences.  This appeared to start on or around the time I did the 4.4.4 update, though it could be unrelated, because at that time I also switched my main home sharing server from an old Windows laptop to an old Mac Mini I just aquired for that purpose (which is a sweet little machine for $250 btw).
Situation is, with the ATV connected via ethernet, it no longer sees any home sharing servers, that are on ethernet or wifi.  It is also not available for airplay for any devices on wifi. This was working fine with the PC iTunes server on ethernet a few days ago.
If I connect both the ATV and Mac Mini iTunes server via wireless, it all works fine (but performace can suffer).  Something has changed, as the ATV on ethernet was also fine to access my macbook on the wireless network a few days ago, but again it doesn't unless the ATV is on wireless too.  Finally, the remote app on my iPhone will also only see the ATV if it is on wifi.  To me it is like Bonjour is not working over the ethernet connection. I have done a little port prodding, and this appears to be the case, but it is not conclusive.
I have reset, restored to factory and re-updated the ATV, turned home sharing on and off a 100 times, cylcled the servers, reinstalled iTunes, all sorts of stuff.
Honestly, I would more likely put the blame on something weird with the wired vs wifi network routing on my XFinity router/modem, if not for the fact that I haven't touched it for months (save a few power cycles) and I just updated the ATV when this went south.  I tried to ask Comcast about this issue, but that was like trying to explain quantum physics to the cat...
I've seen at least one other thread on this forum similar, was wondering if anyone else has had this sort of trouble since the 4.4.4 update?
    Thanks

Any news or updates in your Home Sharing problem? I am experiencing similar issues as well. I have turned on Home Sharing in two of my PCs, and my Apple TV 2 cannot see both of my PCs. I have the Remote application installed on my iPad 1, and it suddenly stopped working as well. The Remote application cannot see both of my PCs and Apple TV 2 anymore. I have also noticed that AirPlay does not work anymore as the AirPlay icon does not appear when I am watching videos on my iPad 1.
Home Sharing and AirPlay used to work the day before I have updated my Apple TV 2 to version 4.4.4. I have tried restarting, resetting the settings and restoring the Apple TV 2, and it did not resolve my issue. I have also tried disabling/enabling the Home Sharing in both of my PCs, and it also did not resolve my issue. I am leading to believe that the Apple TV 2 update to version 4.4.4 had something to do with my issue.

  • When we go for shared Server environment?

When we go for shared Server environment from Dedicated server mode?
When we have to choose thi shared Server mode?
    Which is the optimized way?

    > When we go for shared Server environment from Dedicated server mode?
You do not. It is not one or the other - it is using both correctly. You want shared server sessions to service applications (any, from web/app servers to flat clients) that are OLTP in nature. They fire off short-and-sweet SQLs that takes a second or three to execute.
A shared server pool of a few processes can service a very large number of clients.
You want to use dedicated servers to service OLAP type clients. They fire off complex SQLs that can tie up the server processes for several minutes at a time.
And that in a nutshell is how to apply the two. It is not Shared Servers versus Dedicated Server. It is about using The Right Tool For The Job. Nothing more and nothing less.
As for Windows, I will not really bother quickly with shared server connections. On Windows both shared and dedicated servers runs as threads in the main Oracle executable process image.
There is thus very little resource saving by reducing the number of threads as the footprint of a thread is tiny in comparison to a brand new process. The amount of resources saved by a reducing the number of dedicated server threads is not significant. If anything, Oracle on Windows has shown to scale better than Oracle on Linux in this regard. (refer to [url http://www.perftuning.com/pdf/Comparison_Oracle_Windows_Linux.pdf]A Comparison of Oracle Database 10gR2 Real Application Cluster Performance on Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition x64 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux x86_64 from the Performance Tuning Corporation).
And this is exactly the opposite of how Oracle behaves on Unix. Each server process is a physical kernel process. This means that a servicing a 1000 concurrent sessions with a 1000 dedicated server processes, each consuming memory and resources, are expensive. Conversely, supporting a 1000 concurrent sessions with a 100 shared server processes is (almost) 90% cheaper.
This makes Shared Server a desirable option to use to scale OLTP sessions on Unix-based systems (or any platform where Oracle does not use multi-threading but multi-processing).
PS. As the Linux kernel support Posix threads (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_POSIX_Thread_Library), it begs the question as to when Oracle is going to support multi-threading on Linux instead of multi-processing.. or at least give us the option to choose.

  • Shared Menu

at forms developer 6i the shared menu are not supported then how to disable that property if the original menu come from developer 4.5 to developer 6i???

I am having the same problem.
I have had to re-build my new MacBook Pro at least 3 times and am getting ready to do it again.
My MBP is connected to a network with 2 other PC's one Vista and the other XP. I have "Lost" the shared servers listing after I have installed other programs such as Winclone that I wanted to use backing up my Vista Boot Camp partition and another utility that would have allowed me to both read and write to NTFS formatted disks.
I have called Apple support and they have no clue.
I have worked with the company that made the driver that would allow me to frread and write to the NTFS partitions. They could not replicate the issue.
Because I have totally re-installed my system, I am now believing this is an issue or bug with Leopard and I do not know how to get further help from Apple.
    Any thoughts?
I have also done safe re-boots, removed and addes the check marks in Finder preferences to turn on and off the displ;ay of Shared items but no luck.
    Help??
I am also going to putg this in a new post

  • Shared server config issues

    Dear experts,
    Below is my environment details:
    DB: Oracle 10gR1 Base (10.2.0.1)
    OS: RHEL 5
I have configured shared servers as shown below:
    1) Set the following parameters
    dispatchers='(protocol=tcp)(dispatchers=2)'
    max_dispatchers=10
    shared_servers=4
    max_shared_servers=10
    circuits (not configured)
    2) Changed TNS parameter as below
    I modified SERVER=DEDICATED to SERVER=SHARED
    3) lsnrctl services
the output of this command shows dispatchers ready
Now coming to the issue, when i connect to the database using new tns alias, i see "NONE" displayed under "SERVER" column of the V$SESSION view. It should have been SHARED.
Appreciate your help in this regard.
    Thanks
    P

In Shared Server configuration when we see value 'NONE' , it means there is no task being processed by shared server for that session. The server column will infact show status of 'SHARED' if there is some task being processed at that particular time by the shared server process for that session. Hence to check the status, fire some big query and then check the server status .
you can check the shared server as
select server from v$session where machine='XXXX' ;--neeraj
