Shared Services - Sharing MetaData between Essbase and Planning?

I have been out of the Hyperionworld for about a 1 and 1/2 years now and am trying to playcatch-up. I am looking at Planning admin doc for 9.2.0.3 and it isdiscussing sharing models in Shared Services (old HUB stuff that Ididn't get to do much with back in the day either). At the risk of appearing dense, I wanted to verify if metadatamodels from Essbase cube can be shared with Planning applications?It may be somewhere in some doc explicitly that I am not readingbut only seems to talk about HFM and Planning sharingmodels. If this is the case has anyone used it in this manner before? Areall properties for Planning dim/members translated across fromEssbase or are there dim/member properties that I would have to goback and complete still? Any drawbacks/issues with using the sharedmodel approach that I should watch out for? Other doc you canpoint me at that discusses using this in more detail? Kathy

To be honest it looks you after some of the functionality within EPMA, though if you have an essbase database then surely you will have a source for the dimensions so this could be used to populate the planning application as well.

In EPM version 11.1.2.1 (but we noticed the problem also in previous EPM versions) when we set the value of a substitution variable in Essbase, the value is is not immediately updated in Planning: for some time we see the old value. The value in Planning remains unchanged even in we log off or exit Planning and log on again.
Instead if we restart the Planning service, the value is immediately updated
Since we would like to use the Essbase substitution variables to manage some selections in Planning Data Entru Forms, is there any way to force a synchronization, or to increase the frequence of synchronizations between Essbase and Planning?

Indeed that is a very good post on this topic.
Ultimately you want to leverage the native Reporting Application functionality within Planning versus the traditional partitioning native to Essbase (Replicated, Transparent, Linked).

I am not sure exactly what you need to know and it depends on the version
Prior to 11.1.2 it communicates using LDAP to port 28089, HTTP to 28080, JDBC to the hss relational database

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly Thanks anyway!

Sharing files between users and macs

My husband and I share an iMac. I have a MBA for traveling and my husband a PC laptop (though he rarely uses for private stuff). We both have iPhones.
We are looking for a way to:
- Share our photos (we don't use iPhoto) and some files. We would like to have this in one shared folder, that we can access from both accounts in the iMac, the MBA and ideally (though not a must) the PC and iPhones. We would both need to have admin rights to edit documents, etc.
- Have access to all the information in my account on the iMac from the MBA. Ideally, same thing for his and the PC.
- Have access to all the data remotely when traveling.
- Have all the data backed up locally (we already have a cloud backup, but we'd like to have a local backup too as it's easier and quicker to access)
We have read a lot about configuration, NAS, time capsule... but we get more and more confused, as we are obviously no tech experts.
Dropbox is not our preferred choice. We already have a cloud backup system. We'd rather have the files stored and accessed locally for everyday use.
Using a NAS to store shared folders and backup the rest sounds good, but they either seem very complicated to set up, or they have mixed reviews in terms of stability, especially to access files remotely.
Timecapsule seems easier and more straightforward, but I'm not sure it would solve the "sharing files between users and macs with admin rights"? It seems to be more focused on backing up the main drive and then providing access to the backed up files. (Though I might be completely mistaken!)
We just can't manage to have one shared folder between both accounts in the iMac. We need to grant admin rights document by document. We don't manage to make it work automatically so we both have one folder to access with full rights for all the contents inside it. And this seems to me like something that should easily be done...?
Any help, advice, proposals... would be greatly appreciated!!!

Move any file you want to the other user to access to the Shared Folder. Anything you put in that folder is available to all users.

Sharing keywords between LR and PSE 9 Organiser? :-(

OK, I've owned 3 photo products from Adobe (Photoshop Album, Lightroom and Photoshop Essentials) and have 3 keyword file formats! I use LR as my main photo organiser and have started using PSE and its Organiser but am frustrated by the lack of coherent design of keyword files. I have hundreds of keywords in LR. I had to write some Python code to convert my "Album" keywords to the LR format and it seems I have to do the same to get keywords from LR into PSE's organiser. But there's now a new problem...
Unfortunately when I import keywords into PSE's Organiser any duplication of existing keywords results in duplication in the keyword list - i.e. when I add "From file.." PSE adds to the list rather than merging! PSE is clearly not designed to re-load keywords from file any extend the keywords. If I export all my keywords and re-import them I don't expect the number of keywords to double! Oh - I can;t delete keywords before importing because I'm told everything it's 'learned' (people etc. will be lost). Keywords appear to be exportable but not importable.
I clearly cannot import keywords into PSE's organiser as I can with LR.
Is anyone sharing keywords between LR and PSE's Organiser?

Thanks, I can see how that can work and the problems. It looks like the keywords themselves cannot be easily shared and I agree that having two organising programs is problematic but I wanted to 'export' the keywords I have created including their structure from Lightroom and import them into PSE organiser. You'd think you could do this with two similar products from the same company. The organisers in question are used for two purposes and the photos in each are different - i.e. I use lightroom for my pro stuff and PSE for family/casual stuff and no photo would be present in both. It looks like PSE really isn't designed to import keywords. I have Python code to create a PSE keyword file from a lightroom file so that will have to do as it's clear there's no interoperability.

Us ean external drive formatted FAT32 or ExFat. Both OSx and Windows can read/write to the drive and both can use the same data files as long as you have a program that can open and save these files. For example, Word running both on OSx and on Windows will be able to work with the same document on the external drive.

System 11 Instalation Essbase and Planning crash ????

Hi to all,
I have install on a Windows Server 2003 SP2 64 bit, Oracle Enterprise Performance Management .... (Essbase and Planning).
Well, I have all install with my green flags, I sucessfully configurated without any problem with a Oracle 11g 64 bit database (3 schemas for SS,EPMA and Planning).
I can access through my EAS to Essbase Server and the cubes, also I can connect with Smart View to the cubes in Essbase.
Here comes the surprise !!!!!! when I log into workspace I cannot see any option of Planning, also I cannot see any option in Shared Services of Planning allthough I have (a priori) all install without problems (not the reallity.... ).
I´m getting crazy, due to I can create a datasource and an application through the "back door" http://hostname:8300/HyperionPlanning/ApplicationWizard.jsp ....
Do someone have this error or miscelanous problem?
Any help will be great !!!!

I have created the app test through the AppWizard, and allocate it into one project ( I don´t see in the HSS any Planning item).
That´s right, when I made the installation I create a plannig cluster, now I have deleted it and I only have the default one, but I still have no visibility to Planning thorugh the workspace
I´m installing hyperion system 11.1.1.3, downloaded the files in the url : http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/bi/performance-management/index.html
I suppose those files are ok.

If you get that error message then it is more than likely you have not created an application.
Go to http://<planningserver>:8300/HyperionPlanning/AppWizard.jsp and create an application.
Another thing you need to watch out for is planning clusters, sometimes people create a planning cluster through the configurator and it is not required, so you have a default cluster and an newly created cluster, make sure in the configurator you dont have extra clusters, you only need the default one.

EPMA Common Timebalance for Essbase and Planning

We are using EPMA for managing dimensions in Planning and Essbase. We have a shared ACCOUNT dimension, the account dimension is used to create an Essbase and Planning application.
We are facing issue with TIMEBALANCE property on the shared ACCOUNT dimension, when we set TIMEBALANCE for a member as NONE it works fine for Essbase application and throws out error when we deploy for PLANNING application, viceversa when TIMEBALANCE is set as FLOW it works for PLANNING and not for ESSBASE.
We don't want to maintain 2 separate ACCOUNT dimension in EPMA for ESSBASE and PLANNING just for this purpose. Is there a way to overcome the TIMEBALANCE property or a common value which will work as FLOW/NONE.

I haven't faced your specific issue, however I faced something VERY similar. We were trying to set properties for both an ASO and BSO cube, using EPMA to manage the hierarchies. Setting the ASO property would change the BSO property and vice versa. My general impression was that the Essbase property settings weren't really sorted out in EPMA. This is one reason people don't use EPMA for Essbase (yet). It's okay for Planning, but not really ready for Essbase. Hopefully it will be better in 11.1.2.

Learning Essbase and Planning - Buy or Rent a Server?

If I was planning on learning Essbase and Planning, would it be better to buy or rent a server? I renting is a better option, which companies would you recommend?
I'm planning on installing some mail servers and issue tracking websites on the server as well.

When you say renting, do you mean in the cloud or do you mean short term leasing and having the server on site (your office, your house, etc.)?
I'm doing (almost) all of my 11.1.2 puttering about in Amazon Web Services using a prebuilt machine image from Full360.com. No, I do not work for either company. No, they do not pay me to mention their name.
If you're planning on doing installs and infrastructure work, you likely don't want the Full360 AMI. When I do infrastructure, the resutls aren't pretty, so for me a prebuilt and tested AMI with the full 11.1.2 stack is worth the monthly cost.
What I like about AWS (and I suppose any cloud offering) is that I only pay for what I use and I can scale CPU, memory, and drive space as needed. I won't deny that there's been a learning curve to it but for the most part it's not been bad. If I can just get someone to show me how to set up SSL so I can securely connect in, I'll be 100% happy.
I thought a lot about buying a big desktop/workstation and then accessing that but I travel all the time -- I'd have to open up a hole in my home firewall, always have the desktop running, etc., and in the end thought that was too much hassle.
Just my $0.02.

Does ODI has Essbase and Planning 11.1 adapters or its still 9.3.1 ..Also how can I know from the .jar files which version the adapter is...

I have issue in Extracting Metadata out of Essbase cubes. I can extract Entity dimension without any issue. When I try to extract Accounts DIM I get error at SS_O MetadataExtract step with "No_matching_Enum_found". Couldn't find any refernce for it.
Tried importing V11 jar files, imported LKM_Essbase_Metadata_SQL again. Nothing seems to solve the problem.
I saw one thread abt it in Planning. No solution for it though..

Essbase and Planning 11.1.1.3 Installation issue

I have installed and configured Essbase and Planning successfully. However, I can't find them in Windows services. They are supposed to be present in windows services if I'm not mistaken.
Has anyone experienced this issue?

Have you tried to reconfigure them again, if so not it may be worth giving it a go.
If essbase has been succesfully installed and the service not created it is possible to create the service by running <HyperionHome>\products\Essbase\EssbaseServer\bin\RegisterAgent.bat
For planning you could try <HyperionHome>\deployments\<WebAppServer>\bininstallServiceHyperionPlanning.bat
