Shared USB printer

I have a 17inch MacBook Pro connected to a Fuji Xerox DoucPrint 203A USB laser printer, the MacBook Pro is connected to a wireless network along with two Windows XP Pro workstations. I would like to share the USB laser printer so the Windows XP Pro workstations can print to the Fuji Xerox DoucPrint 203A USB laser printer connected to the MacBook Pro, I assume there are many way to do this in 10.4 but wanted to know the best, hassle-free method. Any suggestions, help is much appreciated.

If you download and install Bonjour for Windows, available from Apple Downloads, this will help the Windows computers find the shared Mac printer.

  • Can a Shared USB Printer be an IP Printer too?

Apologies if this is a FAQ that was already answered somewhere else, I did look but couldn't find the answer here.
I have a local LAN with addresses 192.168.1.x. Some clients are static IP addresses like .101, .102, and DHCP is also served up to new clients in the range .200 and up, by a Belkin wireless router. The router is attached to Roadrunner so has a WAN address like 65.xx.xx.xx.
On this network is an imac G5 (static local IP) running 10.4.8. Physically attached to this by USB is a Shared USB Printer (Epson 6600 AIO). Shared printing within the local network works just fine from any client.
So now the question. Is there a way to set up IP printing so that this printer can be used remotely? Presumably would have to know the WAN address and open a port in the router somehow. Hope the question is clear, let me know if I need to provide additional info.
    Thanks for your advice

Yes, you are on the right track in your thinking.
I have not tried printing from the WAN, but for web hosting, ftp serving I have enabled port forwarding ont the router to the mac. For printing I think you need to have port 631 open and forwarded from the router to the Mac. Your particular router should have a web-based configuration setting, where you use a web browser and log into the router LAN IP.
http://www.whatismyip.com will tell you what your public WAN IP is, from your Mac, which may change occasionally if you have a typical dynamic IP service. There are some ISP services that can give you a static IP, or third-party static IP alias to the dynamic IP, if you need it.

  • Shared USB Printing not working

I have a HP Laser Jet 1012 attached to my G4 tower via USB. It is described as "Laser Jet 1012 USB" in the add printer dialog box. I can print using the G4 tower with no problem.
When I try to add this printer using my G4 Power book via shared USB printing or just USB it is described as "Laser Jet Bonjour printer". When I try to print I get a "forbidden message" in the Print Status dialog box and of course no printing results.
I have reinstalled the original and the latest printer drivers numerous times.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
    Bill T.

Yes shared printing is enabled on the G4 Tower.

  • Printer Error with Shared USB printer

    Greetings;
I have just installed my HP 7760 on my new G5, and I am attempting to print via shared usb to my G3 Imac which is running 10.3.9 I have used this setup lots in the past but with both MAC's running 10.3.9, Now all I get is "Print Error"!
I can see the shared printer on the G3 and select it on the G5 but it just results in a print error when I attempt to print.
Any thoughts would be most helpful

    Hi Greg;
    Many thanks for your interest in my problem. I have done the following;
    1. Installed the latest drivers from HP on both machines
    2. Removed and then added the printer.
    3. Repaired permissions on both computers and restarted.
This seems to be related to 10.4.3 as I have read some references to this in other threads. Prior to the G5 with 10.4.3 I was printing with the G3'es under 10.3.9 using USB sharing with no problems. I have no problem printing from either computer when the printer is connected directly and I can see the shared printer in printer setup and have no problem selecting it however I am still getting the "print error" when printing to the shared printer.
I am going to try one more experiment, I no have the printer connected directly to the G5 with printer sharing turned on. I will try to print to it from the G3and see what happens. I will post the results when complete.

i upgraded to leopard and cannot access our printer in the office anymore.
it is a mac-network and the printer is shared via usb on another machine in the office (its a lexmark e232). the mac hosting the printer is running 10.3.9.
can anyone help? tried everything i know - no results

You need to configure the queue for your USB printer using vi Server Admin, using OS X Server's Print Services.
You cannot do it using System Prefs > Print & Fax.

  • Sharing USB printer between 2 Macs via firewire

I have two Macs in my office--an iMac and a G5 tower. The iMac connects to our University network via Airport. The G5 is wired in through ethernet. My HP 1012 LaserJet is connected to the G5 by USB. Our wireless and wired connections go through different subnets.
Is there a relatively easy way to print from both machines to the usb printer hanging off the G5. I just spent a little time this morning playing with IP over firewire but my wireless iMac still can't see the printer. I also tried sharing the printer--it shows up fine on all the wired lab computers down the hall but my wireless iMac still can't see it.
    Thanks for any advice...

Don't know for certain that Printer sharing works with IP over FW, but other things like File Sharing does.
When setup with IPoFW, are both FW ports checked ON in Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations?
Does File Sharing work with it?
What are the 2 FW IPs?
Is Printer Sharing only turned on on the one with the Printer attached? If the iMac ever had it turned on, you need to turn it off and reboot as it'll be confused.

  • Non Airport wireless router & shared usb printer w/ AX

I think this is possible, I hope so. This Sunday I hope to set up 3 photo viewing stations at a soccer tournament I will be covering with many other photographers. We upload our images to Exposure Manager nightly. The center has wireless internet we can access to bring up the website on laptops running a kiosk browser. The viewers can order prints online via credit card. I would like the multiple viewing stations to be able to print out receipts to a shared laser printer (Brother 2040). The printer works fine connected to an Airport Extreme or Express. The dilemma is the laptops must be connected to the sport centers wireless network for internet access and I don't see a way to connect to both Airport and the sports centers router at the same time. If the airport was able to pick up the wireless internet connection (wirelessly) the system would work perfectly. Any ideas?? Thanks!

In Airport Admin (for the Extreme or Espress with the printer), turn off "Distribute IP Addresses." This makes the Extreme/Express a wireless access point with the Other router remaining as the master - all computers (even if they try connecting through the AEX) are then in the same network (and can see the printer). (You can also change the broadcast channel of the AEX.)

  • Can't see shared usb printer

    Hi All
Thanks in advance, have searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer.
I work in a small office using the following 3 Mac's all on a wired network
    1. PowerPC G5 - OS 10.4.11
    2. Intel G5 - OS 10.4.11
    3. G4 - OS 10.4.11
We have an Epson R340 connected via usb into mac number 1, it's all shared and mac number 3, the G4, see's it and can print to it no problem. However the Intel G5 just will not see it in the 'add printers' area.
If I plug the printer into the G4, mac 1 can see and use it but still not the Intel G5.
If I plug the printer into the Intel G5, neither of the other 2 mac's see it.
I can network the Epson printer and all 3 mac's can see and use it, but the colour is very poor, all colours look very 'washed out' and the quality is unacceptable.
Hope you can help as we have had this problem for months now and I'm pulling my hair out on this one and I havn't got that much left to pull out anyway

  • Print authentication problem with a shared USB printer

I'm trying to assist my brother with the setup of his new iMac i3 (running 10.6.4).  He is converting from a G5 iMac (which was, I believe, on Tiger) to the i3 and has a Canon MP610 printer.  The Canon MP610 printer has been connected via USB to the G5 with printer sharing on, and his wife has been able to print to the printer over Bonjour from her MacBook Pro  (OS 10.5.8) when it was shared via the G5.
As soon as we moved the printer to the i3, she became unable to print from the MacBook Pro, because it began putting documents on hold in the queue and requiring authentication to print.
Nothing we've tried will ether allow us to get past the authentication or get rid of the prompt.  We've deleted and re-added the printer multiple times, assured that the new i3 is the only one set up for sharing its connected printer - tried different user passwords to authenticate - we're stuck.  My brother is the sole user/administrator account on the i3, his wife is the sole administrator/user on the MacBook Pro.  The MP610 has been totally deleted from the old G5 so we don't think it is interfering.
They're in California, I'm doing remote support from Texas.  The computers and printer are all in the same room in their home.
I've read posts this morning in the community about this issue but they all reference Windows networks.. there is no Windows or mixed Windows-Mac model in our scenario.
    Please help!  thanks in advance.

The layout of the print window is not the same as OS 9.x and prior. There will not be a choice for double sided printing as there was pre OS X unless the printer comes with an automatic duplexer.
You will have to figure out how to print odds and evens in separate jobs and do it manually.

  • Sharing USB Printer from Window XP Machine

I just bought a new iMac and a Canon Pixma MX310 from the Apple store. Loaded the drivers on the iMac and my wife's Dell running XP.  When the printer is hooked directly to either computer it works fine. However, my wife wants it hooked up to her Dell. So I set up printer sharing and have found the printer and even gotten it to print blank pages.  The problem I have is the drivers for the MX310 don't show up as an option on the Mac when it asks me which drivers to use for the printer.  I have an Epson 740i hooked up the Dell also and have been able to share that without a problem, because the drivers show up in the window it prints without a problem.
So the question is, how do I get the drivers for the MX310 to show up in the drop down window with all the drivers that came pre-installed on the iMac?

Unfortunately the Canon Mac drivers won't work across a network in this way.
It should work the other way, with the printer connected to the iMac and shared to the Dell PC.

  • Sharing a USB printer from 10.3.9 to 9.2

    Hello,
I have a classroom with one eMac running 10.3.9, sharing an HP LaserJet 1300 and 4 flavored iMacs all running 9.2. I was able to configure a USB printer on 2 of the iMacs using Desktop Printer Utility, but the last two don't see any USB printers on the network. I'm running all 5 machines on static IP addresses and don't see any difference between the 4 iMacs.
I've already tried using article 107060 and configuring the last two machines using LPR, but was unsuccessful at that as well. I can connect to the OS X machine through the network, but not its USB printer. I also tried dragging the classic 9 network location file to these two machines, but it won't let me add it to the Network printers window.
Could someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Mike

I was just going by the help for OS 9 sharing a USB printer. It says to start USB sharing on the "host" machine, check the printer to be shared under My Printers, and then drag that printer to the desktop to create an internet location file for the printer. This file is then copied to the Network Printer tab under USB sharing on each of the machines that want to share the host's printer.
I've also tried turning off USB Printer Sharing and just adding the printer through Desktop Printer Utility but there are no USB printers listed when I try to "browse" the network.

  • Sharing a USB printer

    Hi All,
just got a Lexmark P6350 which I would like to be able to share either from my iMac or from a Windows XP box. It's a USB printer. The drivers are available for both OS's. It prints perfectly from either machine when directly attached to it but neither machine will share the printer with the other.
The computers are connected via a router (D-Link DSL-G604T) I can share files through normal file sharing processes. Ihave set up system preferences to allow printer sharing through the firewall. I have even ried setting the printer up as a Bonjour printer.
    No Luck
    Any ideas?
    James

I recommend sharing from OS X, it's easier.
Try this - especially the part about using a Color postscript driver on Windows, not the Lexmark driver:

  • AE and USB Print / Scan / Copy with HP PSC-2410

My Airport Express finds my HP printer immediately upon plugging the printer into the AE USB port. Printing to it from various macs around the house has been wonderful...but...In order to use the HP's other functions, such as scanning and copying, it seems that the printer must be directly connected to a mac in order for these functions to work.
Another poster said that he could not check his ink levels on an Epson printer through an AE USB connection, but could once he directly connected the printer to his Mac.
It seems that the AE will only act as a print server and will not allow for any other features to be shared.
Anyone else find this to be the case? Is there a fix? It is a pain to have to unplug from the AE and plug into the Mac every time I want to scan something.
    Thanks!
    STEVE

...but...In order to use the HP's other functions, such as scanning and copying, it seems that the printer must be directly connected to a mac in order for these functions to work.
That is true. The USB port on the AirPort Express suppports only printing.
Another poster said that he could not check his ink levels on an Epson printer through an AE USB connection, but could once he directly connected the printer to his Mac.
That is also true. Those utilities depend on a direct USB connection to the printer. See KB 107430, AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express: Can't use USB printer utilities while printer sharing.
It seems that the AE will only act as a print server and will not allow for any other features to be shared.
    That is exactly correct.

  • Problems Printing to Shared Windows Printer Via SAMBA (foomatic error 255)

I can NOT print from my MacBookPro to a printer that's shared out from my Windows PC. Of course, printing to this same printer from my PC works fine.
Please help me resolve this printing problem.
Read on for more details regarding my printing woes!
I can successfully setup my printer on the MAC side using the Printer Setup utility. I see the shared out printer on my MAC; I can pick the printer's manufacturer and model. Everything looks ok regarding the setup of the printer on the MAC side.
However, when I try to print a file from the MAC, the printer never prints. The print job appears to get queued on the MAC side. However, after a few seconds, the printer queue displays "foomatic-rip stopped unexpectedly with error 255" (if I selected a foomatic printer driver from the hpijs). Otherwise, it says "NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY" error (if I selected a gutenprint driver instead).
The PC's Windows event logs show no problems. Indeed, the Security event log shows successful authentication & access to the printer.
The MAC's CUPS error_log displays the these error messages:
GutenPrint fails with NTSTATUS_NOMEMORY error, then says Cannot connect to SAMBA host
hpjisGhostscriptFoomatic fails with "The process 'foomatic-rip' stopped unexpectedly with status 255"
Later, I will post the exact entries from this log (I am currently separated from my MAC laptop until later this evening).
My Apple MacBookPro is running MAC OS X 10.4.11 ("Tiger"). The printer is an HP DeskJet 5150 connected via a USB port to my DELL 8400 PC. This desktop PC is running Microsoft's "Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2").
Based on reading other posts (here) and at the Linux Open Foundation (printing), I have already done the following:
    Installed gutenprint;
    Installed foomatic (foomatic-rip v3.42.2.15);
    Installed ghostscript (espgs v7.07.1); &
    Installed hpijs (hpijs v2.7.10).
NOTE: This is NOT the same problem that I posted earlier regarding inability to print to a shared printer with Leopard (MAC OS X 10.5.0). Today's posting deals with my inability to print to the shared printer from Tiger (MAC OS X 10.4.11).
NOTE: This may be a "red herring" but you may need this additional background to help resolve my printing problem. Originally, I ran "Tiger" (MAC OS X 10.4.10) on my MacBookPro laptop. Of course, networked printing worked fine at this point. On October 28, 2007, I upgraded to "Leopard" (MAC OS X 10.5.0). Leopard was a "disaster" for me (printing, networking & many other problems). On November 9, 2007, I "punted" and re-installed "Tiger" (MAC OS X 10.4.10) from Apple's original CD. On November 15, 2007, I upgraded to MAC OS X 10.4.11 via Apple's software update utility. I vaguely recollect that networked printing was working after I returned back to Tiger.

As promised in my initial post regarding my printing problem, here are the actual error messages displayed in the Print Queue (Hp5150) and the "cups" error_log when I try to print any file to my HP 5150 that's directly connected to my DELL PC (Windows XP Pro) but shared out so that my MacBookPro should be able to print to it.
    Printer Queue Hp5150 window displays:

Again, the system Event logs on the Windows XP side show no error messages. In particular, the Security Event Log shows that authentication was successful; so, the MacBookPro's client process was granted access to the printer on the DELL PC side of the transaction.

  • How to add generic USB printer

Hi-we have an old Samsung ML 6060 laser printer that we have had networked via ethernet to 2 macs and a PC. Has always worked fine. Now we have added a new HP photo printer to our system and have it hooked up via the ethernet. Since we don't have enough spaces on our router for both printers, we want to use a USB connection for the old Samsung. We have it connected directly to our intel iMAc and want to use print sharing to our Macbook Pro. Problem is getting the USB connection up and printing. System profiler sees the printer. The driver is old and probably not very functional on the new system although it worked fine with the ethernet connection. Samsung no longer issues new mac drivers for this printer. Printer set-up utility has a hard time finding the printer when we delete and try to re-add it. We have managed to get a test to print once only. Otherwise, the dialog box says it is printing but the data light on the printer does not flash as normal and nothing is printed and everything hangs this way. So we thought we could try adding it under the generic USB printer description but not sure how to fill in the "Device URI" window USB://_________. Can anyone help with this or do we have to go out and get a new laser printer ( my husband prefers it to the ink-jet for printing music scores ) Thanks for any help!

Never mind, I figured it out. Thanks anyway!
