Shared windows printer - may not be the right section

Hi all - sorry if I do not have the right section to post this in but I have come to the end of my calm period for trying to get this to work.
I have a canon iP4200 that is connected to a windows XP box and is setup to be shared. Now I have been asked to get the mac to print directly to the printer through windows with not much luck. At the moment the setup is through a hub with file, printer etc sharing enabled. I have followed some topics on the support site to try and get it to work but with no luck.
So i guess I have to ask:
1. Is it even possible to make this work
2. if it can be done any help would be extremely appreciated as I am pulling my hair out!
Also my windows firewall is off and I have been able to brouse my windows network from mac and vice versa.
Thank you so much in advance.

I recently had this issue myself. What you need to do is toss in your Windows XP Install disc on the XP Box, and go to Add / Remove Programs, then Add Windows Components, and from there do other network services, and do unix print services. After that's installed, you'll be able to print to it just fine.

  • How do I de authorize my computer(may not be the right term read below)

I have to give my laptop to my x wife... how do I get it to where she can set up her own accounts ect. nothing secret on here to delete just need to get Itunes ect to where she would have to create her own account. don't want to do a clean install because I cannot find my OS disk. any help would be appreciated.

Re iTunes: Open iTunes on the computer you want to deauthorize. Choose "Deauthorize computer" from the Store menu and follow the instructions. Then trash the iTunes folder from Users > your account name > Music, and empty the Trash.
You owe your ex-wife the installer discs that came with the machine and belong with it, so try again to find them. An Erase & Install of the original software is by far the best preparation for handing off the Powerbook to anyone else.

  • Printing to a shared Windows printer - worked on PB not on MBP

On my old Powerbook, printing to a shared printer on a Windows workstation was a breeze. Open the printer utility, browse for a Windows printer, select it, pick the right driver and done. Printing works great.
MacBook Pro, same process, sees the printer, creates the printer object. Printing never works. I wiped the PowerBook to give it to my wife so the old settings for this remote location are gone. I've tried printing with the firewall off and the firewall on. I don't have any local sharing turned on. The only thing I can think of is that I used to use SharePoints from Hornware because at one time it made connecting to Windows shares simpler.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    DRChevalier,
Hmmm. Shouldn't matter whether it's a MBP or PB. OK, so it's Windows Printing. Perhaps you need to place the Macbook Pro in the PC's "Workgroup." When you enable sharing on the PC, you will have also created a Windows "Workgroup." Determine what that is, then use Directory Access on the MBP to include it in this workgroup. Do you know how?
Beyond that, make sure your printer queue isn't stopped, or delete it and try again. Sometimes this helps, and sometimes this gives you the opportunity to catch some small setting that makes the difference (which you overlooked before).

  • Print Problem - PDF is OK on Windows 7, but OK on Windows XP with "Acrobat Reader An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem."

I have received a PDF which prints fine in Windows 7 but with Windows XP I get "Acrobat Reader An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem." and a blank piece of paper passes through the printer. I appreciate that Windows XP is no longer supported but I would like to think that the solution to this problem is not too difficult!
    I have tried Acrobat 9, 10 and 11.
Any advice (apart from use Windows 7! ) would be most welcome.
    Many thanks.

If you use the same Adobe Reader versions with the same PDF on Windows 7 and XP, then I would expect the outcome to be the same.
Is this a local or online PDF?
If local, is the file really exactly the same?
    If online, in what browser?

  • Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Hi, i'm a Windows 7 user of HP Pavilion dm4.
It has been weeks since iTunes works properly on my computer. I'm here to seek help from professionals or people who had encountered it before. Whenever I double-click on iTunes, it prompt me a message "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." But another thing is, i'm the only adminstrator on this laptop. If I don't have permission, who has? Sigh.
I had tried uninstalling and installing iTunes from official website many times but to no avail.

    Hi,
Also, please make sure your current user is a administrator account and have permission to open the file.
Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
    Click the Security tab.
Under Group or User names, click your name to see the permissions you have.
Have you installed 3rd software in you computer? please turn off them temporarily to check if this issue still occurs.

You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item? Thats what it says when I try to open iTunes. Ive tried repairing iTunes from control panel... Ive tried reinstalling. Im running windows vista on an acer laptop. It was working fine until something (unknown to me) happened.(?) The destination its searching in is C:Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe. Are all of the computer users administrative users?
Do you have another account logged in with iTunes open, when you try to use a different account? iTunes doesn't work with fast user switching, so make sure you choose "log off" instead of "switch user" when moving between user accounts.

  • "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permission

We subscribe to a service called "Vault" which provies its documents in encrypted PDFs using the etd format. As well as Digitial Editions we have Acrobat Reader 9 installed on our PCs (Windows XP,SP2). When a user tries to download any of the documents they are seeing the following error:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item."
However, if they open Digitial Edtions (or have had it open at some point in the past) before they download the document it opens without any problems. We use ZEN works to manage our PCs, and we use something called Dynamic Local User (DLU) which means that when a students logs into a PC the user's local Windows account is created on the fly, and then when they log out it is then deleted. This means that they are effectively using Digitial Edtions for the first time everytime they log into a PC.
As anyone else seen the above error? Also, is there a way of stopping it? What does Digital Editions do the first time it is opened? Are there registry keys that we can add, which emulates the opening of Digital Editions so it doesn't have to be opened first before we can download the Vault documents?
Any advice/tips would be most welcome.

    Hi NabeelOmer,
We wonder if you have taken any action such as system restore after this issue occurred.
You might also try this command to restore your access control list.

Visual Studio made changes for your whole system, if the file has been moved or deleted this error would occur.
Since you mentioned that you get this error almost everywhere even in control panel. We suggest you repair/reinstall your Visual Studio first and check if it could be fixed.

  • Printing from MacBook to a shared Windows printer

I am having a great deal of dificulty setting up my MacBook to print to my shared windows printer. I have tried doing some reasearch on the web and have found a number of difierent atricles and I still could not get it to work.
I have also called apple support and they "can't" help because they think it's not an Apple issue. I'm not convinced.
I am running 10.4.6 and Windows XP, and my printer is a Brother HL 1430.
When I try to create a new printer on my MackBook, I click on the "More Printers" button and I select Windows Printing, Workgroup and I see the windows computer. I click on the windows machine and click Choose.
So far so good. I get a password authentication dialog box asking me to connect to the PC. I type in my account details and it is at this point that it fails.
I cannot seem to connect to the PC via this method. I am using the correct username and password - I have tried repeatedly, and I also tried setting up another account and that too failed. Both accounts were admin accounts.
When I try the username / password, I get an error informing me it cannot connect to the server with the provided username / password.
However, I do have file conectivity to the PC and I can access it's harddrive.
The strange thing is - I tried using no account name / password and it passed the authentication and I was able to see my shared printer. I set it up and it failed to print. I have since deleted this setting and I cannot replicate it. I dont understand why it rejects my account details and why it accepted blank account information, and why it no longer accepts the blank details.
I think something weired is going on here and Apple were unable to help.
I have tried using the Advanced settings via SAMBA - however, this too fails.
I am out of ideas and this is really bugging me - I have wasted over 3 hours and I still cannot print.
    Can someone please help!!
    Thanks.

Is your 'Brother' brand printer, compatible for BOTH Mac and PC? if so, it should/may have come with driver/installation software for both, (on opening the file, are thier/appear to be 2 set's of driver/instruction files).
If not, I would contact Brother at tech support, and ask if they have new/updated drivers, so the model will work on both PC's and Mac's. I'm running a 3rd party peripheral, that came with the above, i.e, 1 CD/driver installation file, 1 set is for Windows, 1 set for Mac, I installed it on both, and it's flawless.
The exception, I had to download new drivers for this to work w/ Win..ws XP with Service Pack 2, (it came with Mac drivers, and PC, but only for Win..ws XP, not Win..ws XP w/ Service Pack 2, hope this helps, and will watcgh for repost. GS

  • Cannot find shared windows printer with NEW macbook running leopard HELP!

I just bought a new Macbook this past week. Woo Hoo. I love everything about it with the exception of file sharing and printer sharing. I have a less than one year old pc running vista that is connected to a hp 1300 series all in one printer. I can not even find this printer anywhere on the mac. i have been able to connect to my pc server via the ip address and share files this way. I am at a loss and really have no knowledge of mac. it is really disheartening, as I had way less trouble setting up windows networks for my roommates in college.
Also, as a side helper, how can I setup a shared folder that can be accessed from both the mac and the pc. I would like something that I can set on the desktop of both in order to share files better and more efficiently than connecting to a server everytime I want to do this. Please help, and explain as if I am as stupid as I appear.
    Thanks.

  • Printing to a shared Windows printer

I can't seem to print to a shared Vista printer on my home network. I've scoured the Internet and this support site and have run into brick walls. According to the Apple web site: "Shared Windows printers automatically appear in the Mac OS X Printer Setup Utility so they can be added to the Macintosh as a local printer queue."
This isn't happening for me. When I bring up the Printer Setup Utility, I get the "Printer List". I click on "Add". I get the "Printer Browser". In the protocol selector, there are three protocols, none of which relate to Windows. So I click "More Printers..."
A secondary printer browser appears. I select "Windows Printing" in the top selector and "Home" (my Windows workgroup name) in the selector below that. I see three entries. These are the three computers on my home network (1 iMac, 2 Vista PCs). There are no printers.
There should be one printer, but there isn't. And that's the roadblock. I can access the shared folders on the computers in the network from my MacBook Pro and the Vista computer with no local printers can print to the shared Vista printer.
At work, I can print from this MacBook to a printer that is served by a Windows server of some kind. But on my home network, my iMac, my MacBook Pro, and my son's PowerBook are all equally unable to detect and print to the shared Vista printer. I should add that when the two Windows computers were running WinXP, the same problem existed.
My gut tells me that there is one tiny setting on either the PC or the Macs isn't set right. If anyone can enlighten me, I would be forever grateful.
    Thanks,
    Mike

I have a similar problem trying to network two Macs and a PC for printer and file sharing. I too have the nagging feeling that there's one simple setting somewhere that would cure the problem. I posted a query a week ago (4/21) and got a response from iFelix who directed me to web pages he's posted with step-by-step instructions on setting up Macs and PCs for printer and file sharing:
Sharing files between an XP PC and a Mac running OS 10.4.x
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3020.html
Printing to a printer on a XP PC from a Mac running 10.4.x
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3015.html
Printing to a printer on a Mac from a PC running Windows XP
    http://tech.ifelix.net/3000.html
The instructions didn't solve my problem but perhaps they will yours.

  • Print to a shared Windows printer

OK, here is a scenario that I hope someone can help me with. I teach at a university, and I have in my office an elderly PowerMac G4-450 which, by choice, I use instead of the shiny new Dell PC that my department has generously provided for me (I like iWork way better than MS Office).
The Mac, of course, can't be upgraded beyond Tiger, so I run 10.4.11. The PC has a local shared printer on a parallel port, so I can't plug it into the Mac, but would like to be able to print to it from the Mac. So here is the problem: the print setup menu on Tiger does not allow you to specify a Windows domain, only a Workgroup. The PC is part of a domain, so its shares don't show up on the Mac. I have no control or authority over the configuration of the PC, so I am stuck with a printer on my desk that I can't get to without transferring files around and messing with two computers constantly.
Does anyone know if there is some trick for accessing a shared Windows printer that is a member of a domain? Is there some third party app or driver or hack or something that might make this printer visible from the Mac?

http://www.ifelix.net/tech/ has some hints on sharing printers between various flavors of Windows and Mac; depends on the OSs in play as to whether they actually got a guide written for it or not. Maybe something there will help.
As a side note, if you have access to a fast enough Mac, that will take 10.5 and has a firewire port, you could hook up that older PowerMac to it via firewire, boot up the PowerMac 450 in target disk mode (hold down T key while booting up) and then from the faster Mac, install OS 10.5 onto the externally mounted hard drive now appearing on its desktop that is your PowerMac 450 hard drive. That's how I squeezed 10.5 onto an old 2002 Quicksilver G4/800 computer a few years back.
