SharePoint 2013 Excel Services Blue Spinning Icon After Re-Open

Troubleshooting an issue (or determine if it's a normal function) where Excel Services will open a external data connected excel file the first time and give a datasource error when attempting to update. After clearing the error message window manually I
close the open file with the x in the top right or back button and re-open. Once I re-open, excel services spins on the file for an infinite amount of time. Other excel files open without issue, only ones specifically with external data connections spin consistently.
I have removed the service application and re-created. The ULS logs show nothing beyond the attempt to refresh the data and open the file as they should. This is a new environment.
Is this part of the operation of Excel Services? Or is this specific to external data connections?

Which type data did you use? Was it SQL data or other data?
- SQL Data
What errror did you meet when you attempted to update?
- Refresh hadn't been configured yet. Received a "entitydatasource" error, i.e. couldn't refresh since it wasn't setup correctly.
How did you configure the external data connection for excel service?
- Initially kerberos/WinAuth, later SSS.
Whether the other excel files you mentioned was the files without external data
- All files that have external data experience the issue.

Do we require to install microsoft excel in sharepoint 2013 server?. if require to use sharepoint 2013 excel services.
In our organisation, development team is asking to install office 2013 in SharePoint 2013 server to use different services, where as architecture team not allowing for the same. I need to provide proper justification for installing office 2013 in SharePoint
2013 server. Please provide me the correct solution for the same.

No, you do not need to install Office on the SharePoint server to utilize the Excel Services. Office should not be installed on the SharePoint server.
Do they need Office Web Apps? Are they looking to have the capability to edit documents in the browser maybe? Or have document preview on search? Office Web Apps would be required for this, but this is a different product than Office.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Reporting Services & OLAP Cubes for Data Modeling.

I've been using PowerPivot & PowerView in Excel 2013 Pro for some time now so am now eager to get set up with Sharepoint 2013 Reporting Services.
Before set up Reporting Services  I have just one question to resolve.
What are the benefits/differences of using a normal flat table set up, compared to an OLAP cube?
Should I base my Data Model on an OLAP Cube or just Connect to tables in my SQL 2012 database?
I realize that OLAP Cubes aggregate data making it faster to return results, but am unclear if this is needed with Data Modeling for Sharepoint 2013.
    Many thanks,
    Mike

So yes, PV is an in-memory cube. When data is loaded from the data source, it's cached in memory, and stored (compressed) in the Excel file. (also, same concept for SSAS Tabular mode... loads from source, cached in mem, but also stored (compressed) in data
files, in the event that the server reboots, or something similar).
As far as performance, tabular uses memory, but has a shorter load process (no ETL, no cube processing)... OLAP/MDX uses less memory, by requiring ETL and cube processing... technically tabular uses column compression, so the memory consumption will be based
on the type of data (numeric data is GREAT, text not as much)... but the decision to use OLAP (MDX)/TAB (DAX) is just dependent on the type of load and your needs... both platforms CAN do realtime queries (ROLAP in multidimensional, or DirectQuery for tabular),
or can use their processed/in-memory cache (MOLAP in multidimensional, xVelocity for tabular) to process queries.
if you have a cube, there's no need to reinvent the wheel (especially since there's no way to convert/import the BIDS/SSDT project from MDX to DAX). If you have SSAS 2012 SP1 CU4 or later, you can connect PV (from Excel OR from within SP) directly to the
    MDX cube.
Generally, the benefit of PP is for the power users who can build models quickly and easily (without needing to talk to the BI dept)... SharePoint lets those people share the reports with a team... if it's worthy of including in an enterprise warehouse,
it gets handed off to the BI folks who vet the process and calculations... but by that time, the business has received value from the self-service (Excel) and team (SharePoint) analytics... and the BI team has less effort since the PP model includes data sources
and calculations - aside from verifying the sources and calculations, BI can just port the effort into the existing enterprise ETL / warehouse / cubes / reports... shorter dev cycle.
I'll be speaking on this very topic (done so several times already) this weekend in Chicago at SharePoint Saturday!

  • Creative Cloud Desktop App stuck on blue spinning wheel after update.

After searching the forums, I found a post suggesting a fix.
    I performed the following steps:
    1- uninstalled CC desktop app
2- deleted all the preference files in the OOBE folder for my user profile
    3- rebooted
4- downloaded CC desktop app again and reinstalled
I get stuck on a blue spinning wheel after the login prompt. All I can see is the behance tab and the apps tab. No home screen, no files tab, no fonts tab... I can go into preferences but cannot make any changes, as it goes back to waiting. My internet access works fine, meanwhile.
Can someone provide suggestions? I'm spending a LOT of time trying to resolve this.
    Thank you

    This worked for me:
Open Finder, click on Go > Go to Folder. Type in ~/library and hit enter.
Open Application Support/Adobe folder and rename OOBE folder to OOBEold.
Click on Apple icon on the top left, select System Preferences
Choose the network that is currently connected to internet that can be Ethernet or
Airport(Wireless). Click on Advanced button and click Proxies Tab.
Under 'Select a Proxy server to Configure' Uncheck all the proxy check boxes, then uncheck 'Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV)'.
    Hope this helps someone else.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the SharePoint 2010 Excel Service cannot work with SQL Server 2012.
Did you install Service Pack 1 for SharePoint 2010?
SharePoint 2010 Service Pack 1 is required for SQL Server 2012 PowerPivot for SharePoint features.
Please check if the Service Pack 1 is installed for SharePoint 2010. If not, please download it from the link below and install it:

    Hi Amit,
If your task is created by a workflow (first) and stored in a separate task list, you can create another workflow on this particular task list, then each workflow instance would check if current task is expired (not approved/rejected), then
determine if update current task's "Task Outcome" as approved (and update task status as complete), and then create a retention policy on this paricular task list to trigger the workflow on due date .

  • Exchange Server 2013 POP3 Service on CAS cannot after Upgrade to SP1

Exchange Server 2013 POP3 Service on CAS cannot after Upgrade to SP1
When I manual start MSExchangepop3 Service on CAS It show "The Microsoft Exchange POP3 Service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
    In event log show POP3 EventID 1018 , 1019 , 1036
It said like this blinding already use (0.0.0.0)
The point is "IF I SET BINDING FOR 995 , MSEXCHANGE POP3 Service will automatic stop"
Does anyone face this issue please?
    Thank you

You could check what (if anything) else is running on that port.
From a command prompt, type netstat -ano | find 995
This will give you the Process Identifier (PID) for the process that is running on port 995. Then you can open Task Manager, add PID as an additional column, and find out what that process is.
    Hope that helps.

  • Failed to download chart or image in SharePoint 2010 excel services

    Hi,
I have one document library in SharePoint 2010. I have uploaded one excel sheet which is having chart. Now when I am trying to open it in browser, but it is showing me below error on chart part of excel sheet.
'Failed to download chart or Image'
This is happening on prod server. I tried similar process on lower environment in SharePoint 2010. It is absolutely working fine. I checked all services, settings on both farm but doesn't find any clue.
    Please help.

    Hi,
What do you mean by lower environment? Does it mean the lower version of SharePoint server?
To solve this issue should try changing the "Maximum Chart Size" Excel Services Trusted Location setting.
By default it is 1MB, so if a chart is bigger than that, it won't render.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Reporting services not fetching data via linked server

We have a functional SharePoint 2013 farm in production with WFE (Server 1 , windows server 2012) and WFE ( Server 2 , windows server 2012) and SharePoint databases including report server databases on  (Server 3, which SQL Server 2012 on windows
    server 2012)
Kerberos Authentication is enabled and Windows Authentication happens. Claims to Windows Service seems to work correctly too. No double hop issue. The SharePoint Reporting Services seem to be configured correctly and Reports get generated as expected
    in the following cases.
     1. If data is being pulled from Server A (SQL Server 2008 R2 Server on Windows Server 2008), Report gets generated no issues.
     2. If data is being pulled from Server B (SQL Server 2008 R2 Server on Windows Server 2008), Report gets generated no issues.
    The problem:-
We have a view on Server A, which is fetching data from Server B. This report does not get generated. Gives an NT/Authority logon failure. Server B is created as a linked Server on Server A. The setting to run under users security context is checked.
If I execute Query Builder from Report Builder 3.0, the query on the view gets the data and data is displayed in the report for next 10-15 min but after that the connections gets lost or if the user logs out and logs back in, the connection is lost
    again.
Has some one experienced a issue like this? Can a report not work on a view getting data from linked server? Or I have missed  some thing really important.
    Any help is highly appreciated?
    cheers!

  • SharePoint 2013 - consuming service applications from a 2010 farm?

    Hi all,
This question relates to both SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013. Does anyone know whether it is possible/supported for a SharePoint 2013 farm to consume service applications from a 2010 farm (search/UPS etc. via SA publishing)?
There’s obviously plenty of documentation explaining how this would work the other way around (2010 farm consuming SA’s from a 2013 farm). Unfortunately, I haven’t found that much info on the scenario I’ve described above.
    Many thanks
    Matt

I don't know that it won't work, but in the article dealing with upgrades MS specifically recommends upgrading Services Farms first when upgrading mixed installs.  So you should be able to share a 2013 service with a 2010 farm, but not the other way
around.  You can read about it here:

  • Sharepoint 2013 Excel External Data Source Refresh Issue

I have been facing this issue for quite some time now.. i have created an Excel sheet in Excel-13 and have imported data from an external data source [SQL server 2012].
Everything is working fine, with the excel sheet on the desktop. Data refreshes, every-time i open the excel file and also at regular intervals that i have configured in the data source properties.
The problem begins when i save that excel sheet on my sharepoint server. the issues that i am facing are :
    1. Changes made into the original data source, are not reflected immediately inside the excel sheet inside the browser. after 5-10 minutes, it reflects the changes..
    2. The data doesn't refreshes automatically. After i update my data inside the sql server table, i have to manually trigger the refresh of the data connection when viewing the excel sheet inside the browser, even though i have marked "Refresh when opening
the file", and refresh every 1 minute inside the excel sheet. Any solutions ??
I have been troubled a lot by this issue, and seek for some quick solution.. Any help here ??

I found the solution finally, my self ..
Issue - 1 : It's going to take atleat 5-minutes to refresh the data connection, that is generally not a big time span.
    Issue - 2 :
--> Set Your connection to refresh everytime the file is opened. go to internet explorer -> file -> internet options -> general -> Browsing History -> Settings -> Check for newer versions of stored pages... Check 'Every time I visit the
    webpage'.
Now everytime i update your original data source, wait for 5-10 minutes and refresh my web page containing the excel sheet.. The Contents of the excel sheet are updated as desired..

  • Sharepoint 2013 - Search service not working

We have set the search service application to crawl incrementally. The crawls are taking a long time. The content is not vast over the single farm but we do have a few sizable document libraries, lists and media assets. Suggestions as to what to check
again first? Screen shot of the search admin page.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that Search service failed to work in SharePoint 2013.
The cause is that Accounts that are used by application pools or services are members of the Administrators group on the local computer.
I recommend to change the user account to a predefined account, or to a domain user account that is not a member of the Administrators group.
