SharePoint Foundation 2013 Optimization For Large File Transfer?
We are considering upgrading from WSS 3.0 to SharePoint Foundation 2013.
One of the improvements we want to see after the upgrade is a better user experience when downloading large files. It can be done now, but it is not reliable.
Our document library consists of mostly average sized Office documents, but it also includes some audio and video files and software installer package zip files ranging from 100MB to 2GB in size.
I know we can change the settings to "allow" larger than default file downloads but how do we optimize the server setup to make these large file transfers work as seamlessly as possible? More RAM on the SharePoint Foundation server? Other Windows,
SharePoint or IIS optimizations? The files will often be downloaded from the Internet, so we will not have control over the download speed.
SharePoint is capable of sending large files, it is an HTTP stateless system like any other website in that regard. Given your server is sized appropriately for the amount of concurrent traffic you expect, I don't see any special optimizations required.

I see information like this posted warning against doing it as if large files are going to cause your SharePoint server and SQL to crash.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/praveenh/archive/2012/11/16/issues-with-uploading-large-documents-on-document-library-wss-3-0-amp-moss-2007.aspx
"Though SharePoint is meant to handle files that are up to 2 gigs in size, it is not practically feasible and not recommended as well."
"Not practically feasible" sounds like a pretty dire warning to stay away from large files.
I had seen some other links warning that large file in the SharePoint database causes problems with fragmentation and large amounts of wasted space that doesn't go away when files are removed or that the server may run out of memory because downloaded
files are held in RAM.

Hi!
Let me start with a short background:
I've developed an ASP.Net application which currently uses Apache Solr for search and retrieval operations and for that purpose it works well. However, the users of this application has started to ask for facilities such as discussion forums, document-collaboration
(webdav, versioning, workflow...), calendars etc. and I'm faced with a feeling that I'm about to embark on a journey where I will develop functionality which is present in some of the "free" tools that Microsoft offers.
I've downloaded Search Server Express 2010 and in a very short amount of time I was able to develop a rather, well, sophisticated collaboration environment which gives me almost all of the above. Search is a KEY-feature that is one of the major concerns
for me as Solr provides alot of very sophisticated search-related operations but I've heard alot of good stuff about the Search Server included in SP Foundation 2013, which makes me wonder what that would give me if I take the plunge...
I'm a complete newbie to this SP-related stuff so I thought I'd better ask the pros in this forum so I don't make any unwise decisions leaving me in the dust :)
Soo, my dear fellow forum members - what would be the best way to go about this given the following facts:
small workgroup (8 people)
possibility to handle office-document, pdf-files and plain-text
discussion forums (both team-based and public)
team calendars
possibility to provide, say, a REST-api for digesting text-based data
powerful search facility able to index all of the document formats mentioned above
I'm leaning towards SharePoint Foundation 2013... what do you say - will it provide the above?
Many thanks to you all in advance,
/PeterSimple answer: yes. SharePoint Foundation sounds like an excellent choice. There's one question that you'll need to answer: 8 people is not much, but how much data are they working with? That's probably not going to be an issue, but something you need
to be aware of.

SharePoint Foundation 2013 SP1 for Microsoft Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 R2 SP1
For subsequent installation FIM 2010
R2 SP1, I must create a Web application
with the classical method of authentication. According to
Microsoft (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj863242(v=ws.10).aspx),
it is created using PowerShell the following commands:
$ AdminCredentials = Get-user domain
\ contosoAdmin
• $ adminManagedAccount = New-SPManagedAccount -Credential $ adminCredentials
• New-SPWebApplication -Name "FIM SharePoint Web Application" -ApplicationPool "FIMAppPool" -AuthenticationMethod "Kerberos" -ApplicationPoolAccount $ adminManagedAccount -Port
80 -URL http://www.contoso.com
But these commands do not specify an account for
Web services applications,
and services of that applications will run under the account
under which installed Sharepoint. As a result,
the Administration Console Sharepoint error occurs:
the application service account has
local administrator rights. But it should not
be.
I ask for advice on how to solve this problem.Where I can found ULS Log and configuration details as well?
I have errors:
Accounts used by application pools or service identities are in the local machine Administrators group.
One or more web applications are configured to use Windows Classic authentication.
When I create a Web application through the
web interface, and select
the account for the application pool and application services
(see. Screenshot). So I decided
that the account application services
become account under which installed
Sharepoint, which has local administrator rights.
And the application pool account to the
administrators group is not included. Therefore,
the question arises: what kind of account
reports error ::
there is only one Web application (but
before I create and delete the same):

help to solve the error, please. -
Today I had requirement, where we have to use the SharePoint Foundation 2013 (free version) to build an intranet portal ( basic announcement , calendar , department site , document management - only check-in check-out / Version).
Please help me regarding the license and size limitations. ( I know the feature comparison of Standard / Enterprise) I just want to know only about the installation process and license.
6 Server - 2 App / 2 Web / 2 DB cluster ( so total license 6 windows OS license , 2 SQL Server license and Guess no sharepoint licenes)Thanks Trevor,
Is load balance service also comes in free license... So, in that case I can use SharePoint Foundation 2013 version for building a simple Intranet & DMS ( with limited functionality). And for Workflow and content management we have to write code.
Windows Network Load Balancing (the NLB feature) is included as part of Windows Server and would offer high availability for traffic bound to the SharePoint servers. WNLB can only associate with up to 4 servers.

SCSM 2012 R2 Self Service Portal is supported on Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation 2013 Sp1 or not
Hello,
I have a requirement to install Self Service Portal on one dedicated Server and found that Both the Web Content Server and SharePoint Web Parts can be installed on single Server. I want to use Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 Foundation Server as
it is free but it is not supported on Windows Server 2012 R2.
My query are -
Can we use Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2013 Sp1 for the same purpose.
Can we install Both the Web Content Server and SharePoint Web Parts on One Computer for Self Service portal
I was referring the below link which says that Sharepoint 2013 is not supported, does it mean for Sharepoint foundation 2013 Sp1 is also not supported.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=24983
Please help.
Thanks,
Ankurfor background, there are actually three parts here. there is a SharePoint team site, there is the content distribution website, and there is the data access website. the data access and the content website are almost always collocated on the same servers,
since they are both IIS virtual directories. the sharepoint team site is packaged for 2010, but it's been
successfully installed on 2013 without problems.
you have a couple of options:
you can put all three web componets on the same server by using foundation 2010
you can put all three on the same 2013 server using the method above
you can put the two iisvds on a server and install the team site using the method above
you can install the content and data access services on a separate server, and then install a scrap foundation SharePoint and export out the team site and import it into your existing SharePoint site -

SharePoint Foundation 2013 - report / chart / Graph for Employee vacation.
In SharePoint Foundation 2013 I want to create a report / chart / Graph for Employee (Employee Id,Employee Name & Department) which will show month wise from which date to which date Employee are on vacation in particular department.
I'm thinking to create one List where where user will enter there vacation details and from that list report I will create chart / Graph Department wise to check the Employees availability.
Please provide some good example or idea in detail for this.Hi,
Chart Web Parts are useful for visually representing data in line charts, bar charts, and other views. Charts enable you and other users to view performance information at a glance.
In SharePoint 2013, chart web part is one of the discontinued features. We usually use Excel Service to replace it, however, Excel Service is only available in Enterprise edition, so we need to figure out coding methods or third party tool if you are using
Foundation edition.
Here are some links for workaround in your situation, please check if they can be help:

Reports for Sharepoint Foundation 2013
The farm consists of two servers :
server01 : SharePoint Foundation 2013 Web Front End and Application Server
server02 :SQL Server 2012, hosts config and content databases
I need to create some basics reports and pivot tables reports with totals or calculations using lists from
multi-sites of a single Collection. How ca I do that ?
Thanks for help. The easiest way to do that would be to use PowerPivot and Excel Services. But those are both features that aren't available in Foundation. You would need to upgrade to SharePoint server. I don't know of any way to do pivot tables in SharePoint
without Excel Services which requires SharePoint Server.

Site Login Behavior For SharePoint Foundation 2013 Users With Expired Passwords?
What are the most user-friendly ways of getting external users with expired AD passwords back into the SharePoint site with a new working password?
We already send automated email notifications to users reminding them to change their soon-to-expire passwords. However, sometimes they miss seeing the email notifications before the password expires (such as after returning from vacation or just carelessness
and lack of attention to email messages) or they see the warning messages and forget to act on it.
When this happens and they try to log into the SharePoint site from the Internet, their login fails without telling the user the reason they can't log in is because their password expired. So, they end up confused and call the help desk to get their
password reset.
Is there a way to set up SharePoint Foundation 2013 login in a similar way to the OWA login so that, when a user with a correct but expired password tries to log in, it gives them a prompt to set a new password right there rather than just an error indicating
their login failed for unknown reasons or password is "incorrect?"It could be done. You get a different event log entry for an expired login attempt than for a wrong password, 4625 events denote a login failure and an error ID of 23 denotes a logon failure.
A naff, but simple, approach would be to create a tool that checks your server logon event log for 4625 entries and then emails that user, or the help desk, or security, that they're trying to get onto your system with expired credentials.
For a more polished experience you've got a lot more work and bluntly it's going to be impractical for you. You'd have to re-write sections of the SharePoint authentication process or intercept the process, both are risky and not a good idea to try.
There's a really interesting paper here that might be of interest, it won't help you in your current situation but it might shed more light on the overall authentication/authorisation process.

Duplicate Search Databases in SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm
I seem to have 2 seperate issues with Search within my SharePoint Foundation 2013 Farm. This is a new Farm, so I can remove the search service application and re-create if this is a way that can clear the 2 issues I am experiencing.
Issue 1:
For some reason I have 2 instances of the following search related DB's:
SearchAdminDatabase
SearchAnalyticsReportingDatabase
SearchGathererDatabase
SearchLinksDatabase
1 instance of each of the databases all report database status of "No Action Required" and the other instance of all the DB's report a database status of "Not Responding".
Issue 2:
My search service application seems to be working fine as I am able to crawl content and retrieve results, however the DB's associted with this search service application are reported with the following warning within the SharePoint Health Analyzer. I have
been unable to run the Upgrade-SPContentDatabase command against these databases as I get a message saying that the content database could not be found:
Title
Databases running in compatibility range, upgrade recommended.
Severity
2 - Warning
Category
Configuration
Explanation
The following databases have versions that are older than the current SharePoint software, but are within the backwards compatible range:
Search_Service_Application_AnalyticsReportingStoreDB_a3c64b2f3b9b4a5d83383ec0b1ecfcf4,
Search_Service_Application_CrawlStoreDB_ffb8d716450242cc849a7f44f521bfc9,
Search_Service_Application_DB_0fe433c02db6435db85285e9fd83863e,
Search_Service_Application_LinksStoreDB_75efb2f689cf49f19c98a5a8155e47b7.
Remedy
To achieve optimal results from these databases, use Upgrade-SPContentDatabase to upgrade Content databases, or psconfig.exe to upgrade other databases. For more information about this rule, see "http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142697".
Kevin EvansAt time people create search service application and delete it. SA is deleted but database were not deleted for some reason. so these might be those stale database. You can delete them if you want

If you want a report of all of your SharePoint databases that includes the GUIDs and related property values, use the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell.
There are several Windows PowerShell cmdlets you can use to find all of the SharePoint databases and then print this report to a text file. The quickest and perhaps easiest cmdlet is “Get-SPDatabase”. Run this cmdlet in the SharePoint
2010 Management Shell to list all of the SharePoint Server databases with properties for each one. From this potentially large list you can then obtain specific information such as the database ID by using additional syntax in your cmdlet. Similarly, also
in the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell, run “Get-SPDatabase | Sort-Object
disksizerequired -desc | Format-Table Name” and you will get a simple list of the names for each database. You can then print this list to a text file by adding, “| out-file c:\db.txt” to the end of the command.
For detailed information, see
Windows PowerShell for SharePoint Server 2010,
Database cmdlets,
Get-SPDatabase, and
Get-SPContentDatabase.

SharePoint Foundation 2013 - Search Configuration Issue - 2 App Servers and 2 Front-End Servers
Hi,
We have a SharePoint Foundation 2013 with SP1 Environment.
In that, we have 2 Front-End Servers and 2 App Servers. In the Front-End Servers, the Search Service is stopped and is in Disabled state and in the 2 App Servers in One App Server, Search is Online and in another Search is Starting but goes to Stopped sooon
after.
Originally, we had only 1 App Server and we were running our Search Service and Search Service Application in that. Now since the index location became full and we were unable to increase the drive there, we added one more App Server and now the issue is
Search is not properly getting configured in either of these App servers. What we want to do is run Search only in the new App Server, because we have a lot of storage space for Index locations here, but in the older App Server, not run Search at all. We
tried keeping the Search Service disabled and ran the below PowerShell Scripts, but none of the ones are working. These scripts are creating the Search Service Application, but the error of "Admin Component is not Online", "Could not connect
to the machine hosting SharePoint 2013 admin component" is coming up.

Can I get some help please?
Karthick SHi Karthick,
For your issue, could you provide the
detail error message of ULS log to determine the exact cause of the error?
For SharePoint 2013, by default, ULS log is at
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\LOGS
For troubleshooting your issue, you can try to run the SharePoint Products Configuration Wizard on your WFE servers and run the script for configuring the search service on SharePoint
Foundation:
[string]$farmAcct = "DOMAIN\service_Account"
[string]$serviceAppName = "Search Service Application"
Function WriteLine
Write-Host -ForegroundColor White "--------------------------------------------------------------"
Function ActivateAndConfigureSearchService
