SharePoint on a separate srver

Hello,
I have a question for SharePoint server. So we are a company and we would like to buy and use SharePoint Server without Office package. The question is: Is it possible to use our own server instead of SkyDrive. We would like to save the data on our
server but using SharePoint?
Thank you !

You can run SharePoint Server on your own server, it's called "SharePoint on-premises". You can start reading moreabou this over here :
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607968(v=office.15).aspx
You even have a free version called Sharepoint foundation.
Having said that, running SP on-premises does have a cost in terms of infrasructure and support. For a small company, and if you don't have extensive customation needs or super strict security policies, I'd recommend to go in the cloud.

  • Trying to open PowerView on SharePoint 2013 throws an error

    Hello,
I am having some serious issues with a vanilla install of SharePoint 2013 in a dev environment.
SQL and SharePoint are in different servers.
I installed PowerPivot in the SQL Server, then I proceeded to run the PowerPivot configurator in the SharePoint server.
The configurator proceeded to validate and setup PowerPivot in a site-collection of my choice (a BI Service Center site). It seems like it completed withou any errors.
I manage to create a PowerPivot sub-site without any issues.
I can use Excel services without any issues (so far).
I can create semantic models pointing to Excel files or databases at the remote SQL server without any issues.
However if I try create a PowerView report, the system immediately returns me a "something went wrong" error page. By looking at the correlation, here is what I found:

Looks like there is something wrong with a web service, perhaps? Has anyone ever experienced such issue before? Should I try to run the PowerPivot configurator to repair the installation?
I am wondering if there is a better way to troubleshoot this. Or even better is someone has a direct solution to this problem :)
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Regards,
    P.

Upon investigating further I found out that the issue here is because there are files related to SSRS webservices which are missing.
Apparently, installing the SSRS in SharePoint mode at the SharePoint server solves the issue.
My confusion is around the fact that there is an SSRS add-in for SharePoint which is separate from the installation of SSRS in SharePoint mode. This led me to conclude that the SSRS in SharePoint mode should be installed on my SQL Server, while the add-in
should be installed on the SharePoint server. It never occurred to me that SSRS SharePoint mode should be installed in the SharePoint server.
In fact, this still does not make sense to me and while I can understand that installing SSRS at the SharePoint server is a quick way to fix the issue, there must be a
cleaner way to do this that separates that allows SSRS to be installed on a server different than SharePoint. Otherwise, why would MSFT provide the SSRS SharePoint add-in as a separate set-up?
    Cheers,
    P.

  • What Has Happened to Workflow in SharePoint 2013

I am at a loss to get workflow 2013 to work with SharePoint 2013. I am astonished that workflow (other than the broken and buggy 2010 version) is not part of SharePoint 2013. What on earth were they thinking. as if that is not bad enough they have managed
to break the installation of WorkFlow 2013. This has been reported numerous times by numerous people and needless to say the response from Microsoft has been complete silence.
In desperation I have just created a virtual machine with 2012R2 standard edition. I have installed (using the SharePoint 2013 +sp1 disk) the SharePoint Prerequisites. Next I follow the link they have provided to "optional software" where it
lists workflow manager. Instead of running an MSI or EXE they run the Web Platform Installer 5.0. After a bit of downloading and installing it tells me: "We're sorry. The following products have failed to install.
    Microsoft Windows Fabric V1 RTM
This product did not install successfully: Invalid command line argument"
So SharePoint 2013 doesn't have workflow and this bug has been present since it came out and the web is filled with people asking about it.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you for that. You missed my point. I don't care whether it is embedded in SharePoint or a separate system. What I care about is that the installation/configuration is not included in the SharePoint installation. It is an optional extra.
We don't have to create the individual tables and databases in SQL and that is also a separate system. We don't have to configure IIS and that is a separate system so why is the installation and configuration of workflow not treated in the same way? That
is what I was getting at.
I most certainly have followed their instructions. Lets be honest they are very straight forward.
    Microsoft's instructions are clear:
    1. Download and run the Microsoft Web Platform Installer
    2. Type "workflow" in the search box.
    3. Click "Add" for the Workflow Manager V1 RTM
    4. Click "Install"
Even if you download the workflowmanager.msi that just runs the web platform installer and searches for "workflow". Regardless of which you choose; now all you have to do is wait for the error message which comes shortly after this. I have just
typed this from memory after several hours in the pub so it is not that difficult. If you would care to point out where I have not "specifically follow[ed] the directions" I would be most grateful.
Now let me tell you what I have found. If I create a virtual machine with Windows 2012R2 and follow the instructions as outlined above it installs perfectly well. If I create another machine and install the SharePoint pre-requisites and then follow the instructions
as outlined above it does not install at all. Do you think this is because I am not running the web platform installer correctly? My latest experiment is to install it first and then install SharePoint. That seems to hold some promise of actually working
but if that works then the Microsoft installation instructions are wrong because they don't mention any of this until after SharePoint is installed.
Looking at the response from Dai Webb below it would seem that there is quite a lot that needs to be done that isn't mentioned in any Microsoft instructions or anywhere else that I have found. Perhaps that is the problem but if it is how come all those organizations
you mentioned have installed it? Did they know about this or is there yet another way of installing it?

  • Two SharePoint server Farms using different configuration databases with same content DB's

    Hi everyone,
I am having strange problem while cloning the environments for SharePoint 2007 farm. We cloned the WFE and DB servers with different names. When the configuration wizard has run pointing to the new DB server for complete the new FARM, The config is pointed
to the new Database server but the content databases remains same as old. This makes the production and cloned sites pointed to the same content.
How can this be possible to have a SharePoint farms with separate config DB's and same content DB's. Please advise and now the search service in the production is also broken.
    Thanks keshav,Share point Developer

    Hi,
This is one reason  why you should always use SQL Aliases when configuring SharePoint
Stop the SharePoint Services, you can use Server Manager on the WFE
    From the command line
    Enter CLICONFG
    Highlight TCPIP, Click Enable
Click on the Alias Tab, and Click Add
    Click the TCPIP Radio Button
Enter the (Old Database Server Name) in the Server Alias Box
Enter the (Cloned Database Server Name) Server Name in the Server Name Box
    Uncheck, Dynamically Assign
Enter Port 1433, and Click OK. Make sure on your new SQL Server that you don't have an inbound rule blocking Port 1433.
On the new Cloned Server WFE start the SharePoint Services
    Run IISReset
On The WFE and the App Server. Start the SharePoint Services, you can use Server Manager
I would normally test this by stopping the SQL Service on the Old Server and login to SharePoint on the Cloned Server...
    Cheers,
    -Ivan

  • Saving MPP to SharePoint 2013 site from Project Pro 2013 fails

When syncing from MS Project Pro 2013 to SharePoint 2013 it does not save the MPP file in the Site Assets
Have MS Project Pro 2013, SharePoint 2013, IE 9, Windows 7
    The scenario is as follows.
    1. Have a SharePoint Project site
    2. I open up the task list in the SharePoint site and added tasks just using the available default fields that are provided. NO external links
    are in the task list.
    3. Selected the Open with MS Project option in the task list ribbon. MS Project 2013 launched from my desktop with the task list opened in it.
    4. In Project selected the Sync with SharePoint option and it did sync successfully with task list but it did NOT save the project file in the
SharePoint site.  In addition, No error or warning message appeared.
    5. Selected Save button in MS Project – again it did not save to SharePoint but instead brought up the Save As screen again.

    Karen,
To the best of my knowledge synching a Project file with a SharePoint task list and saving the project file to a library on SharePoint are two separate processes.
You may synch the file to the SP list and then save the Project file to a library.  Are you using Project Server?

  • How to integrate AD CS and SharePoint Server

    Dear Expert,
I will set up the lab for digital signature, I have AD CS and SharePoint Server in separate machine.
How do I integrate? and it's possible to use SharePoint for digital signature solution.
    Can you share How to?

    Hi,
For the documents which are stored on  SharePoint server, user can easily find out who had edited the documen by the ModifiedBy column, and the version history, so there is no need to  sign them.
If you  want to provide furthur protect after the document has been downloaded from SharePoint, you can consider AD RMS integration with SharePoint, i.e., the information right management.

  • Can you use the same form for different datasheets?

Hello! Thanks in advance for your time.
To keep this short, I have created a form at my place of work to do a type of process audit. The form has worked extremely well and now other areas of the business would like to use it. For example, let's say I wanted to perform the exact same process audit
at a supplier, but I want a separate datasheet on my SharePoint page to separate in house audits from supplier audits. The form I created for in house audits took an extremely long time and has tons and tons of fields and tons and tons of rules.
Can I simply save the form to a new location, and somehow publish the form to a datasheet view so all fields from the form appear as columns and the form submits data to the new datasheet? If so, can somebody explain how? I would be eternally greatful!
    Mitch

Would this be an InfoPath form?
One option would be to extend your current form to have a 'Type' field that has 'Internal' and 'Supplier' as choices. You could then create views to show 'All', 'Supplier only' and 'Internal only' subsets of the data.
Alternatively you may be able to save the list as a template and then re-use it but I can't remember how well if at all that works.

  • How can set up tenant account on share point online 2013

    Hi All,
My Client has asked me to set-up a development and QA environment on SharePoint Online 2013. I have gone through the following link
    http://blogs.perficient.com/microsoft/2014/08/how-to-develop-and-deploy-for-sharepoint-online-office-365/
which explain the benefit of setting up of Development and QA environment. One of the things it highlights is
It helps to name tenants consistently. We usually use the convention:
    •https://<production tenant name>.sharepoint.com
    •https://<production tenant name>DEV.sharepoint.com
    •https://<production tenant name>QA.sharepoint.com
However when I create a subsite the url is very different from the above. The subsite has a url somehting like https://mydomain.sharepoint.com/sites/dev or  https://mydomain.sharepoint.com/sites/QA. I am not sure how can I do the naming in the manner specified
    in the article (i.e. https://<production tenant name>DEV.sharepoint.com)
    Thanks
    Krishna

    Hi krishnat,
Yes, you are correct, you will create 2 more tenants for DEV and QA as URL format you listed above.
For FQDN URLs below (tenant.sharepoint.com) are separate tenant domain URLs, e.g. <production tenant name>,<production tenant name>DEV and <production tenant name>QA, so per your referenced article, it will need
    to create other 2 tenants.
    •https://<production tenant name>.sharepoint.com
    •https://<production tenant name>DEV.sharepoint.com
    •https://<production tenant name>QA.sharepoint.com
Here is an post with more informaiton about SharePoint Online tenant, you can take a look.

  • SharePoint 2013 workflows for SPD - need a separate server to run workflow engine?

    Hi there,
I have a single machine dev installation of SharePoint 2013. How to have SP 2013 Workflows done in SharePoint Designer - so we can migrate them from one environment to the other without having to make manual changes again.
Does this need any special software installed? Can we install it on our APP server?
    Thanks.

    Hi Frob,
If you want to be able to move workflow manager to another environment, then you need to install the workflow manager in a separate server.
When you want to use the workflow manager in another environment, you need to leave the workflow manager from the existing farm.
And then join the workflow manager to the farm where you want to use the workflow manager and also re-register the workflow service.
Here is a similar issue for you to take a look:

  • Do we need separate Unattended service account for each SharePoint Server 2013 BI service applications?

SharePoint 2013 - I'm planning to use 'unattended service account' method of Secure Store Service - for Excel, Performance Point and Visio services. I'm about to create Active directory accounts for them.
Question: Do we need separate Active directory accounts for each service
    DomainName\ExcelUnattendedAccount
    DomainName\PPSUnattendedAccount
    DomainName\VisioUnattendedAccount
    (or)
Can I have just one Active Directory account DomainName\SharePointUnattendedAccount ?
Are there any drawbacks having a single account? Any best practice around this? For all the three services the data sources are going to be the same.
    Subash.S

Security is the only reason you would separate accounts (as these accounts must have access to the source data). There should be no other drawbacks.

  • SharePoint Designer - Splice repeating data into separate lists?

I'm a beginner with SharePoint Designer (for SP 2010), so please let me know if you need more info on the question below in order to determine the feasibility.
We have an InfoPath 2010 form that has a repeating section with several fields, one of which is an Approved/Not Approved radio button.  The form can be used to house a mix of approved and not approved entries.  The stakeholders would like to then
have that form populate two separate lists—one with the approved entries and one with the entries that were not approved.  Since this information repeats and is merged into one column/one cell on the original SharePoint library, I’m not having any
success splitting that data out so that Not Approved lines go to one library and Approved lines go to another.  I’ve been playing around with it but so far can only get an all or nothing entry to show up in one of the lists.
Is this possible with SharePoint designer to do this, or is it best to advise our stakeholders to change the form design to only accept one client per form?
    I appreciate any assistance!

    Hi Lennie,
You cannot do this with SharePoint Designer or directly with InfoPath form. You need to write code to submit data from repeating table to separate lists.  See this for reference:
    http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/matt/archive/2006/02/02/Add-SharePoint-List-Items-with-InfoPath.aspx
    http://www.bizsupportonline.net/infopath2007/how-to-submit-items-rows-repeating-table-infopath-sharepoint-list.htm
Or use 3rd party tools like Qrule from Qdabra. Hope it helps.

  • Setup Sharepoint 2013 Extranet as separate farm

    Hi All
We currently have a Sharepoint 2013 Intranet and would now like to setup a Sharepoint 2013 Extranet/Portal to allow external customers/clients a shared collaboration area to work with internal users.  The proposed site would be fairly basic and most
likely comprise of a site page per customer with a few libraries and maybe some form of announcements.  We don't envisage the demand being huge - maybe a few hundred users and 40/50 customer/client areas.
I just wanted to outline my plan / ideas in case I've missed any pitfalls or have missed anything obvious.
We plan to setup the extranet separately from our internal Sharepoint Intranet so the two sites will not need to communicate with each other and will be on two different domains.
The Extranet will be setup in our DMZ and be composed of 2 x SP Servers (App & Web);  2 x SQL;  2 x DC  (all on VMWare).  This follows the MS 'Back to Back' architecture but we do not plan to segment the DMZ area using routers.
We will also configure a one-way forest trust from the internal AD to the new external AD so that internal users can authenticate with their existing credentials.
The Topology diagram that I have seen states that you use a UAG between the DMZ and the Internet - is this necessary?
Any advice / guidance / tips appreciated
    Andy

Another issue to consider is that you will need to open ports in order for the SharePoint servers in the DMZ to resolve users via the People Picker. The ports are outlined here: http://blogs.technet.com/b/wbaer/archive/2009/01/21/people-picker-port-protocol-requirements.aspx
You can use an IPSec tunnel between SharePoint in the DMZ and the internal network to limit the number of ports you need to open.
Another thing to consider is that while 2012 R2 does have WAP included, it requires ADFS and does not work with SharePoint Apps as it doesn't support wildcard domains.

If you're using SharePoint 2013 April 2013 CU or higher, this is a known issue where the People data is missing in Edit view. There is a separate issue that is resolved in the September 2014 CU:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2995905
    Consider the following scenario:
You create a SharePoint 2013 list that contains a Person or Group (people picker) column.
You create or edit an item, and then you select a person whose name contains a comma in the Person or Group field.
In this scenario, the value of the Person or Group field is lost when you save the item.

  • Sharepoint Foundation 2013 User field issue

Guys, I have an issue with Sharepoint Foundation 2013 site that we have created some custom workflows for. We have a couple required fields that we type in a users name and it automatically pulls up a user based on Active directory. once we choose that name
and then save the form. the field immediately becomes blank when i open the workflow item back up. I'm kind of at a loss. I've already totally hosed the server once and was forced to restore.  This seams to have started when we installed share point server
patch KB2881077 but i cannot uninstall or roll back the patch as there is no option to.
    Thoughts?

  • Sharepoint Foundation - search working for some users (or computers), but not others

    Hi all,
We have doozy of a search problem with SharePoint Foundation 2010 that I'm hoping someone can help with.
We have an application that is listening on port 14197 and search is working just fine, but only for one or two users.
If I do a search while logged in using the account we set the application up with then the search works fine and it returns records as expected.
If I use a different account - one that has full control over the app, then the exact same search fails with the following message:
We did not find any results for 06BSL.
    Suggestions:
    Ensure words are spelled correctly.
Try using synonyms or related searches.
Try broadening your search by searching from a different site.
    Additional resources:
Get additional search tips by visiting Search Help
If you cannot find a page that you know exists, contact your administrator.
We've done everything we can think of, including several procedures to create new search accounts, replace databases, etc.
Nothing has helped and all of the info we can find online is in relation to getting search working when it doesn't work at all.  In our case it is working, but only for some users.  We thought it might have been a permissions issue, but not matter
what permissions we seem to give to test accounts they still don't work.  We've set up a test account, for example, that is a member of the 'application owners' group, but cannot produce any search results with it.
The SharePoint Foundation server is running on Windows 2008 Server Foundation, with a separate SBS 2003 DC.
    Any help most appreciated.

Hi Alex, thanks for your response and apologies about the late reply - didn't realise someone had responded until now!
Agreed that this looks like a permissions issue, but we're stumped as to what it could be.  The 'test' account displays this problem - if we try and search on 06BSL
we get no results, but it does appear that this account has full control over this document (see below).
Note that the 'Manage Permissions' page presents a comment 'This list item inherits permissions from its parent. (Customer QA & Product Management)' which is what we're
    expecting.
The indexing schedule is set to 5 minutes.
Appreciate your help with this, as we've spent a huge amount of time on this problem but don't seem to be any closer to a resolution.
    Cheers,
    Damian
Check permissions result (this result is the same for the list or for the document itself):
Permission levels given to test (DOMAIN\test)
    Full Control
Given through the "QA Application Owners" group.
    Design, Contribute, Read
Given through the "QA Application Members" group.
