SharePoint Online and Open XML

Hi,
Using OpenXml I can generate word documents in SharePoint Foundation Sandbox just fine. However uploading the solution to SharePoint Online does not seem to be possible as DocumentFormat.OpenXml.dll is not allowed (due to problems with remoting). So is it
possible to use openxml in sharepoint online or is there another way to generate word documents programmatically in sharepoint online? thanks.

According to this post: http://community.office365.com/en-us/f/154/p/15363/70842.aspx#70842
OpenXML is not available in SharePoint Online. So is it possible to programmatically create reports from a list (word etc.) in SharePoint online programmatically or is this atm impossible?

  • One Identity in SharePoint Online and SharEPoint on Azure

    Dear All,
I create the portal in SharePoint Online and I used local AD for identity.
But when I create the infopath form and workflow, I have used SharePoint on Azure.
    My question,
If user access through SharePoint Online portal, and I do hyperlink to form on sharepoint azure. Can we use the same identity?
For example, user A access portal via SharePoint Online, when he click the form. it's directly automatically to SharePoint on Azure. No login again.
    Thank you

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to open a form on SharePoint azure from SharePoint Online with the same identity.
For your issue, you need to consider these technologies:
    1)
    Shared Access Signature
    2)
    WIndows Azure Acess Control
You can have a look at the blog:

  • Clarification on SharePoint Online and SQL Server

I have several subsites on a SharePoint 2013 server that uses external content types and the Business Data Connectivity Service to access tables in a SQL Server database. I used the Sharepoint 2013 Designer to configure most of this, but at times, I also
used Visual Studio 2013. Everything works fine. It successfully uses a secure store Application ID to authenticate connections to a remote SQL Server (i.e. the SQL Server and SharePoint server are 2 completely different machines that are not even within the
same domain). The external lists on the SharePoint site are capable of reading data in the SQL tables, updating data, adding new data, and deleting old data. I have specified permissions to users/groups that help me control who can access the external lists
on the SharePoint sites. Everything has been working well for a while now.
But now I have to start thinking about using SharePoint Online, instead of an on-premises SharePoint server. And everything I am reading indicates that what I do above is not going to work with SharePoint Online. It sounds like I will have to either move
our database to a SQL Azure service, or if I want to continue using our existing SQL Server, then I am going to have to develop a WCF service that will allow SharePoint Online to communicate with our own SQL Server. Am I understanding this correctly? Or is
there a way to take what I did above and make it work with SharePoint Online?
    Thank you,
    Steven

    Hi,
We can use Hybrid Connections to connect SharePoint Online to an on-premises SQL Server.
Here is a blog from MSDN for your reference:
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/alimaz/archive/2014/07/31/connect-sharepoint-online-to-an-on-premises-sql-server-from-an-azure-provider-hosted-app-using-hybrid-connections.aspx
We can also customize a WCF service and publish it to public web site to achieve it.

  • SharePoint Online and POP email

I have a client who is interested in using SharePoint Online, but they are using pop email hosted by Rackspace. Can someone tell me if this will cause any issues with SharePoint, is there any limitation in SharePoint functionality when doing this? Would
email enable workflows still work with POP accounts.  Also are there any issues with SSO and Federation with AD using SharePoint Online?
    Thank you for the help.
Thanks in advance for your time. Steven

    Hi,
The email address for users when used in a workflow is the email address set in SharePoint Admins User Profiles in Office 365. The field is called Work Email. This is automatically populated with the primary SMTP address of the user and mail is sent to it
if licensed for Exchange Online. Depending on the workflow, you should be able to send mail to external users, because the workflow when triggered will fall dependant on the permission of the user initiating the workflow.
No, there are no real issues with SSO (ADFS 2) or DirSync and SP Online... Just be sure to be mindful of deleting and recreating users, or stopping and starting sync because you could run into permissions issues within Sharepoint Online due to user guid
    conflicts.

This is in SharePoint Online with Office 365.  How can I manage this?  I have tried connecting to SharePoint online via a data connection, but I get errors when it tries to make the data connection.

  • Is Office Home and Business 2013 fully compatible with Sharepoint Online (Office 365)?

My client recently upgraded 3 Windows 7 PCs (2-32 & 1-64-bit OS) from Office 2007 32-bit (which was actually working fine against Exchange/SharePoint Online) to Office Home and Business 2013 (32-bit)
Now, for all 3 PCs, while Office 2013 Word/Excel can open, check out/in, and save SharePoint Online files, there is ALWAYS a 2 minute delay in closing the file which is apparently waiting for the Local Security Authority call to return. This seems
to indicate an issue related to SharePoint security on the client side.
      Problem Event Name: AppHangXProcB1
      Application Name:
    WINWORD.EXE
      Application Version:
    15.0.4657.1000
      Waiting on Application Name:
    lsass.exe:lsasspirpc
This is the Local Security Authority Security Support Provider Interface Remote Procedure Call (LSA SSPI RPC)
My client has 66 licenses for SharePoint Online (Plan 2) and 73 Exchange Online (Plan 1) "stand alone" services. The same failure is happening on 3 Win 7 PCs. All of which I've carefully reviewed against the MS Office trouble shooting guides (start
    Windows OS w/out non-MS services, Word/Excel safe mode w/out add-ons, O365 readiness checks, Office repair, etc.). We have PCs running Win 7 (32 & 64-bit) w/Office 365 ProPlus & Office Professional Plus 2013 that work fine. it's JUST these 3 Win 7
PCs that were upgraded from Office 2007 to Office Home and Business 2013 that have the 2 min. SharePoint file close time.
Can you please confirm that Office Home and Business 2013 is compatible w/SharePoint Online
at least for Excel and Word?
The "slow close" problem can be demonstrated on multiple site collections/sub sites and w/Excel & Word docs in doc libs and lists
After many hours capturing information, following the MS Office trouble shooting guides, and repairing the Office install, I've had no luck in resolving this. While Word/Excel will eventually close SharePoint Online files after about
2 minutes, this is certainly unacceptable. Otherwise, locally stored files close normally and new files were created by the Office 2013 Excel/Word for this testing.
Any thoughts or guidance would be appreciated.

    Hi raygabe,
I couldn't find the document mentioned there is any compatibility between Office365 SharePoint online and Office Home and Business 2013 version, I would recommend that you check if the issue could be reproduced on other Win7 machines installed with Office
Home and Business 2013 installed directly instead of upgrading from Office2007, see if issue is related to Office application upgrade.
I also recommend that you post this issue on our dedicated Office365 SharePoint online forum and Office 2013 forum for a better assistance with more experts regarding this issue from the following links.

  • How to get Client ID and Client Secret for Office App for Word which accessing SharePoint Online

we currently implementing an Office App for MS Word which access SharePoint list and get data from lists. Our aim is any user can get this app from Office App store and enter their SharePoint URL and browse their own SharePoint lists and use those. When
I was checking mechanisms which you used to access SharePoint, in some of them have used ClientId and Client Secret to authenticate with SharePoint. I have following questions.
1.If I want to sell my app using Office app store where can I get those clientId and client secret which is used to  get the access tokens.
2.Is it possible to create SharePoint app and publish it to SharePoint app store and get clientId and client secret and use it when accessing through office. So users first download our SharePoint app install it to their SharePoint environment then get out
Office App from Office app store and add it to word. Will this work?

    Hi,
    >> We are planning to develop an Office app to access SharePoint Online and SharePoint on Premise from Microsoft word.
I’m not very familiar with SharePoint development, so please correct me if I have any misunderstandings about your requirement.
The basic components of an app for Office are an XML manifest file and the default webpage of your app (server side).
    >> If I'm publishing my Office App for Word in to the Microsoft office app store, how do I get the ClientId and ClientSecret which I need to pass to authenticate with SharePoint online?
As far as I know, when register your web app to SharePoint Online, you will get the ClientId and ClientSecret from the Azure Active Directory. And you need to store the Client ID and Client
Secret on the app server side.
For details, you could reference the article
Building an Office 365 ASP.NET MVC app.
    >> If ClientId and ClientSecret not providing when we publishing Word Office App to the app store how what the ways which we can use to authenticate with SharePoint using Word Office app?
You don’t need to provide the ClientId and ClientSecret when publishing your App to App Store. They are stored on your app server side.
By the way, if you have the question about how to access the SharePoint resource in a Web Application, I will suggest you posting the questions to
SharePoint Development Forum. For this forum, we mainly discuss the questions about using the Office JavaScript API to develop Apps for Office.

  • Migrating into a Hybrid SharePoint on premise and SharePoint Online

We currently have a SharePoint 2007 farm and are migrating to SharePoint 2013 on premise + SharePoint Online hybrid. FYI we are using AvePoint DocAve for this.
We are trying to get as much contents as possible into SharePoint Online and only keep the highly complex sites (eg, sites with complex workflows, custom web parts, full-trust infopath forms, email-enabled libraries) in SharePoint 2013 on-premise.
So the requirement is to 'split' a site collection in the source and move a portion of it to SharePoint Online, and the complex portion to SharePoint 2013 On-premise. For sizing guidance, the site collection I'm looking
at contains 400 subsites that is nested up to 4 levels deep.
Level 0 is the root site, Level 1 sites are the direct subsites of root site, Level 2 sites are direct subsites of Level 1 sites, and so on until Level 4 sites. We have conducted an analysis of these subsites individually and know whether they can go to
SPO or there are complexities that dictate they have to live in the On-premise world.
So question here is what is the best and recommended way to split this site collection and push as many sites as possible to SPO.

    Hi,
From your description, you would like to move subsites to another server and to be remained as subsites of original site, so that users will still have the same use experience as before. They will not feel the change for the migration. If
I misunderstood, please point it out.
Actually, site collection could not be splited to two locations. For your requirement, here is a workaround:
Move those sites to SPO as you expect.
Create a site collection on on-premise server in the place of Lv0.
Move the rest two site to step 2 site collection as two subsites.
Modify the navigation on both SPO and on-premise, make it appear to be as the old one. Create links to the sites on another server.

  • Developing SharePoint Apps to work on both OnPremise and SharePoint Online

I have a requirement of developing SharePoint app which should work on both SharePoint online and SharePoint on premise. Is there any restriction on apps which might only work on one particular environment and not working on other. If there are scenarios
which app can only work on particular environment what are the limitations and scenarios.

When using the SharePoint Remote API (CSOM/JSOM/REST) and wanting your apps to be usable across platforms you must make sure to reference the correct version of Microsoft.SharePoint.Client and be careful not to utilize features only available in O365.
There are two version of the CSOM 15 and 16. The 16 version comes with VSTO and has some methods only available on O365, for example Web.GetFolderByID method. If you reference the 16 version and use this method everything will compile but will fail the minute
you make the call to SharePoint on-prem. You should also avoid using the new REST batch capabilities which are only available in O365. There is virtually no documentation on the differences between the versioned API's.

  • Sharepoint Online Can not edit anything in Sharepoint designer as Site collection administrator

    Dear all,
I am using sharepoint online and sharepoint designer 2013. Things were working fine but one day it suddenly stopped working. I have assigned site collection administrator to several accounts and I tried on different computers. I can not edit anything in
sharepoint designer 2013. Can not edit workflows, can not edit lists. Everything seems to be bugging out. I have reinstalled sharepoint designer and tried on different computers, all of them behave the same. I checked on all accounts I assigned site collection
admin to, they all have full control over everything. I can edit lists on the sharepoint site with no problem. Anyone knows what's going on?
I also created another blank site, same thing happens.
    -Timothy

Are you able to edit site in IE?
    Try below:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/namkh/archive/2013/04/18/quot-the-web-site-has-been-configured-to-disallow-editing-with-sharepoint-designer-quot.aspx
One straight forward way of doing it is from the UI (Which did not work in my case though :(  )
      1.  Right-click the ONET.XML file ( at \Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates\<var><Service></var>\xml) for the site definition and open it with Notepad
If you see “DisableWebDesignFeatures=wdfopensite” section in the one.xml that means your site has been configured to disallow SharePoint designer.
You can remove this section from the file and should be able to access the site in designer now
    2.   If you are unable to get rid of “DisableWebDesignFeatures=wdfopensite” or find the correct onet.xml corresponding to your site definition, here is a simple script I put together to see if Designer is disabled on the site using the property
vti_disablewebdesignfeatures2 and update it as required.

  • Unable to Create Workflows with either SharePoint Designer 2010 or 2013 to our SharePoint Online Service

    Hey there
I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on our current issue using SharePoint Online (hope this question is in the correct place)
We are using SharePoint Online and I believe we are using the SharePoint Plan 1 for EDU - which I believe is the A2 Free plan.
I have being trying to get my head around the new changes (as we currently run a standalone 2010 deployment) and decided to see what workflow options I had.  I had read to use SharePoint Designer 2013 with the online service and after installation opened
the package, connected to the site and tried to create a simple email workflow.  I first saw a loading screen stating
"The list of workflow actions on the server references an assembly that does not exist. Some actions will not be available.  The assembly strong name is Microsoft.Activities, Version 1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=731bf3856ad364e35.
Contact your server administrator for more information."
after this it tried loading some metadata and then I saw:
Server-side activities have been updated. You need to restart SharePoint Designer to use the updated version of activities.
I close SPD down and rebooted and then same happened again and continues too.
After research I applied a hotfix that was known to resolve the issue, but it still remains.  I also tried running SPD in admin mode but the same still happens.
Lastly I tried selecting workflows 2010 from the drop down field when creating the workflow to see what happened.  I go the same.  I also keep getting the following as a pop from time to time.
The list of workflow actions on the server references an assembly that does not exist. Some actions will not be available.  The assembly strong name is Microsoft.Office.Workflow.Actions, Version=16.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c.
Contact your server administrator for more information.
I have also tried to do the same in SharePoint Designer 2010, but receive the same massages.
What should I be looking at or doing to help rectify this?

uninstalled Language Pack and it worked!
Uninstalling the Preview and installing SharePoint Designer 2013 resolved the error.

According to the link as linle provided, there are two deletions in local, please double check these two places:
1.Delete all folders in the following directory:
    C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SharePoint Designer\ProxyAssemblyCache\
2.Delete the files in all folders in this directory:
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WebsiteCache\  (don’t delete the folders, just delete the contents of the folders)
Then, try to create a new workflow in SharePoint Designer 2013 to see if it works.
You can first keep the list for the current status, and save it as a template which will be used to create another list.
1.Login and locate the associated list on your SharePoint Online.
2.Click List Settings under List tab, and click Save list as template.
3.Type a File name, Template name, select Include Content, and click OK. Click OK.
    4.Click Site Actions->More Options->List.
5.Locate and click the newly saved template, type a name, and click Create.
Then, create a workflow in your SharePoint Designer 2010 associated to the new list to see if it works.
Moreover, please check if there are any maintenances on your SharePoint Online which may cause the issue.
    1.Login to Office 365 Portal (https://portal.microsoftonline.com/).
2.Click Service Health in the left pane of Admin page.
3.Check the status of SharePoint Online

  • Display xls-files in browser (Sharepoint online 2013)

I've seen this question answered with "xls is not supported" several times, but according to
this page viewing should now be supported:
Excel 97- Excel 2003 Workbook (.xls) or Excel 97- Excel 2003 Template (.xlt)
If a workbook is in .xls or .xlt format, you can typically view but not edit a workbook in a browser window. When the file is edited, it is saved in .xlsx or .xltx format.
I can't get it to work though, has anyone of you been able to open a xls-file in the Excel web app?

    Hi  ,
According to your description, I  tested in my SharePoint Online and get the same result.
If you hover over drop down, if you don't see view in browser then the file can't be opened in browser. So .xls file doesn't seem to be supported.
I recommend that you open the file in Excel 2010 or Microsoft Excel 2013, and then save the file as one of the supported formats. The following table shows the recommended file formats for the Excel 2013
    Web App.
